cant stop thinking of what was once a dystopian world w/ a corrupted ruler, who was soon taken down by the hero to fix and be rightfully in charge of everything. only for the hero to discover that the corrupted ruler had a lover, who, despite knowing full-on-well how horrible they were — they still were madly in love with them and enabled their behavior. hence the hero feels like it’s justified for them to keep the lover prisoner/force to keep them by their side despite slowly growing just as bad as the past ruler w/ recountless justification because
“they don’t know anything about what’s right and wrong.”
tw - imprisonment, unhealthy relationships, abuse of power, intimidation, yandere essentially says 'y/n lies to everyone. not me tho <3'.
I mean, you weren't blindly spurring on your partner. The world used to be such a cruel place, so harsh, so dangerous, and you're not especially strong, or skilled with any particular weapon, and your mind wasn't made with a thousand tactics waiting to be used or a hundred plans already in motion. You did what you had to, whether that mean calming a monster's temper or spurring it on, whether your lover wanted to play valiant knight or ruthless conquer. When the war began in earnest, when it became clear the life you'd made for yourself wouldn't last much longer, you adapted, foregoing your velvet robes and silk-lined furs for ragged tunics and well-worn cloth, taking your brave, noble, heroic savior's wrist as you guide them through their enemy's fortress, as you dress them in servant's wear and list off all the many weakness of your keeper. You don't take pride in it, and you do mourn the loss of your companion, but you don't cry out as your hero is declared victorious, or sob over the bloodied body of a tyrant, or linger after a new ruler (the hero who dealt the killing blow, predicable) is crowned. The world is cruel, and you've only ever wanted to live to see another sunrise. You'll do whatever you have to do, be whoever you have to be, as long as it means keeping your head on your shoulders for another day.
That's why it catches you so off-guard, when soldiers march into the small village where you've taken up residence, when they tell you they've been ordered to escort you back to the fortress-turned-palace. You feign honored, asking what you should bring, if a gift is necessary, when you should expect to return, but your questions are rarely answered, your cheerful inquires rarely met with such enthusiastic responses, and the moment you step past the palace's gates, your shackles, dragged into the highest room of the tallest tower and told, in no uncertain terms, that you shouldn't expect to be treated like a guest. They come to you, dressed in all their finery, covered by their own insignia, and they try to share their twisted logic, to explain why they can longer trust you the way they once did, to get you to understand why they've begun to question where your loyalties lie. You try to use some of your old tricks, to coo and smile and assure them that you've only ever believed in their cause, but they're smarter than your last lover, they can see through your clumsy words and half-hearted promises.
It only fuels them, only proves that they have to hold you close, that you need to be coddled and contained and brought into the light, brought out of your evil ways. They know you can be good, that can be more than just a liar, and they're willing to help you, to guide you with their own two hands, to keep you in their care until you're so thoroughly reformed, you won't even want to leave. You were the one who called them noble, after all, who went on and on about how brave they were, how you wished you shared the selflessness that must surely lie in their heart. You were the one who so earnestly called them a hero.
It'd be a shame if they couldn't save you, too, right?
If the bad batch season 2 has an episode named "The Last Domino" that's it for me.
