You are not a true RTTE fan if you don't understand these quotes and phrases...

“Snotlout! Snotlout! _! _! _!”

“The chicken, is not amused.”

“My dear Hiccup…”

“So if my calculations are correct, Hiccup is on his… LAST LEG!”

“I can’t imagine a world without you in it.”

"There will always be a mace sized hole in my heart.“

“Let’s talk about Hiccup!” “What!?”

“We’re gonna live!” “Most of us are gonna live.”

“If  Viggo, you go.”

“Oh my _ _ _ _”

“Dad! Let go of the rope!” “Dad, DON’T let go of rope!"

Hiccstrid in Race to the Edge

Hiccstrid In Race To The Edge

OKAY PEOPLE!

So, I’ve been seing SO MANY comments about how “Hiccstrid was such a mistake” or “Rtte writers really flunked the Hiccstrid” and “The writers ruined Hiccstrid in RTTE, they made a big mistake.” and even “The plot for RTTE Hiccstrid is so bad.” (and these are direct quotes)

People, I really don’t know what your talking about! I think Rtte did an amazing job with the Hiccstrid, and I know people say that it’s rushed, or forced, but I really don’t think it is. Just here me out, and you might change your mind.

So, in the first season of RTTE, it appears that the two are just “friends” (as said multiple times by both Hiccup and Astrid) which leads me to believe this: The two are just shy and unsure as to where their relationship stands. Neither have actually come out and said that they “like” each other in that special way, or have said “I love you” (they still haven’t, but honestly that’s what makes RTTE Hiccstrid all the better, and I’ll explain that later on) so both are unsure. Hiccup knows he likes Astrid, because as he said in Blindsided, he’s thought about it a lot. And Astrid obviously likes Hiccup, after all that blushing and studdering and worried looks and those talks with Heather, I mean, it’s pretty obvious. But neither one wants to push it on the other, just in case the other doesn’t like them in return. It’s just that over the years since Riders/Defenders of Berk, they’ve come to terms with the fact that they’re “friends”, since neither have stood up and said anything against that fact. They’re both just shy, nervous, and unsure of their feelings. Typical teen feelings.

But they’re around 18 now, and the feelings haven’t really depleted at all for either of them, and RTTE shows this perfectly.

Season 1:

Hiccstrid In Race To The Edge

I mean, just look at Hiccup! These two are normally shown- through out the entire show- as either standing by each other, or near each other. And it’s also shown that Hiccup laid out the Edge so that Astrid’s hut was closest to his. It’s just these small, subtle little moments scattered through out Season 1 and 2 that make Hiccstrid look like it’s just starting, or has still hung on. Like maybe the two do have feelings for each other, but are still able to hide them. (From each other anyways. Us, the audience, and Heather obviously pick up ont his type of stuff right away. XD)

Hiccstrid In Race To The Edge

And then “Reign of the Fireworms” the two were teasing each other playfully, suggesting that they enjoy having fun with each other and playfully annoying the other. Very cute, in my opinion. And it’s not too STRONG either, but gradually becomes more noticeable.

And here in Season 2:

Hiccstrid In Race To The Edge

Here, it’s obvious Hiccup’s concerned for Astrid, especially when he volluntears to stay behind and sleep in the arena with her and Stormfly, and the others all joinn in to, when later Fishlegs explains that Hiccup wanted to “support” Astrid.

Hiccstrid In Race To The Edge

Hiccup rescues Astrid from drowning, and acts extremely panicked when he notices she’s gone and not responding. I mean, yes, Hiccup would probably done this with the other riders, but he seemed extra concerned since it was Astrid.

Hiccstrid In Race To The Edge

THIS. And this is when we really start getting the “Hiccstrid” feels. I mean, before this, in the other episodes, we would not have really noticed the Hiccstrid if we hadn’t been looking for it. Otherwise, we would’ve thought “Oh, they’re teasing each other. How cute. I think they might like each other?” that kind of thing. But this, where Astrid half hugs Hiccup and says “But I still have you” it’s quite obvious she’s very slightly hinting at something.  ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Season 3:

Hiccstrid In Race To The Edge
Hiccstrid In Race To The Edge

AND THIS. This is when we really get it! This is where all the other little moments have led to. I just love how gradual Hiccstrid processes throughout RTTE. It’s all gradual, but obvious, but not too obvious. And the Buffalord Soldier only helped with this. It wasn’t too much, and they didn’t kiss right away. It was just simple actions and words, but it was still so simple and clear. But not pushy either. And the words “I can’t imagine a world without you in it” coming from both of them to each other was just beautiful, and so perfect and fitting.

Hiccstrid In Race To The Edge

In “Stryke Out”, the only real Hiccstrid we get is when Hiccup and Astrid hug, but again, it’s just this simple little motion and the looks passed between them that is shining through. It clearly hints at Hiccstrid, but again, IT’S NOT FORCED. It just happens, and it flows very nicely. Fishleg’s also states that “Astrid would’ve killed you (Snotlout) if we hadn’t found Hiccup.” saying that Astrid was very worried and concerned for Hiccup’s well being.

Hiccstrid In Race To The Edge

This part just made me smile, because of how awkward and genuinely surprised they both are at this physical contact. Astrid’s face is priceless, and it clearly states that she wasn’t expecting their hands to touch. This little moment is just another example for how gradually Hiccstrid’s relationship is growing.

Hiccstrid In Race To The Edge

Here, in “Last Auction Heroes” is another small gesture between the two, a kind comforting gesture that Astrid offers Hiccup when they get captured and lose their dragons, Berk’s gold, and well… everything. It just shows that the two are very supportive to each other, and that they still don’t have to speak words to make this point clear. It’s another thing that the writers did amazingly, was just all the movements and hints that made Hiccstrid seem more real.

NOW WE GET SEASON 4!

Hiccstrid In Race To The Edge
Hiccstrid In Race To The Edge

In Midnight Scrum, the two interact even more. Hiccup and Astrid have a private conversation int he Great Hall, and then later on, Astrid helps rescue Hiccup and helps him walk when he loses his medal leg. Again, support, but it’s not forced, or over load. It’s just right, just enough to get the point across that Astrid wants to be there for Hiccup and wants to help him.

Hiccstrid In Race To The Edge

In “Dire Straights”, again we get to see Astrid worried about Hiccup, and Hiccup glad for her comfort. It’s just a few sweet gestures and words, but it is still a beautiful show that their relationship is gradually making it’s way up tot he point it’s at in HTTYD 2.

In “Out of the Frying Pan” we see Astrid is about to give up to the heat, but Throk reminds her to stay awake for Hiccup, and she does, for HICCUP.

Hiccstrid In Race To The Edge
Hiccstrid In Race To The Edge
Hiccstrid In Race To The Edge
Hiccstrid In Race To The Edge
Hiccstrid In Race To The Edge

*takes deep breath* So, “Blindsided” is the episode where the dams break, where they can’t contain their feelings anymore. Hiccup is very concerned about Astrid, and Astrid is starting to despair. Hiccup again offers his support. and since Astrid is blind, there is some more… well… touching and stuff. *winks* and it just brings stuff to mind for both of them, making them realize that they did like each other. I thought that, yeah, DreamWorks probably could’ve figured out a better way to actually get them together, other then making Astrid blind, but it still worked out very well, and I think that the Hiccstrid development is still very good in this, and not over-board, forced, or fakey.

Hiccstrid In Race To The Edge
Hiccstrid In Race To The Edge
Hiccstrid In Race To The Edge

In “Shell Shocked Part 1″ We get to see them again, rather awkward bout everything still, and trying to hide it from the others. We also get to see Astrid’s concern for Hiccup, and it’s obvious she’s worried about him.

Hiccstrid In Race To The Edge
Hiccstrid In Race To The Edge
Hiccstrid In Race To The Edge

In “Shell Shocked Part 2″ we get to see that, again, Astrid is worried about Hiccup, and she doesn’t want him to get hurt and even suggests he go back and stay safe. Hiccup firmly states that they have to go on, keeping their feelings aside during battle, just like they’d done for years. By this time, Heather has pretty much figured out what’s going on, and the others are beginning to notice something going on between Hiccup and Astrid, although none of them (but Heather and Fishlegs) really notice anything is going on romantically. Viggo captures Astrid, forcing Hiccup to make a choise, Astrid killed or handing Viggo the Dragon Eye. Hiccup tosses the Dragon Eye into the volcano, freeing Astrid when Viggo jumped to catch it. After Viggo’s death, Astrid apologizes to Hiccup for not listening to him, but Hiccup just says that she had to let him know what she was thinking. The two therefore share a kiss, right in front of the other riders. Hiccstrid is now official.

The reason I wanted to explain all this, is because I really don’t believe Hiccstrid was rushed, forced, or poorly done at all. I think it worked it’s way up gradually to the point it’s at, and I think it was all done very wonderfully. It’s difficult to get this type of relationship just perfect, because it is a branch off of an original film, and to make it harder, it’s placed between two films, making getting the characters right all the harder. But I think DreamWorks did it VERY WELL. They worked it up gradually, with many little gestures, and moments in between the big noticeable moments, which makes it so much better.

i love this so much u don't understand. this is right on so many levels. Fitz must be so exhausted :(( bc i can and i will tell u how exhausting it is to perform at the best of ur abilities every second of the day. it wears a person out.

and i totally agree with the posts above. love definitely equals performance, and I'm sure Fitz had that ingrained in his mind since he first started school. maybe even before then. and Sophie truly does bring a lot of her human values into the book, so we can't entirely trust her to paint an accurate painting of the elven world bc of her biases and her moral values.

In the Elvin world love = performance. *Ahem* I haven’t read the books in forever but whatever

constantly thinking about how Keefe and Fitz are just two sides of the same coin?? Both are held to unfair and unreasonably high standards by their parents, (Fitz has most of the Elvin world watching him too)

the only difference is that one of them succumbed to the expectations, and did their absolute best to walk the tightrope. because that was what he was taught gave him value. And his talents are the only things he gets praised for by anyone in the books. (at least his parents don’t call him a disappointment to his face… but would they have? If he hadn’t done his best to be perfect?)

and the other refused to fall into line. Not because he didn’t crave approval or his parents affections; but because he knew that their love was evidently shallow. He knew that the love they were offering was only a reward for a perceived value, and not an intrinsic right. So he got called a disappointment out right.

honestly, I see them just as different responses to a very similar scenario. And one of them for some reason is given a lot more grace…

and also, both of them have a homicidal maniac for a family member and blame themselves for not realizing it in time.

anywho; that’s why they worked as friends. There was a level of relatability there.

and all of this ties into how the Elvin world shames the talentless, and how obsessed they are with beauty and matchmaking. Because if you aren’t perfect, you aren’t of value. And this way of thinking is shoved down their throats from the time they’re born onward. Which is honestly why Fitz was clinging so heavily onto the matchmaking thing…

YES

I think the biggest reason ppl hate Fitz so much is bc they forget that the world that kotlc is set in isn't our world. it's not the HUMAN world— it's the ELVEN world, and in the elven world, things work very differently.

matchmaking and all that is COMPLETELy normal for elves, but not for us. we need to keep in mind the environment and the world and the customs that our characters are in before we bash them for their actions. like we need to understand that Fitz— the golden boy, the Vacker— had his entire world pulled out from beneath his feet. he comes from a high-ranking family so he needs to be a good match, he needs to be powerful and smart and great and all that. and he's expected to be the best bc he's a Vacker. yall need to remember that Fitz isn't an "typical" elf— he's an elf coming from a prestigious family. remember that and remember the world that he comes from before u bash his actions. his reactions to the situations he's in is SO realistic. not trying to target anyone in particular, and definitely NOT trying to excuse his actions (bc yes, while there was reason behind them, they were not nice or called for), but just keep in mind that Fitz is a teenager living in a glamorous— but dark— world.

that scene in Flashback when Fitz almost murders Alvar is such a big moment for Fitz as a character. it's so clear that he's breaking (i actually have a theory that Fitz's mind could actually be breaking bc Sophie mentioned that sometimes elves turn violent when their mind breaks and Fitz seems unusually numb to violence, especially compared to the other elves. but idk)

honestly, i really hope Alvar hasn't actually died bc i want Fitz to end Alvar in book 10. i'm sure there's gonna be this big showdown and a final fate for (hopefully) the Neverseen, but I just really really want Fitz to be the one to end Alvar. pls Shannon :)) it doesn't even have to be on-screen... it could just be the battle ending and Fitz being traumatised and Sophie asking what's wrong and Fitz being like "i... i just k*lled my brother..." or it could be like Sophie or someone finding Fitz huddled over his brother's unalived body... pls i know i sound crazy, but come on. what a way it would be to end Alvar's arc. and what a way it would be to show Fitz so vulnerable...

i know i'm rambling now but eh. i think that the reason why more ppl are more lenient with Keefe than with Fitz is bc Keefe's trauma is emphasised way more than Fitz's. also Keefe fits more to our human standards in a way, if u know what I mean. Keefe doesn't really like the matchmaking system, and we as humans don't really like it either. they're both great characters, and they're both amazingly written imo, but we need to remember that this series is written from Sophie's pov. and as a teenager, she has biases. just like everyone.

honestly this was all over the place. but eh. i love Fitz. justice for Fitz. let him break down plssss :)) Fitz was SO well written. Shannon— the writer u are... wow. Fitz's characterisation was sooo good. like i think it was a bit subtle (if u know what i mean) the way he was written, but if u step back and care to analyse his actions and everything.... WOW. ily Shannon Messenger.

there's just something about fitz vacker, a boy who was once considered perfect and the ideal boy for both girls and boys to finally snap and attempt to murder his brother. his brother who he has looked up to his whole life, his brother who betrayed him and the people he loves.

can you imagine realizing that your own brother participating in harming and torturing your friends and the girl you love? and then, your parents decided to give the traitor another chance simply because he lost his memory, as if that erased everything he's done. and if THAT wasn't enough, you were forced to go along with it.

alvar should've died. the scene where fitz stopped pressing buttons was a huge character development for him and I'm tired of people dissing it purely because of the love triangle.

fitz has done some pretty questionable things but he deserves to be angry. maybe don't direct the anger at his friends but he deserves to have a mental breakdown and scream and cry just as much as keefe.

Fitz Stellar lune Analyzation Prelude

So, this one may be a tad bit long.

So, I am going to make a series dissecting Fitz in Stellarlune. This is the lens through which I look at Fitz, for context.

Stellarlune was definitely…something, for Fitz. It sort of made me realize certain things about Fitz that I hadn’t before and was both on brand for his character and completely threw away his character at the same time.

Overall, In this book Fitz was completely demoted to the role of love interest and all of his other wonderful character traits were just thrown away. His telepath skills were there but what else is new?

There was no insight as to how he’s truly dealing with the hatred of everyone at Foxfire, nothing on his relationship with his parents after the craziness of Flashback (haven’t even seen Alden since flashback. Not complaining but), nothing more on how he truly feels about Alvar being partially dead because of HIM (other than that he’s mad about it), or if he still feels that suffocating Vacker Legacy.

Stellarlune gave many inklings as to how he’s taking things and developed his character for sure, but they felt almost empty and almost antagonized him if anything.

This is all because of the series being written from Sophie’s POV. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with how Sophie feels about Fitz. Relationships (of all kinds) are complicated, and one of my favorite things about this series is how painfully realistic it is when it comes to the relationships. The messiness of it all is so realistic for how it actually is for teenagers.

It just…really doesn’t do Fitz any favors when someone who’s a huge DOORMAT (I love Sophie don’t worry) is the one describing someone who can be such a blunt little PRICK (Fitz is my favorite character). No wonder he’s painted in the light that he is in this book. If he wasn’t, it wouldn’t be in character at all for Sophie.

Unfortunately, you have to be able to read inbetween the lines and do some extra thinking to get the actual meaning of what Fitz said and did in this book.

He’s like a riddle that you have to chew on before you get the meaning. Or a taylor swift song. At first you think “this is so untasteful”, but then it gets stuck in your head and listen to it again and again and notice all the touches and effort that went into it. Then you appreciate it, and enjoy it.

Fitz is so hated because he’s just. He’s an absolute character of a character. it’s hard to remember everything in such an intricate series, but it’s very important to remember everything that has happened to Fitz and what his POV is from the beginning of the series to Stellarlune in order to understand his character. His ENTIRE world is pulled from under him, he’s never given the space to express his emotions, he’s lived believing that his worth is tied to him being useful and achieving things. There are SO. MANY. parts to dissect about him it’s stupid. He’s a mess of conflictions. Family, or friends? Vacker Legacy, or improve Lost Cities? Romance with Sophie, or friendship with Keefe? He shifts back and forth all the time throughout the series.

Here’s my take on his personality. He’s blunt as heck. Very little thought goes into what he says. He actually becomes increasingly blunt throughout the series. For that reason, I think it’s important to remember that not everything about what Fitz says should be taken so seriously. If very little thought goes into what he says, very little gravity resides in his words. Thinking of all the blunt people I’ve known, their actions and tone and simply getting to know them reveals how priceless they can be. They can be hard to swallow, but loyal to the core and so, so caring. Remember:

Fitz loves to bake.

Fitz loves giving gifts. He even has a mini gift giving arc. He went from giving Sophie a stupid boring pen to getting her new, unique gifts every day when she was having a depressive episode in Nightfall. That painting was a huge fumble though.

He legit has ten pairs of the same fuzzy pjs. Like what.

He’s really a huge dork. Like, the hugest dork. He literally sat with his sister at lunch for a while before Keefe.

Rambling king. He rambles all the time. He’s so awkward about it to.

Sophie has described his hair as looking like a “rockstar”. His hair looks like a rockstar. He just. He.

He loves sweets. Remember those dry cookies in Legacy? Remember how he kept eating them? Remember the ripple puff he devoured in one bite in book five? He’s got a sweet tooth

He liked having green spikey hair. Fitz was calmly eating his breakfast with green hair and only changed it because his mother made him.

He likes holding people’s hands.

Sophie found Fitz reading a TEXTBOOK for FUN in book one. He likes to read. he probably already knew how to bottle wind but he was still readin’ that “ways to catch the wind” book anyways. Just curled up on the chair readin’ it.

Fitz gave Keefe a pep talk in Unlocked, telling him that accepting help isn’t weak. It was so inspirational and touching.

He actually sleeps with a stuffed animal. For that matter, Alvar confirmed that he’s a little cuddler in Neverseen. He’s a little snuggler cuddly guy.

he went with Sophie to get gelato for his friends. In the middle of a crisis. He just dropped everything to get ice cream for his friends.

He literally has a box of souvenirs he got from the forbidden cities. He got little mementos every time he went looking for sophie.

He also tried to save a pigeon. Just, he just saw it and had to help it. He got chased by other little kids and probably hit by flying sandals for it.

I believe it mentions at some point that he had to get tutors because of how much school he missed looking for Sophie. He had to put in that work to become top of his class. Do you know how mentally destroying it is to be top of your class? He’s just very competitive.

Fitz has a limp now.

He dive rolled to push Sophie out of harm’s way.

He carried Linh when she was tired in Nightfall.

he likes dinosaurs and dragons.

Biana is canonly graceful, so when Fitz said that he catches Biana all the time because she’s clumsy in book one, Fitz was just making stuff up for Sophie’s benefit. Silly.

Personality wise, Fitz is a very feel-y feeler. He’s a huge nerd and very smart, yes, but he’s very driven by emotions. He’s very dense as well. And prideful. He’s proud of his achievements. Those are just his traits. All put together, can he be unlikeable? Oh absolutely. But, if you just accept his very REALISTIC and well rounded character, he’s a gem.

With this mindset (in the next post), let’s dissect Fitz in that Rayni face reveal scene!
