Fanon goes with both! I read about Showing-off!Derek like I read about Afraid-by-stair!Derek. And both are particularly good.
My favorite is when Stiles say to Derek take stairs like normal people, please, he knows how Derek is hot, sexy, and badass, "please, take stair like normal person, Sourwolf!" And Derek smirking at him and jumps a double somersault or something like that to impress him the next time.
But stories with child Derek to afraid about stair like a toddler and all strategies he found to avoid them, that's hilarious. I remember once it's because Laura afraid him when he was little. And Talia got crazy because Derek didn't forget his fear, just found new tactics to avoid stairs, again and again.

I prefer when Derek is just a show-off, to impress or afraid somebody. But Peter is a show-off too, and he raised up Derek too, so...
