Baron Von Sugardaddy

John Laurens is love. John Laurens is life. John Laurens is Ben Franklin with a key and a kite, you see it, right? -me 2024 (I was dubbed the #1 Von Steuben fan and I will take that title as my own until my dying days when it shall be carved onto my tomb.)

Sometimes a family is a runaway linguist, two army twinks, a Prussian aristocrat and a big spoiled Italian dog

(and a very friendzoned officer, and a drunk clerk, and a charismatic second-generation Irishman.)

JSJSJSJ HOW DID I FORGET ABOUT THIS?;

Damn this is so cute. This is the first time I've actually read the letter. Just wow-

“My dear friend, The table at which I ate my morsel - morsel! - by heaven I have eaten most monstrously … grog have I drank for three days … The first glass I drank formally to the health of my wife & little children - I wish I could have only thought of them when I drank it, but Walker, his wife (I love her, Ben, for her own sake) & the Baron, crowded into my mind & the devil could not put them out again. So that every glass I have drank, & I have been drunken, the whole squad … brought themselves along side of my wife & children - at the 3d glass, I cried, ‘tis damn’d hard, I felt I was alone …. I have known you, Ben, for twelve years – When I began to love you, I know not – the first motion of disregard to Fairlie, I remember – 'twas at Tappan – I lay on straw with one blanket – but tis no matter – I loved you, Ben … if the Baron should not stay with me an hour at this next visit, or should he never visit me again, I will not forget when he did - You will, on reading this, exclaim, the fellow was drunk! But to show you that I am sober I shall leave a blank space for a wafer - I drink another glass of wine not to all the saints in heaven but to all those on earth whom I love – So God bless you. W North Tuesday Mrn - I shivered a little and froze more last night-”

This letter was written by a drunken William North to his former lover, Benjamin Walker, in November 1792. (Paragraph breaks a mine so nobody has to endure North’s wall of text).

North and Walker met in 1778 in the American army at Valley Forge. North was 22, and Walker 24. Both men served as aides to Baron von Steuben during the Revolutionary War, and lived together with him for the better part of the next two years.

After the war, both men married, and lived apart for the rest of their lives. North’s letters to Walker and Steuben show that he was often unhappy, and missed the same-sex relationships he had been able to have during the war.
