I've answered this before in various places, and again I have no problem with other people enjoying them and only give this info under the assumltion everyone can be mature about it. But the simple answer is I do not like their dynamic and I'm picky about ships.

The first thing I ever saw of their dynamic, after Jimmy had just died, before I even knew fh was a bit and not a one off joke in the moment, was Scott saying "to be fair Jimmy is incompetent." I didn't even know who Jimmy was at that point. And nothing I saw after of how they interacted shook off that sour taste, in some cases made it worse. They do NOT strike that balance to make that type of precarious relationship Work, ESPECIALLY with the context of the rest of Jimmy's character as a punching bag/sensitive to disrespect.

Fh was also the first of the Jimmy ships to have the main problem I have with most Jimmy ships, where he is not an active participant in it, he's the object who is at best indifferent and at worst unwilling and actively resistant. He feels like he's being harrassed after he said no, not a playing hard to get bit.

I've heard they're written much nicer and conpletely different vibe in fics than they are in canon but that has its own problems to me, if something exists because it's canon but the canon is ignored in favour of something else entirely.

To me it feels like the only thing it has going for it is its canonicity, and one of them seems sick of it and the other feels like they bring it up only because it gets attention. (Not hating on the grind, you get that bread) It feels like a manufactured bit that was ended, i can only see the strings. You don't see other duos saying theyre over, it'd seem silly, and they don't have much going for their dynamic outside the context of fh. It's probably the aroace in me who doesn't care for partners that don't feel like they are also friends, and that's how they feel to me. If they weren't in the same friend group they wouldn't interact is their vibe.

It's also... a bit those fans? It's always a bit those fans that tip something inocuously not ones thing into kinda actively avoid. Idk everything I hear makes it sounds like there's a specific group that feel very entitled to its content and continued support by the creators (I have seen people say things like "scott is carrying this ship jimmy needs to step up" and incidents in creator discords). They also like to insert fh into other jimmy stuff, specifically ranchers. An ex can be an interesting element, and I like to add it myself sometimes specifically for people who enjoy them. But more than once I've seen a ranchers hc or fic concept derailed to include fh, frequently under the assumption that if you like ranchers you also like fh, or that its a given its an aspect. (In my case, frequently getting asks for fh or fr despite not drawing them ever.) And fr comes off like one of those ot3s purely born out of conflict aversion disgusied as enlightenment via "solving" triangles that don't exist.

I dunno, basically I haven't seen a fh moment that didn't have bad vibes, and I need more reason to ship something than 'it's possible' and I don't really see the reasons beyond such that one would. I can't picture it as anything but a toxic mess and I don't enjoy that type of thing.

Joel's gone soft on him.

It's true– Really, it is, Jimmy thinks, eyebrows furrowed in thought. Joel's gone soft.

Don't get him wrong, it's not a bad thing. 'Cuz Jimmy isn't like that and softness doesn't mean weak... It's just that he's not used to it.

Like. At all.

He's not used to this side of Joel, the one that sleeps with Jimmy keeping watch, snoring and curled up on his side. Joel's a light sleeper, and it kinda shows. His face scrunches up when Jimmy stops playing with his hair, idly combing through them for no other reason than because he can. 

They're still touchy, always have been, and Joel's never been one to shy from playing rough. He's the same, same old Joel, except sometimes he isn't. Sometimes he's more.

Joel shifts in his sleep, mumbling something under his breath. Jimmy's hand stills, fingers between soft strands.

For a second, he thinks that maybe Joel wants him to stop. But then Joel's making that face again, the pinched expression with the small frown that Jimmy's come to know as why’d you stop? And Jimmy obliges, keeps his hand moving and drags his fingertips gently on Joel's scalp, keeps at it until his features smooth out and Joel's snoring again.

It makes Jimmy's heart squeeze, just a little. He's never seen him so– vulnerable. 

Idly, he wonders if Etho's ever done this.

Joel doesn't talk about Etho a lot.

Jimmy makes a face. Okay, no, that's not true. He does. He talks about him, but it's in that like, angry sort of way where his voice pitches up and his hands get all jittery. He scowls a lot when he does, Jimmy noticed, and after a while it gets obvious that it's not exactly the best subject. 

He replaced me with a cow, Jim! Joel lamented. A bloody cow!

Surely I was worth more to him than that!

And Jimmy wasn't sure if he was, like, genuinely upset for a second. Honest. But he looked and Joel's hands were shaking a little, and his glare on the horizon looked a hair away from hurt. So Jimmy wasn't thinking when he patted him on the back, saying, with as much sincerity as he could muster, You're way cooler than a cow.

(It's a miracle he didn't start laughing on the spot.)

He kept going, If it makes you feel any better, you're worth at least three.

That startled a laugh out of Joel, Think you mean a hundred, mate.

Jimmy laughed, his shoulders relaxing at Joel's grin.

Yeah, 'course.

–The point is, Jimmy wonders.

Wonders if Joel's ever had this, someone watching over him while he rests. Wonders if he's ever had his hand held just for the sake of it, wonders if anyone's ever wanted to keep him warm.

Jimmy wonders if he's the first.

Joel shivers, snapping him out of his thoughts. With careful hands, Jimmy takes the end of the blanket out from under Joel's arm, pulling it over his shoulder. In his sleep, Joel makes a soft, insistent noise.

Jimmy smiles, just a little. Gosh, he really likes his hair played with, huh?

(He'd tease him for it, but he knows better.)

Jimmy combs Joel's hair back, pushing it away from his eyes. Joel relaxes under his touch yet again.

Yeah, Jimmy thinks. Yeah.

Joel could use a bit of softness. Just a bit.

(And Jimmy's more than happy to provide.)

I've come to ask this because the Adventure Time we make a thing is coming out next month. So more smallidarity atau?? 🥺
