something something something the yotsuba arc as a play-within-the-play about death note as a whole because at heart death note is about a boy who dooms himself to die, on purpose, then fails to remember that he has to actually walk the path and die the death. he forgets he’s going to be there the whole time. or he just doesn’t care, because he sees himself as a chess piece and not as a person. sending the lamb of himself off the slaughter, refusing to realize he won’t be able to consume the meat. selflessness as cruelty rather than a virtue.
favorite part of death note was when light accidentally killed two people then freaked out and killed a hundred thousand more in an attempt to fix it
whenever someone calls light yagami a psychopath i start frothing at the mouth.
can people stop saying that light didn’t feel any guilt about his murders? it’s literally canon that he had horrible nightmares that made him lose sleep and he lost ten pounds in five days because of the guilt of becoming a murderer. like, before he got swept up in the battle with L, he still felt guilty for killing those people. sure, he didn’t care as much later on, but you can’t deny that he started out as a naive seventeen year old who can barely come to terms with his own crimes.
In death note how to read, it was stated that "light is incapable of loving a woman". Is this true? If yes in what context obaha said this and what do you think he meant?
Thank you so much for this ask because it prompted me to revisit a wrong fandom assumption we made years ago that I never questioned again.
In like 2015, we had all agreed that this is a mistranslation on VIZ’s part. We believed the actual Japanese phrase to be “he has never loved a woman” - a past tense statement. This was because we believed the phrase to be “でも彼は女性を好きになる ことがない でしょう” in which “ことがない” would be a set phrase meaning ‘it has never happened’ if used with the -ta form of a verb. There is no -ta form here and the phrase is also actually “でも彼は女性を好きになる事はないでしょう”, meaning the important point is spelled “ 事はない”. The difference in verb tense and particle changes all.
The phrase reads something like “but he could likely never love a woman.”
Does that mean Ohba thinks Light is gay? Highly doubtful.
The full context is this:

which means roughly:
“Light’s relationship to the opposite gender. During his time in university, Light had five or six girlfriends including those who were camouflage, but he likely could never love a woman. Because there are no people he can form a relationship with on equal footing, Light just looks down on everyone as merely fools. However, he loves his family and he loves mankind as a whole as well. He also has many friends.”
(Disclaimer: this translation was provided by Japanese learners not those who are fluent in Japanese - if anyone more fluent wants to issue a correction, PLEASE do so. I am mostly translating this from Japanese directly because I don’t own English HTR13 and thus have no way to cross-reference with the full paragraph in it.)
So really, I don’t think this is meant as a statement towards Light’s sexual orientation so much as a very heteronormative way of looking at Light’s attitude towards intimacy as a whole. What Ohba is describing is Light’s general problem - he can’t get too close to people because he doesn’t feel like he can relate to them on the same level. Whether those people are women or men doesn’t really matter - Ohba merely never even considered the idea that romance for Light could be with someone else than a woman, lmao.
Does that mean Light really can never fall in love?
I personally don’t think so. I think it means that it is VERY DIFFICULT for Light to fall in love because he has a lot of personal hang-ups to get over first. The “ でしょう “ in the phrase also softens the finality of the statement.
Light finds it very difficult to really open himself up and during his lifetime in canon, it has never happened. It could maybe happen in some alternate universe, but the chances are fairly slim, just because Light is Light.
