A spooky season gift for you!
Inktober prompt 3: Boots
In the early morning dark something shifted in the diner. The air, the mood, the electromagnetic field distribution.
A creature hidden within awoke. Stretching and peeling from the bottom of a booth to touch the floor. Disturbed from slumber by the subtle shift.
Bleary eyes focused on the crack that showed the diner beyond the underbooth.
A pair of black boots made from a smooth material and covered in excessive boot straps shifted through the reflections of the metal poles that held the barstools aloft. They passed the booth creature making not a sound, not a whisper, but left behind a waft of melancholy.
BRIGHT LIGHTS!
The creature retreated further under the booth. Grumbles and quiet growls mixed with metal clangs from behind the wall that hid the food place. The scents of oil, grease, sugar, starch, food filled the space. The creature hungered.
CRASH!
A bell chimed as the front door was rapidly swung open. A series of high pitched chirps called out to the grumbler and loud rumblings replied.
A pair of bright pink boots that glittered in the diner light sped past the booth. Stars on hologram charm anklets orbited lazily in contrast to their wearer's brisk movements. Then, they disappeared behind the wall.
The chirping and grumbling continued. The creature skitteted beneath tables and booths, searching for a breakfast appetizer. None were to be found, however, as the creature had cleaned the floor before sleep the night before.
Voices and boots filled the diner as the breakfast rush began.
The creature clung to the shadows opting for stealth as it searched for a familiar pair of boots amongst the breakfast crowd.
There they were at the usual booth. Plain in appearance. Nothing special about them. These boots belonged to the kind tall one, the one that had seen the creature before. The one that slid bits of food off the table when no one was looking.
A yellow, starch stick lay between the boots. The creature snatched it into the shadows and munched on its salty goodness. Delicious.
The air shifted once more. Slow, careful steps tread down the aisle. The creature stiffened sensing danger. This tall one was strange, was powerful, was benthic.
The creature pressed into the shadow's depths. As the shiny, black knee-high boots approached the booth, the creature pressed into the ground. Don't see, don't be seen.
The boots stopped beyond the booth for a second. Then they continued. The creature relaxed.
A deep voice added to the mumbling of the tall ones. The high pitched chirps answered back. The creature returned to look for more starch sticks.
The plain boots had left the booth, and stood instead. They stood beside the waders. Chirping came from above.
A lightning fast movement proceeded an iron grip on the creature's back.
Lifted the eyes of the scavenger met those of the tall ones. Bright, curious eyes. Dark, wary eyes. Brown eyes, touched with disappointment.
The creature had been caught.
IT'S ONE MINUTE TO MIDNIGHT SO IT STILL COUNTS-
