A Meaningless Wish.

Summary: just a mini fic of the cafe scene from the first chapter through touka’s perspective. I guess there’s a slight hint of touken, but it’s just my exploration on what I thought she might have felt during the time. Hope you enjoy~ (inspired by @catsoul2 drawing)

The cafe was quite busy today, many customers, both human and ghoul, filled the shop and kept touka rushing back and forth with an endless stream of orders. However, in a way, keeping herself busy was a nice distraction from the stresses in her life and as of late, that binge eater kept her and the rest of Anteiku in constant worry about her attracting the Doves to the ward. After working so hard to keep the peaceful reputation of the 20th ward, the last thing they needed was some hungry girl who can’t keep still for more than five minutes. She was honestly no better than a five year old.

Regardless, touka decided she’d continue as usual until she felt the need to get involved. Shaking her head, touka moved past a table with two customers that caught her eye, one with bright orange hair and a loud voice and the other timid raven haired boy who looked like he’s never been in a real fight in his life. She had seen this quiet human visit the cafe before, but it seemed that he took a liking in coming around more often after he caught the gaze of Rize, who unfortunately for him, happened to be the infamous binge eater.

She almost pitied the frail boy, but as the years passed, she learnt to try not to dwell on such feelings and to move on in life, more for her own sake than others. Of course, she knew that the human didn’t deserve such a fate. If anything, he seemed like a sweet guy, despite the way he can’t stop looking at Rize, which in itself was pretty cute anyway. Not everyone can be saved - she learnt that the hard way.

As she passed by, touka awkwardly caught the timid human’s eye and for a moment, their eyes locked before she broke away and hurried behind the counter with an embarrassed blush. Along with her embarrassment, her stomach started to churn with an uneasy guilt and fear towards him. For what? His death? Surely not, what was one human compared to all the others?

This was ridiculous; was she really starting to care about what would happen to this mere human? There’s been plenty of times first-time customers have been picked as targets from the other ghouls in the shop, so why was he such a big deal? Perhaps…Perhaps it was the thought of not seeing him again. She had watched him become infatuated with the beautiful ghoul, watched him try to steal glances like a dork whilst hiding behind his complex books and coffee. He seemed so innocent and pure, it was almost sad to watch.

Stupid. She scolded herself and pushed back these silly thoughts. To think such things about one guy she didn’t even know the name of - it doesn’t even make sense. Even so, she felt an uncanny urge to do something, but she already knew she wouldn’t. She couldn’t. Stupid.

“Excuse me!” The loud friend called out and touka rushed over to their tables. “Can I order?”

He was a burst of energy, kneeling on the seat on his chair and yelling out a flurry of words that was his order. She quickly took down the order on her notepad, overwhelmed by his annoying outburst. To think such a timid boy would hang out with an energetic guy like this-

“What might your name be?” He looked at her with these big eyes and his mouth hung agape. She gave him a weird look before she reluctantly told him, only for him to lunge forward and grab her hands. “Kirishima-san, do you have a boyfriend?”

Touka froze up, her eyes bulged and her heart started to race. Who was this guy? She stammered with her words, not exactly sure with how to respond as she stared in shock at the aloof man before her. Panicked, she ran off with an answer escaping her lips and heard him murmur how lovely she was. With her face as red as a tomato, she took refuge behind the counter with clear agitation. She could hear yoshimura chuckle besides her and she had to hold herself back from glaring daggers at her own manager.

The whole situation led to other customers looking towards her shaken face, commenting beneath their breathes on how she really was ‘cute’ and 'lovely’ and it took all her inner strength not to lash out to each and every one of them. It aggravating, to say the least, to hear these constant compliments and flattery towards her that she didn’t need, both during her shift and school. She continued silently cursing the annoying human as his friend scolded him for being so forward. Besides, they’re all wrong - if anyone was beautiful, it would surely be Rize.

And, as if on cue, the door opened and the small bell rang, the gorgeous woman strolling into the shop in her flowing dress, long purple hair and a sly smile as her attractive eyes roamed the cafe. Touka’s eyes wandered to the quiet boy, who had tensed up upon Rize’s arrival, a small blush appearing on his cheek and his eyes lit up. Even she was amazed by Rize’s mesmerising beauty, always dragging the attention from both men and women around her. Who would’ve thought such an obsessive killer would be so desired?

It almost made Touka want to laugh at the sick irony.

Looking back at the two humans, she saw that they now changed the topic to Rize, thankfully for her. It seemed the loud friend didn’t see much hope for any form of relationship between his friend and Rize and in a way, touka wished she could’ve agreed, but when she watched Rize’s eyes glimmer with a newfound hunger towards the black haired boy, licking her lips slowly like a predator watching his prey, she knew that this would not be the case. And they had no idea of her true intention.

Atleast, touka thought to herself, the boy will die thinking he had a chance. Even then, it seemed too cruel to play him on.

Her nausea returned, her strong feeling of sympathy passing through her like a strong gust of wind and her unwanted concern grew once again. If she had the choice, she’d rather not make the guy suffer, for his sake if not for her own.

Nonetheless, when his friend left and Rize carefully made her move to 'accidentally’ bump into him, she knew it was too late for him. A sense of dread flooded through her and her eyes narrowed upon the scene of the boy who grew excited at the books they shared interest in. Something within her demanded for her to do something, anything, even if she wasn’t exactly sure why, but as always, she ignored these persistent feeling.

Some part of her wanted to see this guy again, but…

It doesn’t matter now.
