Summary: A Jedi and a Mandalorian. Impossible right? Not for Satine and Obi - Wan. Hell, he even said he would leave the Jedi Order for her. But you wished it was you...
A/N - I have only watched a few episodes of Clone Wars so I am not overall familar with Satine and Obi - Wan’s romance. I just thought it would be a spicy fanfiction hehe. This story is also not based on any specific Clone Wars episode, but rather an imaginary situation.
-~-
You watch Obi-Wan and Duchess Satine walk ahead of you, escorting her onto a ship that would take her to clan negotiations. With each flirtatious laugh passed between them, your grip on your blaster becomes tighter and tighter. The only thing running through your mind was that she was the wrong Mandalorian, you wanted it to be you.
Obi-Wan was in the deepest parts of your memory. Ever since Satine needed protecting from the Death Watch, the Jedi hadn’t left your life nor your thoughts. Many nights protecting the Duchess were spent over drinks and long talks of battles you both had faced...
“So you’re telling me that Anakin really jumped out of speeder to chase after a changeling?” you say in between bursts of laughter.
“Yes!” Obi - Wan says, exasperation evident in his voice. “He was lucky he wasn’t killed in his attempt.”
“Stars! You must have had the time of your life training that whirlwind,”
As your laughs settle, you bring the small glass to your lips, sipping the burning liquid the Jedi had brought to your room to share. Obi - Wan shakes his head from his seat in front of you, the amber liquid softly shaking with the movement. You let the intoxicating substance slip down your throat, a soft smirk etching it’s way across your face.
“Got any other stories in you tonight, General?” you say to tease.
“Not any that come to mind, but tonight is definitely going into my list.” he replies, taking a soft sip from his thin glass.
“I feel honored, but why?”
“It’s not many times I can say I have laughed this hard with someone. Also, it was awfully comedic when you were cleaning your blaster while trying to eye me from the side,” he gestures to the blast on your wall.
“And who says I was checking you out? Maybe there was something on your cheek.”
“Possibly, but there was most likely nothing on my lips,”
He had you caught. Damn his wit. You shake it off quickly, reminding yourself of the situation as to why he was here. To protect your best friend once again, the very woman he was beginning to draw close too.
“I’ll take it as a compliment that tonight was memorable, Obi,” you say, finishing your drink.
“Have you seen how Anakin looks at Senator Amidala?” you quickly add, changing subjects from the topic that left your heart full of pain.
He was one of the few that ever saw your face beneath the helmet, besides the Duchess of course. In the end, the connection you were sure was true was nothing but an imaginary one. A plea to be more then friends that had been harshly ignored.
Standing at the doors to the ship, you scan the clones as they enter, ensuring that all of them were authorized to travel with the Duchess. However, your focus is broken by a Scottish accent.
“You seem tense today, (Y/N). Are you sure everything is alright?” he asks.
“Just that ex Padawan of yours getting on my nerves once again,”
“Hey!” you heard Anakin exclaim from inside the ship, causing you to chuckle beneath your helmet.
“Now there’s that chuckle I missed,”
“Yeah, sure, Kenobi,” you mumble quiet enough that your modulator couldn’t echo it into the real world.
“What did you say?”
“Nothing, General Kenobi, just get in the ship. It’s time to take off,”
His face quickly contorted into one of confusion at not only your shortness with him but the backwards step in name. You had always called him Obi - Wan, Obi more specifically when you were alone. It was obvious to him something more pressing was on your mind, but he couldn’t figure out why. All of his worries were put on the back burner as he boarded the ship, enjoying Satine’s company once again.
You step into the ship after he has put space between the two of you, letting a soft sigh release from your lips. The door slams shut under your force, leaning your helmet clad head against it as you dread the day to come.
“You know,” you hear Anakin say, “my master can be quite blind.”
“What are you talking about, Anakin?” you turn to the black robed Jedi.
“He’s blind to your love towards him. Anyone can see it, I certainly can,”
“And I see your love for Senator Amidala,”
With that, his cheeks glow pink, making you chuckle softly and gently pat his shoulder.
“You got your love, Mandalorian’s like me don’t get that,”
Picking up your blaster again, you give Anakin a curt nod before walking to the door that lead to Duchess Satine’s room. You guard it’s doorway, listening to their sickening laughs as you travel through hyperspace.
-~-
The night you had arrived on the planet had been eventful...
At the meeting with the senators, there of course was an attack on the Duchess’ life. Multiple deadly drones had sneaked into the room, ready to inject the deadly poison directly into Satine herself. You could tell that from the ever so stoic Obi - Wan standing beside you that he sensed a disturbance in the Force. But you had caught the deadly machines first.
With your usual accuracy, you killed multiple of the droids that had already surrounded the Duchess. Soon after, Obi - Wan took care of the rest, ensuring that none of the intended poison was delivered. Once you turned around after radioing the clones to meet you at the meeting room, you saw Satine safe in Obi - Wan’s arms.
You were grateful for the mask, but never as much as you were now. It felt like your heart had shattered like glass, its sharp corners ripping the walls of your chest as they fell. Tears formed in your eyes, you had never seem them this close before. It was the conformation you needed that you had absolutely no chance.
After bidding a farewell to the senators, you and Obi - Wan followed her to her room to ensure her safety. You remained an outsider to their conversation as you walked her down the hall. The tears threatening to fall would leave a block in your voice, an obvious tell that you couldn’t afford. With a large swallow, you let out a deep breath and entered the Duchess’ room and scanned it for any possible danger.
“Are you sure you’ll be alright alone tonight?” you heard Obi - Wan question.
“Yes, I promise Obi - Wan, I’ll be quite safe. I trust (Y/N), she’s been protecting me for years. I trust her with my life.”
There was the other kicker. You and Satine had always been close. Behind closed doors, the two of you used to be inseparable. Your united belief in leaving the barbaric Mandalorian ways behind and your youth was the cord that tied you together. Only for it to be severed by your feelings for the Jedi. Over everything, you wanted your best friend to be happy. That obviously meant with Obi - Wan and because of your strong feelings, you kept your distance.
“Everything seems safe in her, Satine,” you say.
“Goodnight, Obi - Wan,” she says with a soft smile.
With a soft smile and a bow, the Jedi left and you knew you were screwed.
“So are we going to talk about your avoidance of me?” Satine questions.
“I’ve just been busy,” you try to lie.
“You’ve been busy protecting the person you’re actively avoiding,”
You sigh, taking off your helmet and laying it on her bed before looking towards your friend.
“With everything going on, from the Death Watch to rebuilding Mandalore, I’ve just been overwhelmed,” you try to lie again.
“I would believe that,” she comments, walking to her small bag and pulling out some casual clothes that contrasted to your engraved armor. “If I knew that Obi - Wan wasn’t nearby.”
You knew you couldn’t lie to her. There was no way, Satine knew you like the back of her hand. With a deep sigh, you look away dejectedly, the weight of your love making your armor seem heavier then before.
“Sit,” she whispers softly, gracefully sitting on the bed in front of you.
Of course, you listen to your sister in arms, sitting beside her as you cautiously lay your helmet to the side. Gently, you pull your hair to your side, the long braid that was once tightly knit into a bun coming undone, the frizz apparent from the helmet’s friction. Satine’s careful fingers remove your armor with grace and respect as your tradition says too. As she does your work, you unbraid your hair, your thoughts filled with the bearded Jedi.
“I’m happy you’re happy, Satine.” you blurt out, feeling a part of the weight you had been carrying around suddenly lift.
Once your armor was removed, you strip from your under garments that hold it in place, left in nothing but your underwear. Satine had seen you like this many times before, it was never awkward.
“As glad I am hearing you say that, why do you say this?” she replies softly.
“You and Obi - Wan,” you choke on the tears of heartbreak, quickly swallowing them down. “He ma-”
Before you could finish, the door to her room flies open to reveal a very flustered looking Obi - Wan. He runs a hand through his long hair, softly shaking his head that wasn’t pointed towards you quite yet.
“Satine, you’re driving me cra-” Obi - Wan’s gaze turns upwards and he quickly panics.
You were in the same boat, using the clothes in your hands to quickly cover up as soon as he had entered.
“I’m terribly sorry, I didn’t know you and the Duchess were busy,” he says, quickly trying to back out.
By the time the stuttering man had spit out his sentence, you were already dressed and your armor plus helmet in hand.
“Don’t worry, General. I wasn’t sleeping with your girlfriend.” you quickly say out of embarrassment, a bitter taste in your mouth to what his previous sentence would have finished at.
As fast as you can, you quickly exit from Satine’s room and make your way quickly down the hall before letting tears fill your eyes.
“(Y/N)!” you heard him yell, but you didn’t answer.
Quickly, you open the door to your small sleeping quarters, locking the door fast. With a shaky breath, you lay out your armor like you did every night, your helmet in the middle of it all. That’s when you gave in.
When you gave in to the deep wounds, scratched and embedded pieces of your hear bursting after it’s shatter. The pieces pierce you over and over as your quiet sobs rack your chest from embarrassment and hurt.
He was there to make love to your best friend, the one thing you saw coming. From what you had heard earlier on the ship, in between the loud bursts of the engine below you. Satine had convinced him to leave the Order for her. It was official.
The heartbreak set in. Your heart was left shattered.

You softly twirl the photo Natalie had given you when she came to check on you. Your mind was in some kind of dreamland while you waited for Jay to come see you. Would your blip have his eyes? His smile? Lord help you if they inherited his cockiness too.
The door softly creaks, making you look up to see Jay walk in, flowers and a coffee in hand. You laid the photo face down on your stomach and automatically see the hints of red bouncing off his hazel eyes, you could tell he was crying over you. All you could offer him was a small smile. He returns it a bit, gently laying the flowers on the table beside you.
Before turning to sit down, he leans over you, laying a small kiss against your lips, making you smile against his. As he slowly pulls away, you can tell he’s holding back tears. Shakily, you reach up to wipe away the ones that had already fallen.
“I love you,” he whispers quietly. “I was so scared I wouldn’t be able to tell you.”
“I already know you love me, Jay. Don’t worry, because I love you too.”
With a soft smile, he lays another tender kiss on your lips. With your arm opposite your injury, you run a hand through his hair and let your lips dance along with his. Eventually, you two have to part, making you pout softly. Jay chuckles at your reaction, like music to your ears.
“How are you feeling?” he asks, taking a seat beside you.
“Like I’ve been hit by a nausea inducing truck,” you reply with a soft chuckle.
“C’mon, whimp.” he chuckles a bit. “You’ve taken worse.”
“The stakes were higher this time,” you reply, your smile not disappearing, making Jay raise his eyebrow.
“I think the pain has made you go crazy.”
“I’m on pain management, Jay.”
“Then why didn’t you take the sedation?”
“Because I didn’t need it.”
“Your screams tell me otherwise. It sounded like they were torturing you, (Y/N).”
“Well, I didn’t want it.”
“You proved you’re tough, babe. Next time just take it.”
“Well I’m not going to need it. I’m not returning to the field for at least 9 months.”
“I know you need to heal but 9 months seems a bit long, don’t you think?”
“God, your skull is thicker then my ass sometimes.” you say with a soft chuckle.
“Well just tell me then instead of dropping hints!” he yells dramatically, a small smirk appearing on his face.
You chuckle to the best of your ability without popping a stitch before your hand glides over to the fragile photo laying on your stomach. Shakily, you lift the photo of your blip and hand it to Jay’s calloused hands, even his shaking from unknown emotion.
As he guides the black and white picture towards his eyes, you try to read his face to understand the emotion he processes. For once, your talent to read people was failing you, Jay’s face was frozen in place as his eyes analyze your tiny blip.
Your heart begins to pace like you wish your legs would let you in this situation. Waiting for an answer was torturous, worse then any other questioning tactic you had ever gone through.
But like the sun creeping through the blinds early in the morning, Jay’s tearful smile sent warmth all over your body. You replicate the small smile with happy tears falling into the crevices your smile left in your cheeks.
Jay lays the photo on the one nightstand left in the room and lays his hand on your nonexistent baby bump, his eyes full of amazement. Gently, you move your hand on top of his, looking down at the two hands over your little blip.
You feel Jay’s lips against your cheek once. But when he goes in for another, you move your head so his lips meet yours instead, a sweet kiss shared between the two of you. As you both pull away, looking at each other with nothing but love, you whisper:
“Looks like I still haven’t missed in the past 10 years,”
“Oh, for fucks sake, (Y/N)! We were having a moment!” Jay whines playfully, causing you to laugh softly while squeezing his hand.
Later that night, you look down at your small family beginning. Jay’s sleeping head laying on top of your stomach with a small smile despite his current state. You gently run a hand through his hair in a lazy pattern as you think about your future. Your blip turning into a baby. Your shared room in the apartment turning into a nursery. Maybe even a ring to replace your empty finger. However, there was one thing you knew for certain.
This was the best shot you had ever taken.

“Dr. Rhodes,” you say with a smirk. “We meet again.”
“Yes, we really must stop running into each other like this. I clean up much better then this.” he replies with a similar, flirtatious smirk.
“I’ll take your word for it,”
“What do you know about the victim?” Jay quickly interrupts, a tense aura radiating off of him at your flirting. It left a weird feeling at the pit of your stomach.
“We found her outside of Med,” Connor explains as he takes you both to the victim’s room. “She has blunt force trauma to the ribs and hips, bruising pretty much everywhere on her body. I need to take her to surgery to put plates on some of her broken ribs. There is trauma to her uterus and cervix, which leads me to conclude that she was being sexually abused and trafficked.”
“Poor girl,” you whisper softly.
“Can we talk to her?” Jay asks.
“Maybe it’s best if (Y/N) goes first, she’s only comfortable around women at the moment.”
With a simple nod, you walk into the room and close the curtain, offering the fragile girl any privacy she may have left. Before you can even begin to ask questions, the tattoo on her wrist reveals it all to you. A viper around a cross, the tag of Chicago’s most known sex trafficker.
“Hi, I’m Detective (Y/L/N), I’m part of the Chicago PD.” you explain softly.
“Are you here to stop him?” a tiny voice erupts from the pile of limbs and blankets in front of you.
“Do you mean Quentin Diaz?”
The girl slowly shifts towards you, revealing a broken, battered face clouded by a mask of tears. She slowly nods, her entire body vibrating at the very mention of his name.
“Yes, I’m here to stop him. But first, I need you to tell me everything you know about him.”
-~-
You stand in the bull pen, looking at the sprawling board in front of you as the team tries to make sense of the wild goose chase Diaz has you on.
“He was last scene dumping our Jane Doe by Med, any ideas to why he could be there?” Voight asks, leaning against a desk.
“Maybe a trade for a better girl, or even just to dump her?” Jay says.
“No,” you interject. “Diaz and his men, they own their women until they die. A dumping or a trade wouldn’t make sense. This sounds like they were using Jane Doe as bait.”
“Then that means they must have some kind of hide out or base nearby.” Jay says.
“Alright, I want every unlicensed or abandoned building flagged and remotely searched for suspicious activity. Halstead and (Y/L/N), you’ll case any that seem like a hit. The rest of you, try to find any consistencies between the cases.”
You and Jay nod before quickly leaving the bull pen and heading outside. Jumping into Jay’s truck, you quickly load up a building you know on your phone’s map.
“Already have a place in mind?” he asks.
“Yeah, this place always seemed to suspicious to be abandoned.”
“Let’s check it out then,”
Jay drives through the packed Chicago streets towards the building. Once he parked outside the building, a familiar face had already popped up. You immediately call Voight, his gruff voice amplified by being on speaker phone, but your thankful for the distraction of Jay looking towards you.
“We spotted Quentin outside of the building on Cherry and Mohawk. I think we found his hiding spot.”
“Both of you, get as close as you can to the building without raising suspicion. I need to know a way into that building with a clear shot.”
“Yes sir,”
Hanging up on Voight, you quickly hide your badge in your belt, your gun in your waistband and put on your coat and beanie. Jay mimics your movements and quickly gets out of the car. With a shaky breath you prepare yourself for what’s coming.
“You okay, (Y/N)?” Jay asks from beside you, worry and suspicion drawing his eyebrows downwards.
“Always,” you whisper with the fakest smile you can plaster on.
Just the smallest glace at his face and you know your reply has left him unconvinced. Nevertheless, he wraps his arm around your shoulder and holds you close to him. Shakily, you reach up and hold the hand that is slacked around you and smile.
“So what should we have for lunch, babe?” Jay says to you.
That word hits you like a punch to the gut.
“You know I’m not that picky,” you reply with a smirk.
Both of you cross the street, goofy smiles and small sounds of chatter along with laughter acting like a shield to the reality of your act. But still, you lose yourself in the moment. Pretending that for a while, Jay was actually yours. That he felt this way about you and that this was your life.
The mirage is quickly interrupted when you spot Quentin walking straight towards you, his head pointed half to the ground but just enough to see your faces.
“Baby, don’t look now but I think that’s your favorite celebrity.” you whisper.
The secret code word between you two alerts Jay to Quentin’s presence. His speedy pace towards you fills your veins with adrenaline, ready to run, shoot, or fight at any moment.
“Nah, I have my favorite celebrity in my arms right here.” he says with a smirk.
Quentin gets way too close for your liking. You go to pull Jay into a hug to hide your faces, but he chooses a different method. Pulling his arm off your shoulder, he cups your face in his hands and kisses you.
The mission fades from your mind, the looming threat no longer a worry. All you can think of are how soft his lips are, how calloused his hand are right where he holds his gun so tight. Without a second thought, your hands find their home on his chest, and your lips dance the same steps as his.
When he pulls away, uncontrollable tears spring to your eyes, no matter how hard you push them away. You take a step away from Jay and quickly case the building. Simple back entry accessible from the alley way and a broken window you or Jay could easily shoot from.
“Woah, (Y/N) what’s wrong?” Jay says as he notes the unshed tears in your eyes.
“Nothing,” you brush off. “it’s just the cold air.”
Pulling your phone out, you call Voight about your findings, Jay’s eyes filled with more worry and confusion then before.
“Alright, get your asses back here and suit up. We have a plan.”

Prologue - Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 4 - Part 5 (finale)
2 weeks. It had been 2 weeks since you had left Jay’s apartment and crashed at Connor’s. Things at the station hadn’t been the same with you and Jay at odds. You still kept things civil, but every time you both left from work, Halstead would give you a piece of his mind. Why you shouldn’t be staying with Connor. Why you should just come back home. He would almost have you convinced, but you knew him too well. Jay would always hold something back and you could tell. What you mistook as his arrogance against apologizing was him holding back from saying those three little words. Nevertheless, you still would part ways with him and spend most of your nights with Conner.
You rummaged through your small duffel bag you had packed from your and Jay’s apartment, trying to find anything that didn’t have bullet holes or were permanently stained. After these past weeks, you were left with only one outfit left.
“(Y/N), I know this is tough, but you gotta make a decision.” you hear Connor say as he leans against the doorway to the living room.
Looking over to him, you see one of his minimalistic mugs in hand, filled with a steaming liquid. In only sweatpants from your last...session, he looked like a perfectly handsome mess. Connor Rhodes was the perfect guy. Good job, smart, sarcastic, sweet, caring, unbelievably good looking. But deep down you knew he was too perfect. You wanted your fucked up boy from the army who would lay his life on the line for you in a heartbeat. The guy who made mistakes with you but would always return to make things right. You wanted Jay Halstead.
“Think you can spare some room for me here?” you ask with a half hearted smile.
“I always will. But both you and I know this won’t last because you took the easy way out. You’re always going to want-”
“Him...” you whisper as your hand graces over one of Jay’s shirts that had found its way into your bag.
Gently, you pick up the worn out garment and run your fingers along the collar. Even without pressing your face to it, you knew it would smell like him. Smell like home.
“Need a ride?” Connor asks softly.
Shaking your head, you quickly pack up and grab your keys. Before leaving Connor’s apartment, you turn to him with a sad smile.
“I’m sorry, I know this probably didn’t turn out like you wanted it too.”
“No hard feelings, this was temporary. And it was lots of fun. But you both deserve to be happy.” he replies with a smile.
You smile too and nod before leaving and going to your car. After throwing your duffel in the back and yourself into the driver’s seat, you were on your way home.
Parking in the same spot as you always did, you turn and pull the keys from the ignition as your eyes scan over the building. The living room light was still on, a small flickering every now and then telling you that Jay was probably watching the Hawks game.
You step out with a deep breath, bag in hand, your exhale crystallizing into fog from Chicago’s chilly winter weather. Walking towards the door, you unlock it with the keys you have and walk in, dropping your duffel by the door.
“Will, I’m not in the mood.” you hear Jay say from your living room.
Softly walking in, you see the small collection of beers that hadn’t taken Jay’s edge off strewn around him. The dark circles you had seen develop over the past weeks looked so much darker now. Tears filled your eyes at the realization that he was right, you were letting your extra feelings get in the way of what matters. Your friendship.
“It’s not Will, Jay,” you say.
Jay quickly twists from his lounging position to see you. It’s like he couldn’t stand up fast enough as he rushes towards you, pulling you into a tight hug. Gently, you wrap your arms around him in a friendly way, holding him close to you.
“I’m so sorry, (Y/N).” you hear him mumble.
“Enough of that, I’m home now.”
He pulls away just a touch, your faces proximity making your cheeks light up like red bulbs from Christmas lights. For a moment, you wish that he take that one step forwards. That his lips dance with yours when danger isn’t looming. But your wishes are futile as he takes more steps away from you.
“I’ll get you a beer,” he says as he backs away more, clearing up all the empty beer bottles before disappearing into the kitchen.
You only nod before plopping yourself on the end of the couch you claimed as yours. Soon enough, Jay returned with two beer bottles, sitting on his end of the couch while tossing a blanket over to you. You take both gratefully, sipping your beer while curling up into the soft material.
Two beers turned into twenty, giving both of you a slight buzz. The Hawks game had changed to Brooklyn Nine Nine. The space between you and Jay had shrunk as you cuddled together on the couch peacefully. Your tipsy laughter fills the apartment, contrasting the blue light from the TV with warmth.
Your soft whine when the show switches from the cop comedy to Seinfeld only makes Jay laugh more. You smack his chest playfully, quickly sitting up to meet his face.
“How dare you giggle at my misery. Halstead,”
“Oh whatever, stupid, it was cute and I’m allowed,” he replies with a smirk.
“Oh, so I’m stupid then cute?”
“Will you shut up so we can watch the show?”
“Make me.”
You will never regret saying those two words.
In a blur, Jay snatches your hips and pulls you onto his lap. The distance between you two closed as he leans up and captures your lips with his. Shocked, you gasp but quickly return the kiss, your hand working their way from his chest to his face.
His hands somehow find their way under your shirt, on your lower back, pulling you closer into his chest. Working your hands away from his head, you tug at the collar of his shirt from behind his neck.
Another blur and Jay is standing with you in his arms before disappearing into his room with you.
-~-
The bright light streaming in from Jay’s windows pierces your brain, making you groan slightly from the mild hangover you had...again.
But my were you glad you were.
As soon as you tried to slip out of bed to get some aspirin, two strong arms pulled you closer into a chest. Turning around, you see Jay half asleep with a goofy smile on his face. A sense of relief flooded over you, he remembered the night before. And he didn’t seem to regret it either.
“You gotta let me go, lover boy,” you mumble as you run a hand through his messy hair.
“Nooo,” he whines, puling you even tighter to him causing you to giggle.
“We are gonna be late and Voight will be pissed,”
“God, fine, but you owe me when we get home,”
He reluctantly releases you into the cold air of the apartment. With ease, you steal his shirt laid on the floor and slip it over your naked self. Looking behind you, you catch a glimpse of him getting out of bed. Memories of the night before flooded your mind, making you bite your lip and a blush to spread across your face.
“Can I help you?” he asks while slipping on a pair of sweatpants, a tired smirk on on his face.
“Hmm, maybe when we get home.” you say with a wink before walking out of the room.
-~-
A couple of months later and both of you still have a jump in your step walking into work. The squad originally thought it was because you had finally gone home to Jay. But when your giddiness hadn’t died down over the weeks, bets were quickly placed.
Sitting at your desk, you take a sip of coffee and begin to fill out paperwork on your laptop. From across the room, you could feel Halstead’s eyes on you. Subtly looking over at him, you see his eyes on the hickey forming on your neck just below your jaw. With a smirk, you tuck your hair out of the way, putting the bruise on full display. You watch as Jay’s bottom lip gets tucked beneath his teeth and you send a soft wink his way.
Just in time, you look away to see Voight rushing downstairs, armed in tactical gear.
“We’ve got a hostage situation at Bleeker Street Bank. All of Intelligence needs to be there, this seems to link back to our case against Diaz,” Voight quickly says to the squad.
Jumping out of your seat, you rush to the locker room and quickly suit up. Walking out with your gun case, you hear Voight assign you and Halstead on the opposing roof as snipers. With a nod, you both rush out to his beast of a truck.
The entire ride there, he kept a gentle hand on your thigh but you could tell he was on edge. You both hated when the other had to go into a highly dangerous situation, but it was part of your job. As he parks, you quickly lay your hand on his cheek and turn his face towards you. Gently, you lay a quick but deep kiss on his lips. Once he pulls away, his eyebrow shoots up and smirk appears on his face.
“What was that for?”
“To get you to calm down,”
You smirk and get out, grabbing your gun case from the back and making your way up to the roof of the opposing building. Once you’re stationed, you quickly set up the gun and aim the scope at the open window. You have a clear view of the hostages in the room but no sign of the offender.
“You got eyes on the offender?” you ask Jay, not moving from your spot.
No response.
“Jay?”
Suddenly, you feel a blade against your throat, making you tense up but your hands refuse to move from your gun.
“Come on, pretty girl. You and your friend are gonna pay for what you did to Diaz.”
Gripping tightly onto your gun, you snap your head back, hitting your captor in the crotch with your head. He stumbles back, but not without his blade cutting your neck a bit. Gritting your teeth through the pain, you use both hands to hit your offender in the face with your heavy rifle. Quickly, he flies to the ground, unconscious from the hit.
That’s when you hear the click of another gun, most likely aimed at you.
Slowly, you turn your head to see another guy with a gun in hand. This time, it wasn’t aimed at you. It was aimed towards Jay’s head as he held him a death grip.
“Let him go...” you growl.
“Nuh - uh, sweet heart. You and your friend are coming with us. Drop the rifle.”
Quickly, you let go, the clatter of the powerful gun making the man in front of you relax a bit.
“He had nothing to do with this,” you reply, raising one hand and slowly moving your other that was concealed from him towards your back where your pistol lay.
“He was an accomplice, got Quentin into the spot where you needed to shoot. So nah, he’s coming with us.”
Jay’s eyes widen at the sight of your hand gripping tightly onto your gun before you whip it out, aiming it at the additional captor. At the same time, the gruff looking man moves his aim away from Jay and towards you. Jay desperately tries to break the man’s hold on him before it’s too late.
“I said let him go!” you yell, your anger increasing at the situation.
“Move one more step and I’ll shoot!” he replies.
“Go ahead, because you can bet your ass I won’t miss!”
The tip of your gun is aimed directly at his head and you take a sharp inhale as your finger moves to the trigger.
“Drop him!” you yell again.
“Put the gun down!”
Exhale and shoot.
But more then one gun goes off at the same time. Adrenaline runs through your veins like a mustang as you watch the guy drop dead beside an unharmed Jay.
“Told you I don’t miss,” you say as you shakily lower your pistol. Wait, why were you shaking?
Looking down, you see blood pooling on the white shirt underneath your bullet proof vest. He’d gotten you right below the ribs, right where your body was exposed from the vest when you had your arms up.
“(Y/N)!” Jay yells as he rushes over to you.
Blood pours through the shirt as you drop your gun, applying pressure to the wound as the metallic liquid pours through your fingers like water. The amount of blood you were losing and how fast it was pouring out makes your legs weak. Too weak, as they collapse under you, your body hitting the gravel roof as everything blurs.
“This is Jay Halstead, officer down! We need paramedics on the roof of the north building immediately!”
“C’mon, baby, you can’t leave me now.” Jay’s voice echoes in your head.
His hands are over yours as he helps keep pressure on the wound. You simply smile through the pain, moving one bloodied hand from underneath his and laying it on top of the pile.
“I love you,” you say, giving his hand a gentle squeeze as your eyelids get too heavy to hold open.
- Jay’s POV -
“(Y/N)?” I ask shakily, tears flooding my eyes in a faster pace then before. When she doesn’t answer, it’s like a punch to the gut over and over.
“(Y/N), stay with me! Wake up, baby, please!”
I push harder on her wound as her body begins to go limp. Paramedics arrive, bracing her and carrying her into the ambulance as I follow close behind. Both of us ride in the back of the ambo as it races to Med. Paramedics work around me as I hold onto her hand with both of my mine, tears breaking up the blood stained on my face.
As they race her into the ED, I see Rhodes eyes widen at who his next trauma patient was before quickly getting to work. She disappears into the ED as Will races out and towards me. All I can seem to do is sit against the tail end of the ambo, staring off into space.
“Jay, man, what happened? Are you hurt?” Will asks.
“I never got to tell her I love her back.”

Here’s the plan. Burgess and Ruzek had gotten in contact with one of Quentin’s sellers. Jay would go undercover as a buyer, inquiring about buying one of the girls. He was to talk to Quentin about the specific Jane Doe to try and locate the rest of the girls that the trafficker had hidden. Once there was enough information, Jay would position Quentin into a specific spot where you could knock him with a bullet.
That’s where you were stationed now, watching as Jay spoke with Quentin, his hands in his pockets. You trailed the duo through the scope of your sniper, watching each step with your finger ready to fire. Suddenly, you see Quentin reach behind him and pull a gun on Jay. He had been compromised. Only problem was, Jay was in front of Quentin, blocking your shot.
“(Y/L/N), do you have a clear shot?” Voight’s voice echoes in your ear.
“Almost, I just need Jay to move a little bit to the left.”
“No, it’s too risky, don’t take the shot. Do you hear me, (Y/L/N)? Do not take that shot!”
Quentin steps closer to Jay, shakily adding pressure to the trigger of his own gun.
“Sir! He’s going to fire on Jay, this is my only chance!” you say into your comms.
You inhale, your finger slowly beginning to add pressure to the trigger. A sigh reverberates in your ear.
“Do it.”
Jay moves to the side just in time for you to exhale, sending a bullet narrowly close to Jay’s head but a dead hit in Quentin’s shoulder. The offender is shot to the floor, sending blood everywhere, and Jay quickly disarms him before holding pressure to the wound.
You quickly pack up your gun and make your way down to the scene. By the time you arrive, Quentin is being loaded into an ambulance with cuffs on his wrists. Laying your case into a squad car, you spot Jay exiting the building. However, when his eyes meet yours. it’s obvious he’s ticked. Storming over to you, he runs a hand through his hair.
“Do you know what you did in there! He was going to give me all the locations of his girls but you shot him!”
“He was just going to kill you after telling you, Jay! I couldn’t let him do that! Voight told me to take the opportunity I had!”
“Yeah well dying is part of the job description. You got lucky, (Y/L/N). One inch off and it would have been me in that ambulance...”
“So what? You don’t trust my shot anymore?”
“I don’t trust your judgement to keep your feelings out of our work!”
That was the last straw. You hide your tears and rip off your bulletproof vest, shoving it into Halstead’s chest as your glare daggers at him.
“Don’t expect me home tonight,”
And with that, you walk away. Little did you know, the minute those words left Jay’s mouth he was filled with regret. He had hurt the woman he loves the most.

“Didn’t expect to see you here tonight, (Y/N).” a familiar voice says from beside you.
Gently slamming the whiskey glass to the bar’s top, you look to see Connor seated beside you fresh from a shift at Med. With a soft, slightly tipsy smile, you wave down the bartender and order a drink for both of you.
“It was a hard case tonight,” you reply.
“Was it the case that was hard or the guy you had to work with?”
You both take a drink of the hard liquor at the same time, a soft sigh ghosting your lips. Connor and you were friends with benefits, especially after you were hurt by your perspective partners. When Jay told you about him and Erin, you fell into the handsome doctor’s arms. When Robin left Connor to go home, you had to help him sneak out of you and Jay’s apartment the next morning. After Jay asked you about the ring he picked out for Erin, you helped christen Connor’s new apartment. After Ava killed herself in front of him and Jay had pushed you away because of his heartbreak, you and Connor practically didn’t speak for a week. Just sex.
Because of your many encounters, both of you had grown close as friends. Both of you knew each other’s work and romantic hardships. Without the sex, you guys were close drinking buddies. The bed hopping was an added bonus. A release of anger and frustration from your perspective situations.
“He kinda made it clear tonight how he felt,” you reply, taking another long sip of the burning liquid.
“Yeah, that always sucks,”
“Says you! You’re nothing but a chick magnet!”
“Hey! I’ve had my fair share of losses,”
Both of you end up in a fit of laughter, sharing drink after drink as the night goes on. Eventually, as the bar begins to close, you find yourself riding to his apartment in his Porsche. His lips upon yours in a drunken frenzy. Your naked selves tangled in his sheets as you sleep the night away.

The smell of fresh coffee and scrambled eggs battles the killer hangover headache that greets you when your eyes open up. Where Connor always slept is empty, but he had laid one of his shirts there for you to wear when your body decided it was time to fight your hangover. With a soft smirk, you put it on and walk out to Connor’s kitchen.
“Thank god for days off,” you say as you grab a mug from the cupboard.
“No such luck for me, I got a surgery in an hour.” Connor replies as he finishes cooking.
“Damn, what a shame.” you say as you steal a piece of cheese from beside Connor, earning a slap on the hand and a smirk.
“Hey! That’s meant to go in the eggs, not your mouth.”
“There are a lot of things that can go in my mouth, Dr. Rhodes” you say with a wink.
A knock on the door reverberates in the semi - empty apartment as Connor hands you the plate of eggs. He walks out to answer it, leaving you to eat and enjoy the gracious sip of coffee. Your little moment is interrupted when you hear Jay’s voice raising.
Quickly putting your meal down, you rush over to the front door. Jay hasn’t changed from last night but to you, that didn’t matter. He still made the feeling of butterflies rise into your stomach.
“What are you doing here?” you ask as you back Connor away from the door.
“You weren’t answering my calls or texts, I thought something had happened,” he replies, not noticing Connor’s shirt on you.
“Yeah, you being a dick happened, Jay.”
“Look, I’m sorry, (Y/N).”
That’s when he notices Connor’s shirt on you, the hickies from last nights events making anger fill his eyes.
“But I can see you had other plans...” he growls.
“What does it matter to you who I sleep with?! Jay for fucks sake, ever since Erin left you act like you own me! But you don’t! You chose her over me!”
Tears fill your eyes as realization fills his.
“I’ll pick up what I need from the apartment later on. I can’t do this anymore, Halstead.”
You slam the door as tears race down your face like race cars on a track. Holding a hand on your mouth, you muffle your cries as your free hand holds onto your torso. Gently, Connor pulls you into a hug, giving you the comfort you needed but from the wrong guy.
“I’ll help you get what you need and you can crash with me.”
With a soft nod, you wrap your arms around him tightly.
Not once had you missed a shot in the past 10 years. But here you were.
You had missed your shot with Jay.
