I’m sorry friends, but “just google it” is no longer viable advice. What are we even telling people to do anymore, go try to google useful info and the first three pages are just ads for products that might be the exact opposite of what the person is trying to find but The Algorithm thinks the words are related enough? And if it’s not ads it’s just sponsored websites filled with listicles, just pages and pages of “TOP FIFTEEN [thing you googled] IMAGINED AS DISNEY PRINCESSES” like… what are we even doing anymore, google? I can no longer use you as shorthand for people doing real and actual helpful research on their own.

Being a sex-positive personally-sex-repulsed ace is weird cuz like reading about sex? Awesome. Writing about sex? Not much more intolerable than writing about anything else. Sex is good. Sex is normal. Sex is only as important as you let/want it to be. Kinks are natural expressions of sexuality. Sexual purity is a scam. Bodies are nothing to be ashamed of. Sex work is no more exploitative than any other kind of labor. If you touch me I will throw up on you.

In which Tinn and Gun were caught completely off guard by the shipping moment.
Musical Dialogue and Extranarrative Context in MSP
Okay, I want to talk about the music in My School President and how well-chosen and/or well-written every single song is to augment the story, give a unique perspective or underscore an important emotional beat for the characters, especially in the early episodes. It’s basically additional context and dialogue for the scenes, and I gotta go off about it real quick.
(I hear you saying, ‘well, duh, Abby, music is always like that, that’s the point of musical direction and sound design.’ Hear me out!)
Episode 1 - we get two songs (not counting the opening and ending): I Wanna Scream Out Loud and Saliva. Getting to see Chinzhilla (and specifically Gun) perform twice in the first episode helps the audience gain important immediate context for the band, their style, their raucous teen energy, and Gun’s talent as their lead singer; all of this is necessary information for the story that MSP is telling about who Gun is and why we should care about his band.
I Wanna Scream Out Loud is the first song we see, which Chinzhilla performs without express consent in a public place, while the disapproving school president stands by. The song’s energy gives the audience insight into Gun’s enthusiasm for music, which can’t be contained even when threatened by rules and budget cuts. We will learn by the end of the episode that Tinn is secretly a huge fan of Gun and his music, and after that secret is revealed to the audience, it completely changes the context for the song’s lyrics. The songwriter’s world has changed because of love; they find happiness and joy in places they never expected, and all they want to do is shout about it for all the world to hear. This is Tinn’s as-yet-unheard inner monologue peeking out into the narrative for the first time! And we don’t even know until the end of the episode! All our poor dorky class president wants to do is shout about his feelings, but Tinn, metaphorically, like Chinzhilla in reality, gets cut off by rules and authority figures before the song’s end.
Saliva is performed by Chinzhilla at the Folk Music Festival, while Tinn acts as the stern disapproving judge. Here, the lyrics fit Gun well again - the songwriter bemoans that his unearned bad reputation has cost him a lover, in much the way that Chinzhilla, as a band, is unduly judged for their bad reputation and not instead for their energy and passion for music. It’s a very on-the-nose moment narratively, since we literally see the audience at the festival at first boo Chinzhilla and then slowly come around, and by the end the whole crowd is on their feet, dancing enthusiastically and having a great time. But, again, if we consider Tinn’s perspective in this, Saliva becomes a Pride and Prejudice moment - not only have people unfairly judged Gun and his friends, but Gun is currently operating under false assumptions about Tinn, judging him before he knows the whole truth. And, again, this is before the truth of Tinn’s motives are revealed to the audience! It’s a very clever bit of extra narrative context, which is exactly what good music should do in any story.
Episode 2 gives us the wonderful performance of City by Tinn, and the story behind his crush and his many failed attempts to act on it. The whole sequence is beautiful and really narratively rich by itself - Tinn of today going back to the moment they met in his memory? To take over the melody, and claim the song like a gift from Gun, while also letting it be a duet with that past version of Gun? And this time, Tinn feels bold enough, in his mind, to sing with him and stand before him?? Just perfect musical narration already. What I noticed, though, that the lyrics add, is context for how Tinn’s feelings have evolved. It was just a crush when it started, but Tinn has had these feelings for a long time - he now sees Gun as a force of change in his life. Tinn’s amazement that Gun exists, the miracle of their meeting; this is how it started, but by the end, the lyrics promise commitment at a deeper level - to paraphrase, Tinn can’t let him slip away, not now that his dream is so close to becoming true, now that his heart is done searching for anyone else. This is something deep and real, not just a high school crush anymore, and City is such a great choice to illustrate that point.
Episode 3 gives us the first original song, Come Closer. It is sung by Por, but this one is all Tinn - specifically, to highlight how eager Tinn is to bring his reality closer to his imagination, now that Gun and Tinn have gotten closer as friends in the story. There’s so much yearning in this song - demonstrated not just by the romantic waltz time, but the chords include many instances of borrowed dominants pulling at the harmony, begging it to resolve. Having a taste of what friendship with Gun looks like, Tinn desperately wants to draw Gun nearer, even if it’s just in his imagination for now. The final lyrics ask the all important next question - could you love me back?
And in Episode 4, we finally get Gun’s perspective. You’ve Got Ma Back, our opening song, is finally performed in-story - and it is, on the surface, about Chinzhilla coming together as friends, united by their common goal and passion for music. And definitely, Chinzhilla is centered in the episode, since Sound’s arrival and Gun’s temporary exit from the band threatened to tear them apart. But of course, underneath it, Gun sings lyrics that recognize the way Tinn’s presence in his life has made it better, easier, more bearable. Finally, Gun gets to tell us about how Tinn is re-shaping his world in little ways, that he has noticed, and is grateful for.
Episode 5 gives us the second-to-last cover song, Listen. Chinzhilla once again faces existential threats, this time in the fears about their collective artistic passions paying off. Each member of the band has to re-commit and choose music by the end of the episode, to take a risk based on love, with no evidence that it will be enough to earn them success. The lyrics comfort them in this, though - love may not always be a choice, but knowing that love is what you feel makes some choices easier. The standard rules don’t apply, and when love tells you to hold tight to something (or someone), all you can do is listen. Those narrative elements are all present, of course, but underneath it, we can also see Gun specifically being sung to - by his mom and his friends, telling him ‘hey, if you’re feeling things, it’s okay! Let it happen, trust yourself!’ By the end, when he sings his own refrain of the song, it’s like Gun is accepting that love is a force in his life, and that he is prepared to be moved by it. It’s no mistake that this song pops up in a reprise in episode 10, when Gun learns the full truth about everything Tinn has done for him. The seeds of Gun trusting his blossoming feelings are planted here, in this song, and they will pay off later, when he and Tinn discover together that their love can get them through anything.
Episode 6, of course, is when we get Just Being Friendly, which really needs no additional context from me. It’s playful and energetic, but also expresses the frustration of the songwriter, grappling with romantic uncertainty. Tinn and Gun, despite their hesitation, both restlessly want to know what the other is feeling, and how their relationship might now be in a place to evolve. The song is perfect for this episode, and I’m not surprised it also prompted revelatory moments for SoundWin and TiwPor. Everybody got to feel a lot this episode, and I think the song choice was excellent for providing an emotional vessel for the characters.
From this point forward, every song is an original, and so the songwriter(s) got to explicitly use the musical performances for narrative purposes, so there’s less for me to say since the contextual intentions are more obvious. I do want to comment on two songs quickly though - Hook and Rock & Star.
Hook is performed in episode 9, a love song full of love songs - evidence of Tinn’s bursting heart and joyous feelings. I just want to say that the chord structure gives stability (since Tinn and Gun’s uncertainties about their relationship have bloomed into something more stable now) along with harmonic motion downward - because, you see, it’s a musical pun; Tinn is falling deeper and deeper in love.
In Rock & Star, we see Gun (and Fourth) really get to show off - this song features a very wide range (two whole octaves!), an indicator that by this point, Tinn and Gun have been through the highest highs and lowest lows together, and have come out of them stronger. Gun casts himself as a lowly rock opposite Tinn, a bright star - and leans into metaphors about how grounded he feels, how he doesn’t always shine like Tinn but it’s okay, there’s no fear. And he gets to tell his dorky lovesick boyfriend what an absolute gem (😉) he is, a star far above himself. What an incredible sentiment, and it really brings their story full-circle. They think the absolute world of each other, and to pun on the title, each is a RockStar in the other’s eyes.
If you read all the way to here, thank you for that! I just really really love this show for its ambition and its follow-through, and I had to gush about one of my favorite elements. Thanks for indulging me. 😊

BTS SOCIAL MEDIA SERIES → Chapter 1: Reflection of Youth (insp) // (detailed breakdown: PLEASE READ!)
I'm actually so fascinated by this scene, because is shows so clearly who Tinn and Gun are and how they operate.
They're both deeply uncomfortable from the start.

Gun's approach is to then put on a cheerful persona, learned by not wanting his mother to worry or feel troubled about him. I think it's partially in the hopes that it will ease Tinn's discomfort and partially because he genuinely doesn't know how else to be in these situations.

But this is not what Tinn wants or needs. He goes along with it though, because he cares so deeply for Gun and doesn't want to let go of what they do have. It might also be his resolve, after feeling so rejected and heartbroken the day before, that he must accept their situation for what it is. These are his first attempts of 'getting over' Gun.

The scene they have to act out then becomes something completely different for the both of them. For Tinn it's a cruel reminder of what he thinks might never be, and painful because this is not how he had envisioned any form of intimacy with Gun to go. It's fake. And it's certainly not what friends do, so how could Gun do any of this after just having declared so loudly that that's all they are?

But for Gun this is the first time he can 'safely' explore all these feelings he's been having! He stated several times before how scared he was for the truth. For the real deal. For the reality of Tinn liking him, and him liking Tinn back. For the possibility of him being wrong and misinterpreting everything. Scared of the loss that comes with love, scared of the rejection.

But within this make-believe setting he gets to feel what it would be like to kiss Tinn's cheek. He went off script for it and everything! He really grabs the opportunity to experience what a 'more than friends' dynamic with Tinn would be like, without the consequences of having to explicitly ask him if he wants to be more. Or having to confess that that's what he wants, even to himself.

And then he does admit he likes it! But of course there actually are consequences, because for Tinn this experience was awful. What felt safe for one felt painful for the other...
So Tinn breaks, and Gun's bubble bursts... But they finally talk! Them acting for the MV needed to happen for both of them to take the next step. For Tinn to truly realise that honesty and sincerity are the only way forward for him. And for Gun to realise what it is he feels and wants and to meet Tinn there and to put his trust in them.
Tinn's confession comes so easily now. No more fear or hesitation. In some ways probably because he has already accepted that they'll never be together. But then Gun confesses too! So reminiscent of Time's confession in 2gether!

Plus the next line "Do you have any idea how hard it was for me to act like I was your friend today?" saying that pretending to be 'just friends' was hard, but acting like they were more than that came easy!
And so, if it's impossible to pretend to be friends, why force it?

And they are even now! On even ground, equal footing, uncharted territory for both of them. And they'll get to explore all of this together!

This is really cute!

Let's try and unravel this
Why fake his death
To force the minor family into acting. Korn knows there will be losses but doesn't care. If he pushes Kan into attacking then he has the perfect excuse to reveal that Namphueng is still alive in front of everyone and most importantly control the narrative. Then he can kill Kan, the traitor, before he is contradicted. Keep everyone in a state of emotional imbalance so they believe what you're saying. Kill anyone that might dispute it.

This THIS is the mystery for season 2. What was Kan about to reveal that Korn couldn't allow Kinn and Porsche to know? I have lots of speculations.
Then Korn has dealt with the traitor and shows mercy to his son as proof that all of this has been for the sake of his family: his foster sister, his sons, his nephews.

There's no doubting that removing Vegas and making Porsche the head of the minor family was Korn setting up his chessboard how he wanted from the beginning. It was risky after Kan told his version of events but Porsche's memories are so scrambled, like Thee said it's easy to convince him he saw something different to what he did. We see throughout the episode different versions of the memory/flashback, but history is written by the victor.
("It's your fault for knowing too much" is implied to be the real memory, which only appears in the version where Korn is the shooter. Because that version was Kan telling the story it's unclear how much Porsche can really put this together.)
Korn now holds all the cards against Porsche. He has his mother, he no doubt knows where Chay is, he has Kinn's loyalty and he's the only one alive apart from Namphueng who can give him answers. Porsche has no choice but to accept. And while I don't want to speculate too much (lol)

Porsche still does not define himself as a mafia leader or as loyal to either family. I think Porsche knows he's being manipulated. He broke away from the main family once to find answers, but he can't risk doing it again when Korn holds so much against him. Korn has what he wants: a united family ALL under his control but I think he's underestimated Porsche. He won't stop looking for answers.

Whatever Korn's secrets, Namphueng also knows. She is the lynchpin in all this that could send Korn tumbling.
Oh and as a bonus:

What did Korn and Kim talk about last episode.
I think Korn told him he was going to fake his death, and that's what this look between him and Chan means. Our Kimothy is notoriously hard to read, but I think he feels exceptionally guilty about putting his brothers through this grief. Why tell Kim his plan? Again, control the narrative. Kim was getting too close to something and whatever Korn said to him in this conversation either convinced him or threatened him back on side.
