I want to write a ANS story, but I’m terrible at humor/banter, and I don’t want to mess up any of the character dynamics. Any tips?
A lot of my general tips for getting better at dialogue take a long time – humor is hard, but you can learn it, and part of that is cultivating an ear for it – but my quick and dirty advice is:
Use drafts.
You don’t need to be smart and funny all at once. I really enjoy banter and humor, but a lot of the time my first draft is a lot of…placeholder humor? Either just a note [Obi makes joke about this thing here] or I take a stab at what I want the banter to look like.
Unless I have a really good idea of what a conversation will sound like, I’m usually editing it down to the wire, changing things around to make it more punchy, or more in-character. But you don’t need to be worrying about this all at once.
