Hooty and Duo weren't always friends

At first, they were on opposite sides of the war

They were enemies and yet, they couldn't help but search for one another on the battlefield

Hooty was the first one to realize that he was... Almost afraid that Duo had died in battle

He tried to tell himself it was only because he wanted to be the one to slay him, but deep down, he knew it was more than that

The two continued to fight on the battlefield, neither one of them fighting for their cause anymore, in fact, they could barely remember what had started the war in the first place

No, now they merely fought for the chance to see one another

The longer it went on, the harder it became to ignore their feelings for one another

They were getting sloppy, letting obvious openings pass them by because they couldn't bear to hurt one another

But then came the day that it was undeniable

"Give in?" Duo asked? His sword to Hooty's throat "If you make this easy, maybe I can spare your life”

Hooty's eyes filled with tears "That's it?" He asked "After all this? After all we've been through, you're just going to kill me?"

Duo took in a shaky breath "It's my duty Hoot... I have no choice"

"But- But- But what about our--" Hooty paused, trying to figure out how to describe what they had "... Our friendship?" He asked, too scared to put any other label on it in case Duo didn't feel the same way

Duo's sword wavered, and his eyes seemed to look a little sadder, although Hooty might've been imagining that part

Duo let out a sad laugh "... Friends? Is that what we are?"

Hooty nodded, ever so slightly, careful not to get in the way of the sword still pointed at him "I-if... If you want to be"

Duo let out a long sigh, opening and closing his mouth as he tried to figure out how to respond "Hooty I... I..." He took one more deep breath and Hooty feared for his life "... I think being... Friends... Would be nice”
