I really like how Bill Pott's defining trait is her curiosity and insightfulness. That she thinks to ask questions other people wouldn't. This also means she can see the dark side of travelling in the TARDIS to an extent a lot of other companions don't. We see this with her fear that the future isn't happy in Smile, her reaction to seeing someone die in Thin Ice, and how genuinely afraid she seems to be she might die in Oxygen. With a lot of this stuff, particularly seeing someone die, it makes it seem odd that Doctor Who companions don't react that way more often.

This inquisitive nature also meshes well with the Twelfth Doctor, who is defined by his desire to question himself, and Bill helps him do that.
