ive never really made a tutorial before but i thought i’d try!

all my portrait paintings are done on a 2000-3000 pixel canvas with 300 dpi using the two brushes shown above with varying opacity

(note: a flat steak brush texture can be found in many basic deviantart paint tool sai brush downloads! don’t worry if it’s not the exact one im using, i have several from different sources and they all generally do the same thing with the right settings)

just so yall know

art block is your brain telling you to do studies.

draw a still life. practice some poses. sketch some naked people. do a color study. try out a different technique on a basic shape.

art block doesnt stop you from drawing, it stops you from making your drawings look the way you want them to. and thats because you need to push your skills to the next level so you can preform at that standard

think of it as level grinding for your next work.

Not sure if I've asked this, butt in regards to your last picture you uploaded and all of your drawings, how do you know where to line up the head/cranium with the rest of the spine in cases where the head is turned or posed?

well that is simple, the head ideally sits in the middle of the spine…

image

positioning the head is not the difficult part, in most cases ‘artists’ don’t need to make things ‘look’ right but make it ‘feel’ right. specially when drawing idealized and/or from imagination altering proportions and poses is rather common ⁽ˢᵘᵖᵉʳʰᵉʳᵒ ᶜᵒᵐᶦᶜ ᵃʳᵗᶦˢᵗˢ ᶠᵒʳ ᵉˣᵃᵐᵖᶫᵉ⁾

image

the easiest way⁽ᶦᶰ ᵐʸ ᵒᵖᶦᶰᶦᵒᶰ⁾ is to use the shoulders. Most of the time when drawing poses i will actually place the shoulders first and then draw the head. Maybe try ‘gesture drawing’ as exercise.
