Prompt - ‘What do you do when the one who means the most to you is the one who didn't show?’

For months now you’d had your suspicions that Peter wasn’t being honest with you, that he wasn’t being faithful. At first it was easy to ignore, Peter was just late to things but he always had a decent excuse but then he started missing dates, the first few times he’d missed them he had called and apologised profusely but eventually the calls stopped coming, leaving you sat in a diner or stood outside a movie theatre alone. From there you could go days without seeing or hearing from him, despite your best efforts.

You knew but you weren’t ready to admit it to yourself yet.

One last chance, you had told yourself that you’d give him one last chance.

-

Peter made his way over to you as you finished up at your locker, ready to head home after a long school day. He smiled at you, a boyish grin lighting up his face, before he leaned down to kiss your cheek.

The two of you made light conversation as you headed towards the exit, things still tense between the two of you after Peter blew off your last date.

One last chance.

“You’re definitely gonna be at my party, right?” You asked as the two of you came to a stop before you had to separate to get home.

Peter looked down at you, his eyebrows drawing together as he frowned but he shook his head as if shaking away unwanted thoughts.

“Of course I’ll be there, baby.” He told you, promised you. You gave him a dubious look which made him feel even worse. He knew he had been terrible to you lately, he knew he was an idiot but with Spiderman and the workload at school and trying to cover all his injuries so you or May didn’t notice, even with his healing ability, it was hard. It was all becoming too much. He hated keeping it a secret from you, hated lying to you and cancelling on you constantly but he had to do it. He needed to be Spiderman, he needed to help people. “Y/N, I swear I’ll be there. I wouldn’t miss it for the world.” He assured you before leaning down to kiss you softly.

“I promise.” He whispered against your lips and you sighed before nodding.

You went to bed that night praying Peter Parker kept that promise.

-

It was the morning of your birthday and so far everything was going great. Your family had woken you up with gifts and breakfast and there was a flurry of texts and posts wishing you a happy birthday.

Peter had yet to text or call you but it was still early so you figured he was just waiting until he saw you at the party but despite what you told yourself you couldn’t help the worry that started to set in as you were getting ready.

The party was at your house, large enough to host the array of guests that would be coming, and your parents had gone all out on the decorations. Twinkling lights lit the room up nicely, balloons, flowers, streamers and all sorts of other decorations had been set up making the room look amazing.

“You look incredible!” Your friend said as she stepped in with a large group of people from your school. Everyone wished you a happy birthday, handing you cards and gifts that were set upon a table.

As more people flooded into the house, you couldn’t help but glance at your phone repeatedly and yet each time you checked there was no message from Peter.

It wasn’t long before the party was in full swing, music was blasting, people were dancing and laughing as they sang along and yet you weren’t enjoying yourself. You stood off to the side with your eye on the door, waiting for Peter to walk in.

If he burst through the door right now, with that smile of his, you would’ve been so happy. You would have pushed away the fact he was late, that he hadn’t called or texted you, you would’ve just been happy he was there.

“Y/N!,” you turned to face the person who called you, it was Josh, one of the jocks on the basketball team. “Happy Birthday!” He beamed, pulling you into a hug. “How’ve you been?” He asked when he pulled away.

You forced a smile onto your face, trying to pull yourself out of your memories, memories from just the other day when Peter had promised, he’d promised, he would be here. You made friendly conversation with Josh but kept one eye on the door throughout it.

It wasn’t long before you were left alone again and couldn’t help but let your mind wander back to all the times Peter had stood you up. Yet you always told him it was fine, sure you argued about it but at the end of the day you loved him, you didn’t want to lose him.

But now, as you stood alone at your own party, the new dress you’d bought just for the occasion and the red lipstick meant nothing. You had nobody here to impress. The one person who you wanted here most hadn’t bothered to show up, even worse he hadn’t bothered to tell you why.

Looking around the room, everyone else was laughing, they were having a great time and you hated that you weren’t amongst them, laughing along with them as you enjoyed your birthday.

As the hours ticked on, the party showed no signs of dying down despite how much you wanted the night to be over. You just wanted to be alone.

“Hey Y/N,” It was Peter’s friend, Gwen. From the look on her face she knew something was wrong and the sympathy on her face was too much for you.

You felt your eyes fill with tears, watched as Gwen’s eyes softened some more, before you pushed past her and made your way to the toilet. Gwen followed you down the hall and managed to get in the bathroom before you shut the door.

She watched as you clutched the sink like it was your lifeline, she watched as the tears fell down your face and mascara stained your cheeks. She watched her best friend’s girlfriend fall apart because he had messed up again.

Eventually you managed to stop crying and turned to face Gwen. Your makeup was ruined but you didn’t care, it was the last thing you cared about right now. You just wanted everyone to leave.

“He said he’d be here.” You told her hopelessly.

Gwen didn’t say anything, what could she possibly say to you right now? Nothing would make this right and she was furious at Peter. She had known Peter had been blowing you off lately but despite her best efforts she couldn’t get him to tell her why. But there was no excuse good enough to make up for him making you feel like this.

So instead she stayed silent and pulled you in for a hug.

Once you made your way back to the living room the lights dimmed and the many, many guests started to sing Happy Birthday to you. You forced a smile onto your face as you wiped your cheeks, trying to hide what had happened in the bathroom.

You felt Gwen place her hand on the small of your back and blinked away the tears that came as a result.

Once people were done you thanked them, quickly blew out the candles and made to leave.

“What’s wrong?” One of your friends asked as she caught you by the arm, taking note of your ruined makeup and the mascara that hadn't quite been wiped away.

You didn’t say anything, couldn’t say anything. What could you say when the tears started to stream down your face again in front of everyone you knew?

People gave you sympathic looks, more people trying to ask what had happened but you just shook your head.

You didn’t even care that you were crying in front of all these people, none of them mattered to you. The only person that mattered was the one person who didn’t bother to show.

In that moment though, you knew things between you and Peter were done. You knew you couldn’t carry on with this, couldn’t carry on being stood up, being lied to, being ignored. You put so much effort into this relationship and the one time, the one time, you wanted Peter to show up, the one night he knew was important and he didn’t care enough to even text.

That was the moment you knew.

You pushed through the crowd and made your way to your bedroom. You let the door shut with a gentle click before you leaned your back against it, letting your head hit the hard wood.

It was only a moment later that the sob left you and it was followed by more and more until you were sliding down the door, heartbreaking sobs drowned out by the music as you buried your face in your knees.

This, this was the moment you knew things had to be done between you and Peter.

-

You had cried yourself to sleep, still sat on the floor and by the time you woke up the music was turned off and you couldn’t hear any voices. Your eyebrows knitted together as you tried to figure out what had woken you up when you heard your phone buzzing from next to you on the floor.

You looked down and felt an ache in your chest as you saw Peter’s smile beaming up at you, it was your favourite picture of him, half asleep, his hair was a mess but he looked beautiful.

You considered ignoring the call but decided it was best just to rip the band aid off. You’d always thought breaking up with somebody over the phone was weak but right now, in this moment you understand how people did it. The thought of seeing Peter physically hurt.

With a sigh you pressed answered.

“Y/N?” He asked into the phone and you took a shaky breath, trying to calm yourself before speaking.

“What?” You asked, your voice croaky from crying.

You heard Peter let out a deep sigh, the line staying silent for a moment before he spoke.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t make it.” He said and you wished you had the energy to fight him, wished you had the energy to stand up for yourself, to tell him he should be sorry, tell him that you were worth so much more than that. But you couldn’t, you didn’t have the energy to do anything involving Peter Parker. You already knew it was done and there was nothing else to say.

“I’m sorry too,” You said, “I can’t do this anymore, Peter, this is done.” You told him and you heard his breath hitch through the phone.

You couldn’t see the tears pouring down his face as he held a hand to his face. He knew he had messed up, he had every intention of going to your party but then something had happened and Spiderman was needed.

The whole night was a mess.

“Please Y/N,” He said, fully prepared to beg for you right now. He loved you so much and he wasn’t ready to lose you, he couldn’t lose you.

“No Peter,” You whispered, not able to listen to him. It was too late for him to fight for you now, he should have fought to keep you when he had you. “Goodbye.” You said softly before hanging up the phone and letting your head hit the door as more tears fell down your face.

You knew in that moment you’d made the right decision, you couldn’t compete with whatever Peter was hiding from you. You couldn’t be second best to a secret but that didn’t mean it didn’t hurt more than anything, finally letting Peter go.

Prompt - 'You wonder if you'll make it out alive.'

When you first started acting you were the new kid on the block, nobody had ever heard of you and the casting director had taken a chance on you. You were fifteen, new to LA and just getting your name out there. Pretty early on you had been told you’d have to change your name, your actual name being claimed by somebody who was in the industry years ago. So you changed your last name to your middle name and began chasing fortune and fame.

It wasn’t long before you were taking off and the sixteen year old kid you once were was now being thrusted in front of cameras, the cameras flashing in every direction nearly blinded you but it also made it seem real, like you were going to make it. It looked like a dream, the dresses and suits and the people calling your name, it was so surreal.

From there on you were lined up for magazine covers, relishing in the way they transformed you into a sixties queen, curls pinned to your head, red lip and jewels on your neck. It seemed like things could only go up.

Then you missed out on a role for a big movie, one that could really set your career in motion. Another name went up in lights as the other actress thrived in the role, bursting into stardom as the movie became well known, doing amazingly well at box office. You were happy for her, you were, but you couldn’t help but wish it was you.

Another break came and you landed it, now it was your time, your chance for your name to be up in lights, everyone knowing who you were. It was great, it was really great, you felt like you were living the dream, growing up in front of the camera, people greeting you and wanting your autograph…it was great.

However as you got older things seemed to change. You had gotten a role on a show called Criminal Minds, it was well into its production, a couple of series in, and your management and agents felt like this would be a great way to transition you from movies to TV.

It wasn’t something you particularly wanted to do, you liked filming movies but the people surrounding you told you to take it, that you were the lucky one for getting this role.

You relented, figuring it wasn’t worth the fight, knowing it wasn’t a fight you would win. You figured that the show had been properly vetted for your management to consider putting you on it, they had created a public image for you, one that was squeaky clean and you weren’t allowed to do much without them agreeing to it first.

Thankfully you loved the Criminal Minds gig, everyone was so kind and the atmosphere on set was always fun. You were close with pretty much all of the cast but had taken a special liking to Matthew Gray Gubler. When you had first met him he had gone above and beyond to make sure you were comfortable and included, always making sure you were the first to be invited out to dinners and the such.

The two of you got on so well, your personalities coming together in a way that felt like you had known him for years rather than the few months you’d been working on the show.

It was only a matter of time before the older man asked you out. You had said yes without even thinking about it, knowing that you wanted to date him. Most of the time, especially around other actors, it was hard to feel comfortable. You never knew when they were acting or being sincere even if there were no cameras around but with Matthew you just knew. He was always so genuine, so honest that it was easy to trust him from the get go.

Matthew picked you up one night, the two of you dressed nicely for the restaurant Matthew had reserved and then had spent the night walking through Central Park aimlessly, just chatting and getting to know each other.

It was the most wonderful date you could have asked for, with the best company.

You and Matthew continued to date, both deciding to keep it on the downlow. Both of you knew just how much the media could affect a relationship and what the two of you had going was incredible, who could blame you for wanting to keep it private?

But when you're famous, good things can’t last. You shouldn’t have been as surprised as you were to find pictures of you and Matthew posted all over the internet one day, seven or so months into your relationship, but you couldn’t help but feel annoyed.

Sure you were a public figure but seriously?

You definitely weren’t surprised when your management team called you that day, demanding to know why they weren’t informed of this relationship. Didn’t you know how damaging this could be, they had said to you causing you to roll your eyes.

“He’s so much older than you, do you know how this looks?” Somebody from your team snapped down the phone and sure they were right but the age difference had hardly been an issue yet so why should it be now.

You said as much to the man on the phone.

“Y/N, you can’t date him. You’ve come too far to be brought down by this. Haven’t you read the tabloids? The tweets? The names they’re calling you, you’re just a kid, ok, you don’t know any better but we’re going to fix this.” He told you and you just let out a scoff of disbelief because what was there to fix?

Apparently a lot. It started with a fake boyfriend who was more age appropriate and continued with you having to follow him from hotel to hotel as he travelled around the state doing press junkies.

You had called Matthew each night and he tried his best to soothe you but it was frustrating, why couldn’t you date who you wanted instead of some guy who didn’t even know you. Why did your secrets have to end up splashed on the news front page with everyone on Twitter thinking they were entitled to an opinion on how you lived your life.

And still they told you you should be thankful, that you were the lucky one who got to have this life.

But you didn’t feel lucky, you felt confused and angry and alone. You no longer felt pretty in the way you had when you first started acting, you just felt used.

Two months passed and nothing changed, you were still stuck pretending to live a life that wasn’t yours and you weren’t filming so you could hardly see Matthew which hurt and put a strain on both of you.

He had tried to be understanding but after so long, it wasn’t shocking that things came to a halt between you one night and honestly you couldn’t blame him for being frustrated, hell, you were frustrated.

You were currently in the same hotel room as your fake boyfriend who was, thankfully, out for the night.

“Matthew please.” You begged into the phone, tears filling your eyes. You hated this.

“I’m sorry, Y/N/N,” He said, his own voice thick with emotions as he wiped a hand across his face, “I can’t do this anymore. I haven’t been able to see my own girlfriend in months. You’re so worried about what strangers on the internet think about you and you shouldn’t be. At the end of the day you just have to worry about what you think of yourself.”

“Matthew,” You said, unable to say anything else as a sob escaped you.

“I really wish you the best, sweetheart, I do but I’m not what you need right now. I’ll be here for you once you’ve figured things out but until then you have to sort through this yourself.”

That night you cried more than you had in months, letting yourself scroll through Twitter, reading the posts people had tagged you in. You watched as a new actress’ name went up in lights, being praised and welcomed into the spotlight.

You remembered being like that, all them years ago as your family moved to LA for you, as they gave everything up for you to have this life, the life you had so desperately wanted, and now…now you wondered if you’d even make it out alive.

But hey, you were the lucky one right?

Things went from bad to worse and you woke up days after Matthew had broken up with you to see your name plastered all over social media, another actress had been spreading rumours about you and it seemed the internet had taken her side. Overnight you seemed to have become public enemy number one.

Your management had called you several times and when you had finally answered it was to be accused of these rumours by them, by people who’d known you since you were sixteen.

You spent the morning crying alone in a penthouse suite wishing that you could just disappear. Matthew was right, you had become so concerned, your management had made you become so concerned with your public image that you had forgotten who you were.

What happened to that kid who was so excited to get into the industry? What happened to that spark in your eyes that came with standing on red carpets and hugging fans? When had things gotten so bad that you couldn’t even pick who you loved?

That day you decided, then and there, you were done.

You didn’t know how much more you had to give to the world, didn’t know how much of you there was left for them to take but you decided they couldn’t have it. You picked your phone up, finally feeling something you hadn’t felt in a while…determination.

For so long you’d been resigned to go along doing what everyone else said you should do but no longer. You wished you could call Matthew, wished you could thank him for giving you the push you needed but he was right, you needed to do this alone and if, after everything, he was willing to have you then you wouldn’t hesitate to run back into those arms.

-

You didn’t fight back against the rumours, didn’t issue a statement like your management demanded, you didn’t livestream and tell all your followers how upsetting this was for you.

Instead you deleted each and every one of your social media accounts. Within five minutes your phone was blowing up with calls from your management but you let them go unanswered each time. You packed your bags and left the penthouse, hailing a cab and headed to the airport.

Sure you had your New York apartment but it had been a while since you'd been home home and honestly that sounded good right now. After making it big your parents decided to leave LA, telling you that that life wasn’t them. You’d understood that, you knew that and thanked them profusely for giving up so much for you.

Thankfully it was quite easy to catch a plane home and surprisingly easy to do it without any paparazzi but you managed it and pretty soon you were knocking on your parents door and crying into your mothers shoulder but somehow feeling better than you had in a long, long time.

-

It would be a year before anybody saw you in public again, your management called everyday but you had lawyers privately working to get you out of their hooks, refusing to work for them anymore.

Thankfully you had no work commitments planned, only Criminal Minds but the crew were more than understanding of your request to take some time off. You had deleted your public social media accounts but had a private Twitter account and laughed at all the speculations that came out as to how and why and where you had disappeared to.

What was greater is that a few months ago the rumours that turned everyone against you were proved to be false, lies spread to damage your career. You weren’t even mad about it, actually you were rather grateful it had happened to you because it was exactly what you had needed.

Today you were heading home to New York, you had found a place with a bunch of land, it was private so there would be no paparazzi or fans at your door each day, trying to catch a glimpse of your life.

Matthew was back in New York too, finally finished a new season of Criminal Minds and taking a break. Thankfully he had answered when you called, his happiness for you seeping through the phone and you could hear the grin on his face.

You had asked if he wanted to meet up and suggested your new place when he agreed, not quite ready to make you return known to the public just yet, not wanting them to be involved in whatever would happen between you and Matthew.

“Y/N!” Matthew exclaimed as soon as you opened the door to him, not wasting any time in wrapping his arms around you and pulling you into him, a grin firmly in place.

“Hi Matthew!” You giggled into his chest, wrapping your own arms around his waist and gripping him back just as tight.

The two of you didn’t say anything for awhile, content with holding each other after so long apart. Eventually though Matthew pulled away, not going far as he placed his hand on your arm, looking you up and down.

“You look really good.” He told you, sincerity clear in his voice.

You couldn’t help but smile, it was uncontrollable when you were around him even after not seeing him for well over a year.

“I feel good,” you told him whilst nodding and if it were possible his smile widened more.

Honestly he had been rooting for you more than anybody, he wanted you out from under your team but as much as he wanted to believe in you, he also knew they had been in your ear since you were sixteen so there was a good chance you could have continued to let them control your every move.

He was glad you stood up to them and the day he saw you delete your social medias and disappear he knew you were one of the lucky ones who escaped, who weren’t going to be ruled by managements and public expectations.

“Please come in.” You smiled.

“Thank you, I love the new place!” He told you as you led him through the house and into the kitchen where food and drinks were set up.

“Thank you,” you said as the two of you sat down, Matthew sitting in the seat directly next to you, turning so he could face you. “I figured it was still in New York but it’s private enough that I feel comfortable here.”

“I’m glad you got out, Y/N/N.” He smiled, taking your hand in his.

You smiled despite the fact that your eyes filled with tears, you weren’t sad anymore but so much of your life had been wasted worrying about other people...hell you’d lost the one person you loved for over a year because of other people interfering with your life. It was a bad time but you saw it through and now you were free.

“Hey, hey,” Matthew said softly, moving his hand so he could cup your face, thumb gently brushing a stray tear. “I’m so proud of you.”

Those were the words that pushed you over the edge, sobs wracked your body but Matthew held you close, whispering sweet nothings and kissing the top of your head. He let you cry out for all the lost time between you, all the hateful comments and rumours that were spread about you. He let you cry for a life you would never miss and he let you cry for a future you hoped would be better.

“Sorry,” You said with a laugh, moving away to look up at him. He smiled down at you, that happiness reflected in his eyes. “Thank you.”

“You know I meant what I said,” He whispered, “You were brave enough to sort through everything and I’m still here.”

Matthew took your smile as all the permission he needed to lean down and press his lips against yours. It wasn’t rushed, it wasn’t a heavy kiss that made up for lost time, there was plenty of time for those later. No this kiss, it was soft, Matthew’s smooth lips against your slightly chapped ones, it was slow and it conveyed everything you felt for each other in those moments.

Eventually the two of you pulled away, lips red and slightly swollen as you smiled at each other.

“You know, I never got the chance to tell you this before but now seems right,” Matthew began, hand coming up to cup your face and you felt your face heat up, hopeful that he was about to admit the same thing you had wanted to confess all that time ago. “I am so in love with you, even after all this time apart. I actually think this time apart has made me love you more, you’re so strong and I am so unbelievably proud of you.”

You smiled shakily, refusing to cry again though your eyes didn’t seem to get the memo as they filled with tears, but thankfully none fell as you leaned up to kiss the man you loved, the man who loved you.

This kiss was just as soft as the first but somehow more passionate as Matthew cupped your face in his hands, holding you gently.

“I love you too,” You confessed, thankful to say it outloud after all this time, “I was so scared I’d never get to tell you but I love you so much.” You laughed in disbelief that he was here, “I am so thankful that you encouraged me to change everything because without you I’d still be stuck under their thumb, still caring more about what other people thought of me than what I thought of myself. You know my whole career people told me I was the lucky one but it never felt like I was not until now, not until you.” You told him, watching as his face softened as you spoke, watching the pride in his eyes as he listened to you.

“I hated leaving you but I’m so glad you’re free to be you.” Matthew said before kissing you again. “I love you so much.” He whispered against your lips, happy to put all the bad thoughts out of your mind as he did.

It was September 1st, the day you had been dreaming about since finding out you were a witch. As you crossed the barrier taking you to Platform 9 3/4 you couldn’t help but take a step closer to your parents. Yes, you had wanted this day to come for so long but now that it was here it was incredibly daunting.

“You’ll be fine, Y/N.” Your parents assured you, making sure your trunk was where it needed to be. You hugged them tightly before stepping onto the train, face going pale as you saw all the other students.

You walked further onto the train, trying to find an empty compartment but it seemed like an impossible task.

“Hello,” a voice said, startling you. Was he talking to you? “Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you.” Definitely talking to you then.

You turned around, coming face to face with a boy. He was taller than you and had messy jet black curls, perched on his nose was a pair of glasses and he looked at you with warm, brown eyes.

“Would you like to sit with us?” He asked, holding the compartment door open for you. The boy smiled as he watched relief fill your features, a friendly smile spreading across his face.

“If you and your friends don’t mind?” You said, gesturing to the two other boys sitting next to each other.

“Of course not, please come in.” The boy said.

“Thank you.” You replied, shuffling past them and taking a seat opposite the boy with short brown hair.

“I’m James by the way, James Potter and these are Sirius Black,” Here the boy turned his attention to you as he shot you a grin, his bright grey eyes capturing your attention. You smiled back at him, giving him a small wave which made his smile grow wider. “And this is Remus Lupin.” The other boy gave you a shy smile.

“It’s nice to meet you all, I’m Y/F/N Y/L/N. Thank you for letting me sit with you.” You said, smiling at each of them, before turning to James.

“You’re welcome. You’re not from a wizarding family, are you?” James asked, causing you to laugh softly.

“Is it that obvious?” You asked back, causing James and Sirius to chuckle.

“Kind of but it’s ok. Hogwarts is great…” James began before him and Sirius began filling you in on what you needed to know about Hogwarts and the wizarding world.

As the train got closer to Hogwarts you found yourself relaxing into your seat, laughing along with the boys. When the food trolley rolled around James and Sirius bought enough food and sweets to last at least a week or two causing you to giggle before you all tucked in.

You find yourself gravitating to James on the journey there, something about him made you feel at ease, he made you feel like you could be brave.

“You said something about the houses earlier,” you began, fiddling with a card from the chocolate frog, still amazed at the moving portrait that could leave the frame, “what house are you all hoping for?”

Sirius’ face darkened for a moment before it shifted into a smirk, “I’m hoping for Gryfindor, that’ll really please Mother.”

James laughed but you weren’t sure why but shrugged it off for now.

“Most of my family is from Gryffindor so I’m hoping for that too.” James told you as he turned to face you.

Conversation flowed easily between the four of you and you hoped that they would still talk to you when you were sorted.

As the train pulled up and first years were led away from the other students, you felt your nerves beginning to grow again. Your stomach felt sick as anxiety began to fester. James, who had made sure you didn’t get lost in the flow of students, saw you looking pale and gave you a small smile before squeezing your hand in his.

“You’ll be fine,” He assured you as the boats took you across the lake, the sight of the castle only adding to your fear. “I’ll be with you the whole time.” He promised and you forced a smile onto your face before squeezing his hand back.

“Thank you.” You managed to whisper, causing him to smile.

It wasn’t long before you were walking down the length of the Great Hall, the deafening silence did little to calm your nerves. James walked behind you, in between glances of the hall his gaze drifted back to you, him smiling sympathetically as he saw the tenseness in your shoulders.

Name after name was called, your peers each walked up to a stool. Some looked as nervous, if not more nervous than you felt, whereas some others strode up and sat confidently on the chair, waiting for the enchanted hat to be put upon their heads.

You watched as James was called up, he looked confident, not flinching as the ancient hat was put on top of his head. You stared up with wide eyes as the hat needed barely any time to decide. It shouted ‘Gryffindor’ causing James to grin. He made his way over to the table, sliding into a free space opposite Sirius.

After what felt like an eternity your name was finally called.

“Y/LN, Y/F/N.”

You didn’t move, nerves had you frozen in place and it wasn’t until you felt a hand brush against yours that you jolted. You turned to look at who touched you, seeing Remus there with a soft, encouraging smile. You forced yourself to smile back shakily before your feet began moving.

You perched yourself on the edge of the stool, eyes darting around the Great Hall before the view was obscured by the old hat.

“Hmm, interesting, very interesting,” The hat sat causing you to jump, “A good mind, resourceful, you have the ability to be fairly cunning Miss Y/L/N. But more than that is a great deal of bravery,” it said and you barely managed to suppress a snort, a great deal of bravery it had said, you weren’t feeling very brave right now. “No, no, not now but in time. You’ll be fiercely protective of those you consider family, you’ve got a good amount of courage, daring too, quite the risk taker. I know, I know,” the hat said for only you to hear before it bellowed out into the silence of the Great Hall, “better be…Gryffindor!”

Professor McGonagall lifted the hat from your head and your eyes immediately sought out the two boys you’d met on the train. You couldn’t help but smile as you saw they were clapping loudly, letting out happy cheers as you made your way over to them, taking a seat next to James.

“Told you you’d be fine.” He murmured as he grinned over at you. Despite the nerves you’d been feeling all day long, you couldn’t help but return the grin, feeling more relaxed now that you were sorted.

It wasn’t long before everyone else was sorted into their house, the boys and you all beaming at each other as Remus was placed in your house. The feast was unlike anything you’d ever seen before and now that your nerves had calmed down you were able to enjoy the magical happenings around you, from the magically appearing food to the floating candles to the ghosts that popped out of nowhere.

You ate more food than you could handle and giggled along with the boys. As the evening came to a close with the headmaster rising from his seat, you glanced at James who was already looking at you. You couldn’t help but smile softly at him and James didn’t hesitate to return it.

“First years, follow me.” The Gryffindor prefect said.

You all stood and made your way out of the Hall, your head turning in every direction. Portraits and paintings littered the walls, all of the people within them moved freely from one frame to the other. You were so captivated by them you hadn’t noticed the group turning a corner.

James glanced back and smiled over at you as he turned around and made his way over to you.

“Come along, Y/L/N.” He said, causing you to jump slightly before turning to face him. You glanced around seeing you had lost track of the prefect leading you to the common room and flushed slightly.

James just laughed and took your hand in his before leading you in the direction you were supposed to be heading.

That night as you lay in bed, feeling alone in the girls dorm, you couldn’t quite get the sight of James’ brown eyes, the messy curls and soft smile out of your head and you couldn’t wait to get to know him better.

-

“Seriously, Potter?” You yelled as you stomped down the stairs leading into the common room.

Nobody looked up at your shout, all too used to the antics from you and the boys. The four of you were closer than anything and despite being the only girl in the group that didn’t exclude you from their pranks and today was no exception.

“Hello Y/N, I must say, I love the pink hair.” James said as he looked up at you, a grin spreading across his face that he couldn’t fight back if he tried.

Watching as you glared at him only made him smile wider.

“You know I’m going to get you back for this, Potter.” You said, as you picked up a pillow on the couch and hit him with it before flopping down next to him.

“Yes, yes, I’ll be waiting anxiously for your comeback.” He laughed, causing you to hit him again before hugging the pillow to your chest and turning to face him.

“You’re such a jerk.” You told him. The smile on your face showing how much you didn’t mean the statement made him laugh again.

“Ah, good thing I’m your favourite then, isn’t it?” Here he turned his head, his cheek resting against the couch, as he looked at you with puppy dog eyes and an over exaggerated pout.

“Hmm, I suppose you are.” You replied with a roll of your eyes.

It had been four years since you’d first met James, you and him had grown closer and closer each day before you were inseparable. Since day one James had taken a shine to you, making sure you were ok, if people tried to pick on you, purebloods from Slytherin had taken a liking to you too, James was quick to put them in their place both at the age of eleven and fourteen.

“McGonagall is going to kill us when she sees this hair.” You told James.

“Us?” He shot back, raising an eyebrow at you. “You’re the only one with pink hair here, Y/N/N.” He smirked.

“Oh come on,” you groaned and when you raised the pillow again he held his hands up in surrender, “Who else is going to spike my shampoo with hair dye?”

“You made an excellent point, Y/L/N.” James laughed, reaching over to take a strand of dyed hair in between his fingers, twirling it around.

“I hate potions.” You groaned, leaning closer to James who smiled sympathetically at you. It was no secret you were hopeless with anything potions related, thankfully you were able to be paired with James who seemed to thrive in every single class. You didn’t feel bad about letting him take over the practical side of the class as you focused on note taking.

James had tried to teach you where he could but he had had one too many cauldrons blow up in his face.

“I know you do.” He said softly, moving his hand from your hair so he could wrap his arm around your shoulder. You happily shifted closer.

It wasn’t long before Sirius and Remus came down the stairs and after more laughing about your hair the four of you headed down to the dungeons for potions.

Slughorn’s voice began to grate on you. He had never been your favourite teacher but today you just were not in the mood for him. James watched you glare at him as he ran through the properties of Weedosoros and chuckled softly to himself.

“Who teaches teenagers how to brew poison?” He heard you mutter to yourself, “Great idea professor, maybe I’ll get really good at potions and have you try my Weedosoros.” Here James couldn’t help but snort, causing you to turn and face him.

“If you get good at potions, I run naked through the Great Hall.” He whispered, causing you to smirk.

“Well I wouldn’t strip out of that robe just yet.” You laughed quietly, nothing in the world could make you good at potions.

As Slughorn continued to speak James found himself growing bored too, even though he didn’t mind potions class, double potions first thing in the morning wasn’t ideal. You and him sat in the back row, closest to the door, and James looked to Slughorn, who was focused on the board, unaware of the blank stares and the one or two students who were sleeping, before looking back at you.

“C’mon.” James whispered, nudging your arm. You raised an eyebrow as he picked his bag up and gestured for you to do the same.

“Ready?” James mouthed, taking a final glance at Slughorn who had yet to turn around.

“Ready.” You replied despite not knowing what was happening. James gestured to the door and took your hand in his. Counting down from three, he pulled you from your chair and the two of you managed to escape the room, Slughorn none the wiser.

“Where are we going?” You giggled as James dragged you down the hallway, the two of you running past the shouting portraits.

“You’ll see.” James said and when the two of you finally stopped, you more so out of breath than James who played quidditch any chance he could get, you raised an eyebrow at him.

“What?” He said, “We missed breakfast.” You laughed as he tickled the pear, watching as it transformed into a green door handle.

The house elves were more than happy to have visitors, pushing more food than either of you could carry into your hands and as you bid them goodbye both your bags were considerably heavier than they had been only moments ago.

“What’s your plan now, Potter? We’ve still got an hour and a half before we’re supposed to be out of class.” James didn’t reply instead he slipped his arm around your shoulder and pulled you against him before leading the way to the entrance hall.

From there you were taken down to the Great Lake. James sat down on the grass before pulling at your hand and gesturing for you to sit too. The lake looked beautiful, it stretched as far as your eyes could see, hills and mountains on either side.

James and you sat together in a comfortable silence, food spread out between the two of you. The sound of waves crashing together in the distance could be heard, the air was slightly chilly but bearable.

It didn’t take either of you long to finish eating, plenty of food left over thanks to the generosity of the house elves. James shifted so his legs were spread out in front of him and he rummaged through his bag, pulling out a yellowing book, the spine was cracked and the cover was worn.

You moved to lay down, resting your head on his lap as he opened the book, you heard the sound of pages being flipped as you looked up at the sky, squinting up at the clouds drifting pass.

You let your eyes fall closed as the sound of James’ voice filled the silence, his tone soft and low and you couldn’t help but smile as you listened to him. As he got further into the book you let your eyes open slowly, lazily gazing up at the sky before turning to face James.

There was something about the peacefulness of the lake, the soft and quiet sounds of waves crashing, birds chirping, creatures rustling leaves in the woods and the soothing voice of James that made you feel inexplicably happy. Out here, just you and James, it was…easy. The two of you were yourselves out here.

You shook your head, wondering where on earth that thought had come from. You looked away from James before he could catch you staring and instead focused on the sound of his voice.

-

One day it was like something clicked into place for you. That morning you had woken up, it was Valentine’s Day so the entire castle had been decked in pink for the week and your little group had been surrounded by girls desperately trying to get the boys attention.

You’d lost track of how many times they had been asked out but each time a girl approached James you felt something twist inside you. You couldn’t explain why these girls asking James out had bothered you so much, you were in your sixth year of Hogwarts and James was an attractive man, it wasn’t like James had never been asked out before.

So why did it bother you now?

The question had plagued you for weeks and this morning when you woke up, the first thing on your mind was those warm brown eyes, those mess of curls and a soft smile that made you feel safe. That’s when it hit you.

You liked James Potter.

You liked James Potter a whole lot, despite already being attached at the hip you wanted to spend all your time with him, despite knowing so much about him you wanted to get to know him even better, despite the fact that he was your best friend you wanted him to be more.

As you lay in bed that morning, refusing to get out of bed, never being more thankful that it was a weekend, you thought back to when you had met James. Since that moment he said hello to you and held the door of the compartment open for you, you realise now, looking back that’s when everything started. James had smiled at you and you’d never left his side since.

You realised that as you looked into his eyes, nowhere else felt more like home. When you saw him smile, you couldn’t help but mirror it back no matter how bad you were feeling. When things got too much for either of you and you snuck down to the lake, staying there until everything was better.

You liked James Potter.

Just thinking about it made your stomach fill with butterflies. It was the beautiful kind of butterflies, the ones that had you blushing just thinking about him. The kind that made you want to find James and confess everything, the kind that made you feel how James made you feel…giddy.

You liked James Potter.

It was like that thought had changed everything.

When you finally pulled yourself out of bed and headed down the stairs you were greeted to James’ smirk.

“What time do you call this?” He laughed, gesturing to the seat next to him.

Everything felt different, you hardly knew how to act around James now.

You laughed, though it was slightly forced, and took the seat next to him on the couch. His eyebrows knitted together at the distance you’d put between the two of you but he quickly solved it by pulling you against him, his arm wrapping around your shoulder.

Conversation quickly turned back to whatever they’d been talking about before you showed up but you were more content to lay against James, his fingers tracing random patterns on your arm causing you to smile softly.

“You ok?” He whispered into your ear when Sirius and Remus were more focused on their conversation.

You hesitated for a moment, shifting so you could lean up and look at him. He was beautiful, the fire reflected in his brown eyes, giving them a red tinge and you thought that you could get lost in them given the chance.

You shook your head slightly in an attempt to clear your thoughts before you smiled up at James.

“I’m good.” You told him, the look he gave you showed he wasn’t convinced but he let it go.

“What are your plans, Y/N?” Sirius asked, causing you to look away from James.

“Plans?” You asked in confusion, watching as Sirius laughed whilst rolling his eyes.

“Keep up, Y/L/N.” He groaned, making you laugh. You missed the look James was giving you as he watched you laugh against him but Sirius and Remus caught it and shared a look between themselves. “Plans for Valentine’s Day.”

“You asking me out, Black?” You smirked.

“I’m afraid our love shall have to wait another day,” Sirius told you dramatically, “for I have a date with the beautiful Amelia.”

“Good luck with that,” You said, honestly surprised that Amelia had agreed to a date. “As for me, I shall be here, awaiting your return.” You said, causing them to laugh.

“Come on, you have to have a date!” Sirius exclaimed, frowning as you shook your head.

“I was asked but…” Here you trailed off, not knowing how to end the sentence. At first you hadn’t had a reason for rejecting the offers you had received, most of them were fairly decent looking guys but you hadn’t felt anything more than annoyance as they asked you.

Now though, after this morning's revelations you knew exactly why you had turned them down because despite how good looking they were…they weren’t James Potter.

“I’ll keep you company.” James said, causing you to look up at him again.

“You don’t have a date?” You asked, watching as he shook his head. “Well if the captain of the quidditch team can’t get a date, is there hope for the rest of us?” You groaned, watching as James laughed.

“I’d rather hang out with you than with anyone that asked me out.” And that was a statement, wasn’t it? You had seen some of the girls asking James out, they were stunningly beautiful and probably wouldn’t make a cauldron explode in his face and yet here he was saying he’d rather have your company.

What were you supposed to think about that?

“I’d rather hang out with you too.” You told him quietly, it was the closest you were going to get to confessing your feelings but for now it would have to be enough.

“Where are we going?” You asked later on that evening. Most students were in Hogsmeade on dates and you were ready to spend a night with James in the common room when he had entered, raising an eyebrow at your comfy attire before telling you to change.

“You’ll see.” He said and it wasn’t long before he was pulling you along down the old, familiar trail that led to your spot by the late.

As you rounded the corner to your spot you stopped in your tracks, letting out a gasp as you took in the scene. Small tea candles floated in the air, giving the darkness of the night a soft, orange glow. A blanket had been laid down on the grass, slightly larger candles rested upon it, adding to the atmosphere. There was a basket and two glasses placed on the blanket too.

You turned to look at James who looked nervously at you. You were left speechless and he couldn’t tell if it was a good sign or not but when your lips stretched into a grin, he let out the breath he had been holding and grinned back at you.

“What is all this?” You asked softly, the warm glow of candles made you want to maintain the peaceful atmosphere created.

James shifted before clearing his throat. He looked down at his feet before looking you in the eyes.

“I like you, Y/N.” He confessed and felt a huge weight fall from his shoulders, no matter how this went, at least you’d know how he felt. “I really like you and I hate that it took me this long to realise it. I should have realised it all those years ago, Merlin’s beard, Y/N/N, I should have realised it the moment we said hello. When I held that door open for you I should have known then that one day you could be mine and I would be yours, no matter how you felt. All I’ve been able to think about for weeks, months, is you. You’re beautiful Y/E/C eyes, that smile that has never once not made me smile back. Merlin, please tell me there’s something here and that this isn’t all just in my mind.” James said, rushing through his speech like he’d been rehearsing it for a while.

You were beaming at him by the time he had finished, cheeks flushed red and not because of the cold. God, how foolish you both were.

“I like you too, James. When I realised I liked you I was terrified because I thought everything would change for the worse and I didn’t even let myself consider the possibility that you would like me back, that everything had changed for good.” You told him, watching as he gave you the softest smile you’d ever seen on his face.

“I like you so much, Y/N, and I want to make up for all that time we lost being idiots who didn’t realise. I already know plenty about you but I want to know everything about you.” James said as he stepped forward, he reached up cupping your cheek in his hands and despite the cold air, your cheek were warm to touch, making him smile wider.

He gave you time to pull away but you didn’t move, not until his lips were against you. You kissed him back, the kiss started off soft and slow but all the time you’d spent not admitting your feelings had built up causing the kiss to turn. It was hot and messy and the two of you only pulled away when a sudden coldness washed over you.

The pair of you looked up, laughing at the rain that came from nowhere. It was the kind of rain that meant you were drenched through in a matter of seconds, hair and clothes sticking uncomfortably to you pretty quickly.

But that didn’t matter as you and James laughed before he pulled you in for another kiss, this time his arms snaked around your waist and you rested yours around his neck, fingers coming up to play with wet hair.

The two of you stayed outside for way longer than you should have but when you finally pulled away James rested his forehead against yours.

“Sorry we didn’t get to eat.” He said, watching as you glanced over at the soaking wet blanket and the basket.

“That’s ok,” you giggled before brushing your lips against him, “we’re going to be so sick tomorrow.”

“We should head back.” James smiled, entwining his fingers with yours.

You glanced down at your joined hands before looking up at James who, despite being drenched through, looked incredibly handsome and he was looking at you like you were the most beautiful girl in the world despite the fact that you had mascara running down your cheeks and you were equally as wet.

Everything has changed, you thought to yourself, and the next day as you and James cuddled together on the couch both suffering from a cold, you couldn’t help but smile because everything has changed but it was the best type of change.

Prompt - 'I've been loving you for quite some time’

You sat on Peter’s bed, frustration clear on your face as you listened to Peter plead his case. You and Peter had been together for a good few months now and this was your first real fight, sure you bickered and argued sometimes but you never fought, not like this.

“I said I was sorry!” Peter exclaimed, feelings just as frustrated as you, if not more so. He hated that he had let you down, he had known how important it was for him to show up at the event your parents had been hosting earlier that night and he was on his way over, really he was, but then he saw a rush of police cars and the sound of gunshots and only minutes later Spiderman was swinging into action.

“One night, that’s all I asked for.” You yelled back, standing from the bed and making your way towards the door. This wasn’t the first time Peter had left you hanging but usually you got a phone call and it wasn’t so important.

“Why can’t you just accept the fact that something came up?!” You couldn’t help but scoff at that, anger coursing through your veins as you turned to face him. Your phone had left your hand before you could even register it, flying over to Peter who skillfully caught it.

“I’m sorry, ok?” Peter said again, softer this time. He saw the tears in your eyes, from sadness or anger, or both, he didn’t know but he felt terrible for making you cry even if you refused to let them fall.

“I’ll see you tomorrow.” You told him, suddenly drained.

“No, come on, please stay,” He pleaded with you, eyes turning wide as he did, “It’s too late for you to be walking home tonight.”

He was right, it was well past midnight and it was only now that you gave thought to Aunt May who you knew was home as she was the one to let you in. You grimmanced as you thought of her hearing everything between you and Peter.

“I really don’t want to be around you right now.” You said whilst shaking your head and moved to pull the door open.

Peter frowned as he moved in front of you, blocking the exit off.

“Stay in here, I’ll take the sofa.” Peter insisted and the two of you went back and forth for a while until you finally rolled your eyes and agreed to take his room.

As you lay alone in your boyfriend's bed you couldn’t help but frown as you cuddled into his pillow. You knew you were being silly, Peter wouldn’t miss tonight unless it was important but the fact he hadn’t given you a straight answer annoyed you more than him not showing up.

The next morning you felt just as bad as you had last night. You hated leaving things like that with Peter, you hated not resolving the fight and you hated that you had both gone to bed angry and alone.

You couldn’t say just how long you lay in Peter’s bed, waiting for the man himself to come into his own room. You heard voices drifting up the stairs and knew both him and Aunt May were up.

So you had to make the first move then.

You weren’t quite ready to go down to Peter so instead grabbed your phone and pulled up your texts.

‘You know,’ you started it, wanting to keep the message light, ‘i read somewhere that you should never leave a fight unresolved.’

There, that was enough to let him know you were ok with him coming up, let him know that you wanted to talk.

You heard a crash from downstairs and raised an eyebrow, the sound of somebody rummaging through a closet or something made you sit up.

It wasn’t long before Peter’s door opened and you couldn’t stop the laughter from leaving you as he walked in wearing a football helmet that had seen better days, clearly it was a good few years old.

Peter grinned as he heard you laugh, glad to have eased the situation somewhat. He really was sorry for not showing up but sometimes with Spiderman it just couldn’t be helped.

Sometimes he did wonder if it would just be easier if you knew but then he thought of all the risks that came with you knowing and backed out, pushing any thoughts of you and Spiderman together out of his mind.

“Alright,” he said, grin widening as he listened to you giggle, “let’s talk.”

You patted the bed next to you, cheeks flushed from laughter and a smile firmly in place.

Peter was good at that, making you laugh and smile no matter the situation. You were glad for it, especially now after your first fight. You didn’t want things to be weird, you just wanted to talk and get it out of the way before going back to normal.

“Take that damn helmet off,” You laughed, causing Peter to roll his eyes jokingly but he did as you requested.

“I only wanted the truth.” You said softly after a moment of silence. You were both sitting side to side and you let your head hit the wall before turning to face him. Peter did the same, his smile turning sad as he did.

The truth? The truth was that Spiderman was needed, Spiderman was always going to be needed and he loved to help, he never wanted to give up Spiderman but he also didn’t ever want to lose you.

So, what was the truth?

“You saw that police chase last night, right?” He asked, watching as your smile fell and a concerned expression took over your face.

He knew now wasn’t the time but he couldn’t help but think of how adorable you looked, eyes filled with concern, eyebrows drawn together as you gently bit your lip.

He reached up, gently pulling your lip away from your teeth before letting his hand drop.

“Yeah I saw it, two guys broke out of prison and started shooting the streets up.” You said, voice so soft it was barely above a whisper as you put the pieces together. “You were there?”

“I got caught up in it.” He said, feeling incredibly guilty for lying to you. It was lie after lie with him and now he had you looking over at him with so much concern written across your face that it made him turn away from you, disgusted with himself.

Maybe if he told you the truth he could keep you and Spiderman separate, he’d done it so far. All he had to do was never interact with you as Spiderman unless absolutely necessary.

“Pete,” you gasped, leaning over to grab his hand in yours, “I’m so sorry, why didn’t you just tell me that? Are you ok?”

Peter couldn’t handle the guilt, his stomach twisting and it was then he made his mind up. He just hoped he was making the right decision because if something happened to you he’d never forgive himself.

“Y/N, I’m sorry, I’m so so sorry, I can’t do this anymore. You’re the best thing to happen to me and I just keep lying to you,” He told you with watery eyes as he pulled his hands from yours. You were so confused but before you could speak he started talking again, “no more, no more lies, I promise.”

“Peter, what are you talking about?” You asked, utterly lost as to where this conversation was going.

“I need to tell you something and if you don’t want to be with me anymore I understand but I need you to know.” He said, turning and resting on his knees as he gave you his full attention. “I was caught up in that police chase last night but not in the way you think. I was there and I was helping the police.” Here he watched as your eyebrows furrowed further together as you took in the information but hadn’t made the connection yet.

“Y/N, I’m Spiderman.” He confessed.

The silence spread for minutes, Peter not prompting a response from you but desperately needing one. You continued to stare at him in shock, replaying all the times you’d seen Spiderman on the news, joining dangerous situations and shooting of quick remarks as he took down the latest bad guy.

Spiderman was Peter, your Peter.

“Please say something.” He finally said, so softly but in the quiet of the room it wasn’t hard to miss.

“I love you.” You said, watching as Peter’s eyes widened.

A confession like that was honestly the last thing Peter expected to hear leave your lips. He expected you to be furious with him, for being Spiderman or for keeping it a secret, or both. He expected you to hate him, to not want to risk being around him. He expected you to walk out of that door and to never speak to him again, only catching glances of you as you passed each other in the hallways or as he sat behind you in class.

“What?” He managed to get out, utterly confused.

You let out a breathy laugh of disbelief. Whilst ‘I love you’ was the last thing Peter expected to hear, him telling you he was Spiderman was the last thing you thought he would ever say.

“I love you,” You repeated, eyes filling with tears as you cupped his jaw in your hand, Peter leaning into the touch without hesitation, “I love how selfless you are, I love that you care so much about people that you're willing to risk your own life to help them. I love how much hope and joy you inspire and trust me you inspire people to believe, not just as Spiderman but as you, Peter Parker. I love that you think it’s funny when I’m mad,” You laughed, gesturing to the abandoned football helmet, “you’re just, you’re so amazing and I love you so much Peter.”

Peter couldn’t help himself as he leaned forward. He connected your lips together in a soft but passionate kiss, the kiss communicating just how much the two of you loved each other, how much you cared for each other. The two of you clung to each other, not planning on letting go ever.

“I love you too,” He whispered, resting his forehead on yours as he looked at you with a stupidly large grin on his face. You couldn’t help but mirror the expression. “I have for quite some time.” He told you, causing you to giggle softly as you brought him in for another gentle kiss.
