You and your partners were an unlikely combination. A fire demon, a monkey kid, a half-spider, an immortal prince, and a zombie of a mayor…At least you couldn’t say that things weren’t interesting! Some of them, such as Mayor and Syntax or Redson and MK, were couples of their own who were glad to share with you. Nezha was along for the ride.

You did your best to have open and honest communication with all of them, especially if they all wanted to do different things. Such was the situation as of now.

Redson and MK invited you to come see a movie with them, and you agreed. However you had forgotten that you were going to have some lunch with Nezha. And of course, the Mayor wanted to make dinner for everyone tonight. It was all overlapping in the worst way possible, and tensions were mounting among the others as well.

You now sat on the couch in the Mayor's house, which was big enough that you all called it your central hub. The others were all in their own seats, with Redson on one side of you and Syntax on the other. Nezha and MK were on one of the loveseats, and the Mayor was standing near the coffee table. Their voices were all conflicting with one another. Your leg bounced rapidly as you felt your breaths become fast-paced and hard to keep up with.

“Guys…” you really didn’t want to deal with this right now. You had been excited to spend time with everyone. But now it was just a mess. Your quiet plea wasn’t heard.

“Our plans have been in place since last week. Y/n and I are going to lunch.” Nezha snapped. You started picking at the skin around your nails.

“The movie’s only an hour long. Just pick them up after it’s done.” Redson pointed out. His tail was swishing back and forth and it was adding to this sensory overload of yours as it kept tapping on your thigh.

“Y/n, are you okay?” MK held his hands in a “t” shape to signal for everyone to stop. Now all eyes fell on you and it felt impossible to move or breathe.

“I…” you could barely get words out. Why was this so hard? Syntax scooted away a little bit in order to give you some room to work with and Redson was quick to copy this motion. Nezha got up from his seat and went to the kitchen as the Mayor gave you a worried smile.

“Hey, take some deep breaths with me, alright? In,” MK instructed, motioning for you to copy him. You did. “And out. Good job! Let’s do it again!”

You followed his breathing. In for 4 seconds, holding for 7, and exhaling for 8. You could feel your nervous system realigning itself. Nezha came back with a glass of water and the ice cube tray. Before giving you the water, he handed you the tray.

“Here, hold this.”

“Huh? Why?” You still took the tray, even though you weren’t enjoying the cold feeling right on your fingers. But you got caught up in that and were successfully distracted from what was happening.

“Misdirection.”

“Forget about all that for a bit,” Syntax spoke up, in relation to all the plans. “What’s making you stressed and how can we fix it?”

You took your time to explain everything, pausing every now and then to drink water or do some more 4-7-8 breaths to regulate again. But you told them that you couldn’t think in all this noise, that you wanted to spend time with all of them but that it was difficult for you if everything was piling up all at once. They didn’t interrupt you once.

“Oh, y/n, we’re so sorry we made you so anxious.” The mayor gave you a hug as the others apologized as well.

“Let’s lay out a proper plan, alright? Space everything out evenly.” Redson looked to everyone, including you, looking for nods of agreement.

“Okay. I think since the Mayor is doing dinner tonight y/n and I can do lunch tomorrow. Does that work?” Nezha offered up. You gave a thumbs up.

“Then can we do the movie today so there’ll be a gap in between then and when we get back?” MK asked.

“Yes, and then you can work off all the snacks you’re gonna inhale.” Syntax joked.

“Perfect. Y/n, we still have a little time before we should get going. How about you clean up and then we’ll head out?” Redson put a hand on your shoulder.

“Yeah, that works. Thanks, guys. I’m sorry.” You put your now empty glass on the coffee table.

“There’s no need to be sorry, dear. We should have made sure everything worked before trying to pull you in a million directions.” The Mayor patted your head.

Each one of your lovers gave you a peck or a hug as an apology, and then they all started moving in their different directions to carry out plans. MK and Redson had you help them decide which seats in the movie theater to sit in. Nezha headed back to his own house to do whatever he wanted until it was time for dinner, and Syntax went with the Mayor to get the ingredients for the meal.

There’s never a dull moment with this group.

It had been weeks of chasing that red boy down in an effort to get the skeleton key you knew for a fact he had. You weren’t trying to unlock an ancient tomb, however. You just wanted to get into a treasure chest that held a very special artifact that would enhance your own powers, far beyond what they were capable of now. However, something you’d noticed throughout this game of cat and mouse was that occasionally the fire demon came after you first. Taunting you, making some sort of conversation with you, showing off, all distracting you from your end goal. You thought it was getting on your nerves—with how your face would heat up and your heart would race. 

And now, laying in your bed thinking about it…you came to realize he wasn’t mocking you. He was flirting. And what was worse, you liked it.

The next morning, you still wanted to deny those feelings. It wasn’t your fault, after all. Redson had always tried to distract and trick those who got in his way. You went into that familiar fiery realm in an effort to draw him out of his home to fight you. Maybe, if you put all of your effort in at once, you could get rid of him and finish your mission. 

The thought of a fight made you excited. But the thought of him not being around anymore to engage in that petty banter you came to love…

“Oh Red boy! Come out, come out wherever you are!” You yelled. There was a blaze as he teleported in front of you. You smirked and saw that he even had the key with him. Perhaps there was a new plan you could execute; take the key, rough him up, and book it out of there. 

“Ah, it’s only you. I thought it might be someone worth fighting.” He stuck his tongue out at you. 

“Shush. You know I’m your favorite opponent!” You charged at him. He dodged and then tried to sweep your legs. 

“I was hoping you’d show up anyways.” He seemed to be complaining, but it was like a child was being forced to talk to a classmate they didn’t like.

“What, so you could get your ego checked?”

Again and again you two clashed, but the energy was different from your previous quarrels. He was going easy on you, just like you were to him. Was this even a fight? Didn’t you want to win?

“No. So we could chat.”

“A chat? And you’re not even gonna invite me in for it? How rude.” 

“Shut up, let me finish. Maybe I’m misreading this whole situation, but…do you…like me? More than just rivals?”

You froze in your tracks, forgetting all about the key. All about the treasure.

“I—um. This is really awkward,” You managed to say. He was a few paces away from you, not moving from his somewhat relaxed stance. “I mean, I do! You’re really cool, I guess, but I thought I was misreading it.”

“No, no! That’s just how I show I care. I just thought you were really focused on this?” He held up the key and some part of you saw an opportunity to grab it. But the rest of you was just happy you weren’t being stupid about this whole situation you found yourself in.

“I was, but…it felt like flirting? I think?”

“It was!”

The two of you approached each other. He stashed the key in his pocket and you didn’t even care. 

“Wait. So are we…dating?” You asked. He raised his eyebrows.

“Have you asked me out?” 

“I can, if you want?”

“Go ahead.”

“Redson, would you like to go out to dinner with me?” You offered up your hand with a flourish, playing it up in an effort to hide your fear. He accepted it with just as much drama about him.

“I would be delighted to.”

That was a few months ago. Many dates later and you two were going strong. You’d been introduced to the Demon Bull Family, who loved how well you mixed with their child. You still wanted that power you had been hunting for so long ago, but now with this relationship you two now had the common goal of finding it together.

“Are we there yet?” You sighed loudly, your sneakers dragging along the steep dirt path. Redson was walking in front of you, holding a map of the hiking trail that apparently would lead to some kind of temple. You wished she would have just brought their fancy dirt bikes.

“No, not yet. Though if you keep complaining then maybe I’ll just go on my own.” He retorted. Their head turned to look at you over their shoulder, and you could see the empty threat he was making. Sure, Redson liked to talk down to you like they didn’t care, but you knew that she did. Especially when you scraped your ankle on a rock earlier and they took care to make sure you were alright.

“You wouldn’t leave me behind! It would be too much for you to bear!” You paused and pointed at a sign on the trail that warned of bears in a certain direction, not the one you two were headed however.

“Ugh. Just for that, I might.” Red groaned. They pinched the bridge of their nose. You laughed at your own joke—someone had to—and continued following them. The hike was coming to an end soon, you could tell. The path was more wide with some stones mixed in the dirt as if it were marked as the right way.

However, before either of you could continue the light conversation that made the walk a little faster, Redson was yanked up by one of her ankles to hang from a tree. They yelped and you quickly tried to find a way to get them down. A spider-like figure appeared, swinging from a rope and snatching the map from her.

“I’ll be taking that!” He laughed. You jumped as high as you could and grabbed onto one of his ankles.

“Give that back!”

He tried to shake you off, but in doing so he was distracted from where he was trying to go, so you both hit a different tree head on. It knocked the wind out of your lungs, but you still managed to grab the paper from him as you scrambled to get back to Redson. She had burnt the rope holding them, so now it was just a matter of losing this guy.

“That’s one of the Spider Queen’s henchmen! We need to get out of here!” They explained, grabbing your wrist and dragging you down a side path, away from the temple. You ran as fast as you could.

“Leaving so soon? Oh well, I do like a challenge!” The hunter hissed from somewhere behind you. Redson tripped a little, but you held them up and turned to face the spider. He was gaining on you. Looking around, you saw a large branch on the ground. Without really thinking about it you grabbed it and swung it at him, even making some stabbing motions. It drove him back but not by much. In a last ditch effort, you discarded the branch and leapt onto him, trying to implement any fighting moves that you’d seen Redson use. It was surprisingly effective, despite you not having fire at your disposal. Redson was still standing in the spot you left her in, but now she was cheering you on.

“Yes! Beat his ass! Go for the throat!!” They yelled. You grinned and kept going until you knew for certain that the spider was knocked out. Then you got off him, wiping your brow with your arm.

“I guess in the end, he was the fly caught in our web!” You threw some finger guns at your companion, however they only sighed and started walking past you to get on the right path again.

“Annnnd the moment is gone.”

“Hey! I won, right? I have the right to make a joke about it!”

“Whatever helps you sleep at night, peasant.”
