Art Rant - Tumblr Posts
Ayo, if any of you are on Twitter and follow a bunch of dreamsmp/mcyt artists or are following Butch Hartman on tik tok, you may know that he has been doing some Dream smp “fanart”. So far (at the time of posting) he has drawn Dream, Technoblade, Wilbur Soot, Tommyinnt, and Quackity. All of which are in his typical art style, which is fine i guess. I cannot say that I like the depictions of there characters in that art style, although for an artist’s view point I can say that the line art is decent. Other than that, it looks like horse shit.
To be completely honest with you all, I personally do not like Butch for what he has done in the past and comments he has made about trans people as well as anyone with any type of illness, be it mental or physical. I’m trying not to let my personally distaste of him get in the way of looking at his work, let that be know. I am only talking about his Dream smp work, not his other pieces of work from anime or other forms of media.
I’d like to break down each drawing as simply as I can on what I do not like about it, this isn’t meant in a harmful way. I would just like to say my piece
First off: Dream
While I can say that the design and execution was good, the most that I can say of what I don’t like if just the style it’self. At least in comparison to the character/cc. It’s kinda hard to fuck up a fanart of dream, given that his character has a simplistic design. (Not that is a bad thing) but to be frank, the style doesn’t really work. But overall not the worst, 6/10
Next up: Wilbur Soot
This one kinda hurts. Again, line art and execution is decent. However, how in the heck does that look like Wilbur! The design is what I have the most of a problem with in the drawing. It doesn’t even look like him! Wilbur is one of my favorite characters in the smp and this just hurts to look at! Where is the iconic beanie, the short curly hair?! 0/10
Next up: Technoblade (never dies)
While accurate to cc!techno’s Minecraft skin, it is not a good design. I have seen much better depictions of a Technoblade whose design is closer to the og skin rather than some pretty anime boy. Although both types of fanart are amazing, not picking sides on techno’s design here! My main gripe is the weapons, I get the sword, but a dagger connected to it. I’m sure we’ve all seen some artistic liberties taken with some of the smp characters design, but they work well! They make sense to the characters! This doesn’t! 0/10
Next up, the most ‘well known’ (?): Tommyinnt
Holy shit. I do not like this at all. He’s ripped the design from someone else’s work, what more is there to say! I have a similar problem with the one he did of Wilbur. It doesn’t look like Tommy! The most that could give you the impression of it being tommy would be the compass and his clothes. Other than that, definitely not. The first time I saw this I didn’t even realize it was him till I looked at the tags, same with Wilbur. -10/10
And finally, the king of cards: Quackity
This ones much newer. While yes this does look like pre-election quackity, a few bits of the design say other wise. A. The scar, which he got after the butcher army (to hunt and execute Technoblade) which was post-election and post-November 16th, as well as the scar being drawn in the wrong direction. And B. The cards, which would be around present time Las Nevadas. To be honest I was hoping for a Las Nevadas!Quackity but I guess not. 2/10 (not bad, but not good enough)
Anyways, if you’ve read all the way through, thanks! It means a lot. Overall I do not like how Butch has drawn these characters, most of which are my favorites (which adds an extra sting to the already painful wound). That being said, thank you for reading. Please comment your thoughts, I would love to read them!
I will no longer be doing challenges and much less participating in art fights no matter how much I want to. These things are just not fun for me... T^T
ꗃ logging on... loading..... ❀ oak is online !! ❀ ╰┈➤ PLEASE PLEEEASE REBLOG MORE OF THIS POOKIE'S ART!! seriously, speaking about this rant, i understand this completely what you mean. people constantly think that we're "guilting them" into reblogging shit, when no! we just want a piece of the "popular artist" cake, and just want to experience having more than one note when we wake up in the morning. i think that tumblr people as a whole should give smaller artists much more attention, who spend just as much (if not MORE) time and effort on their art than the "popular artists" do. and some people say "it's good not to focus on the numbers" BUT THE PEOPLE WHO ARE SAYING THAT ARE USUALLY *VERY* POPULAR THEMSELVES SO??? it's sad that i have to spam reblog my own content, just to get some sort of reaction, so i completely understand where you're coming from. your art is beautiful. /srs /pos

it’s kind of incredible how much pixar has backpedaled over the last couple of years, from the standpoint of character design
these were the kind of characters designs they had when they did their first movie with humans as their main cast
despite being cg all of the characters are visually distinct from each other and they look like 2d figures translated into a 3d environment
now it’s just???
all their human characters kind of lack that visual distinction and they’re all just? cute?
DAE struggle to draw reference art if there is no context?
ok ok bear with me in reference art, you need to make a fairly neutral expression and body position so you can easily see a characters proportions But????? whenever I draw a character just standing there existing for no reason i STRUGGLE to make any pose they are in look natural its the art equivalent to "quick act natural!"
God I hate doing lineart like why can't my sketch just poof into a color-in-the-lines picture

I don't get how people are able to post their art when it's objectively Not Good
Like, when the artist is definitely just starting out and needs to learn the basics of art and you can't give them any constructive criticism without sounding like an assbag or being too general or saying basically "git gud"
Oh and let me be clear, I'm not shitting on these folks. I WISH I was that confident when I was at that skill level. I am jealous/proud of these people
If I wasn't chained to the No One Look At Me Or I'll Kill Myself mindset, I'd probably have improved my art a lot more, learned to take criticism, interacted with more artists, and gained a platform or been on my way to one much quicker
This is just something I can't do I guess
I have tons of art that is passable but because it's not super-extra-excellent I don't want to post it and a lot more art that I stopped 3/4ths of the way through because I'm scared the finished product won't be perfect
I even got into a hellishly frustrating artblock this past month because I looked at the amazing work of some artists (that I love so much) who are not only younger and better at art than me, but can draw a wider array of subjects and can actually dedicate themselves to art for more than a few days at a time
Seeing these artists' work shattered my confidence and made me throw out every sketch before it was even half-done because it wasn't "perfect"
It's something I'm working on though

Can we PLEASE normalize non-sexual nudity in art, I'm aroace, but I find the human body so fascinating and beautiful, and like seeing how different people represent it
but whenever I see nude artwork there's always some rat in the comments saying "sus" or criticizing the artist for daring to draw someone with no clothes on, in a non suggestive manner, it's a shame so many people only see it as an object of attraction, please make more cool art

I am exceedingly tired of worrying about how I am perceived, I just want to unapologetically create, without worrying about whether or not what I'm doing will bring me some kind of monetary compensation in the future
I am going to suck, and I am going to suck a lot before I get anywhere good. I just want to make stuff the same way little me did when I was 8 with crayons and colored pencils: completely unbothered.
