You don’t own fanfics. They’re inherently public domain because they aren’t your IP. Agree or disagree with AI, there are no grounds for “protection” from AI because it isn’t your IP to begin with. That’s what you chose when you chose this medium
Oh dear.
Okay, you get an answer, because at least you took the effort to write your ask out properly, even if you are hiding behind the grey, sunglassed circle.
Do I, or any fanfic author for that matter, have any legal claims to our work? No, not really, no. (Although if someone took a fic, filed off the serial number--deleted the fandom specific elements--, and then had it published for financial gain, yeah, that would be a case.)
BUT
Fandoms are built on a social contract that says we respect each others work, the effort people put into their art. We don't steal or disrespect the work of our peers. By feeding people's fanworks to AI you both steal and disprect it, and we need to make people realize that before it's too late--before fandom falls apart, because there will be no more real, actual fanworks.
Disrepectfully,
Orlissa
(i can't believe I have to say this)

really helpful technique ^ once you know how to divide by halves and thirds it makes drawing evenly spaced things in perspective waaay easier:

Not me getting excited because Sail North uploaded another song, no. 😏
I keep seeing people making fun of using growled, hissed, roared, snarled etc in writing and it’s like.
have you never heard someone speak with the gravel in their voice when they get angry? Because that’s what a growl is.
Have you never heard someone sharply whisper something through the thin space of their teeth? Or when your mother sharply told you to stop it in public as a kid when you were acting up/being too loud? Because that’s what a hiss is.
Have you never heard a man get so blackout angry that their voice BOOMS through the house? Because that’s what a roar is.
Have you never seen someone bare their teeth while talking to accentuate their frustration or anger while speaking with a vicious tone? Because that’s what snarling is.
It’s not meant to be a literal animal noise. For the love of god, not every description is literal. I get some people are genuinely confused, but also some of these people are genuinely unimaginative as fuck.
It's frustrating that you can come up with the plot of an entire fic in just a few seconds, but writing it all down can take anywhere from never to forever.
yk what i hate though. is when i find a meme and im like THIS IS SO [cool intimidating mutual i never talk to] I SHOULD SEND IT TO THEM but then i remember ive never talked to them ever and so i cant just like give them a meme out of the blue and so the meme just withers and rots in my camera roll 😔
Mass Effect Headcanons (part 2)
I love seeing all the different fandom takes on chirality in the ME universe, trying to explain in better detail what was probably just a quick bit of handwavy worldbuilding by the devs who didn't look too deep into it (and I definitely don't fault them).
My personal take is that yes, the rest of the galaxy (or at least the species we see in the games) have to care about chirality because it's a matter of health to them. But humans...well, the other species think humans fit the same chirality rules.
But while chirality of our food IRL can occasionally have an impact, it's not as cut-and-dry as the games make it out to be. All our sugars are dextro, for instance. So in-universe, it could just be that the "wrong" chirality food just tastes a bit different, or doesn't give quite the same nutrition (or any; sucralose, or Splenda, is something that we can eat just fine but can't metabolize at all), or maybe on some occasions triggers a reaction. But for the most part, I headcanon that humans can actually get away with eating the "wrong" chirality just fine. Just a bit like vorcha in that regard.
After all, how many things on Earth do we eat that are trying to dissuade us from doing so, or even kill us, and we eat it just fine? Let that be the humans' "special thing" in the ME universe.
I suspect that Shadow's Story is still going to be mostly concurrent with Sonic's. Maybe slightly ahead. I'm thinking he's going to get hijacked first, and then the Time Eater is going to hit the birthday party and Classic Sonic and Tails (timey-wimey stuff, after all), and everything will happen simultaneously. Shadow would just be "fashionably late" to the party (due to being hijacked).
I'm also not expecting to get much in the way of changes to the Sonic-side story.
Who knows, though?
Okay so does the Shadow Story take place before generations? I think it has to because Rouge’s intel for gun was about the Time Eater, which would make no sense for them to want after the fact. Rouge also wants Shadow to go to Sonic’s birthday, which hasn’t happened yet (also LOL that Rouge even cares about that like that but imma let it slide). But then does that mean Shadow breaks his “promise” because he doesn’t actually end up going (you may recall he only shows up in the final cutscene). Are they gonna change Gens story at all to reflect anything that happens in the Shadow Story? Oh goodness
Huh. Realized I never linked this on here. Oops.
As I was working on Awakening, I ended up excising half of the first flashback chapter. I still liked the prose, it's just that it didn't really fit in that chapter. So I decided that I'd make a separate work for the series to showcase any "extra scenes" I wrote, whether deleted scenes from the actual stories, or short vignettes that I wanted to scribble down but didn't fit in any of my outlines. And the first chapter of this work is that deleted portion of that flashback chapter.
Enjoy!
Reblogging to make sure this is visible: the side-blog is live and I have a lot queued up to post once a day. Highly recommend checking it out and sending some love the artists' way!
Hey, anyone who's interested in seeing this: I'm setting up a side-blog to reblog artwork I like.
It's partly to keep from oversaturating this blog with other people's artwork, because there are a lot of pieces I like, but also so that all the art I like is contained in one location and easier to browse through without having to skip past posts on writing or memes or whatever. My own art will still get posted here (and then possibly reblogged to the side-blog if I'm particularly pleased with it).
Fanfic writers are like crows. If you give them treats (comments) they will bring you shiny things (fanfic)

Gentle reminder that your friendly neighborhood turian can curl up in a tiny ball when necessary. They don't have to stand around looking suave and menacing allllll the time.
The devastating difference between how much time it takes to write something vs how fast people read it lol

Gatekeeping fandom is dumb, no matter how you slice it.
Let me start by saying I have been a Sonic fan since I first played Sonic 2 on my uncle's Sega Genesis in 1993.
I love this franchise. I love what Sonic stands for. I love how unapologetically positive so much of the music is. My kids roll their eyes when I quote "together we can overcome all the odds, it's never as hard as it seems" at them.
Do I like every part of this franchise? No. Sonic Heroes is beloved by many but it's my second-least favorite of the games, while I like the werehog gameplay in Unleashed and think Shadow the Hedgehog gave us closure for Shadow's story arc. But I'll still defend other people's right to like the parts I don't, even when I don't understand it. I don't get people who unironically like Sonic 06, but I'm not going to say they aren't a "true Sonic fan." Did someone only just join the fandom because of the movies or Sonic Prime? That's cool. Welcome! Does someone disagree with me as to which games are the most fun to play? That's fine by me! Does someone only want to engage with the comics or the old cartoons? Go for it!
People who think this franchise's reputation needs to be defended are too wrapped up in the criticisms of the 2010s and forget that this franchise has always been a little bit "cringe" and that doesn't need defending. Franchises are in no way definitively "better when they're niche," and railing against "normies and tourists" is the actual cringe behavior.
Also I don't think that person understands what "scientifically proven" actually means. 🙄
"Why do you believe people are pretending to like Sonic"
It's literally scientifically proven that big Youtubers and 2010 mofos is incapable of liking the Sonic Franchise unironically
2. During the 2020s, for unknown reasons, nerdy hobbies like video games, anime, comic books, etc, suddenly became trendy and mainstream for no apparent reason, it makes no sense that the same people who mocked and ignored these things now suddenly want to like it
#you never know when a comment will bring an author back from the darkness beyond
In fact, kind words brought me back to finish a story I'd left hanging for ten years.
Ten. Years.
I wrote eight chapters, and then life got in the way. Marriage, graduation, kids, cross-country moves, probable undiagnosed ADHD (still need to get an assessment). But people would leave a comment on it about once every six months or so, and that would remind me that the story still existed, and was still unfinished.
And eventually, motivation kicked in again, and I had ideas on how to finish it, and I came back and wrote seven more chapters. I finished it.
And then I disappeared for another decade, but at least I didn't leave any stories hanging that time.
And I would be ecstatic to still receive comments on that old story.
thinking about that post of people assuming ao3 has an algorithm and also about how bonkers persistent the view is that ao3 is social media lite. like with startling regularity I get comments saying something along the lines of "it's probably weird to comment on a fic this old--" no it isn't!!!! this is an archive I am literally just assuming you searched for a selection of specific tags or sorted by kudos or looked back on my pseud or any other number of completely normal ways to use an archive site ?? kill the tiktok ghost in your brain and comment on old stuff it's NOT weird

one of my favorite things to do in limited perspective is write sentences about the things someone doesn't do. he doesn't open his eyes. he doesn't reach out. i LOVE sentences like that. if it's describing the narrator, it's a reflection of their desires, something they're holding themselves back from. there's a tension between urge and action. it makes you ask why they wanted or felt compelled to do that, and also why they ultimately didn't. and if it's describing someone else, it tells you about the narrator's expectations. how they perceive that other person or their relationship. what they thought the other person was going to do, or thought the other person should have done, but failed to. negative action sentences are everything.
