Guys I gotta blurt it out Castlevania Nocturne needs to pick a theme for vampirism why r u trying to make vampires rich elitists but also oppressed but also unsympathetic but als-

I'm literary nerd who is annoyed that in Castlevania they gave Dracula, who was a cruel bastard in the original, a sympathetic depiction, but Carmilla, a female villain who was written as sympathetic and tragic, gets depicted as a total evil sex pest. They both should be given the same treatment

Hello literary nerd anon, I AGREEEEE!!!! I think it's especially egregious to distance Carmilla away from her origins as a symbol of lesbianism. Bram Stoker's Dracula is quite literally a very xenophobic work, and Dracula is very much a literal and metaphorical predator. The animated series is capable of exploring themes through a new perspective (or outright removing some aspects to sanitize his image) with Dracula, but they just never utilize this for Carmilla?? For the original story of Castlevania in the games, where Dracula's rampage (maybe because of the less-dialogue heavy nature of the game, too, but idk) is treated as... you know, bad??? I like deconstructing old texts, but slapping a famous literary character's name on a character because of recognition does not provide analysis; it provides sales.

And, of course, the games are not without criticism, but the animated series seems to ME to have created more problems than solved them for the games :(

Guysss I am raising from the dead to say I watched the Castlevania Nocturne season 2 trailer and I am NOT EXCITED 🔥🔥🔥

Why would you do a bunch of storytelling gymnastics with the “oh Mina was Dracs wife in a past life” so you can invent a love story between them when Jonathan Harker is right there in the source material trekking through wolf-infested forests, half insane, just to get back to Mina. Jonathan is right there, trusting Mina with knowledge he doesn’t even remember himself. He’s right there, full of fury and rage, ready to cut Dracula in half and drag him to hell himself. All for Mina. He’s ready to become a vampire for Mina. Like it’s just insane to me we somehow as a culture decided that some musty creepy old dude was more attractive than a sweet charming guy with unhinged feral energy lurking just below the surface. Also he’s got white hair, a machete, trauma, and he might not be 100% Normal anymore. And you want me to root for the COUNT? The stalker guy with bad breath who doesn’t possess a single ounce of actual romanticism?

Like sorry, but there is nothing in Coppola’s Dracula that will ever be more romantic than Jonathan Harker holding Mina close despite her thinking she’s dangerous and tainted. Jonathan holding her, murder in his eyes while simultaneously having nothing but infinite tenderness in his hands as he ruffles her hair.
