Head hung low, I quickly unlock the door and rush in.

“Why, why am I like this ?”

My brother barely gives me a second glance from the screen he was staring at, and for once I’m grateful that he didn’t. Calling out to my parents, I sigh in relief. They aren’t home today.

I take my time to apply antiseptic on cuts here and there, along with icing my bruises. A particularly bad one makes me groan in pain once I sat on the floor. How did I ever get into this mess? Finishing up by pressing on bandages wherever was cut, I change my clothes and mumble to my brother about going somewhere and stumble out the door. I was on autopilot, and my legs carried me to the familiar rooftop where I spent so many days with friends.

I inhale.

I exhale.

But the ache in my chest doesn’t go.

“Niel, you never deserved this.” I whisper to the sky.

I don’t feel better. He will never return.

A night to remember.

“Hey give it back !”

Daniel laughs and sticks out his tongue at me.

“Please !”

My voice starts shaking. The book that he was holding over the edge of the roof held so many memories for me. Memories of me and Jess, memories of everything I hold dear.

“Please...”

He sees the tears in my eyes. Daniel doesn’t hesitate to give the book back.

“Don’t cry. I promise I wont take it like that ever again.”

I sniffle and say, “You’re so mean you know.”

I pout at him, and I must’ve looked really silly cos he hides his face, and I hear muffled laughter. He turns away.

“Yeah, yeah. I know. You always tell me.”

He says that while looking down from the edge, the scenery was always quite beautiful.

I look up slowly

“I-I don’t always mean it though...”

He laughs, the sound was clear, and I hoped that everyone could hear the sound of this angel. Damn I love his laugh.

“I know. Don’t worry.” 

He smiles at me, dimples fully on show. He walks back to the door leading back down.

“Let’s go, princess. We’ll come back another day.”

The look in his eyes were more than enough to convince me. I run to him, taking his hand.

Indeed, a night to remember.
