Mythica, Quest For Heroes (Movie 1) Thoughts
Mythica, Quest for Heroes (Movie 1) – Thoughts
Today, I decided to give the Mythica movie series another go based on the recommendation of one of my lovely anons. I had previously watched the first movie some years ago, I can’t really remember why I didn’t continue with it, maybe I got distracted with other things, maybe I wasn’t that impressed with it, who knows? But I’m giving the series another go at it.
The first Mythica movie is Quest for Heroes and even though I said earlier that when I first watched it, there was a possibility I wasn’t impressed with it…well, that’s not the case anymore. I really liked this movie.
I love worlds that have a magic based system plus a magic-based system with actual rules to it. I appreciate writers who don’t use magic as only a plot device or a maguffin and actually make it into their own character, if you will. I’m looking at you, Shadowhunters, with your non-existent magic system rules and ridiculous OP magic.
But the main pull this movie had for me was that it was essentially part 1 of The Hero’s Journey. It’s not a complete Hero’s Journey story, I imagine that’s what the other films are about. But it definitely flows like the beginning of a Hero’s Journey. And Hero’s Journey is one of my favorites story types to read. Indeed, my favorite Star Wars movie is Episode 4. I love meeting the hero and seeing them become the hero.
I wouldn’t say that this is a perfect film. I definitely feel like the pacing was a little off in certain parts. There’s parts where they’re constantly talking about never leaving their friends behind and while I appreciate the theme, I dont feel like we spend enough time with the characters interacting with each other to truly feel like those kinds of declarations were earned. But I can give a pass on it because the chemistry between these characters were so good. Just beat for beat, humor bit by humor bit, all of the characters (and the actors, themselves) were able to deliver on it and I could believe these people had the potential to care about one another.
I also love our heroine, Marek. She just has this real childlike exuberance throughout the entire move about going on this grand adventure and her enthusiasm for it is just so contagious and relatable and I love it. The actress also has some great facial expressions, and I don’t mean that in a bad way or anything. Every now and then when something ridiculous happens, she’ll give these expressions and I’ll just laugh because she’s so relatable in that moment.
This is a SyFy movie so of course, you can expect all the low budget quirks that usually accompany a SyFy film. But it certainly doesn’t detract from my enjoyment in this film in any way. In fact, it kind of makes me love it even more. I love being able to chuckle a little when I see a character get knocked out from a blow that it was super obvious that it never even connected with. Or the scene being cut and you suddenly see a stuntman go flying. I love stuff like that. Reminds me of my love for the Power Rangers franchise (yes, I do still watch Power Rangers, don’t judge, we all have our vices).
This is a film about a girl dreaming of an adventure and becoming a hero, she assembles a rag team and they all work together on becoming heroes for their own selfish reasons and it was very enjoyable to watch, but also along the way finding friendship and companionship with each other. Really, its everything I love.

Julia and Alice casting Battle Magic at each other.
I agree the game was great and so was the story, and what truly bothered me about the LGBT representation (romance aside since, as you put it, the lack of it is very likely not the production team's fault), is that the ones that show up are just stereotypes. Specially in a beach encounter, were they basically thrown themselves at the character in a very weird sequence. I know Japan has a different culture, and they probably meant no harm, but this wasn't a great thing for international audiences.
Well like, we also have to recognize Persona has several modes. It’s basically an interactive anime.
Super dramatism/characterization
Parody
This is it. Persona makes fun of a lot of shit. A LOT of shit. Persona makes fun of awkward straight dudes. Personal makes fun of stupid valley girls. Persona makes fun of bad day workers. Persona makes fun of cheesy fortune tellers. Persona makes fun of everything, so when somewhere along the lines, after having 100 ROTFL moments about bad tacky hetero dating experiences, there’s a rando queer one that’s slapstick, despite the series already historically handling LGBT relationships and gender issues with grace when they’re actually being serious and not just throwing dumb comedy moments at is… I don’t see any point whatsoever in choosing to get offended or annoyed over it. That’s just… pff.
Like seriously, are we going to, say, act like Persona has no respect for women because they’ve made fun of the blonde bimbo model type when it’s particularly flagrant, despite having entire dungeons devoted to Rise’s struggles as a performer and feeling degraded as a stripper that didn’t know who she really was? And so on and so forth.
I think one of the biggest problems with the generation younger than me and even part of my own, if that we want absolute sterilization on our content. Only the bestest, purest representations must be at all times. At some point, the fight against “bury your gays” became “a gay character must never be hurt ever, no matter the story it’s in”, and awareness of sensitivities became inability to laugh at our own absurdities, which we used to be able to. The need for LGBT content has had queer comedians get told they don’t have enough queer content anymore and it’s like *looks behind self* I’ve been here the whole time?
Look, I mean, I get it, I do, but when it comes to a series like Persona that’s had active representation, and that actively makes fun of *everything under the sun*, I think our American sensitivities are getting the better of us for a game from Japan that they’re choosing to share with the rest of the world.

Regarding plans for the storytelling and development of Cyrus'es possible endgames
I think people need to stop assuming that a storyline was or wasn't the original idea based purely on their personal preference and little else, because in doing so they are completely ignoring the complexities of story writing and development X what the TPTB allow you to do. In case you're wondering, I'm referring to the seemingly eternal struggle in the Andi Mack fandom between Jyrus stans that claim their ship was the original endgame X Tyrus stans that claim Jyruses are delusional and their ship was meant to be from the very beggining.
If you use this as something you believe is a "winning argument", and start and engage in flame wars over this, let me tell you something that you may haven't considered before: right now, there's a 50/50 chance for each side of the argument to be right. Why do I say that? Beacause we have no idea what Terri Minsky and the AM writers considered doing or not!
Maybe Jyrus was a possibility but they chose to abandon it for a different storyline; maybe they were forced to drop this idea by TPTB at Disney; maybe Jonah was truly never considered as a romantic partner for Cyrus and they really always meant to introduce someone else for him in the form of TJ; maybe at first a love interest wasn't even considered for Cyrus. We don't know!
Honestly, I believe Terri and the writers at the very least considered making Jyrus canon at some point in development. Maybe she considered and discarded this idea before the show even properly began production, maybe it went as far as to be discussed in the writers room and eventually dropped for some reason.
Regardless, saying that it never crossed either Terri or the writers minds sounds like a stretch to me. Even then, that's just my opinion, and even though to me that sounds like the most logical way things potentially went, I also only have a 50/50 chance of being right, just like anyone else when giving an opinion on this topic.
And in case you're from some reason thinking that I might have something against either ship, let me be very clear and say that I have no problem with Jyrus or Tyrus, I think neither is bad and/or toxic, I want Cyrus to be happy and I don't think Tyrus is The Cowards Choice (TCC) or bad in any way, shape or form regardless of whatever if it was or wasn't the idea from the very start. In fact, I believe that Tyrus is a beautiful storyline that's being well developed and is having a very important impact, and it will most likely have even more so as it continues to be developed.
My point with all this is that not to talk about what I ship or don't, or what you ship or don't, it's that we'll have no idea of what was their plan at least until someone that worked on the show and/or had very close contact with Terri Minsky and the writers steps up and talks openly about this, wich is highly unlikely to happen before the show's over.
So let's all stop using the "it was/wasn't the plan from the start!" card, because that one is void of value right now. And unless a reliable source presents itself and give us a definitive answer, that card will be never have any worth in an argument, other than showing where on the AM shipping spectrum you are and starting flame wars.
Thanks! You too!
