more oc scribbles but they're also very scribbly actually
explanations + bonus doodle under the cut! :)
a manato outfit concept, along with some small crowd practice! i'm thinking of giving side characters / unimportant characters in crowds just faceless mannequin-esque designs, as i did here, for future reference. :3 i love drawing big, extremely exaggerated puffy sleeves so much!! definitely going to give all of manato's other outfits some sort of motif to that...
more manato!! wahoo!! this one is just random, honestly. a little scribble. a tiny thing. i don't draw proper character designs from the back, so i just wanted to make something a bit different. maybe i'll digitalize this and make it into a proper painting someday!
YEAAAAAH AKIHIRO!!!!! YEEAAAAH !!! i love him so much but i actually detest him but hes so silly abdhfsjska. this was sort of inspired by a screencap from "butcher vanity". as in the song š but i just wanted to make him look bored and annoyed instead. not for any particular reason; i just typically resort to giving my characters' faces annoyed / bored as a default. i really want to digitalize this, too! :P but definitely not right now, lmao.
more annoyed akihiro!! i've been thinking of drawing eyes a bit differently lately, as shown here. he's very judgy in this shot, haha! idk of what, though... š¤ once again, i just like making my characters pissed off. this one sort of gave me the vibes of old photos where they never smile. and in movies, all of the ancestors' portraits always look stern and annoyed... honestly, i'd be rather angry too if i had to sit still for multiple hours just to have my face painted too, so i can't really blame those guys š

this one was Just Plain Silly. also expression practice!! i liked how this one turned out,,, i had no idea how to make the eyes so i just resorted to anime, lmao. you know how some angry faces in unserious scenes in anime just have the character go like į(ą² ēą² į)? just big white eyes, and a massive square (typically sharp-toothed) mouth? to express Pure Unbridled Fury? like that. :)
this specific one was just literally based on something that happened a few minutes ago, lmao. just scrolling on tumblr and boom. netflixvania. get out!!!! >:(
also, a similar experience happened yesterday... i remember when i went to hot topic in the mall, as SOON as i turned to leave after i Purchased My Wares, you know how hot topic has all of their t-shirt graphics put into square frames, all over the wall?
yeah as soon as i went to Leave, and (poorly) chose to check out the graphics for a second, you want to know the FIRST god-damned thing i saw? A NETFLIXVANIA GRAPHIC. NO JOKE. now THAT was seriously the straw that broke the camel's back -- I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW HOT TOPIC HAD NETFLIXVANIA MERCH!!! .·°Õ(ā§ā”ā¦)Õ°·.
BUT I CHECKED THEIR WEBSITE. AND THEY DO. 3 pages worth of merchandise, and IT'S ALL FOR THE SHOW!! i died on the spot. anyway that's all i have to type right now but yeah it Sucked.

I hope to God the 28% are all minors
what the fuck. maria is 17. SEVENTEEN YEARS OLD. SHE IS A CHILD. A MINOR. 12 in rondo, 17 in SOTN. also tbh both of them are ugly, the art style did them horrendously

a bit of a rant under the cut because i JUST noticed this parallel and i feel. Not very good.
Ohhhhh. My God.
I just noticed this fucking parallel in music class last week and now I'm rocking back and forth, mentally breaking apart like that one stupid Stewie Griffin GIF. This one just confuses me as a whole.
Honestly, I've felt this way for a while, but I feel as if the team behind NFCV really wanted to adapt literally any other Castlevania game besides the one they were specifically supposed to adapt. I know that probably sounds really obvious, but at the same time, isn't that just proving my point?
The people behind NFCV clearly didn't care about Dracula's Curse. Alucard's outfit is from SOTN, Trevor's design as a whole is easily comparable to Judgement, and hell, they even used fucking Bloody Tears as one of the songs to put in this show! Bloody Tears, a song from Castlevania 2, in an adapation about Castlevania 3!
And now, this. A direct parallel to the cover of Castlevania 1. Well, this is obviously intentional, because how in the Allfather could this be a coincidence?
I could say that the showrunners were experiencing some nostalgia high or some shit and just decided to make everything in their adaptation about CV3 resemble CV1, but I know too damn well that the showrunners couldn't give a single crumb of wall meat about the game series they were adapting. Hell, Bloody Tears? In a CV3 adaptation? When CV3 has gems like Aquarius and Mad Forest? 'Tis beginning to feel less like they care about Castlevania so much, to the point that they'd dogpile any reference to the other games they can whilst still adapting the game they should have been adapting... and more like they just didn't bother to check which songs and references were from what games.
I mean, i'm not necessarily complaining. It's nice that they referenced a Castlevania game here, but all the while, couldn't they just... I don't know, maybe reference the one they were adapting? I guess it could be because CV1 is easily one of the most recognizable Classicvanias (I mean, it IS the game that started it all...), but couldn't they redraw the CV3 box art instead?

I mean, come ON! Look at this damn thing! It's awesome! All the characters get their seperate spotlights, the poses have diversity, and it just looks fucking cool.
Considering how well-known Trevor, Sypha, and Alucard are in NFCV as being the "main trio" or whatever, and considering how much pride the show takes in their rather poor attempt at the 'teamwork makes the dream work' genre, and just taking in the fact that Dracula's Curse is literally the epitome of Friendship Is Magic-ness, it would have been so much better to have a cover for Season 1 starring all the damned characters in it, besides Trevor and Dracula. Just, if your show is meant to have multiple protagonists, why not show it in a much more dynamic and effective way, that actually puts the game you're making a show out of into the spotlight?
also just never do my main man simon like that again okay? okay thank you
there is No way that posts about the ugliest people in fiction who have flat personalities and too many muscles are getting thousands of notes while the silliest bishounens with the best haircuts are getting neglected
It also to me just feels wrong when I see people claiming Annette wasnāt āimportantā before this. That she was a ānothing burgerā character. Like as if anyone who isnāt a fighter, hunter, or a literal villain isnāt worth as much as any other character, inherently lesser than everyone else. Especially since sheās Richterās girlfriend, like isnāt family and the common people who theyāre fighting to protect in the first place??? And yeah sure she didnāt have many cutscenes as other characters in the games sheās in, but in a linear platformer game context it wouldāve been jarring to have lots of cutscenes showing her perspective if not executed correctly, and Rondo was already unique for the series by having animated cutscenes like that at all (I am aware that technically CV3 had the ātake him with youā cutscenes and Belmontās Revenge had the āyou cannot stop me fatherā cutscene before this, but these were gameplay sprite based and not separate animations). I feel like it wouldāve been a ton more source respectful and interesting if we wouldāve gotten to see her interacting with the vampires and the other captives in the show, heck we couldāve gotten a plot around her trying to escape with the other Rondo girls since she does resist Dracula in game. Scenes of her and Richter during the beginning town fire and how they got separated in the chaos. Flashbacks to wholesome relationship moments between the two that characterize both of them and add more urgency to the already high stakes of her kidnapping.
Huh, itās almost like taking concepts from the source material and elaborating on them for a different media is what an adaptation is supposed to do.
I have to say this as a feminist woman who is also an author after seeing how Netflix intends to reinvent Annette (from Castlevania) as another strong female character....
The person in distress (damsel or otherwise) will always have a place in fiction because it is ok to be a victim. Seeing yourself in someone isn't just your skin colour, your pronouns or what is below your belt. It is what you have experienced. People who have experienced being in danger, needing saving or being at someone's mercy in which someone saved them need a character they can connect with just as as we need characters who can inspire us to do the saving. The victim character reminds us that there is no shame in being a victim and that is not your fault you experienced something bad. And if you are in that situation in the here and now, don't let your shame and fear hold you back from asking for help.
This is why I for one thing Annette should not have been changed. Plus, she could still have been fleshed out as being more than a love interest. She wouldn't be a femme fatale, but maybe be a good communicator, be resourceful, be brave despite being captured and have empathy even for those on the dark side kind of like how Princess Peach is not just Mario's love interest who needs saving all the time.
And for once, this goes far beyond just the race swapping. The Annette is not Annette. Her backstory is wrong, her personality is wrong and her profession is wrong. This is a new character entirely and they should have treated her like a new character with dignity not force her into being Annette'.
THIS is the real Annette.

And she deserves to be showcased as the real her just as much as any other character who is iconic to their series and you could fleshed her out to be more than just a victim as she was because real life victims are more than their trauma.
Please, let's respect characters and let us teach girls that it's ok to have experienced danger. You are not at fault. You did not fail yourself. You are not weak. You were unlucky. It's ok to be scared. It's ok to still be scared. It's ok to seek support. It's ok to admit you were attacked.
If we don't teach girls this, we are actually setting them up for danger because should they be victims, they will be more ashamed than ever to come forward and bring their assailants to justice.

Every day I remember that one of the animators got hired for making a Simon animation and I live in fear that Netflix could ever think about touching him at all. Like Iām already losing Richter and Maria, I canāt handle them taking anyone else. Like in a stupid way I guess Iām a little glad Nocturne is mixing Bloodlines and Rondo all stupid because at least that means theyāre not gonna touch John Morris or Eric, Iām still so upset about Elizabeth Bartley and Drolta thoā¦
sam deats being a shanoa fan is the scariest thing in the world to me. do NOT give her a netflix series i will rip out your entrails
the changes towards juste belmont that iām most angry about:
-his fashion is shit ugly
-his house is shit ugly
youāre going to adapt the most fashionable belmont and the belmont most inclined towards interior design AND MAKE HIM UGLY AND TASTELESS???? i can forgive turning him into a nihilistic edgy grandpa, but taking away the traits that made him fun and memorable? thatās a sin i cannot forgive
also yāall took away the belmont that the gayest subtext ever and killed his boyfriend. yeesh.
Maybe this is just me being autistic or something, but I do not understand how movie/TV adaptations of games are so hard to make. The original media is right there??? Just use it as a basis for your script?????? Add and subtract where necessary for the medium while still keeping it the same story at heart????????? āBut itād be boring if it was a whole tv showā ok then why is it not boring as a game???????????? Why do people replay games then???????????????????? I donāt get it.
"kill yourself" is basic. "i hope your favorite video game series gets turned into a serviceable to bad netflix adaptation that gets super popular and everyone thinks its better than the games" is real. its haunting. its happened to me and countless others
I keep seeing posts with people talking super positively about the Belmonts and whatever and getting excited to rant about character designs and stories and Simon in particular, but then I scroll down and see the tags and am reminded against my will that Nocturne exists and thatās what theyāre talking about.
I would absolutely love it if I could look up one of the only things making life bearable rn without seeing either a constant stream of content about a show that makes me deeply uncomfortable or āactually your favorite character is boring as hell and does not work at all in anything and has no effect on the story at large and also doesnāt matter and sucks and he doesnāt do anything remarkable or have enough abilities to warrant any attention and literally you can skip those games tbh they donāt have a story anyway play this fan game that changes all of the dialogue instead because he is so lame and has no personality or plot significance whatsoever he could spontaneously not exist and nothing would really change even that show you donāt like that doesnāt really adapt anything from the games and changes everything about every character they decide to write about couldnāt make him interesting he is that much of a nothing nobody character because he has no modern triple A game level cutscenes he is basically whip man Mario he go kill Dracula so boring thatās itā
I bet none of these people could name a game theyāve played that wasnāt somehow inspired by the Castlevania series. And yeah itās not nearly as popular now as it once was, but holy shit itād be easier to list off games that WERENāT directly or indirectly inspired by these games. Especially indie games. You would not believe how many times Iāve played a game, heard some chord progressions, and immediately been reminded of Castlevania. Shovel Knight is practically a love letter to a lot of older platformers, but the Castlevania influence bleeds from this game; they even made Specter Knightās boss battle very obviously based on Death!
And Metroid came out first, but without Simonās Quest we wouldnāt have the Metroidvania genre as we know it. Heck, we wouldnāt have a lot of genres. Soulsborne style is heavily inspired by that game down to the map progression and atmosphere, just in a 3D format. Iāve run into multiple people who call Simonās Quest both a proto-soulsborne and proto-metroidvania as well as a precursor to the modern psychological and survival horror genres. Hell it was one of the first series to put multiple endings into a platforming game, that was usually reserved for text based or RPGs. And thatās only the second game in the whole series!
Hell, Iād even say that for years before the Netflix series came out the series was considered on the same level as other classic, respected franchises. Iād see entries from it in lists of like āgames you should play before you dieā alongside Legend of Zelda and Halo or something. All those early 2000s gamer collages with logos from famous series would have Castlevania in it somewhere. If anything Iāve seen LESS people talking about the game since the show has been out unless itās to dog on it for the reason of āteehee I have a popular āunpopularā opinion and will make some people mad and most people agree with meā
Man, I donāt know, itās just infuriating and sad. :(
i already know most nfcv fans dont respect the games but i feel like ive been punched in the gut

You know that joke about how the voltron reboot feels like it was written by people who hate giant robots? Netflixvania feels like it was written by people who hate any monsters that arenāt vampires. And also shonen. It feels like the writers wanted to do the vampire chronicles instead or something.
Shdksskksk I only have second hand knowledge of the trainwreck that was voltron but man
And yea! The vampire favoritism is huge, considering how we're supposed to feel pity for them despite their atrocities w no redeeming qualities. They dont write them as nuanced monsters with some trying to coexist despite their nature, they're basically amoral fanged elves who are mistreated by those simple minded hunters :( (ignore the atrocities they commited on screen 5 minutes ago). And with this ask i do realize they placed other game's bosses to the sideline. My memories of the show are blurry but i don't remember any non vampires being part of Dracula's generals or having mayor roles (aside from uhh, Legion and Abel?)
And this truly shines in the way both Alucard and Death (and the belmonts) were rewritten, the former went from a tortured soul who sealed himself to stop his cursed blood, to someone who considers vampires his kin and defend them from the belmontd in the face of their implied child murders; and the latter who went from a spawn of Chaos with the purpose to serve the Dark Lord into an special soul sucking vampire who speaks like a league of legends player
It just feels like it tries to tell a gritty grimdark story, which doesnt works with castlevania ( cv is a silly monster smasher! And with optimistic tones! It's part of its charm),and it doesn't works on it's own ( the writing doesnt has the maturity and it doesnt takes itself seriously, not with the gratuitous vulgarity and oversimplification of nuanced subjects). And its pretty sad bc a shonen esque tone would suit Richter n Maria's story so well (the RoB cutscenes my fellas!)
Like i said tho, my memories of the show are a bit diffuse ( thank the gods) so i apologies if i have gotten things wrong and such
honestly it's just a shame i am positive a good chunk of netflix fans might actually really like the games. whose spreading rumours that theres "no story no characterization" it's right there. like admittedly sometimes you do gotta dig into it to really find the meat but it's definitely like right there
Alright Iāve thought about, Iām gonna actually start posting some of my criticisms of Netflixvania starting with the first season. I actually have a notepad document on my computer somewhere thatās just various rants about it that Iām gonna take from lol
Rant under a cut cause itās long, spoilers, and also cause uh tldr I do not like the show š
Ok letās start from the beginning of the show, episode one.
The first episode isnāt terrible, itās a bit rocky, some red flags here and there for what was to come, but thatās kinda expected of animations like this. It usually takes them a couple episodes to pick up and grow into their own, so I was skeptical, but not gonna knock it entirely when I first saw it.
My biggest criticism of this episode was the complete missed opportunity to introduce certain characters from this section of the seriesās story. Imagine if they had shown Isaac and Hector in the background of the castle or something at this point for foreshadowing later, as they wouldāve already been studying under Dracula at that time. Imagine if that old woman Lisa helped ended up being one of Lyudmilās family members, cementing them as friends of her for later. Alas, Netflix just decided not to use most of the already written backstories for most characters. But eh, thatās getting into nitpick territory.
And then the second episode happens⦠I honestly genuinely hate the concept of the Speakers and itās because they completely replace a much more interesting (especially for the tone and themes they were going for) group for Sypha to be a part of: The Church. In the game, Sypha is a witch, something thatās currently not very good to be at this time, however the church employs a bunch of male wizard soldiers. This is already a perfect opportunity set up and ready to go for them to make their points of the church being hypocritical, add some intense dramatic irony with maybe the audience getting to know Sypha is a witch before anyone else does and seeing her interact with a bunch of people who would have her dead if they knew, and create a super conflicted situation where these church soldiers all die during their encounter with the cyclops, but yet they scrapped it for uh random group of magic users that kinda exist entirely for a plot that didnāt need a new device to work. And Sypha just being all hood down and no hiding just takes away something interesting about her character, making her kinda bland in the process. Like itās one thing to have the Girlā¢ļø who owns the braincell trope and another to have a character with some actual immediate conflicts. They totally couldāve played up the āoh no if Trevor knew would he kill meā dynamic, especially with witches being commonly lumped in with āmonstersā in a lot of other media and Trevor being ya know a monster hunter. And already just from this one design choice she completely loses her symbolic putting the hood down scene for much later in the story to show that she actually trusts people and feels safe enough to not need to hide anymore because sheās got people on her side now.
Also the lack of Grant is just a crime in itself. Grant couldāve worked perfectly as like the everyman of the group. Hell, with his background of being a former noble turned thief presumably after hard times to straight up losing his entire hometown to flames and leading a revolution about it, Grant literally has like almost every common not magical vampire hunter person experience. He couldāve given the group any of those perspectives and been told the perspectives of the vampire hunting life he hasnāt had, ya know? And heād help differentiate the personalities and humors of the group in general. I literally canāt think of a negative to having Grant in the group.
So we were robbed of character development for Sypha and the existence of Grant, whatās nextā
The Bishop character is someone that couldāve been interesting if he was written with any kind of nuance, but instead heās extremely on the nose and blatantly laughably evil. Otherwise this guy is pretty forgettable besides how lame it was that they used Blue Fangs to kill him instead of ya know an actually recognizable enemy. Like the Blue Fangs design wouldnāt be bad if it was in literally anything else, but compared to the designs of most Castlevania monsters itās just really lame. Iādāve even accepted a Warg or something, idk. Personally I think having Death walk in taking the form of Zead and going through that speech while eventually turning into the skeleton form we know him as woulda gone hard but for some reason Death isnāt a thing until seasons later which sucks.
I also absolutely hate Alucard and the Cyclops being in the catacombs! Hate it! The Cyclops kinda had like a courtyard area for it and made sense being there since it was standing guard on the way to the castle. Literally what it is even doing in the catacombs ššš. Standing guard for⦠eepy Alucard? Why??? And the whole sleeping soldier thing or whatever they called him is just so obviously an excuse to have him appear faster and make it seem like it tied into the plot. Alucard absolutely should not have been introduced to the main group this early on because again that robs him of a bunch of opportunities for background and character development. He got maybe the one oh no dad donāt commit mass death thatās bad scene and nothing else when they had plenty of time to show him initially following his fathers orders and eventually growing to stand against him. And again??? Missed opportunity for anything radio drama related??? Like if thereās any opportunity to get any of that story more known itās in an animation? And besides, itās less work to just use whatever materials and supplemental materials already existed for the game!
Draculaās Curse and CoD have:
Two games
Two manuals
Three manga (TokyoPop and Preorder)
A couple game guides
Flashback sequences in a radio drama
Flashback sequences in SotN AKA: the game everyone knows
A ton of references in later games cause IGA is a big Draculaās Curse fanboy
Pachinkos
That is plenty of material to make an animation based on, especially because most games donāt get half of that, especially not NES games. They were literally handed like the NES game to adapt lottery and decided not to scratch like half the ticket ššš.
Alucard also being able to levitate kinda negates a lot of things. Like what the hell is the point of having a bat/mist form and a double jump then? If he can just be flying vampire Jesus immediately or whatever people call him idk. And you canāt tell me Alucard wouldnāt be painfully embarrassed if someone ever saw him shirtless come on this is the guy that wears like 5 layers of clothing in every game heās in to the point that even in the modern era heās choosing a suit over casual clothes. Every action he makes in this introduction to him is obviously fanservice for the sake of fanservice with very little thought behind it, except Iām not feeling very served right now. And having Trevor kinda lose that fight is a reoccurring problem this show ends up having: putting down other characters just to make certain ones get the cool fanservice moment. Contrary to what the writers of this show may believe, it actually doesnāt make me go āoh wow, Alucard is so cool and much badasā, it just feels weird and uncomfortable that Trevor is getting cheated out of one of his canon achievements because the writers preferred one characterās tits more than him.
So, basically, the show starts out with missed opportunities, concepts and characters getting cut out, watered down versions of characters that did make it in, cheap fanservice, poor explanations for things, etc etc. this all culminates into a resounding m e h + dread for later seasons being worse (boy was I correct on that fear lol).
Hereās some other things for the first season I didnāt know where else to fit:
None of the humor hit for me at all, like not a single joke. The humor was either a no response at best, but definitely a physically wincing from secondhand embarrassment at worst. Related to this, I feel like most of the dialogue reads like either someone who just learned what swear words are and thinks theyāre really cool and funny or genuinely forced. At times most of the characters talk with the same delivery, cadence, personality, etc, itās really obvious they were all written by the same person or group. And that even goes for background and side characters, too. This is a criticism Iāve never seen said: I really donāt like the voice acting in this show. Iām sure itās no fault of the voice actors at all, but there were times in this where I either could not hear characters properly or could not understand characters properly and I had to watch it with closed captions on. The clearness and volume of the characters voices varies A LOT even just between scenes sometimes. And that combined with all the characters having really similar speech patterns, there were a lot of times where if I looked away from the screen, I genuinely could not tell if it was Alucard or Trevor speaking cause it sounded like it could reasonably have been either of them (and in some cases it literally didnāt even matter that much which character was saying what). Itās an absolute tragedy that the color schemes in this show are not remotely similar to Draculaās Curse too. I understand why some color combos wouldnāt make it for eyestrain reasons, but the pixel artwork in all the NES titles is beautiful. Same goes for music, like I am never going to forgive this series for using Bloody Tears for a Draculaās Curse āadaptationā and not Beginning or Aquarius or Dead Beat or Ghost Ship or Clockwork orā ya know? These are two things that the series are really known for so youād think with some of the fanservice they did theyād be all kinds of ready to use stuff like that for more of it.
Anyway, past season one is when I started watching the series primarily through clips/episodes reposted on YouTube or elsewhere cause I had completely lost any interest in it. Iāll probably go through synopsises online again for season 2 just to try to better remember what happened in that one because I do remember having very little good to say about season 2 as well and I gotta do that research so I can hate things properly :3.
Thereās a certain part of this where I just kinda blanked on things to even say, partially because Season one is kinda bland in general, but partially because I started getting sleepy while typing. So if I feel like I missed anything season one specific Iāll just put it in the beginning of the season two post. d(_ _ )
can we like, have adaptations made by people who care about the thing they're adapting
Love Annette from Castlevania Nocturne WISH my girl was in a better show
Guysss I am raising from the dead to say I watched the Castlevania Nocturne season 2 trailer and I am NOT EXCITED š„š„š„
