“Reg, come on!”

“James, I said no.” Regulus snapped back at James, who was persistently following him through corridors.

“Reg, please!”

Regulus whipped around and James skidded to a halt in front of him. “James.”

James, the idiot that he was, grinned stupidly down at Regulus. “Reggie.”

“I said no.”

“Oh, come on, please, just one date!” James pleaded, eyebrows furrowed together and hands clasped together. Regulus imagined James in that same position but on his knees in front of him. He shook the thought away quickly though with a shiver.

Regulus raised an eyebrow at him.

“Reg, just one date so I can show you what an amazing boyfriend I would be!”

He merely stared back at James.

James pursed his lips before blurting out, “Come on, we’re meant to be, Reg, I can feel it in my core! Deep, deep down I can feel it!”

Regulus looked over James. He looked kind of adorable like that, with his eyes blazing, brows furrowed, and chest slightly heaving. “I think you’re being a tad dramatic,” Regulus scoffed, rolling his eyes.

James put his hand on his chest in mock surprise. “Dramatic is my middle name, Regulus, what can I say?”

Regulus looked James up and down again before turning away from James and gritting out, “You know what? Fine. I’ll… go on a date with you.”

He heard James gasp and before James could start screaming, he cut in with, “But, don’t get all dramatic about it, yeah?” Regulus turned to face James again. “I want this to be just ours, not the whole school’s,” he murmured, “can you do that?”

James’ face softened. “Of course, anything for you, love.”

july 20: response | @jegulus-microfic | word count: 242

Regulus walked out of the coffee shop with not only a coffee, but a handsome bloke's phone number and a small smile quirking his lips up.

The barista— named James— had taken the initiative to write his number on Regulus’ cup and to add a note that read:

Text me later if you wanna go out.

-James

p.s. My shift ends at 5pm ;)

When Regulus arrived back at his flat, he sat at his desk and merely stared at his coffee cup.

What if the number was fake?

What if James was teasing him?

What if—

Regulus shook his head to shake his ‘what ifs’ into the back of his mind. Without thinking he grabbed his phone, punched in James’ number, and sent the first message:

Hey, it’s Regulus from the coffee shop.

Regulus internally screamed for the whole five minutes where there wasn’t a response, until:

Hey! This is James but you knew that already :D

Regulus typed and re-typed his reply 5 times before he settled on:

So, what did you have in mind?

For what?

You said you wanted to take me out somewhere?

OH. LOL rightttt xD

So..?

My shift ends at 5 so I can swing round yours and maybe we can have dinner at this restaurant near my flat?

That sounds great

See ya then gorgeous ;D

Regulus turned off his phone and threw it.

He had a date to get ready for.

Oh god.

july 19: island | @jegulus-microfic | word count: 135

“James!”

“I’m serious, Reg!”

“We are not going hiking for our honeymoon! I don’t understand how you find that relaxing!”

“Well, what did you have in mind then, love?” James asked Regulus, giving him a peck on the cheek.

“I was thinking an island. With pretty sunsets and water so clear you can see everything,” Regulus murmured as James swayed slowly with him. “We can go to the beach, relax, and maybe have a little fun there…” Regulus’ fingers played with James’ hair.

James hummed. That did sound way better than hiking.

“And we can get a room right in front of the beach so we’ll have a view,” Regulus added quietly.

James pressed his smile into Regulus’ cheek and whispered, “You’re the only the view I need, love.”

“James.”

“An island sounds wonderful, Reg.”

july 18: fake | @jegulus-microfic | word count: 278

“You’re not real. You can’t be,” he whispered as the man he loved stroked the side of his face.

“I’m here, I’m here and I’m real and I love you so much, darling.”

Regulus screwed his eyes shut before the tears could fall. “No. You’re fake. It’s fake, it’s fake, it’s f—“

“I’m here, you can feel me, I’m real, it’s not fake, please, Regulus, just look at me,” the other man pleaded quietly, thumbs swiping gently at tears on Regulus’ cheeks.

Regulus opened his eyes and stared at him through the haziness of tears.

And there he was. James. With his tanned skin and dark curls. Eyes so focused on Regulus that one might have thought that he was the only thing James had ever seen in his life.

Regulus clutched at James’ arms, straining to find a way to get closer. To see he’s really here.

“It’s just me, love. Please, breathe. You’ve known me for 9 years, we’ve been dating for 5 months,” James reassured him. “None of this is fake.”

“It has to be!” Regulus burst out with a heaving sob. “I’m not lucky enough to actually have you in my life. I-It can’t be real. I’m not that lucky!”

“Reg…”

Regulus wrenched out another sob and crumpled into James’ chest.

“You’re too good for me… I don’t— I can’t deserve this… Please… Don’t leave me, Jamie…”

“I’ll never leave you, darling. You deserve the world, please don’t ever tell yourself otherwise.”

Regulus felt a kiss on the top of his head as he sobbed, curling into James’ embrace.

“I love you, Regulus. I’m here.”

“I love you too, Jamie. Thank you for staying.”

july 17: fee | @jegulus-microfic | word count: 406

Regulus was aware that he was going about 20 over the speed limit. But he was so, so late for his meeting. He didn’t care that he was being a tad reckless. He had to get to that meeting.

When Regulus saw the flashing lights and siren in his rearview mirror, he cursed as he slowed and pulled over. He felt like he might cry. He’s never gotten pulled over before.

He heard the door of the cop’s car shut and he shakily pressed the button to roll his window down. The cop took the hat he was wearing off his head when he reached Regulus’ door, and Regulus really wished he had kept the hat on. Because underneath the hat was probably the most handsome man Regulus had ever seen. Perfectly tanned skin, dazzling grin, piercing eyes, and a mess up dark curls on his head.

“So,” the cop started, “you know why I pulled you over?”

Regulus nodded, probably too eagerly and managed to choke out, “I was, ah, speeding.”

The cop put his hands on his hips. “Indeed you were, love.” A smile was pulling on his lips. “Before I write a ticket, I’ll need to see your license and registration.”

Regulus dug in his glove compartment and handed over his papers and license. “Is this going to take long? I have a very important meeting to get to,” Regulus pleaded.

The cop laughed, pulling out a notepad and pen, and Regulus’ heart did a flop in his chest. “Writing the ticket right now, love, don’t worry about that meeting.”

He handed back Regulus’ papers, fingers brushing slightly. Regulus was ashamed that the small touch had sent lightning bolts up his arm. Regulus quickly stashed the paperwork away, and turned quickly back to the cop.

The cop tore a piece of paper off his notepad, folded it, and handed it to Regulus, brushing their fingers again. “Make sure to watch your speed in the future, love.” The cop winked. “I’m James by the way.” And with that, the cop retreated back to his car.

Regulus put his window back up and slowly unfolded the paper, expecting a hefty fee.

He blinked. There wasn’t a fine written in the paper. Just a phone number and a note that read:

Let me take you somewhere fancy.

And don’t speed.

Call me- James

p.s. Charming your officers out of a ticket doesn’t work every time, love.

july 15: accept | @jegulus-microfic | word count: 215

Regulus truly believed he was the greatest actor to exist.

Whenever he was home, he’d slip into the character that Walburga and Orion punished into perfection. Pretending to respect them was the only to protect himself from getting punished.

Whenever he was at Hogwarts, he’d slip into the character of the cold, cruel Prince of Slytherin. He’d pretend to not care about a thing in the world. He was sure that was the only reason his friends stuck with him.

Whenever he was around his brother, he had to slip into a character that didn’t want to just collapse in his big brother’s arms.

The only time when Regulus had been free was when he laid in his bed at night and imagined a world where he could be himself.

That was until James came along.

James was the first person to ever accept Regulus as he truly was. Regulus could cry and scream and laugh and grin and just feel when he was with James.

Around James, Regulus felt so incredibly loved that he wanted to cry. With every touch and word, James made him feel like he was made of pure sunshine. With every kiss and lingering look, he felt like he was finally at home.

Around James, Regulus never had to act.

july 13: owl | @jegulus-microfic | word count: 283

“-and you can tell James that if he wants to be on speaking terms again, he’ll have to stop leaving his dirty shirts all over the house!” Regulus snapped at Remus, who rolled his eyes.

Remus shuffled to the other side of the living room to relay Regulus’ message to James. After a couple seconds, Remus came shuffling back.

“James said you guys could talk when you stop going to bed late.”

“We can talk when he stops setting his alarms for 4 in the morning!” Regulus huffed.

Remus went to James, then came back with his lips pursed. “James says to remind you that you like it when he goes on morning runs.”

Regulus pinched the bridge of his nose. James got him there. Regulus did like to see him in a tight tank top. Perfect morning view if you asked him. He let out a groan of frustration. “Well, tell him—“

“Yeah, you know what?” Remus interrupted sharply, speaking loud enough for both Regulus and James to hear him, “I’m not doing this anymore. I’m not an owl. You lot can figure this out on your own.” Remus gathered his things and left out of the front door of James and Regulus’ flat.

Regulus looked across at James who was smirking.

James’ smirk turned into a loving grin. “Come here, love,” James opened his arms and Regulus went to him, “Can we make up now?”

“Yeah,” Regulus whispered. “And, for the record, I don’t mind when you go on morning runs, darling.”

James pressed a kiss to his forehead. “Yeah, you’ve made it obvious, Reg.”

Regulus laughed then pouted up at his boyfriend. “But, seriously, James, please pick up your shirts.”

*LAST PART in surgeon x patient au*

previous part, part one

James was embarrassed. So embarrassed. He had walked into Regulus' room without knocking. Again. He wore his cockiest grin and his confidence oozed off of him in waves. He planned to make a move today. Yet, when he sauntered into Regulus' room, the first thing he saw was another man sitting in his lap, cradling his face. Then, the 4 faces of 4 people in the room turned to look at him all at once. James' eyes were drawn to Regulus though.

James felt his face pale. His eyes snapped to where he saw Regulus' hands resting on the other man's arms. The other man was still holding his face. James could have screamed just then. But, thankfully, he didn't.

James couldn't believe it. Because of course Regulus already had a partner. James hadn't even asked before he started flirting with him. He was a little taken aback from how much seeing this other man affected him. I mean, nothing had happened between him and Regulus yet. They'd just flirted a little. That, however, did not stop James' heart from plummeting straight to his feet. He probably should have expected it though. Regulus was attractive. But, James always went into things with little to no plans, and that almost alwaysended with him getting burnt.

"Woah," the other man on Regulus' lap exclaimed, turning around fully to face James, "who's the Adonis that just walked through the door?" The other man smirked and bit his lip playfully. James looked at him, and instantly hated him a little bit for being decently handsome. James then instantly hated himself for hating the other man.

"Alright, that's enough out of you," said another man, with a mess of blonde hair and dark, slightly sun kissed skin. "Get up off your arse, dollface," he purred to the other man, who was now scrambling off of Regulus.

The other man shoved Regulus' face back his hand and barked out a laugh when Regulus promptly shoved him off. "Ugh, Barty, seriously?" Regulus groaned.

Barty. That was the other man's name. Barty. Huh.

James came to quickly when he realized that he ought to introduced himself to Regulus' visitors. He flashed a polite smile to the other visitor, who hadn't spoken. She was quietly standing by Regulus, and she was holding one of his hands gently, clutching her purse in her free hand. James cleared his throat and spoke, "Hello, I'm Regulus' doctor. Dr Potter, but you can just call me James." He smiled at them all.

The woman holding Regulus' hand was the first to respond. "Hi, James," she replied kindly, smiling back at him. She had the same dark skin and blonde curls as the other blonde man, except she had her hair woven in braids. She extended a hand toward James, which he met halfway. "I'm Pandora."

"Oh, and I'm Barty!" Barty also put his hand out for James to shake, reaching over the bed. As soon as James clasped his hand around Barty's to shake it, Barty blurted, "I'm the best friend." Barty grinned. "He's mine." Barty's eyes glinted madly, and for a second, though James would never admit to it, he felt scared. He let go of Barty's hand.

"Barty." James looked at Regulus when he heard his sharp voice. Regulus wasn't even paying attention to James. He was caught up in swatting Barty with the back of his hand. "Mate, you've got to stop acting like my crazy, possessive ex."

"Reggie! We've been over this! That is exactly-"

"Love." The blonde man spoke up, glancing down at Barty, who was shorter than him by a few inches.

"Alright, alright, I can take a hint," Barty scoffed and rolled his eyes. His face visibly softened, though, when the blonde man put an arm around him.

The blonde man nodded to James politely. "And I'm Evan."

James grinned at them all. Despite the fact that Barty was absolutely bonkers and the fact that Regulus liked that and was dating him, James thought that the 4 of them looked like a little family.

He cleared his throat. "Um, actually, the reason I've swung by is that I've got to start getting Regulus prepped for surgery. You all can say a quick goodbye, but then, our nurse, Dorcas, can show you to the lobby. The surgery is only about 2 hours, but the anesthesia will take a while to wear off. I recommend coming back tomorrow morning as most patients are pretty out of it after being on pain meds and anesthesia and all that stuff," James explained simply.

As soon as James was finished, Barty swooped forward and hugged Regulus. He was sure there was no way Regulus was breathing in an embrace that tight but the look of annoyance of his face was priceless. "Don't die!" Barty stood up again. "I'll have no one to torment! But seriously, Reggie, you are not allowed to die." Barty's eyes started tearing up and he sucked in a harsh breath.

"Good Lord," Evan mumbled under his breath, enveloping Barty in his arms. "See ya, Reg," he said in a normal tone, leaving the room, bag in hand, holding up a now sobbing Barty.

"Bye, Baguette," Pandora cooed in her airy voice, kissing Regulus' forehead, then leaving.

James quirked up an eyebrow at Regulus when the door shut. "Baguette?"

Regulus groaned. James felt a tingle in his stomach at the sound. He internally chided himself. No, bad, James, bad.

"She calls me Baguette and calls my brother Croissant because we're French," Regulus explained, rolling his eyes. He wore a smile on his lips though. Regulus shifted his ocean grey eyes to James and scooted over in his bed to make room for him to sit.

James gulped and shook his head hastily. Cleared his throat. "Ah, no, thank you," he mumbled. "Reg, I wanted to apologize for flirting with you. It was unprofessional of me and I didn't realize you were already involved-"

"I'm sorry, what?" Regulus snapped. "What do you mean 'already involved'?"

"I-uh-Barty isn't your..?" James trailed off, then chided himself again. This time it was for not finishing his own sentences.

"No," Regulus said, lips pursed. "He's my ex, but he's also my best friend. And he's very touchy and lovey dovey. Evan is his boyfriend."  After a moment of horrifying silence, Regulus blurted, "I think they're going to get married soon."

James couldn't bring himself to respond. He felt a million times more embarrassed now for some unknown reason.

Before he could string together another apology, Regulus' hand darted out and dragged James down to sit on the bed next to him. Regulus stared right into James eyes, a million emotions swimming through their murky depths. Then, with no warning whatsoever, Regulus cupped James' cheek and pecked him on the lips.

James' eyes closed and he brought a hand to Regulus' back. His lips were so, so soft. His hand was warm and held James' face with so much care he could melt on the spot. He leaned in, expecting more, and when he was met with nothing, he opened his eyes. Regulus stared back at him, a centimeter away. Regulus had pulled back from him faster than he had rushed forward to him.

Regulus' face flushed madly and he turned away from James.

"Get me ready for my surgery, James."

"Okay, love."

Regulus turned back to face James. This time, James was the one bringing his hand up to cup the other man's face.

James anticipated what Regulus was going to say and before the words left his mouth, James murmured softly, "Don't worry, everything's going to be just fine, love. I'll make sure of it."

previous part, part one

Regulus stirred slightly in his sleep. Yesterday had been an emotionally taxing day. What with him discovering he fancied his own doctor and then said doctor flirting right back at him. So, of course Regulus was a bit tired. After James had finished giving Regulus a rundown of everything to expect from getting surgery, he stuck around for another hour, claiming that if anyone needed him, they could just page him. After spending more time with James, Regulus realized that underneath James' outer layer of charisma, was a dumb, funny, sweet, and overall annoying man. Regulus couldn’t help but be intrigued.

Regulus stirred again in his sleep. His eyes slowly fluttered open and he yelped when he saw a face staring down at him.

“Barty!” Regulus cried, jumping back as his friend grinned in his face. “I thought I told you to stop waking me up like that!”

“Hello, past lover,” Barty crooned, clutching Regulus’ face tightly and smacking a dramatic smooch on his forehead.

Regulus groaned, a small smile on his lips. He glanced to the side and made eye contact with Evan. “Mate, how many times have I told you to put a leash on him?” he asked as Evan peeled Barty off Regulus and deposited him in a chair on the side.

Barty smirked evilly up at Evan. “He has.” He bit his lip, eyes dark.

Evan snorted, smirking back down at Barty.

“Christ, Barty, you’re in public,” Pandora chimed in from where she was standing on the opposite side of Regulus’ bed. “Hey, Reg,” she purred, giving him a quick hug.

“How has my favorite past lover been feeling?” Barty sat his head on his fist.

Regulus rolled his eyes.

Barty shot up from his chair at the sound of his friend’s silence. “You’re not all of a sudden dying now, are you?”

Regulus raised an eyebrow at his best friend.

“Oh, Reggie, tell me you haven’t sprouted angel wings and plan on flying to heaven!” Barty wailed, jumping into Regulus’ lap.

“Barty.”

The other man looked up from where he had been hugging Regulus’ waist and smiled at him mischievously. Regulus couldn’t help but grin back and respond with a deadpanned, “Oh, yes, actually, I’ve already died and I am a ghost.”

“Reg, but seriously, how are you?” Pandora asked quietly.

“The painkillers they gave me have got the pain down to almost nothing,” he shrugged. He didn’t feel anything, just a twinge every now and then. The power of the medicine honestly impressed him more than anything. He squeezed Pandora’s hand reassuringly to let her know he really was okay.

Barty snapped his fingers in his face to get his attention. “Dollface, you think you might be able to slide me some of whatever they’ve got you on?” Barty quirked an eyebrow up then scowled when Evan hit him on the shoulder.

“No,” Evan reprimanded. “You’ve just gone clean 2 weeks ago.” His eyebrows were furrowed together. “Please, love, you’re doing so good this time,” Evan pleaded, face gone softer.

Barty’s face also softened. “I know,” he murmured, “was just trying to poke a little fun at our boy all hopped up on the hospital’s meds.” Barty pouted innocently at his boyfriend. “I didn’t mean it, Ev.”

Evan nodded stiffly, gripped Barty’s shoulder affectionately, then turned to dig in the bag he had thrown over his own shoulder. “Regulus, I’ve brought you that book we were texting about yesterday,” he said handing him a book with a smooth black cover.

Barty, still sitting in Regulus’ lap, snatched the book first and flipped to the cover page inside. “Ooh, If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio,” he read aloud. He gingerly set the book on Regulus’ nightstand. He moved his hands to Regulus’ cheeks and patted them while saying, “I admire you, babycakes, I wouldn’t have the patience to put up with a single—“

He got cut off by James Potter entering the room. All heads turned in sync to look at James questioningly. Meanwhile, James blushed a deep shade of red, some form alarm and chagrin flashing in his eyes. Regulus couldn’t possibly figure out what reason James would have to be chagrined in this moment though.

“Woah, who’s the Adonis that just walked through the door?” Barty exclaimed from where he was still in Regulus’ lap and clutching at Regulus’ face.

*surgeon x patient au*

previous part, part one

When James had stepped into Regulus' room he hadn't been ready at all. Regulus had been avidly texting Evan and wasn't prepared at all for James of all people to just saunter in his room. He hadn't even knocked. As a result, Regulus jumped with a start, clutching his chest. He relaxed, but only slightly, when he saw it was James who had interrupted his gossip session with Evan. Regulus hastily turned his phone off, mentally willing Evan not to blow up his notifications while he was busy talking to James. Evan had a habit for freaking out if Regulus didn't respond within 10 seconds. Quite similar to how Barty would freak out if Regulus didn't show him enough love.

A package deal from the beginning, Evan and Barty were Regulus' best friends, annoying as they may be in their own, unique ways each. Evan and Barty had been dating for a solid 3 years, although those 3 years had more than a few break ups and get-back-togethers. Regulus was pretty sure though that despite their overdramatic tendencies, Evan and Barty really did love each other. Pandora and Regulus even had a bet going for who would propose first.

Regulus raised an eyebrow at James. "Obviously no one's ever taught you to knock?" He rolled his eyes, fighting the tiny smile that was threatening to dawn on his lips. "You scared me like a boggart, James."

James didn't respond to Regulus' quips, he simply went to stand at the foot of his bed, wearing another one of his stupid, dazzling grins. He fluttered his eyelashes just slightly, and Regulus hated that his heart did a flutter at the same time. "You paged?" James asked, voice coated in honey.

Regulus stiffened just slightly, making a desperate, last-ditch attempt to fix his into something neutral. "Y-Yes." Regulus internally screamed at himself for his stutter. "I've decided I want the surgery."

"That's all you paged me for? Just to tell me that?"

"Yes." Regulus swallowed. For some reason, he wanted nothing more than to drag James closer. But he also wished for James to just leave. Regulus was annoyed with himself and was afraid he might take that out on James. "You can leave now."

James laughed and Regulus could've choked on the sound. "Actually, I have to stay and give you information about getting the surgery," he replied, coming around to sit next to Regulus on his bed. Regulus moved over instinctively without even thinking about what he was doing. He felt his face flush when James' leg brushed against his own.

"Well, get on with it then," Regulus answered stiffly.

"The surgery is called Open Reduction and Internal Fixation. In the surgery I'll be setting the bone fractures with some screws. We'll be doing this as soon as possible to try to prevent any further injuries," James told him.

Regulus nodded. He wasn't really listening due to the... distraction right in front of him.

"After the surgery though, it could take anyway from 3 months to a year for you to recover," James continued, "your knee is gonna hurt, be swollen, and stiff. You might need a brace for it, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there, love. You'll be needing some physical therapy and you won't be able to drive for about 6 weeks."

Regulus absentmindedly nodded again. He hadn't caught a single word.

"Oh, and you'll also be needing a pair of crutches," James added. He poked the tip of Regulus' nose, drawing him back to the present and out of yet another fantasy, where he may or may not have a starring role. "You still with me, Reg?"

Regulus blinked. "Um, yes." Blinked again. "Don't call me that."

"Okay, Reggie," James smiled again when the other boy scowled. "Now, I've got to tell you about the possible complications."

Regulus nodded. It might not hurt to try to focus this time.

Previous part, part one

James smiled to himself softly, replaying the day's events in his mind like a movie. He was convinced that this was definitely the best day of his life. James has, of course, had many great days, such as his 21st birthday, and the day he graduated med school. He might be overexcited about this all, but he was sure that this day ranked on the list for best days ever. Oh yes. Yes, yes, yes.

"Potter."

James' head snapped up at McGonagalls' sharp voice. "Yes, Minnie?"

"Are you done daydreaming or will be getting your work done today?" She raised an eyebrow skeptically.

If he was honest, James had forgotten where he had been. He took snuck a glance of his surroundings and saw he was sitting at a computer with an article on knee bones and joints opened. "Minnie," he scoffed jokingly, "of course I'm getting my work done." He raised his hands innocently. "Just doing a little research, that's all. Plus, I've finished my charts already," James grinned at her.

"Alright, Potter but to let you know, your darn pager's been going off for a while now, it might be important," McGonagall told him curtly, leaving the little room afterward.

Sighing, James lazily picked up his pager then jumped to his feet when he saw the room.

Regulus.

James' breathed out in relief that it wasn't a 911 page, nevertheless, he still had a snippet of worry tugging at the back of his mind. However, despite his worries, James was ecstatic. Regulus wanted to see him. Regulus wanted to see him. James smirked. His plan had worked.

After Dorcas told him that Regulus liked him, James decided to play the card he knew always worked: playing hard to get. And, oh, was it working.

James was so pleased with himself that he made the grand decision to beatbox as he sauntered to Regulus' room. He bobbed his head to the tune he was making up as he entered the lift. He turned, back to the still open doors, and scanned the papers on the tiny bulletin board in there.

"James!"

James whipped around at the sound of his name to see Sirius standing behind him, hands on his hips. The doors to lift were closed and Sirius had already punched in the floor number he was traveling to.

"Christ, Sirius, you scared me!" James blurted out with a chuckle.

"Well, I wanted to have a word with you, actually," Sirius said, smiling, though his eyes told a different story. He took a step towards James. "Dorcas told me." Sirius' eyes flashed dangerously.

James heart seemed to do some sort of backflip inside his chest. "Uh, t-told you, um, what, exactly?" James choked out, scratching his head nonchalantly and suddenly becoming very interested in the bulletin board again.

Sirius sidestepped and stood in front of James face. James had to look down at him because he was a few inches shorter than he was. If he was honest, Sirius looked hilarious like that, glaring up at James through his curly black bangs with the rest of his long hair tied up in a knot on his head.

"She told me you've been making lovey-eyes at my little brother!"

"I-"

Sirius fully just put his hand on James' face to stop him from talking. "Mate," he started, "I know that us Black brothers are very, very pretty, but when you're operating on my brother, please try not to focus on our dashing family genes and focus on the surgery at hand and do your job as a doctor." Sirius grinned. "I'd tell you you're picking wrong brother, and I'd tell you that out of the two of us, I'm the one with the magically delicious looks, but, frankly, I'm quite taken with your friend, Remus," Sirius waggled his eyebrows.

"You're not mad?" James ventured as soon as the shorter man slid his hand off of his face.

"As long as you don't hurt him in any way, shape, or form."

"Are you, like, giving me permission to snog your brother?"

"Hey!" Sirius gasped dramatically, hand on his chest. "You are talking about my brother! I do notwant to hear whatever nasty plans you have for him!" Sirius placed his other hand on James' chest and gave him a tiny shove.

James laughed and copied the eyebrow waggle Sirius did.

"And the eyebrow thing is mine!" Sirius moved his hands to press his palms on James' eyebrows and pushed his head back playfully, laughing while he did so.

For the rest of the ride, Sirius and James continued to play around and joke with each other. When the lift doors opened, they stepped out in sync and glanced at each other, before bursting out laughing again.

Sirius made his face solemn. "James, this lift ride has been nothing but utterly life-changing, and, now, I'm afraid I've no choice but to bestow upon you the greatest title of my best friend." He gripped his shoulders.

James settled his face and responded with equal seriousness, "And I guess I've no choice but to accept." He shrugged with a frown, then couldn't hold his grin for a second longer.

"Well, best friend, I have got to rush my arse down to the operating room, so, how about we arrange for some drinks later after you get my number from Remus?"

After that last remark, Sirius took off in a skip to a different hallway. James made a mental note to himself to later ask Remus for apparently his new best friend's phone number. James liked Sirius. He was funny. James liked that. Actually, scratch that. Sirius was hilarious. Even though Sirius seemed to have a habit for invading other's personal space, James really didn't mind. He found it somewhat endearing.

James slowed to a stop in front of Regulus' door when he reached it, deciding to click his heels on the ground for a dramatic flair. James could be a diva when he wanted to be as well. Before entering, he slapped on his most dazzling, practiced smile that always got onlookers swooning and he ran a hand through his hair quickly.

His plan: continue playing hard to get.

previous part, part one

As soon as James had left, Regulus had wanted him there again, but he was sure James had tons of real work to do. In all fairness though, Regulus did need to talk to James about his surgery. Regulus had decided by now that he did want the surgery, and not just as an excuse to spend more time around James. Frankly, his knee was constantly in a low, throbbing pain even though Dorcas had given him some painkillers. It had been getting annoying. Plus, Regulus figured it couldn't hurt anyway since his brother was a doctor and therefore, Regulus had good medical insurance, so money wouldn't be an issue here.

Regulus' train of thought was interrupted by Dorcas coming into his room with a light knock. "Hey, babes," she cooed, plopping herself down next to Regulus on his bed, "I've got today's astrology horoscope, thought I might share." He scooted over to make more room for her and she curled into his side, taking out a magazine.

Dorcas flipped it open and began rambling to Regulus about all the ways she was supposedly going to be lucky that day, according to her star sign.  Then, she opened the magazine to a new page and started telling Regulus about the ways he'd be lucky that day.

"Wait, but how'd you know my birthday?" He asked her, interrupting her warnings to him about things he was supposed to avoid that day.

Dorcas laughed. "I may or may not have looked at your chart," she remarked with a smirk.

"Well, I sure hope you looked at my chart, you're the nurse on my case," Regulus retorted with a chuckle.

"Oh, and Regulus, look," Dorcas added, tapping her finger on the page, "it says here that you'll be lucky in love, today." She smirked at him again. "Or, perhaps, have you already gotten lucky in love today?"

"Dorcas, I've not even known you for a day," he snorted.

"Hardly means I can't be interested in what you've got going on with one of the hottest guys in the hospital."

"I thought you said you liked girls though?"

"My love, some things are just universally agreed upon, and James Potter is one of those."

Regulus couldn't argue with that so, he remained mostly silent and gave her a vague mumble to show he agreed.

"So? Tell me what happened after I left!" Dorcas demanded, punching him playfully in the arm.

"Well, he came in, saying all this BS that he needed to check my heart beat," Regulus started, "then, he took out his little heart-listening-tool thing and stood a million times closer than normal. But, like, no complaints from me. Then, he was all like 'good news is you're fine, bad news is I can't snog you'. By that point he was less than an inch away, but then the git had the gall to just cut it quits there and leave. So, that's what he did!" Regulus finished his story with an exasperated flourish of his hands, dropping them in his lap after.

Dorcas opened her mouth, clearly about to ramble again, when Regulus' phone began vibrating from where it sat on the bedside table. He picked it up, groaned inwardly when he saw the name on the screen, and answered.

"Barty, mate, what is it?"

"What, I'm not allowed to check in on my best friend while he's in the hospital? When Evan had to go to the hospital for his broken ankle, I called him every couple hours. And he never complained, not once!"

"Barty, Evan's your boyfriend, of course he didn't complain!"

"Just because we're not lovers anymore doesn't mean you have to stop showing me the LOVE, Reg. Where's all that LOVE you showed me when we were together? The love we had when we were still f-"

"Barty."

"Right, right. Anyways- Evan, me, and Pandora are thinking of coming round the hospital to be with you before and after the big surgery."

Regulus rolled his eyes.

"Well, if Evan and Panda don't decide to show up, I know I'M coming, because I'M an amazing best friend. Well, apparently not, according to the lack of love you're showing currently."

Regulus rolled his eyes again.

"HEY. I can feel you rolling your eyes. Because only a best friend would be able to tell and I just so happen to be-"

"Okay, yes, Barty, I love you, the love is here, this is me showing you the love," Regulus stated flatly. "Is that all? I was a bit in the middle of something."

"Oh, in the middle of something? Who have you charmed into thinking you're normal again? They better not be trying for the best friend slot, Reg. I don't know if I've made it clear, mate, but as your best friend, I kind of care about you and wouldn't like to see some other idiot kick you around. Call me a crazy, possessive ex, but hey, that's exactly what-"

"Barty, mate, love and care aside, please shut up."

"Alright, alright, I get it. I'll leave. I can take a hint. I can tell when someone doesn't love me anymore-"

Regulus hung up on Barty and sighed, putting his phone back on the bedside table. "Sorry, Dorcas," he mumbled.

previous part, part one

Regulus couldn't believe himself. He was so embarrassed he could... he could... he could- he was so embarrassed he didn't even know what he could do. He groaned and dropped his head on top of his knees, which were still folded into his chest. Regulus could not believe Dorcas would betray him like that and tell James, of all people, at he fancies him. He groaned again in frustration.

"Love, you okay?"

Regulus jolted and snapped his head up, cheeks flushing madly at the sound of James' voice. And there he was, standing at the foot of Regulus' bed, biting his lips nervously. Regulus latched his gaze to James' lips. He really shouldn't find that as attractive as he did. Regulus nodded slowly, feeling the redness in his face calm down.

"So," James began.

"No," Regulus interrupted, refusing to talk about what just happened.

"Love, I was gonna say that I need to check what your heart rate is," James smiled and Regulus was chagrined all over again. Regulus scowled as James came up to him and whipped out a stethoscope from thin air, seemingly.

James instructed Regulus to sit on the side of the bed, and, of course, Regulus did what James told him to. James leaned in close to Regulus, put the stethoscope on, and began listening to his heart. If you asked Regulus though, James was definitely closer than a doctor would need to be to check a heart rate. Regulus wasn't complaining though.

James moved his hands, and the stethoscope, obviously, lower on Regulus' torso. James was staring up at Regulus with half-lidded eyes and Regulus could feel lightning coursing through his whole body at this point.

"Stand up for me, love," James murmured. Regulus stood up obediently. "Turn around." He felt a smirk growing on his face before James grumbled, "Oh shut up, I can feel you smiling, and you know that's not what I meant."

Regulus laughed as James listened to his heart beat from his back for some reason. Regulus didn't understand anything related to anything medical. When Sirius was still in medical school, all Regulus would hear about is the one million and one ways Sirius could fix him if he ever got hurt or sick. Regulus retained none of the information but was endeared that Sirius had promised to fix him up whenever he got hurt. Obviously, Sirius had not and did not fix him anytime he was hurt, but the sentiment was enough for Regulus.

"Love, turn around again, please," James asked softly. And Regulus did. James gave him a lovely, lopsided grin. "Well," he started, "the good news is your heart is okay and really healthy and so are your lungs, though a little raspy." James reached out and tucked a loose curl behind Regulus' ear.

Regulus scrunched his eyebrows together and he searched James' face with confusion. "What's the bad news, then?"

"The bad news is according to this hospital I'm not allowed to snog you senseless," James murmured, his gaze traveling down Regulus' face to rest on the smile that Regulus now had on his lips. James leaned in until Regulus could feel his hot breath on his face. Regulus' smile turned into a smirk as he glared into James' eyes. "That's too bad," James added pulling away from Regulus.

Regulus blinked.  Why was James pulling away? Regulus furrowed his eyebrows again.

James slid a pager into Regulus’ hand. He clutched his hand and brought it up to his lips softly. He cleared his throat, dropped Regulus’ hand, and strode to the door.

“I’ll see you later, love, page me if you need,” James flicked his gaze up and down, “anything.” He finished and strode out of the room, closing the door swiftly, leaving Regulus stunned.

previous part, part one

James sprinted down the halls, terrified out of his mind. Literally what in the world could have happened??? Regulus was perfectly fine except for a fractured knee so, why did James get a 911 page from his room? James’ brain repeatedly came up with one awful scenario after the other as he tore down the halls and rounded corners. He told off his idiot brain for being ridiculous but he was still scared and didn’t slow down.

He turned a corner and smacked directly into Lily, sending them both tumbling to the ground in a tangle of arms and feet. Oh shitttt, he did not have time for this.

“Woah, hey, Potter,” Lily exclaimed, “slow down there!” She let out an airy laugh and she picked herself and dusted off her scrubs. “Oh, I was meaning to ask, wanna meet me in the on-call rooms later?” Lily smirked suggestively, helping James up.

James’ heart and stomach dropped to his feet again. He was wasting time. “Er— yeah, uh, I’ll have to turn that offer down, Lily,” he gritted out, “I’ve really got to get going— 911 page.” James avoided her eyes and set off again.

“You must really care about this patient if you’re blowing me off this quickly,” he heard Lily chuckle as he sped away.

As soon as he got to Regulus’ door, he threw it open to find absolutely nothinghappening inside. He saw Dorcas, the nurse for this case, sitting in a chair, shoulders shaking with laughter. James head snapped to look at Regulus as he made his way over to inspect him.

Regulus was sitting on his bed, hugging his knees to his chest, his face a notably paler shade than James remembered it to be. His face was stricken and his gaze seemed to be latched to James since he had entered the room.

“Regulus, love, what’s wrong? I got a 911 page,” James said, eyes switching to give Dorcas a questioning glare at the end. She burst into another fit of giggles at James look.

“It’s—um— it’s my heart,” Regulus mumbled, immediately shifting his pretty eyes away from James. James didn’t even have a chance to take out his stethoscope before he got interrupted.

Dorcas stood up and wiped tears away from her eyes. “James,” she started, “a word. In private.” She took him out to the hallway, closed the door, and leaned in close to him. “Alright, so a minute ago our star patient in there paged me complaining of weird feelings in his chest,” Dorcas began, “He seemed pretty spooked by it, so I checked him out and his heart was beating a little quickly, but it was probably because he was freaking out so much.” Dorcas breathed out an airy laugh before continuing, “And, uh, well, I saw his face when you were with him before…”

James didn’t understand. “So…?”

“Oh, love, he fancies you!” Dorcas burst out. “Babes, he was thinking of you and his heart was doing little flutters,” Dorcas said, a little more quietly. James cheeks flushed bright red and his ears felt hot.

“Wait—uh—I—sorry, what?” James choked out incredulously. James’ heart soared but his head spun in disbelief. Regulus Black fancied him??

“Love, you’re an absolute catch,” Dorcas giggled, patting James on the shoulder as he reeled back to lean on the wall, “You made me question if I actually liked girls or not, that’s how powerful you are.” Dorcas laughed and, instinctively, James also laughed but it was tinged with unease.

“Wait, so is Regulus like… aware that he… you know…?” James asked.

“Well, I told him flat out, I was like ‘Babe, seriously, you fancy him’ and then he just pulled his knees up and sat there in the fetal position while I paged you,” Dorcas explained with a smile on her lips.

“Yes, okay, I get that this is a big deal, like, I’m soaring here, Dorcas, but a 911 page?? Was it necessary? I thought he was dying and I literally ran over Lily to get here,” James argued light-heartedly.

Dorcas flipped her braids over her shoulder. “What can I say, Potter? You’re here now, so go snog him senseless.” She grinned and walked away, leaving James dumbfounded.

James blinked hard a couple times and then it all set in with a jolt.

Regulus Black fancied him.

Regulus fancied him.

Regulus fancied him.

Regulus fancied him.

But, he was his patient. The hospital had extremely strict rules about intermingling with patients. Oh fuckkkk.

This was going to be such a complex mess.

Oh, but it’d be so fun.

*surgeon x patient au* previous part, part one

James strode through the hallways of the hospital clutching Remus’ unfinished charts in one hand, the other resting on his pager on his hip. James came to a stop in front of the on-call room and inhaled deeply. He pressed an ear to the door to try to see if anything was… happening in there. James didn’t hear anything so he felt it was probably safe enough to go in. He swung the door open and made a beeline for where he saw a tangle of limbs under a blanket.

“Hey, Lupin.” James dropped the charts right on top of Remus, and let out a chuckle when he heard small grumbles omit from under the blanket.

Remus’ head popped out from underneath and with it the disheveled head of Sirius Black.

Sirius’ eyes bulged and he blushed wildly.

“James’, mate, what are you on, like, seriously? I told you I’d be busy,” Remus muttered angrily, running a hand through his hair and fixing a glare on him.

“Mate, you left behind all your charts with me and, I’m not going to do them, I’ve got enough paperwork to do already. Plus, the hospital board lawyers’ll have your head if you keep slacking off,” James said flatly. “Oh, hey, Sirius,” he added with a little wave to the other man, who looked a little terrified right now.

Remus turned to Sirius and James heard him murmur, “Love, it’s fine, James isn’t going to tell the whole hospital about us.” Sirius almost instantly relaxed and threw on a lopsided grin, holding out a hand for James to shake. James took it and smiled back.

Suddenly, James remembered something. “Black, you’ve got a brother, right?”

“Yeah,” Sirius responded.

“Well, he’s admitted here right now, and I’m his doctor, thought you should probably know or something,” James explained.

“Oh,” he waved his hand carelessly, “I forced that little git here. Put up such a fight.” He laughed fondly. “He slipped on a pool deck then fell in and almost drowned, honestly, it was quite hilarious at first, until he started screaming and thrashing around,” Sirius told James, voice more serious now, “So, like the amazing older brother that I am, I jumped in and dragged his arse out. Then, I forced him to come here because his knee was looking pretty rough.”

James nodded and said, “Yeah, his X-Rays showed a couple of fractures so I’m planning on doing an ORIF. That’s an open reduction and internal fixation surgery.” Sirius nodded and gave James a double thumbs up. James grinned.

Sirius opened his mouth like he was about to add something else but then James’ pager went off, beeping madly, cutting him off abruptly. “Sorry, chat was lovely with you two, Remus— do your charts, mate, and Sirius— I’m taking good care of your brother, don’t worry,” James said, “Right lads, I’ve got to run, 911 page.”

James left the room and immediately checked his pager while shuffling down the hallway. His heart dropped to his stomach when he saw the room he was being called to.

Regulus.

June 27: heal | @jegulus-microfic | word count: 799

*surgeon x patient au*

Part one, previous part

If you asked Regulus, he'd say he was completely fine. But after he took the tiniest fall of course his idiot surgeon of a brother made him go to the hospital to get it checked out. But then of coursethe hospital in question doesn't allow family to treat family. So, now, of course Regulus is stuck with the hot, dumb doctor. Of course. And for the past 10 minutes that hot, dumb doctor, who introduced himself as James, has been talking non-STOP.

“Okay, you know what? Stop, just stop talking,” Regulus snapped suddenly, pinching his nose bridge and closing his eyes for a second. “I’m fine. I don’t need surgery. I’m only here because my brother forced me. You can just give me some painkillers or whatever and I’ll leave.” He crossed his arms in front of his chest and frowned at James. “Come on, doctor,” he continued, “do me a favor here or something.”

“Oh— er, yeah, well,” James’ face flushed a bright shade of red, “your X-Rays aren’t looking great, and the only way to fix your knee is with surgery so, ah, I— well you can’t leave, basically.” James shifted his feet nervously from where he stood next to Regulus’ bed. He flashed Regulus an apologetic grin as if it might help comfort him or something. It did not.

“I’m fine,” Regulus gritted out between his teeth. The nerve of this doctor, honestly.

“No, you’re not, but you will be once you get surgery. I promise the surgery is perfectly safe, and I’ve done plenty of them before. There’s nothing to worry about,” James said, voice softening. “And you’ll be able to heal in as little as 3 months.” James sat on the edge of Regulus’ bed and put his hand of Regulus’ leg under the blanket. Regulus decided he would let him stay there for now. “And, uh, not to brag, but I’m a pretty good surgeon,” James added as he leaned in closer to him, “so you’re in good hands, love.” James patted his leg.

Regulus felt his cheeks grow hot as James flashed him a cocky, lopsided grin. Regulus was trying to look anywhere but James’ eyes. He was dumbly scowling down at his own hands, which now lay in his lap, threaded together. Oh he felt so stupid for this. He would not  be manipulated into this surgery by just a nice man with a nice smile. No. Absolutely not. He felt his cheeks flush harder.

Regulus risked looking up to meet James' steady gaze. His eyes showed a little concern but were otherwise lovely to look at, not that Regulus would ever admit that to James though. The other man's lips curled up in the corners just slightly, and his thumb was tracing circles where it lay on Regulus' thigh.

He decided to would probably be okay to share a small smile in return so that's what he did as he still held James' piercing stare. His eyes were so deep with varying hues of dark, chocolatey brown and warm amber.

James opened his mouth like he had been about to say something, then closed it, then opened again slightly, then closed. He drew his lips in a thin line and finally looked away from Regulus. He turned to look at the clock on the bedside stand and abruptly cleared his throat.

Regulus snapped out of his daze immediately at the noise and, instinctively, pulled back from where he was, apparently, leaning in. He trained his eyes back on his hands in his lap again quickly.

"Um, well, ah, I got to- I have to- uh, paperwork," James mumbled awkwardly, giving Regulus' leg a firm squeeze then letting go and standing up.

"Oh." Regulus merely stared at him, not really taking it the words yet. "Oh, yes, you.. go do that, uh, yeah."

"Hey," James said, walking to the door, "If you need anything or feel anything weird, just call a nurse and tell them to page me, and I'll be right over. I'm serious, don't hesitate if you need something."

Regulus nodded, breathless at the moment for some unknown reason.

"And," he added, now already standing in the doorway, "if you could hopefully decide about surgery before tonight, that would- well, it would save me from some difficult conversations. And if you decide sooner, rather than later, you can out of pain sooner. Again, just tell a nurse to page me once your mind's all made up."

Regulus snapped out of his daze... again. "Yeah, okay."

"Alright, see you later, love."

"Later."

As soon as James was nowhere to be seen, Regulus let out a tremendous sigh and flopped back into his bed. He closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose. What was happening to him?

june 26: knee | @jegulus-microfic | wc: 695

*surgeon x patient au* ( i am debating if i should turn this into a series?)

"—alright Potter, I'm heading off, I've got an appy scheduled in about an hour but I'm supposed to meet Black in the on-call rooms right now," chuckled Remus with a smirk tugging on his lips as he dropped his remaining charts on top of James'.

"You're meeting who again?" James tore his eyes away from his charts, which were getting messier by the minute due to James speeding through them at a dizzying rate. He could just barely make out the letters in his handwriting.

Remus' eyes bulged incredulously. "Y'know, Sirius Black, the total Trauma god," he blurted. James shrugged with a sigh. He really did not have time to chat with Remus about his latest guy. James had to go do rounds soon and he still needed to finish his mountain of charts, no thanks to Remus, here. Remus didn't look impressed. "Y'know, the bloke with the long black hair and black scrubs!" Remus said as he was walking away to the on-call room where apparently Sirius Black was waiting.

James sat and thought for a moment. The hospital where he worked was big so, of course he didn't remember everyone's names. Oh, but he remembered the faces. Okay, yes now he remembered Sirius. Yeah, the one that ran the trauma wing like a ringmaster would a circus. God, he was a funny one. James decided to work extra hard to remember Sirius' name.

James glanced up at the clock, and jolted straight to his feet. Ughhhh shittttttttttt, he was late. James put his charts aside, pocketed his pen and joined his fellow residents through rounds which went all very smoothly... until he got a patient assigned.

The patient in question:

Regulus Black, Male, 26, admitted for a knee fracture due to a fall, Head CTs: good, X-Rays: not so good. So, Regulus here just needed a little surgery.

For James, it would all be a breeze, since A) he dominates Ortho and deals with knee injuries, like, every day and B) he's done this surgery plenty of other times. Really all there is to it is putting in some metal pins to put the broken bones together. Real simple surgery. Only about 2 hours. Not a problem at all.

What is a problem however is Regulus. James legitimately doesn't think he's ever seen such a beautiful person. He was in awe of his porcelain skin, and soft rosy cheeks. And his hair, which seemed to be a natural combination of wavy curls, fell over his forehead and framed his face perfectly. And his eyes— His lips— Oh, but his cheekbones, oh, they could cut glass...

"—Potter, Dr Potter, Dr Potter."

James snapped out of it and swiveled his head to look at Minerva. He coughed and mumbled, "Ah, sorry, Minnie, what, uh, what were you saying?" James swore he felt himself shrink as she pursed her lips in a thin line.

"Dr Potter, if you are going to keep getting distracted by the patient, then perhaps I should reassign you?”

"No!" James cleared his throat hastily, and lowered his voice, "No, that won't be necessary, Minnie." He stole a glance at Regulus whose face was blank except for the sharp glare he had pinned on them as they spoke. In James' opinion, it was hot.

Minerva dumped Regulus' chart in James' hands and swept out of the room with a snap, "Don't call me that, Potter." James grinned at her as she closed the door.

As soon as the coast was clear, James shifted his grin to shine on Regulus, who was now just scowling at James. Okay, yeah, James has got this. All he had to do was somehow resist every urge in his mind, and body, and just do his job. Yep.

“Oh, just get on with this all already. Do your job or something,” Regulus snapped. James couldn’t help but marvel at the sound of his voice and felt his cheeks flush. God. He sucked in a shaky breath and let it out slowly as he set Regulus’ chart down on the side of his bed, running his hand through his hair quickly.

Yeah, this was going to be tough.

some people think writers are so eloquent and good with words, but the reality is that we can sit there with our fingers on the keyboard going, “what’s the word for non-sunlight lighting? Like, fake lighting?” and for ten minutes, all our brain will supply is “unofficial”, and we know that’s not the right word, but it’s the only word we can come up with…until finally it’s like our face got smashed into a brick wall and we remember the word we want is “artificial”.
