Spain's older population loves to go for walks in the late afternoon and on Sunday mornings. This past sunday, I encountered this pair chatting by the ocean. In Basque. In berets.
The tradition lives on.

My friend Ellen and I took the night train to San Sebastian this weekend to cut costs on hostels. We didn't have much to do when we got in at 6:30, so we walked to the beach to watch the sun rise. We shivered in the morning cold as the city, sky, ocean, and mountains were slowly revealed.

It's impossible to demonstrate with just pictures, but Switzerland is by far the most beautiful place I've ever been.
Matt and I climbed Harder Klum ourselves the next day, sans funicular. We thought we were doing okay, though it was a steep hike, when a 60-some Swiss man ran (yes, ran) past us in a lycra bodysuit. Up the mountain.
Maybe next time.

For the first time during my trip, I was travelling by myself, meaning I did a lot of aimless wandering. I ended up in the biggest park in Madrid, Parque de Buen Retiro, where I sat for hours, enjoying the lively weekend crowd, the dubious street vendors, and the boats floating by on the manmade pond.
I was surprised to witness a warmup for what appeared to be a kayak-waterpolo game right there on the pond. The players scooped and threw the ball with their paddles, shooting it into hoops. I had a limited understanding of the rules after watching, but that doesn't mean I won't go home and try it out anyway!

This is why I want to live in Switzerland someday.

(Béjar, 10/12/11)
This past wednesday was a Spanish holiday, so a few friends and I took the bus to Béjar, a town surrounded by beautiful countryside, intending to hike. We ended up taking more pictures and goofing off than hiking, but the excursion was successful nonetheless.
The sign in the first picture says "Private Property, Entrance is Forbidden," which we clearly ignored in the second.
