Double Indemnity, Spellbound and how a retroactive plot twist kicked the communities ass (which also has some VERY interesting implications for Aventio)
I had a very enlightening conversation on TikTok about the nature of these two romance/thrillers, and while unfortunately, I have no idea how to watch them, the plot synopses I’ve seen and analysis other people have made have caused me to come to this conclusion/interpretation of these references:
On the first viewing of the Double Indemnity questline, the reference to the DI movie is meant to be played straight, with Aventurine and Ratio being just as doomed to fail as they are in the movie, and their relationship as equally as toxic and fake.
On second viewing, it’s the complete opposite, and the track (and other movie reference) you receive at the end, Spellbound, proves it.
Let’s start with Double Indemnity.
Also disclaimer I’m gonna be over simplifying the plot/themes of these movies because a) both are singular references, DI is only referenced in the name of the quest itself and Spellbound is only referenced in a track you receive once you complete DI, and references this small probably aren’t meant to be anything more than a fun Easter egg for those who notice it b) this is hoyoverse they aren’t clever enough for that anyways c) the nature of references isn’t going to be having everything be the exact same anyways, so I’m just going to go with the overall interpretation of DI + Spellbound/their impact, picking the stuff which aligns with the actual plot of the DI quest, I don’t care what happens in one frame at 30:01.56 minutes in and neither do the writers
Anyways, how does the Double Indemnity reference on the first viewing seem?
On our first play through of the Double Indemnity quest, we are made to believe that Dr. Ratio and Aventurine do not trust each other, but they are begrudgingly working together for the sake of stealing Penacony for the IPC. Then, Aventurine makes it seem as if he wishes to use the singer Robin’s- also the sister of Sunday, the head of the Oak Family and the one they are negotiating with- death as a means to pressure Sunday into forking over some of the Family’s secrets, which Aventurine will then use against him in future negotiations.
With this setup, the Double Indemnity reference is a solemn warning- Aventurine and Ratio will fail.
You see, in the movie, Phyllis Dietrechson intends to kill her husband in order to earn the money from the Double Indemnity clause (which is a real legal thing btw!), roping in one Walter Neff when he falls for her. However, their relationship isn’t stable and in the end, Walter betrays Phyllis, ratting her out to the investigator Keyes, ultimately meaning they don’t earn the DI clause, also killing Phyllis in the process.
Hopefully you can already see where I’m going with this, but it’s time to draw some fun parallels.
Sunday is Keyes, Ratio is Walter, Aventurine is Phyliss and Robin is Phyliss’s husband.
Although Aventurine a) isn’t married to Robin and b) he didn’t actually kill her, he is the one who witnessed her “death” and in the first viewing of the Double Indemnity quest, we are made to believe he intends to profit off of it, although this time the payout isn’t money: it’s Penacony.
To do this, he enlists the help of Ratio- albeit not seducing him, but still convincing him to help nonetheless- and together they go to meet Sunday for negotiations.
However, Ratio “betrayed” Aventurine, ratting him out to Sunday behind his back and informing him of his plan, which mirrors how Walter confesses to Keyes. This results in Aventurine being sentenced to death, much like how Phyllis dies by Walter’s hand, Aventurine seems like he will die by Ratio’s, calling him a wretch before slinking off.
And there you go, their partnership is as doomed as the one in the movie, failing because their trust + love didn’t hold up till the end, a devious foreshadowing.
At least, that’s how it seems on the first playthrough.
Because Aventurine and Ratio’s plan SUCCEEDS.
And on the second viewing, knowing that the betrayal is fake, you realize they succeed because they do the one thing the people in DI (and I’ll get to Spellbound) DONT do- they actually TRUST each other.
Ratio and Aventurine’s plot is a success. And it’s because they deliberately made it seem like they were doing a Double Indemnity plot. Like they were going to make the same mistakes as the characters in the movie. Sunday falls for the false appearance hook, line and sinker, and that’s his downfall.
They win because they TRUST each other, you can even say because they actually LOVE each other, unlike the characters in the movie, where it’s more list than anything else. Walter and Phyllis don’t make it together to the end but Ratio and Aventurine DO, and they get to continue on with their lives because of it. The reference to Double Indemnity in this quest is genius because it works both before and after you learn the retroactive twist of Penacony. It makes you believe Aventurine + Ratio are doomed to fail, and it makes you realize they were always going to succeed, expertly dawning the false appearances Sunday expects from them, becoming literal actors playing out the roles of two people who will fall short due to their selfishness. Sunday believes he’s seen this film before which is why he BUYS IT, and god it’s just beautiful looking back on it. He thinks he’s Keyes about to uncover a dastardly plot to profit off his sisters death, and in turn he paints Ratio and Aventurine with the identities of those he believes would do such a thing, which they do their best to play into. Ugh it’s amazing.
And now, for Spellbound.

You receive this track after completing Double Indemnity, containing the description above.
Now, this is a reference to Spellbound, another one of Hitchcock’s films.
The main characters in this one are Dr. Anthony Edwards, a man suffering from amnesia, and Dr. Constance Peterson, a psychoanalyst who he was meant to replace, who discovers a dark secret about Edward’s while they fall for one another; he’s an imposter. He believes he killed the real Dr. Edward’s, but she thinks he’s just suffering from a guilt complex. Fake Edward’s goes missing, and the real Edward’s assistant arrived and informs them that he’s missing. She finds Fake Edward again, living under the pseudonym John Brown, and although he tries to leave, she convinces him to stay, telling him that with the help of her mentor, psychoanalysis can help recover his lost memories.
Through an incredibly complicated psychoanalysis of dream, Constance begins to uncover the truth- learning the person who believes himself to be Dr. Edward’s (and is using the pseudonym John Brown) is actually a man named John Ballantyne. Ballantyne accidentally caused the death of his younger brother in the past, resulting in his deep guilt, as well as recalling the location where the real Edwards died- skiing off a cliff to his death. With his memories, they find the body, but it has a bullet wound, so Ballantyne is taken into custody.
However, her boss, Dr. Murchison lets it slip that he actually used to know (and didn’t like) Dr. Edwards, and through another complicated sequence gets him to confess his guilt and ultimately kill himself, which frees Ballantyne, ending the movie with the two going on a honeymoon.
So, what does this mean in the context of the quest line?
Well, let’s say Ballantyne and Constance are representative of Ratio and Aventurine respectively.
“Every psychoanalyst must first have someone else diagnose them.”
If we read Aventurine as the psychoanalyst (Constance) and Ratio as the diagnoser/doctor (Ballantyne), it reveals an interesting interpretation.
That being that they knew the truth from the start/ they had already succeeded.
Or in other words, unlike in Double Indemnity, in Spellbound, they actually succeed.
In the film, Constance is the one doing the diagnosing, the one trying to figure out the truth, and you can see that in Aventurine pretending he’s trying to find out the truth behind Robin’s death. However, in the DI quest, it’s the opposite. Ratio’s as Ballantyne is the one doing the diagnosing for the psychoanalysist, Constance, or rather, Aventurine.
To diagnose someone, you must be very familiar with them, or at the very least the ailment plaguing them, and Ratio he knows Aventurine through and through at the start, and what plagues him (his own sense of meaninglessness) unlike the protagonists in Spellbound who despite falling for one another quickly, don’t begin being intimately familiar with one another.
In this way, they have already succeeded. Aventurine and Ratio already know one another, and while they might not know the reason behind Robin’s death, that was never what they were searching for in the beginning, meaning they effectively can skip through all the drama (aka the ups and downs of Spellbound, finding out the truth behind Robin’s/Edwards’ death), and reach their happy ending- a honeymoon; or in DI’s case, Aventurine attaining his cornerstone, and fulfilling his end of the plan.
Interestingly, Aventurine slots into the role of Ballantyne and Ratio as Constance equally well, with the phone call Constance makes to save Ballantyne being reminiscent of the note Ratio makes to save Aventurine, as well as Aventurine being the replacement, or in the sense, the one to find the truth about Robin.
Personally, I think Aventurine and Ratio are reminiscent of both the main leads in Spellbound, which is why it’s complicated to discern the meaning of the reference. Oh how I wish I knew what the original Chinese description for this was (if you do please tell me 🙏).
Is it just meant to signify them being in love? Is it meant to signify that they will succeed, due to how well they know each other? Is it both, which is what the inclusion of Double Indemnity (the movie) suggests?
Either way, it adds onto the already present idea that the trust between Aventurine and Ratio is what allowed them to succeed in Penacony, and that’s not just something expressed by these movie references.
Think Aventurines Eidolons: Stag Hunt Game and Prisoner’s Dilemma, both of which are game theories about trust. Or how Aventurine says that Ratio knows him best, or how Ratio entrusts Aventurine with close secrets of his, like him being the “Genius” of the council of Mundanites.
“Do you trust me?” “That depends on you.”
These are 2 lines in their 2.0 conversation that really stick out to me. Ratio will always offer his trust so long as Aventurine can prove himself worthy of it, and as we have seen, Aventurine always delivers, proving himself long before Penacony in the Final Victor lightcone, albeit in his weird homoerotic way.
Therefore Ratio will always trust him.
And because of that, they win.
Now whether you take the deep trust between them to be romantic or platonic, or infer the literal honeymoon at the end of Spellbound to mean something for Aventio, either way the feeling absolutely there, and it’s crucial for an understanding of their relationship.
Also damn, the retroactive plot twist fucking slaps.
hey so protip if you have abusive parents and need to get around the house as quietly as possible, stay close to furniture and other heavy stuff because the floor is settled there and it’s less likely to creak
Something something me and ma mamah rolled into the distant fog

You are going to laugh until your stomach hurts again. You're going to be in awe of a sunset. Watch your favorite show while you eat your favorite food. Find money on the street. Discover a great band you haven't heard of before. You will find your way back.
I actually really like how Ruan Mei isn't a stereotypical mad scientist and is generally a very socially awkward person who doesn't really know how to process emotional connections and social ques with people. I would argue that she exhibits signs of an individual within the spectrum, and consciously knows how she comes across as cold and distant to people. It actually kinda shows when she interacts with Stelle( Yes im using the Femc as an example because that's who I play as in Star rail) She uses a truth serum on her because she doesn't know how to trust people easily, yet still makes an effort to try and bond with her and tell her her inner most thoughts and personal history. And even shows remorse for not telling her more about the emanator of propagation clone, and states that her not telling her stemmed more from not knowing how to communicate with others.
She finds emotional bonds to be fleeting, yet still craved to have a confidant to talk to and open herself up to. It's actually kind of sweet that the very last conversation Stelle has right after she tells you that it's better for both of them if they forget about each other, can be Stelle promising her that she won't forget about Ruan Mei, even if her memories are wiped completely. And Ruan Mei acknowledging Stelles determination and probably happy that she was able to form a sort of bond with someone, no matter how fleeting it might be.

This is what happens when ur boyfriend turns into a duck that loses it's human brain but still (annoyingly) retains the obnoxious personality and the want to gamble (to your (Veritas Ratio) dismay)
so now you have to take care of ur weird no but yes but actually wtf situationship coworker while trying to find a way to turn him back
he is also (very annoyingly) turned into the animal you have been hyperfixated on for your whole life to the point you can't even remember when it started (at this point you might have just came out of ur mamah like this)
so that makes him look even more (ANNOYINGLY) cuter to you then usual
oh and this is how you found him after you came back from ur teacher job (he found the huge back of duck food and turned into a chong)
(you hope this won't translate when you find a way to turn him back cause yk he is probably gonna be upset about it and be a problem for him that you didn't intend)
(another part of you also hopes it does translate cause Nous it would be SO funny..... and he would look cute with some chub on him HOW SAID THAT!?)
Also he likes to wear those stupid glasses all the time for some reason and at this point you think it might be just to mess with you
He also entered on you when you were having a bath and started flapping it's wings like he wanted to join and all your self restrain and shame flew right out the window cause he (VERY ANNOYINGLY) looked to cute for you to refuse
"This must be his duck needs speaking" you tell yourself and try not to think about it further as you got this chonky duck come to you and snuggling in ur boobah
.....
Veritasbrain.exe has stopped working
You instantly pull him away but he looks at you sad and dejected and swims on the other side of the bathtub and stands with his back at you (ok drama queen)
And you just down at ur own reflection in the water and wonder HOW in the world you managed to end up in this situation and very reluctantly tell him to "come here" and let him snuggle
Because you feel bad. Because whatever this behavior is must be some part of Aventurine that wants affection (right?) and knowing the little you know about his life you definitely could see why. Because you are a buffon in love with ur currently-turned-duck crush and if you can't have him snuggle with you in human form then fuck it let it be in this form. Especially since he was the one who initiated the action.
You have no clue if he will remember all this or not but you just hope he won't be mad at you or think of you weirdly for this. You just wanted to give him ur affection after all (like you've been craving to do all this time before this whole duck fiasco)
(Aventurine does remember.... everything in fact. His whole mental state was something akin to being hit with a stupidnator beam, turning his brain mush to something free of thoughts that might hold him back to do things. If he wants to eat that whole bag of duck food he will cause that's what he wants to do rn and he doesn't have the mental capacity to think about it further.)
You pet him and can't hold back anymore and vent about everything that is them and how them makes you feel and basically confess to your very on-cloud-line relaxed turned duck crush
Something Something, you managed to find a way to turn him back
Something something Aventurine acts like he doesn't remember anything when Ratio asks
Something something you (very awkwardly) turn back to ur own lifes until you are put on a mission together and something gets Aventurin to confess that, yes, he does in fact remember everything.
Something something happy ending for these fools (shouldn't. I hate them. *incorrect buzzer*) they confess and talk it out. Aventurine suggests having a bath together again and Ratio rolls his eyes exasperated.
They cuddle in the bath and Aven says something snarky that makes Ratio say "I think I liked having a bath with your duck version way more" and Aventurine says "By how many pictures I remember you took of me as a duck I don't doubt you liked me I was all feathers"
.... "You remember that too!?"
"I told you doc. I remember everything."
"....Nous give me strength ughhh" *puts head in hands*
Aventurine lets out a laugh that sounds so melodic, angelic and true that you can't help but thank the universe it let you two meat and faith allowed you to be his lover and have his love, laugh and everything that is the man you have fallen for.
.....
and you of course have to rain on his parade cause you can't let him have the win by reminding him of how he ate that whole bag of duck food and had to burn those calories down after he turned back 🤭

I HATE THEM SM AGHDHSJSJSLSNSI
(this is so self indulgent brainrot at it's peak but idc🥰)
get them out of my head rn, they make me S S S ICK

I love how you draw hoyo characters as animals. What would Aventurine be if I may ask?
Peacock, he does build/act like a peacock. Even Sparkle also call him a peacock, if I recall.
This is a peacock.

I love the way you see it with Feixiao actually! I thought of it as said in the analysis but ur way of seeing it also makes perfect sense! :D
But you are not seeing a crucial thing about Self-Annihilators: they didn't choose to be Self-Annihilators
S-A is a curse that chooses you. From both Acheron and possibly Jiaoqiu, it looks like you get cursed with it when you have gone through something so traumatic that leaves your brain and how it sees everything so fucked that IX looks at you and says "See! That's exactly what I'm saying! I'm glad we think the same! :D" and BOOM cursed with depression for the rest of ur days (fun for the whole family👍)
Our first Self-Annihilator character in the game is Acheron and she is literally going against it. The person and feelings she felt that made this curse be able to choose her no longer exist but she still is a S-A.
Same case with Jiaoqiu, even if things get better for him and he doesn't agree with all the nihilistic stuff anymore, he still will be stuck with this S-A curse.
We have S-A in game who chose to go against it and are looking for a cure with Doctors of Chaos but that didn't make their S-A go away.
Is Jiaoqiu a Self-Annihilator?: an analysis into the Self-Annihilator condition (with Acheron and Jiaoqiu as case studies)

Soooouuuu pink fox man huh so pretty right? Sure nothing sad going on in the background..... *sobs*
This be the kind of brainrot you get as a Acheron main and Jiaoqiu haver 😮💨 :,)
sighs....WE ARE BACK IN THE BUILDING AGAIN!!!😭
Ok ok, enough fooling around let's get to business *rolls sleeves*. I'm gonna be using S-A for short to refer to Self-Annihilators through all this cause it's a mouthful to write.
TRIGGER WARNING: this post tackles depression and speaks of the nihilistic feelings it brings. It's not too major but if talking about stuff like this can be triggering, please advance with caution.🙏
What does it mean to be a Self-Annihilator? And the similarities between Acheron and Jiaoqiu's stories

Tldr: basically to have severe depression but much worse! :D (yaaaaay! :D)
From the ever so gracious Data Bank, S-A are described as people who have unintentionally but ireversibile stepped into the shadow of IX
To better understand these flowery words by giving Acheron as an example:
When it comes to Acheron, she stepped into THEIR shadow when it all lost meaning to her. She fought against the kami with other blades only for everyone to die. She managed to finally slay the kami but at what price? Why could that sword only be forged from this situation? Why did all have to be swallowed by naught for this blade to be made? What was the point of all this fighting and struggle if it all ultimately ended this way? If the ending never existed? If they all walked into IX shadow a long time ago?
Two worlds how pointlessly fought against one another, only for the ending to be even more pointless.
Because of all this trauma, like all soldiers coming back from a pointless war that had to witness all their fellow soldiers die, Acheron developed severe depression aka unintentionally stepped into IX shadow.
Depression isn't something you actively choose or agree with, it (annoyingly) chooses you and clings to you all the time and whispers in your year even when you don't agree with it anymore or actively try to fight against it.
You develop it from trauma (also H2O is water) and even when you are out of the environment that traumatized you, even when life is going great for you, when you have a limitless future ahead of you, it still exists and clouds ur judgement about those said things. It is something that you are stuck with. It's illogical nihilism and is sadly very hard to shake off...
But you CAN do it. Acheron and the other Self-Annihilators are proof.

There are two types of S-A: the ones who give up and succumb to it and the ones who fight back. Much like in real life (sadly)
Acheron is someone with severe depression who, despite it being uncureable, chose to show defiance against the predicament it brings by fighting back against it and actively trying to prove it wrong. Wrong not to herself, cause she knows THEIR wrong, but to prove THEM wrong to THEMSELVES.

How does this all connect to Jiaoqiu's story?: A Moment Among the Stars and Character Story Analysis

Both Acheron and Jiaoqiu have trauma from war, war that asks them "what was the point of everything you've done in the end?"
For Acheron:
What was the point of fighting if the ending was predetermined?( "Even if the ending is predetermined, that's fine. There are countless things that humans cannot change. But before the end, there are many things that humans can do while on their journey.")
For Jiaoqiu?
....
"While the Alchemy Commission is a good place to be, it is ultimately not compatible with my wish to practice medicine for the masses. The one place that requires a healer the most is undeniably the battlefield where the Yaoqing's forces are."(-Character story I)
And mah man was NOT ready for what the battlefield will ask of him and his master knew this but sadly also knew he couldn't stop the ambitious youth so he let him go. ("The elder looked as though he wanted to talk the youth out of his decision, but he ultimately decided against it.")
"A healer's purpose is to mend wounds and save lives. You pull the dying from death grip....only to see them march back into it. Saving one person is child's play. Saving the world is as hard as reaching the heavens. Do I press forward, or run away?"
Faces with this, Jiaoqiu can't help but be consumed by nihility. Question what's the point? My purpose as a healer is to save them from death grip but despite me doing that they will have to go charging back into it again and again until I can no longer save them. Doesn't that make my actions are, ultimately, pointless? I save them from death, give them hope and then they have to go back out there again and have it ripped away by an arrow. The hope of victory, of living to see it, of making it, I give it to them by saving them from death and then they have to die anyway but live through the pain of the hope I gave then being ripped away from them along with their lives.
So why save them? Give them hope? If they are gonna ultimately die? Why just not let them die at this point? And if I do that? Then what's my purpose? My purpose is to be a healer and save them from death no matter how many times but I just CAN'T bring myself to do it anymore faced with the pointlessness of it...
( -Jiaoqiu.... probably.....for legal and anti-missinfo-spreading reasons he, in fact, did not say all that)
Saving one is easy, but saving them all from death grip? Not so. Faced with the weight of that? Does he keep going or run away? Should he keep going through the pain of the pointlessness of it all or run away from it(like a coward, because it's too much)?
"You can't help but ask yourself... How does a healer heal himself?
Faces with all this nihility, he is at loss as just HOW to heal himself, the healer, amidst all this. Jiaoqiu's at an impasse, not knowing what to do, emotions conflict with each other.
"They answer with victory- Every life saved makes for the salvation of all."

"They" probably refers to all the soldiers, the ones that got healed and made it, the ones who didn't and the ones on the bed getting bandaged up.
Which is interesting. Interesting because despite them giving this answer, he still hasn't returned to the battlefield.
"Those I saved only ended up as another dead soul when they dived head-in back into the battlefield. I prefer to no longer engage in such futile efforts." ( -Jiaoqiu Character Story IV)
That despite being given the answer, the scars and terrors of the past will not make it easy to accept it or march forward with it. And that's ok. That is human and ok.
We don't actually know when he was given this answer, if it was after he started working on Feixiao or not. (something to further note on)
"Now you must make another choice... Will the result of this treatment be "life" or "death"? Are you ready to face the end... Jiaoqiu?"
Here he is probably talking about Feixiao. The choice he made to return, in a way, back to the battlefield, the place that traumatized him so much he accidentally walked into IX shadow. Only this time, it's for one person only.
Will he be able to heal her or will she die? And is he ready to face the conclusion of the case that is Feixiao, whatever that conclusion and the answer it gives might be?
The physical changes that come with being a Self-Annihilator and the suspicious desing choices in Jiaoqiu

WOOOOOOO welcome to section two of this analysis that is gonna be so much more easy for me
Now, let's have a refresher of physical and other changes that come with being a S-A:
-skin turn into something like rotten wood, full of holes and scars
-endocrine system disrupted
-becoming unable to distinguish between pleasure and pain and turning numb to everything
-loss of memories
-loss of senses
-corporeal body, mental cognition, and personal memories will gradually fade away
(Ik what makes me violently rage? WHY ISN'T HAIR TURNING WHITE IN HERE!?!?!?!)
Now based on all of that and using Acheron as comparison (while being mindful that her Emnator powers might make some parts of her S-A different) let's look at Jiaoqiu and take some notes:
-both her and Jiaoqiu have two white hair streaks that are in the same place just mirrored.
-in Jiaoqiu's lightcone description he asks himself "How many springs has it been?" suggesting that he MIGHT have memory problems like Acheron.
-in his character story IV Jiaoqiu says the spicy food boarders on pain and Owlbert commented that the pain might make him feel alive so maybe dulled senses as well (?)
-both of them have their hair turning white. While Acheron's Emnator powers make her able to hide it (refer to one of her idle's when she lets her guard down and her hair starts turning white) Jiaoqiu's hair is a light pink but not THAT light and you can see how the white hair fades into his normal not yet discolored hair. This change in hair is not recorded in the Data Bank oddly enough so we don't know how much time this takes to fully happen. 🤷😮💨
-lack of taste. Both Acheron and him can't taste the flavor of any food that isn't heavily spicy or strong in flavor. Acheron directly tells us that through the peach and her favorite drink being Wake the Heck Up. Jiaoqiu's like for spicy foods can easily be brushed as him just being a spice fanatic until you read his character story.
In the first one he eats lotus petals and comments "Sweet and refreshing, it delights the plate" showing a liking to them. But in IV he comments "Ugh, too bland" when eating them again. Even his master comments, "I remember you preferred bland food before joining the army." to which he responds "People... tend to change.".
The change comes from his III story, after Lan hit the battlefield with THEIR arrow, killing both enemies and soldiers. A moment that traumatized him so much that after it all died down, he felt cold from the inside and put EVERY spice he had into his cauldron and only then was he able to feel the taste
"When his already numbed sense of taste finally picked up on the spice, a jolt of current ran through him. He felt alive for the first time! It was a sensation that bordered on pain."
And all of these similarities, ARE FUCKIN SUSPICIOUS!😁😁

Tldr: I'm going insane (the end)
I hope Hoyo's headquarters burn down actually cause I'm tired of getting brainrots from these characters!!!😭
Hoyo literally allergic to leaving pink foxes alone (and melanin- HOW SAID THAT!?🫢)
Anyway who wants to join hands and pray in a circle for Jiaoqiu S-A confirmation cause at this point you don't make Acheron and this mf after and add all that to him with it being completely coincidence ESPECIALLY THE HAIR AND SPICY FOOD HOYO YOU BETTER CONFORM THIS OR ISTFG OSNDODBDODDBODDN
I'm so normal!!! 😁
Anywaaaayyy if you read this far thank you soooo *mwah* muuuuuch🙏 hearts and repost are very much appreciated as it keeps me posting here :,D If you liked this I have some other stuff posted that might pick ur interest. Ik I'm not the best at putting it all together in a neat way but I'm trying my best, I usually keep all this in my head 😅
May the sunlight brush your cheeks, flowers tickle ur skin and butterflies kiss ur nose! :)
OMFG DO NOT GET ME STARTED ON THIS TWOOAAUGHHGHHH
I'm so sad the canon can't make them hang out cause they are off doing their on sh!t 💔 (they message each other sometimes trust me, my father writes for Hoyo mhm mhm)
They are like big sis and lil bro to me!!! 🥹
Big sis Acheron who protects and guides him when needed and lil Aventurine brother Aventurine who spoils her and gets her to have fun!
Lil bro Aventurine being bored calling sis Acheron like "You wanna go on a huge shopping spree? I feel like burning some IPC money rn" but it's an excuse to buy some nice but practical clothes for her, maybe some for special occasions even and other accessories.
They go the whole day and Aventurine mostly gives her pointers and helps her pick stuff and buys himself some stuff but not as much and mainly focuses on her.(something something, Black Swan stalking from a mile away)
And at the end of the day they sit at a coffee shop gossip and Acheron thanks him for everything but hopes he doesn't feel like buying her all this for her to stay.
Aventurine says that he knows she is the last person in the galaxy to be so shallow about relationships and that's what he likes about her and that he wanted to spoil her as a thanks for just helping him back then and because she deserves it. (cause, yeah, MAH GIRL DESERVES IT!!!)
They be trauma bonding over losing their whole kin and kind like that
Also Aventurine realizing the reason he feels so comfortable and calm around Acheron is because she reminds him of his sisters love, care and protection and he would get sad about it but GOD he is also happy to get that kind of care again through Acheron after he thought he will never experience it again and hopes his sister isn't salty about it. :,)
Acheron hanging out with someone casually which she doesn't get often and getting to simply relax and enjoy the mundane life of current galatical society with someone rather than observing from the shadows? GAAUUYUGUIWJS soft Acheron has my heart mwah mwah I need a billion of cute baby catcakes to be released on her cause she deserves them!!🥹
I'm so self indulgent about them but idgaf I'm surprised people haven't put these two together more often 💔:(
I wish more people appreciated aventurine’s and acheron’s friendship. They’re this type of friends who met, had a heart-to-heart talk three days after their initial meeting, and even though they don’t talk about their feelings much, they understand each other so well.
I wish I has friends like that (◞‸◟)
OMG OMG OMG OMG LOOK AT MAH MAN (he gone insane he also very hot for that)

--------------------------------------------------------------

So earlier in art class today, someone drew a characters hands in their pockets and mentioned that hands are really like the ultimate end boss of art, and most of us wholeheartedly agreed. So then, our teacher went ahead and free handed like a handful of hands on the board, earning a woah from a couple of students. So the one from earlier mentioned how it barely took the teacher ten seconds to do what I can’t do in three hours. And you know what he responded?
“It didn’t take me ten seconds, it took me forty years.”
And you know, that stuck with me somehow. Because yeah. Drawing a hand didn’t take him fourth years. But learning and practicing to draw a hand in ten seconds did. And I think there’s something to learn there but it’s so warm and my brain is fried so I can’t formulate the actual morale of the lesson.
IS THAT "Gambler" by HalaCG !? I love that song!!🥹 I need more people to talk about it actually, there are some fun and great fan made song to listen to out there of the Penacony cast and I'm surprised we don't talk about them! 😮💨 (HalaCG's Sparkle and Robin songs, METHOD by Rita Kamishiro and Going, Going, Gone by Will Stetson to name some personal favs) Do people just not get curious to search up if anyone done a song of their fav??😕
Anyway, your Aventurine makes me hold back the words of the unpure and filthy and I'm afraid I might be prenatally banned from here if I say more.....keep up the great work! :D

I'm sorry to pop the balloon but Aven's luck is solely focused on him. Unless he is actively trying to help the doctor out and guesses the right answer or something, this wouldn't happen
When talking about aventurine + ratio and luck something I find hilarious is the idea that ratio could be doing an experiment or something and aventurine walks in, and ratio has to redo it if there’s anything chance related bc aventurine screws the data. Your post with the poisonous mushrooms and ratio having to wonder if it was natural or luck made me think of this!
This is hilarious.
Aventurine just out-right banned from the lab, not because he's ever done anything wrong but because he causes statistical anomalies every time he walks in the door.
Do you think Ratio might be able to actually measure the amount of statistical disruption Aventurine causes, or is it perhaps entirely random or unquantifiable, based only on what the "luckiest" outcome would be for a given situation?
Truly questions worth contemplating!
LSBSISNSOS AGHAAAA Acheron and Ratio who have suspiciously have the same views and Aven together under the Nihility!?!?!? Genius!🥹 (I'm so normal about them)
And Black Swan under the Remembrance with Gallagher who is from the enigmata and fucks with shit all the time? I giggled 😭
Penacony’s Last Supper

Why I think Sparkle is a maladaptive daydreamer coded character and who it plays part into her character as a whole: from a maladaptive daydreamer (and a character analysis)

(Ok folks, this turned out rather long so get your popcorn and water at hands reach!.....trust me.)
Hi!!!! :,D This is my second post here and it feels like it's been a decade but here I am again haha...
This time I'm here with something I'm more confident in exploring as, I myself, am a maladaptive daydreamer! :,)
And because of that Sparkle hit me like a TRUCK and her MADD (mal. daydreamer for short) coding makes me love her and go insane about it at the same time.(it means a lot to me ok?😭)
Sooo I'm here today to expand and shine light on it to the rest of the masses as there isn't much appreciation for Sparkle (which is understandable cause she is a character not everyone can savor) and I feel like her maladaptive daydreaming can help understand her way of thinking.
comments, reblogs and likes are VERY much appreciated if you would like to see more of my billion cents and share with others to further show me support :,)
if you have any disagreements, corrections, different opinions or such that you would like to discuss I'm always open to further discussions as I would love to receive back engagement with these posts (as long as it is in good manners)
Enough talk from me though, let's get into it already:
What is maladaptive daydreaming?
Throw the google definitions out the window, let me give you a gist of it from someone who has it:
it's a coping mechanism turned addiction that can develop from loneliness or trauma (it is also common in people with ADHD). It helps you deal with the current reality you are in by offering escapism but it differs from normal daydreaming because it becomes maladaptive (as the name suggests).
What that looks like is being addicted to escaping reality through it by daydreaming, which can make you want to trade time forming human bonds, hanging out with friends, doing tasks you should, even taking care of yourself (etc.) with daydreaming. Most of the time you don't even need to do it but daydreaming is so much more fun and entering than ur current boring life that you keep doing it anyway. It can isolate you and make you lose touch with reality (from one degree to another depending on the individual).
But people with MADD DON'T ACTUALLY BELIEVE IN THEIR DAYDREAMS. They KNOW they aren't real. Some might willfully want to believe in them but at the end of the day they know it's all made up. If you are a MADD but get serious delusions about it you might want to check more into that cause something is overlapping.
Maladaptive daydreaming is MUCH more immersive and vivid than normal daydreams (what can I say, practice makes perfect🤭). Some MADD will stim while daydreaming in various ways that have to do with whatever they are daydreaming for enhanced immersion (some will pace around the room, some will make facial expressions, some will catch themselves talking, etc)
The daydreams each differ from individual to individual and can be classified in multiple types, some make OCs while others imagine a different version of themselves or make a character similar to certain degrees to them.
We are very much fictional-stories-makers nerds no matter to be honest
Now that we got the explanation out of the way:
Why do I think Sparkle has MADD?

🎇Proof number one: her character story IV

..... *POINTS AGGRESSIVELY* like?? COME ON!! (my "she is just like me fr!!!" moment and what made me want to make this whole post)
Ok, ok, let me try to be serious about this 😮💨
Analyzing this alone:
"It's truly addictive to me" maladaptive daydreaming is a behavior that is addictive to the individual (du uh)
"The more I imagine, the more I get absorbed in those characters" Getting absorbed into your daydreams (and it being addictive) is a core part of MADD and what differentiates it from normal daydreaming.
"the wonderful and tragic situations I create for them, and the emotions they experience in those circumstances..." Here, Sparkle is talking about the characters she makes and how by acting them and playing their roles and their stories, she enjoys herself and is entertained by them.
From my perspective, Sparkle is an individual who finds the emotions of others and how each reacts put in various situations, fascinating, entraining and enjoyable to witness, observe and ponder on more than an average individual.
Which I think is something all of us MADD, writers, OC makers, character analyzing enjoyers and fic writers can relate to ( "no"? ok. now tell me your OCs tragic backstory come on~ come on~ ik you have one. No? Ok then tell me through what psychological horror you want ur fav to go through~ Ik you know that you want them to get tortured by the writers at least just a tiny bit....I know what you are.)
🌸Further more quotes from her character story IV:
"Lies? Come on, I'm not trying to tell a grand story or fabricate an eye-catching experience... I'm wholeheartedly exercising my imagination for my own sake. I imagine various lives, seek excitement, and then recreate them as best I can, and pump the brakes on my imaginative balloon just a second before it bursts."
.... genuinely what do you want me to say honestly, that's SUCH a MADD to say, pls reread how many times it takes to get it. Everything in that is just PEAK maladaptive daydreamingness. Genuinely I don't have anything to add that won't sound like "Water is H2O and 2+2=4" 🤷
"Seriously, having a script is far from enough. First and foremost, I must wholeheartedly believe that the character I'm portraying truly exists. Then, I need to imagine the other stories where the character would appear. I always need extra information to make their motivation logical and emotional."
Sparkle seems dedicated to portraying, grasping and understanding her characters by IMMERSING herself into them as much as possible. Going the EXTRA mile, such as imagining other stories they could appear in, making herself believe the character TRULY exists and informing herself about them to portray them the best.
Which, again, all writers, OC makers and fic writers who actually give more than two dice about their character can relate to as we want our characters to be most accurate and well written and for that we do all Sparkle said.
The "I must wholeheartedly believe that the character I'm portraying truly exists" strikes a chord in me because it's such a ??? NON MADD ARE NOT THAT DEDICATED TO IT JSJSKSJ THAT'S SUCH A MADD MILDLY CONCERNING BUT MADD THING TO SAY SKDHSKSN IK WHAT YOU ARE!!!
OK OK.
I can hear you going "but she is an actor, it's just part of being an actor". Ok Sherlock, but Sparkle is not your average actor. Case and point:
Sparkles love for the stage of acting and how it ties into her MADD:

🎇Who is Sparkle an actor for?
Herself.
Saying "she is so matriculated and dedicated because she is an actor" is only half way true.
Sparkle's love for acting and her maladaptive daydreaming are things that can coexist at the same time. (just like being a writer and MADD for ex. (yes, some of ur fav writers could have been MADD))
Which got born from which? We don't know but both are proof of how much she loves the other.
("But you said MADD develops from trauma or loneliness" YES!! And we still have no real idea about Sparkles backstory but ik damn well a "normal" person with an average fine life doesn't end up like Sparkle.)
(Also no, her character stories 1,2,3 and be at most half trusted as she says she makes them up for each individual both in her char. story 4 and a voice line.
They could either be total nonsense or parts and truths of her past but altered/heavily exaggerated and metaphorical. Pick ur fighter tbh.
"There are a few versions that are particularly popular." "Liking and believing are two different things, but people are more likely to believe in their favorite stories." "Lies? Come on, I'm not trying to tell a grand story or fabricate an eye-catching experience... I'm wholeheartedly exercising my imagination for my own sake."
She is basically toying with everyone who asks including the player for her own amusement and, honestly? Iconic.)
🌸She acts for her own entertainment.
Wealth, status, power... None of this matters to Sparkle. The only thing that can lure her interest is "amusement". (from her twt intro)
Her doing all this. Immersing herself into characters so deeply. It's all for herself and her own enjoyment. Just like MADD is for us and our own enjoyment and entertainment.
Not to be the greatest actor or for others recognizing her. In her introduction on twitter, she says: "I'm not exactly a person loaded with cool skills, and dreaming big isn't really my thing." Which says enough to contradict such ideas.
Yes, some MADD might go on to become writers or actors but some don't. And those who don't could still want to improve their characters FOR THEMSELVES because that will bring them more enjoyment, because they love what they do and their characters for one reason or other and want them to shine like they see them could.
🌸Sparkles elation is acting and MADD.
Elation: great happiness and exhilaration.
What makes her feel elation? Acting. What is her heavy immersive acting that is all for herself to feel elation intertwined with? Maladaptive daydreaming ✨
(wow, shocked, ik)
Sparkles Myriad Celestial Trailer: Behind the Curtain

Next, I want to talk about both her Myriad and Character Trailer through a MADD lens, starting off with her Myriad Celestial Trailer:
What struck a chord in me with it is her "conversation" with her mask. What is her mask really representing for her? The way I see it: it's her MADD and also, Sparkle.
At first she says it keeps on smiling even when she doesn't and that she can hide under it. While in reality we might not be able to smile all the time. Escaping into our daydreams through characters who can helps. The use of a veil to describe it can also be interpreted as choosing to hide your true emotions from yourself and others through emulating a characters happy emotions and state of mind.
Second, she says the mask imitates her face, her emotions, like a mirror showing her own reflection. When writers come up with characters, some might be similar to them through a degree with or without the creator even realizing. This can happen to MADD more since we are creating characters for ourselves and its a coping mechanism so emotions seep through unless we make a character/s that we want to share with others. It's also a way you can understand and grasp yourself better. In this particular setting, I think she means how through some characters she acted as (made by others) herself and emotions shines true, like that character and her acting were a mirror.
Third, it takes a darker turn, "when I'm smiling, you're screaming. When I'm angry, you're crying. When I'm sad, you're smiling". This could be her MADD taking a tool on her.
"When I'm smiling, you're screaming" like when you are content with reality but your addiction's screaming at you to be noticed, like an icky who wants to be scratched. The urge to do it despite not needing to.
"When I'm angry, you're crying" This is her "mask" empathizing with her, weeping for her anger and understanding it like no one else could.
"When I'm sad, you're smiling" this could be the situation from the first instance, but it takes a darker turn so I think the "mask" smiles because it knows that her sadness assures its existence.
Addiction is dependent on your sadness because you do it to comfort you through that sadness. Her acting and MADD is both her addiction and her elation.
From Sparkles tone, she might even be surprised at how, despite her deep sadness, the mask can still smile.
"You're like a face, steering at me" she says at the end. It brings back in mind the imagery of a mirror/reflection. But instead of a reflection, it's a different reflection, still a reflection, but not.
It reminds of when I see characters being depicted as steering into a mirror and they are smiling but their reflection reflects how they truly feel inside (emo ik)
I think that's what it's supposed to mean. Your true self steering at you, it's uncomfortable and penetrating.
Or maybe it's a blank face being unsurprised or just lacking any emotions or maybe the face itself is empty waiting to be drawn on an expression.
It's a very vague sentence, and I don't want to pretend like I 100% understand the meaning behind it, because it can be interpreted in very different ways and only an explanation by the one who said it can give us a sure answer. Maybe it's something we can't even understand with the info we currently have on her.
Overall, she holds positive feelings about her mask but she also recognizes it's kinda fcked up but she still chooses it at the end of the day for the elation it gives ("I am elation" ok girl.)
🌸In this section, I also want to come back to her:

Oh who is she?🎶~
Actually? Good question! :D
I think it was Sampo who commented that Sparkle's name is probably made up (which du uh)
But that is fascinating as well.
We see this girl at first in her trailer looking soft and innocent, nothing like the more.... eccentric person we know today.
If you look closely, she DOESN'T have the butterfly/flower(?) symbol in her eye at the start but she DOES at the end. Which to me represents how she and Sparkle were separate at the start.
"It doesn't matter how I am off stage.
When I'm on stage, I'm just Sparkle"
With the end of this video, this whole thing might be made up go, but that would be too pointless and annoyingly stupid so I'm inclined to believe she isn't fckin with us in this one. (for the most part)
That said, it seems like the girl Sparkle was before was performing for her love of acting, her madd, and for the audience.
But as time went on, doing all of this for an audience over and over lost its meaning (and probably drove her insane a little)
"When I realized that life was just a play, I wanted to leave the stage.
Because off stage, there is a even bigger stage"
Her acting, madd and elation shapes her way of seeing life and others. Why confine yourself to a stage when you can take yourself and your characters to the big stage of life itself and have fun with it the absolute bonkers way you want?
She is very much a Shakespeare truther, as he put it:
"All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts."
That's how her acting made Sparkle see things (to an extreme )
🌸Another thing is this scene:

"Im.... I'm not Sparkle
No, I am Sparkle"
Both in her Myriad and Character Trailer, she is actively conflicting with herself.
In this moment. She shows opposition to "Sparkle". The physical constraint is interesting imagery as well. Maybe she feels trapped by "Sparkle"? Like "Sparkle" is against her? Why is she? Because she doesn't allow her to be Sparkle(/herself/her true self)?
She separates herself from Sparkle at the start but becomes her after and laments that she isn't her than at the end, and only then, her eyes have the same symbol this big eyes have in the back (Sparkles) eyes and she becomes Sparkle.
Which, um, IS SO INTERESTING!??!?!?!
I think at the end, she gives into her want to be Sparkle and fully embraces it. Fully embraces the path of elation.
And I don't think Sparkle isn't her. I think it's still her, just more free, unrestrained version of herself that doesn't hold back when the rest of society those.
Think like how different someone with social anxiety disorder is when they feel comfortable with summon and lets out their weirdness for example. We hold back on many actions because of societal perception but she stopped giving a fck and WILL set up a hundred "bombs" on a ship to fck with people for her own amusement.
Seeing life as a stage comes with seeing the absurdism of if all and choosing to stop giving a sht and have your own fun and entertainment. Play the roles you want to play instead of playing the part.
🌸As for my take on this part?

Yeah, maybe the whole thing wasn't her true backstory, but I think it's not 100% false either. Or maybe it is and she sees it as her playing another role. The role of her past self how is so so different it's her own character at this point, right? :))
It sure was more realistic than all the other stories going on in the background (like come on, Harry Potter, Sparkle playing Herta)
"Who is the real Sparkle"
Maybe the answer is all of the Sparkles are Sparkle.
Am I gonna elaborate? Mmm, nope. :)
--------------------------------------------------------------
*cracks knuckles* OOOOOKKK this turned out quite long Jesus (never put me to write something about a fictional character in a few paragraphs, that's physically impossible for me)

Don't worry though, I'm probably gonna make a part two soon 🙃 (analyzing her Character Trailer, her design, her in game animations, who knows what ales, etc etc~) (no we are NOT done, we. are absolutely. NOT done.)
Soooo can you tell how much I like Sparkle? She lives rent free in my mind actually.
There isn't enough talk about her more deeply despite how MUCH there is to ponder on so I have to take it upon myself to do it 😮💨
If you made it here..... will you marry me?🥹💍
NAH NAH NAH JUST KIDDING 🤭
But if you did then thank you for giving me the time of day and I hope this post spark(l)ed some curiosity and interest into this little hedonistic gremlin! :D
(also no, I don't ignore, justify or support her racist remarks)
I do these posts mostly for myself but someone else to respond back is really nice! :,)
Ok, I'm signing off for this one. See ya in part two 👋:)

Death Parade AU
if you haven't watched the anime, the gist is that they're basically in the afterlife, Ratio is a bartender/judge who decides where human souls go and Aventurine is a stray soul who didn't make it out of the embrace of Nihility and remembers nothing but the fact that he's dead, something that makes ruling a verdict for him exceptionally challenging.

Aghha hii!! Thank you for taking time to read all of that 🙏😅 and for sharing ur thoughts! I love discussing and analysing characters as much as I love reading others perspectives on them and engaging in discussions to discover new aspects of them and correct any misconceptions one or the other has!
That said, your observations and thoughts have enlightened me to understanding her better and I very much appreciate them 🙂↕️
Ruan Mei is a very interesting and mysterious character and I really hope she gets the spotlight to shine in the future (I also got her on this rerun!! :D)
You can also ramble to me if you want, she needs more people coming to the stage and start talking more about her besides meta and morally questionable pretty scientist. Even if they aren't 100% correct, there is no real harm in that as everyone's perception is different nor does it make you stupid. Some will understand other characters better and some less for many different reasons that aren't being an idiot. And by discussing with others we can correct ourselves or discover something new about that said character.
Aughh, to cut short, even if you are not a 100% on ur take, as long as you don't claim it to be facts and you are open for discussions and corrections, I believe everyone should speak their piece of mind about a character, especially under appreciated ones for they need the most discussions going 😮💨
Again thank you for ur appreciation and time, it means a lot!! 🥹
Ruan Mei: a character study and attempt at understanding her.

Who is Ruan Mei? Why is she the way she is? Why does she do everything she does?
Ruan Mei is a very interesting and complex character who often gets misinterpreted by the fandom and goes under the radar as a "sociopath evil scientist" or "that one that wants to become an Aeon" or who knows what ales. Despite her popularity when it comes to the meta, you don't see people talk about her as often as other characters. That is a shame in my opinion for I think exploring characters who go outside the conventional of a good person so much that people call them "sociopaths" and "crazy" because of the way they do and understand things can be interesting.
So I'm gonna try to challenge myself by trying to understand her.
Note that this dissection of her might not be perfect as I'm coming to and trying to understand her deeper as I write this and I'm always open to being corrected and to further discussions (I'm human and I can be wrong).
Getting all of that aside, let's start getting into her:

Who is Ruan Mei?
Ruan Mei is member #81 of the Genius Society, a genius who specializes in biology/life science and a member in Herta's Simulated Universe project. Her casual research shakes the schools of biology but why does she research? What does her research mean to her? What does she SEEK from it?
To answer such questions, we must go to her roots:
Lil A-Ruan

Despite her not understanding love, she actually grew up in a loving household! Her exposure to science was from her mother, who by the game calling her a scientist in quotes, it is to argue that she might have been more of a passionate person who seeked to acquire knowledge and test knowledge of her interest rather than an actual scientist who contributed to her field. But I digress.
Ruan Mei's mother would take her scientific expeditions and thus showing her daughter the wonders of life, biological life to be specific.
When she took lil Ruan Mei to No Man's Lend, the wonder that she experienced as she saw whatever was in that ice that came undone matched nothing ales. The emotional high and fascination was such a big and exciting emotion for Ruan Mei, that it cultivated her interest in biology science to this day. The discovery of something new that goes beyond her calculations, breaks away the ordinary and norm.
Since her early days of life, the feeling that came with the discovery of something new was presented to her and that's what she sought to chase to this day.
But it wasn't this moment alone that shaped Ruan Mei into being so obsessive to break and bend the rules of biology and create for her own fascination.
Ruan Mei's understanding of love

Since she was a child, her understanding of love was different from the ones in textbooks. Despite growing up in a loving household, where she would get forgiven all the time despite making mistakes, receiving snacks from her aunt and being brought with her mom on expeditions and let in her lab, she doesn't understand love.
But why? This is where I struggle to understand, but I think it just might be how Ruan Mei is.
She grew up with the influence of her mother, a research and thus, along with just who she is at her core, learned to be stubborn and to question. To draw her on conclusions and understanding of things and not take everything in the textbooks at face value and as absolute facts. And so, at a young age, her understanding of love broke away from the one in textbooks.
Specifically the "formulae" in textbooks. Formulae is an interesting word to use, not definition, formulae. Formulae and Formula mean the same thing: it can either be a mathematical relationship or rule expressed in symbols or a list of ingredients with which something is made.
The fact that little Ruan Mei thinks the definitions of love in textbooks are formulas says a lot. Ruan Mei in general sees the behavior of organisms in their logical ways and struggles to understand the more emotional and non-rigid explanations of them.
and her grief: the death of her parents and the broken promise

Because of her struggle to understand love and her exposure to the biology of life, the death of her parents took a huge toll on her.
She didn't cry, for she understood that life and death are inseparable but that doesn't mean it didn't hurt. After her funeral, as night fell, we are told she made clones of her parents. (which is insane to me, why are we not talking about this? Ruan Mei WTF!?)
If this happens after the funeral as the text suggests it means she has researched a way to clone her parents in advance for quite some time and years.
And her grandma made a deal with her parents, that this death failed to keep it. (her grandma is also hinted to be alive but absent for some time, maybe even before their deaths even?) A promise Ruan Mei was hoping for them to fulfill. But what was that promise?
We don't know.
But it might have to do something with their mortality. Ruan Mei comes from a planet blessed by the Abundance and that must have affected the way her grandma and mother saw biological life as well as her mothers interested in it that rubbed on Ruan Mei.
Maybe they wanted to find a way to be immortal? Who knows, I'm theories rn so don't take that as gospel please.
But whatever this promise was, her parents death and the inability to fulfill it upset and broke Ruan Mei deeply. That and her inability to protect them, whatever this protecting meant.
"Only science... never lets anyone down"
Her parents mortality and their death was a let-down to her, something like a betrayal. Their death HURT her so much emotionally that she shut down as a result.
Ruan Mei, as much as she seems cold and struggles to understand the department of emotions, feels VERY deeply.
She probably didn't grow up with many friends as it's not mentioned and her family boarded on a research aircraft and explored many worlds which probably didn't give her many chances to socialize with anyone her age. Her family and their love was the only one she had and understood (in her one way and definition) and the only people she had.
Her only having her family must have made her REALLY close and attached to them because without them, who does she have? No one. And they left her, they left her with this pain and loneliness and the realization that:
Life is fleeting, and getting attached to people will only bring the pain of having to face their mortality in the long run. Losing them and having to deal with the painful emotions that it brings. For such is the nature of life.
" "Attachment".... involves the insular cortex, which controls anxiety and pain"
She doesn't want to get attached again so she won't experience that same pain. That's the logical thing to do right? Because the definition of it says this so she must do opposite and logically she won't experience it and be fine...right?
Besides her family she probably never had anyone around, so she is fine with being alone as she doesn't know how it is to not be alone outside her family. Loneliness is the norm for her.
Ruan Mei's research: her addiction to wonder

Ruan Mei's reacher, her discoveries, bring her that excitement and wonder that she felt as A-Ruan for that first time. Besides her family, these discoveries are the only thing that make her happy. But she doesn't have much to discover at this point. She managed to do and find so much that she can only occupy her time with "ik what if" projects like recreating a Propagation Emanator clone.
But Aeons? Oh they are her biggest wonder of them all, the most interesting beings out there to her. So much that maybe by understanding them and what makes them what they are, she might even be able to become one.
And imagine how much she could discover with the power of an Aeon. All the answers hidden to her by the limitations of her mortal understanding of things. Things only Aeons could understand. Maybe she will finally find the answer to when "life" those truly end and maybe what "love" is.
Ruan Mei and her understanding of life

Remember her parents? Yeah she probably brought them back based on the start of her Myriad Celestial Trailer.
Which brings everything to a new perspective as:
1. how much are those clones actually her parents? for Ruan Mei and just speaking logically
2. does Ruan Mei REALLY see them as her parents? Maybe. From the way she wonders "when does "life" truly end?" she might see them as her parents. They got the form and probably(?) maybe(?) at least most important(?) memories so you could say they ARE her parents.
And if life can be recreated and brought back like that, when does it truly end?
Her parents being brought back but the wound of not fulfilling their promise to her grandma. Why do they exist at the same time? Was the promise for them to not d!e? Life is in quotes when she wonders "when does "life" end?" so she might not fully see them as her parents. But another form of life, "life".
"Life" is technically still life so when does it truly end?
---------------------------------------------
Now that we understand her alone, let's try to understand her interactions with others outside her family based on what we know
Her creations

Something that the fandom often criticizes her for is her relationship with her creations as she abandons them if they don't meet the results she wants or have any academic value.
Which is not something I'm gonna excuse because poor little catcakes :( but with what we know of her it makes sense.
She thinks their love is something inherently biological. She made them so they are gonna want to seek her comfort as she is their creator and mother but she doesn't see the more deepness of those emotions.
To understand Ruan Mei's way of seeing it:
Your mother for example. You love her right?(I'm sorry ppl with mommy issues) Because she is your creator so it's only logical to seek her love, attention and approvel right?
That's where Ruan Mei's understanding of love stops.
But no one loves their mother just because she created you and is natural as her child to seek her love. You love her much more deeply than that. And it's complicated to explain why and who right? But you do.
And that's what Ruan Mei can't understand from her creations, how deep their love goes, how it goes beyond its logical biological explanation.
Her creations should be fine. With time they are gonna grow and stop wanting love from her and be independent, as that is the nature of living things. Right?
Her relationship with other people

Another thing people are upset about in the MC's stead is her dr*gging them with the anti truth serum.
Which is bad and a very drastic measure instead of just telling us "can you not talk about me to others please?" but it also shows how much she distrust others
I'm not justifying, I'm explaining:
Based on all we discussed, the betrayal she experienced with others and her lack of relationships in life outside her family makes her handle human relationship in a uhm...very original way.
She made us forget about her because she thinks it would only bring more trouble than good if the MC remembers her and starting on a new slate and forgetting it again and again is the most efficient way and one that brings the least emotional turmoil when it comes to their relationship in the long run (attachment).
She only dr*geed us because she believed that's the best way for this relationship to be. (now the fact that she makes this decision for the both of us and doesn't tell or late us have a say in it is a whole other thing)
But she can also be kind and considerate.
Asta's voice line about her:
"I asked Miss Ruan Mei where I could buy a charm like the one on her sleeve — but I was surprised to learn she'd hand-embroidered it. I was equally surprised when she gave me my own hand-embroidered charm the next time she came to the space station. Her craftsmanship, like her research papers, is superb."
She took note of her wanting a charm like hers, and proceeded to bring one the next time she came to the space station even though she didn't promise Asta. She did it because she wanted to not out of a need to fulfill a promise made of courtesy at the moment, she didn't even promise. She remembered and did it and gave it to her.
As for her relationship with Herta is Screwllum? She doesn't want to be more than colleges. And she doesn't like having to socialize with them. Though she recognizes Herta for being similar to her on a deeper level, she doesn't want to connect with her.
Ruan Mei is too confused on her research and has too little trust and faith in others to want to form relationships of any kind.

To finally wrap this up:
Ruan Mei everyone ✨ *falls on the floor*

The silliest pookie ever who is definitely a green flag(trust) and will definitely come home (trust trust)
I hope this post can be of help in understanding her at least a little better and maybe even potentially sparking some discussion and theorizing about her (cause we can never have enough of that when it comes to fictional characters)
Again, this is my understanding of her and maybe I'm wrong on some stuff in here(...or maybe everything here is wrong 😭) so please correct me if so and don't please don't be mean (I genuinely tried, I'm only human)
