And How That Too Was Created Into Song - Tumblr Posts

There's folk music, meaning "a wistful, guitar-centric style employed by one of the most famous and successful musicians on the planet," and then there's folk music, meaning "eclectic singer-songwriters with proudly leftist political views" and then there's folk music, meaning "a British woman in the 1960s has the weirdest voice you've ever heard and employs it in singing Child ballads without accompaniment," and no one has any way of differentiating which one of these they mean without extensive explanation

yea this really captures a lot of my feelings about how we define and treat folk music
folk music is so interesting because it can be anything
it means music made by and for the people
when i think about folk music i think about elizabeth 'libba' cotten
her best song in my opinion was written by her great grandchildren and each of the kids got to add a verse
and they made this beautiful thing together
with no intention of it ever being recorded
when i think about folk music i think about singing songs whether they be pop or folk at protests because we are tired and scared
but we're there together
i think about joe hills last words
don't mourn! organize
and how that too was created into song
that we sing to remember him and to be brave because we are still fighting for what he was fighting for
and i think about how these folk ballads about crossdressing that my ancestors sang
maybe because they were butch and transgender too
hundereds of years are between us but we are singing the same song
and that makes it less scary
i love folk music
