One thing i love about Kaz Brekker is the fact that his trauma isn't glorified- he isn't a broody bad boy for the sake of the trope. This came into my mind when i read that scene of Inej and Kaz in the bathroom and Kaz thinks about how jealous and lonely he felt watching Jesper and Nina and Inej all touch each other while he had to stand so far apart. Imagine how detatched you'd feel? That really pulled at my heartstrings cl because i feel like platonic touch doesn't get discussed enough and its so important for mental health and connection. Anyway im tired this is all i have to say
just gonna leave this one here as for the “kanej can never get together” crowd
one thing about wylan is there is simply no one more committed to the bit than he is. need to distract a guard? time to break out into a solo and act drunk just to make sure you sell it. need a reason for being in a strangers house? no problem he'll just invent an instrument repair service to be part of. need someone to pretend to be somebody else? he'll let you modify his whole face and risk never being able to look like himself again just to prove a point. you've been lying to your dad about going to university? he'll tell him all about how you were the victim of a scam just to get him off your case. you need to dupe an incredibly powerful man in front of international governments? he'll deliver an oscar winning performance after getting his ribs broken and his face smashed to ensure it works. no one is doing it like him.
Wylan: Can you come get your freak of a man please, he’s committing atrocities
Inej: No, I set him loose on purpose. He needs enrichment
"leigh should have let wylan learn how to read" why? leigh didn't patch his story up with the sudden ability to read because guess what!!! it's okay to not meet the educational "standards"!!! it's okay to have a brain that processes things differently!!!!!!!!
i cannot tell you, as someone who didn't and still sometimes doesn't understand their own brain, how important it was that wylan did not learn how to read. how soothing it felt to not only have someone who understood the shame of being at a disadvantage, but to also let that shame go and realize that the pressure of trying to meet a certain expectation that you literally cannot meet no matter how hard you try, will kill you.
he's not "worse off" because he still can't read. it is simply something he can't do, and that's okay.

love the message of inej saying she would fight for kaz, but could not heal him. because she would not waste her life trying. love that she realises that love is not enough to move on from something as traumatic as what they both went through - love that that message is stated in the book. because inej as a character wants freedom more than anything, from tante heleen, from ketterdam and the dregs and even kaz. and she’s willing to walk away from him for herself, which is not a selfish choice but actually a very healthy one, especially for inej. and i love kanej, i love that he reunites her with her family, that their ending is open and shows the steps they take towards healing, that they end by holding hands and inej gets vengeance on pekka and a ship she uses to carry out her justice.
sometimes i forget the crows are only sixteen. and then something like this comes along and i just. remember.

We should really talk more about that bit in Crooked Kingdom where Wylan is composing a song in his head and he thinks about how the melody is growing on him but it's going to need a beat, something like the rat-at-at of gunfire.
I swear it was like so early on as well, when he's still trying to convince himself he doesn't have a crush of Jesper (and if there was another reason, a tall, lanky reason with too strong a liking for games of chance, he wasn't going to think about that right now (paraphrasing)) and is later implied to be the tune he eventually memorised the transfer of properties to when Jesper read it aloud, allowing him to go against his father and lead to the I can read to him line
I love Six of Crows so much because the way that the whole story ties together in such a neat little bow is so sweet to me. Its things like this:
A man who pats his wallet to make sure it's there is signaling to every thief where his wallet is. He pats it to make sure it's there.
Kaz glances over to Inej on Vellegeluk when he knows he shouldn't have. He knew it was a dangerous situation, but he couldn't help but look.
He looked to make sure she was there.
let me say it again: Nina Zenik is not skinny. She is fat. She is hot. Those two things are not mutually exclusive, so why am I still seeing fanart where she’s thin?????
