every time someone does “valyrian culture was more egalitarian than andal culture” discourse i point to the fact that jaehaerys invented the doctrine of exceptionalism and was an evil misogynistic menace to every woman he knew, how visenya was not the ruler of their house despite being older, and how the vale which is STEEPED in andal culture & chivalry & the seven regularly has their houses ruled by women in a way that almost no other region outside of dorne has ntm having the ONLY ruling lady of a paramount house INCLUDING VALYRIAN AND FIRST MEN HOUSES and also i start shrieking

this episode, despite not having the laughable plot points from 2x03, has run into some irreconcilable issues with the source material, but not in the typical "this event didn't happen in the text" way, but in the "these themes are in direct conflict with everything asoiaf stands for" way.

asoiaf sets itself apart from most fantasy because, in a genre chalk full of stories with divine, predetermined heroes destined to save the world, kings-to-be whose causes were always righteous and whose wars were always glorious, decided to flip the script. grrm wanted a story where no one's actions could be excused by vague notions of serving the "greater good", where divine purpose and prophecy held little weight compared to the very real damage done to actual people, because at the end of the day, nothing can justify the violence inflicted onto innocents in these endless quests for power.

the dance of dragons is a very easy story to comprehend when the rose-tinted glasses this fandom insists on seeing the Targaryens through are removed. it's about two siblings growing up in a time of peace and prosperity, going to war over daddy's throne, and everyone either dying or becoming a hollow husk of who they used to be. thats it. thats what war does. it kills you, or strips your humanity away bit by bit till you're hardly recognizable as a human and might as well be dead anyways. if there is one theme grrm wants readers to walk away with, it is that the price of war is NEVER one worth paying. I'm sure Rhaenyra thought that, sitting on the throne, haunted by the ghosts of her dead sons, and I'm sure Aegon II thought that, to broken to even climb the stairs of the IT, wishing only for his brothers, and sister, and children back.

while having Rhaenyra only willing to go to war over something "more than a crown" certainly paints her in a noble light, introducing a catch all justification for anything she does going forward to place herself on the IT is ridiculous. hotd essentially saying Rhaenyra actually HAD to go to war to save the realm from certain destruction years down the line because she was gifted special knowledge of her ancestor Aegon the Conqueror's prophecy (the Song of Ice and Fire *eye roll*) is a level of propaganda the "biased maesters" of f&b could only dream of.

also Aegon the Conqueror chose House Hightower for his son Maegor when they could have chosen any other from whole Westeros because he understood the power of house Hightower.

And the fact that oldtown was conquered separately after getting Reach. Also Hightowers are ruling Westeros since dawn age when Valyria did not even existed. Hightowers are ruling without fire and blood and people still fear and respect Oldtown.

I have never understood why people (tb )call Aegon "Aegon Hightower" and act like it's some great gotcha moment. All they're saying is

a) he wasn't born of incest and

b) he's from one of the most powerful families in the country, who

c) hold an ancestral seat located in the oldest city in the country,

d) control trade due to their location beside the sea,

e) have the Starry Sept which is where the High Septon lives as well as

f) the Citadel, which is the foremost center of learning in Westeros.

In summary, I don't get why him being a Hightower is a bad thing. And in any case, he does still have Sunfyre (my beloved dragon) and they have the best dragon-rider bond ever seen. This has been a huge rant, thanks for reading!

I am so afraid because what if they turn it in rhaelya love show or Aerys actually not bad kind or Rhaella and Elia supporting Rhaegar in his foolishness. Seriously I don't trust people who make these because of the vast majority of Stark and Targaryen fans.

I want to see Robert Baratheon's rebellion. I want a show that's unbiased and actually showcases the horrors of the Targaryen family. I want to see an entire kingdom realizing they are completely alone because the monarchs have never done anything for the good of the people. I want to see a young Jaime Lannister struggling to decide what to do. I want to see a young Ned Stark fighting for what he believes in. I want a show where the people are afraid — because who wouldn't be?

Instead, we got a pure blood supremacy, medieval neonazi, divine right dream show ... thanks, I guess?

i saw a gifset of every Targaryen princess. Like from Fiery Rhaena to Daenerys. They even had Helaena and Jaehaera (rare I know). Also without mentioning Shiera Seastar even though she wasn't a princess but—

and it did not had Rhaenys.

You know Little Rhaenys of Three who had Balerion? The Only Targaryen Princess with no valyrian features? Yes it did not had her even though she was a princess from both her mother and father's side. The Princess who was brutally murdered for her father and grandfather's crime.

I saw it well back in 2021 I suppose and I didn't know how to comment there or if it would be alright to point it out because if the OP remembered Aelora, Daenora, Rhae, Daella....

I think maybe for them they weren't valyrian/white enough. (It had Dany x Jon though...). Or maybe they missed them. Or not.

but it isn't surprising a bit, because it always has to be a white couple with God complex as something main or centre in a story. Greens aren't even considered as Targs —despite everyone of them being dragonriders— by many Targ stans which is infuriating. Elia and her children too as they stand between rhaelya. 🤷

Targ stans are the biggest hypocrites attacking jaehaera stans, calling her useless and a buss driver and getting mad at people creating aus and headcanons for her but then turn around and ship alaric and alysanne. book purist until its for there headcanons. stop policing people that are having fun
