i think 'I trust you with my life but not your own' as a trope is one of the ones that can always fuck me up no matter what
It's the Knowing as I saw someone mention in another context. The thing that is all the more gut wrenching is that the Knowing is not just about their own feelings but about the potential reactions or responses to their feelings. It's the agony that comes with knowing and yearning. For Jiang Tian it's the Knowing that Sheng Wang also has the same feelings but would not act on them. It's the Knowing that Sheng Wang screwed over his exams because he does not want to jostle the boat (or the first home that Jiang Tian has, so to speak). It's the Knowing (from Xi) that chooses to be oblivious to protect himself from the possibility that Lin Beiting does not want to be with him. it's the Knowing that comes from seeing two of your best students struggling with the same feelings that you and your potential boyfriend have been struggling for the past too many years.

The moment and the look and the shared experience and the pure understanding that goes between them. Ugh, agony. Absolute agony but also beauty in the recognition.
Ooph! This twitter post owes me for emotional damages 🥺:

“Upon further analysis, it becomes apparent that there is a deeper motivation behind Sheng Wang's actions, particularly his distancing from Jiang Tian.
It is crucial to dispel the notion that Sheng Wang is experiencing "gay panic" or is hesitant to accept Tian due to their familial relationship. While the latter may be a contributing factor, it is not the primary reason for his behavior..
The underlying reason for Sheng Wang's actions is his desire to PROTECT Jiang Tian.
Unlike Sheng Wang, Jiang Tian has never had a stable home. If Sheng Wang were to pursue a romantic relationship with Tian, it could disrupt the delicate balance and harmony within the family, potentially depriving Tian of the stability and sense of belonging that he has finally found.
Sheng Wang's primary concern is not facing his parents or stepmother, but rather ensuring Tian's emotional well-being. He fears that jeopardizing the peaceful atmosphere at home could lead to Tian feeling insecure and lacking a place to call his own.(Sheng Wang has not yet come to the realization that for Jiang Tian, the concept of "home" is not defined by a physical location, but rather by the presence of a significant person)
Therefore, it is evident that Sheng Wang's actions are driven by his protective instincts towards Jiang Tian, prioritizing his stability and happiness above all else.”
So. The On1y One. I've seen split opinions on the path Sheng Wang chose. I'm not sure i have all my thoughts in order because I left that finale very emotional.
My main take away is that Sheng Wang actually hurt Jiang Tian in the best way to put the brakes on what they both know is happening. Sheng Wang is LITERALLY Jiang Tian's home. He's never had a home and now he had Sheng Wang. Sheng Wang bombing the test on purpose, LEAVING Jiang Tian on purpose, is a warning to both of them that whatever is brewing between them CAN NOT happen, or Jiang Tian will lose his home.
When Jiang Tian asks Sheng Wang, "When are you moving out?" There is a moment of panic that flits across Sheng Wang's face, until Jiang Tian specifies moving classrooms, but that vagueness is purposeful, because Jiang Tian knows what Sheng Wang is doing and he's asking HOW FAR ARE YOU WILLING TO TAKE THIS?
The answer is that Sheng Wang hasn't thought about leaving their dorm YET, but the possibility is there if Jiang Tian continues to push. So, he leaves instead. He helps Sheng Wang move classrooms and screams in frustration over a reality he doesn't want to accept but has to because he doesn’t want to lose all of Sheng Wang. He doesn't want to lose his home.
The story about the mint plant woven through is important. There is no use trying to put a broken branch back the way it was. Pretending it isn't broken hurts the plant. The only thing to do is cut it off and let new growth happen.
Now we wait to see if we get a season 2 so that Sheng Wang can realize he's not a plant, and his feelings for Jiang Tian are not a broken thing that needs to be cut off. 😭
They are one of my biggest ghostships. I need them to do a show together. Even a tiny one. Or a long ass one. Just imagine.

"Sheng-ge! Tian-ge!"
THE ON1Y ONE (2024). EPISODE ELEVEN.
I don't know which is better, your caption, the tags or the gifs but I love all of them.
Tian’s good stuff is laying in bed looking all babygirl and sexy. Of course he’s not interested in your playboy magazine lol. The tension tho 😮💨😮💨

Caption: DADDY and his bratty BABYGIRLPOP

Is it me or Wang seems to like that bossiness? Look at that half speechless half dazed look 👀.

Who do you think you’re saying no to, little prince? 😂 I applaud the useless effort though 🫡.
Wang knows he’s down bad and likes the dynamic very much, but a brat will always stay a brat.

Yesyesyes all the yeses to exactly this. It is the fact that it ends hopefully even with all its uncertainty.
I was worried that The On1y One would give us a bad ending, and while I obviously don't think it was happy, I feel it was a hopeful.
We had both Jiang Tian and Sheng Wang looking out the window and seeing LOVE and JOY.

Jiang Tian tying the knot on his bracelet and putting the two strands together signifying a repaired and intertwined bond with Sheng Wang.

Jiang Tian is patient and will wait until Sheng Wang returns to his side.

And Sheng Wang will come to accept his feelings with the bravery of youth.

They're going to work hard to be together again.

Maybe this is just me trying to console myself, but I didn't hate the ending. A bit sad yes, but raging or upset? No.
STOP SETTING OUR STANDARDS SO HIGH!!!!
Why are they always gay and fictional ??

One day, a lonely simple guy met a spoiled bratty prince. He fell hard, then spoiled him rotten. Like a good “Gege” 😌😃.

I’m the one who needs a leave of absence from bl series cause y’all too much !!! Wang when I catch your oblivious ass 🙂. Look at him sprawled out on bed, all used to princess treatment. Love that for him but give him a goodbye kiss maybe idk.

No matter how angry or frustrated Jiang Tian is with Sheng Wang, and no matter how awkward things are between them, Jiang Tian will always be attentive towards Sheng Wang.
Jiang Tian saw that Sheng Wang dressed sloppily, and immediately helped him rebutton his shirt.

Jiang Tian was worried that Sheng Wang might be getting sick, so he turned the AC vents towards himself and away from Sheng Wang so he wouldn't catch a cold.

Sheng Wang said he ate too much, Jiang Tian is on it with some mint lemon water and hawthorn candy to make him feel better.

No matter how frustrated or aggrieved Jiang Tian feels towards Sheng Wang, he will always help and support him.

Jiang Tian does all this out of love. Now if only Sheng Wang would realize it's not the brotherly kind. 😭

It's all fun and games until the colors hurt my feelings.

Alexa, play the New Found Glory version of "King of Wishful Thinking"
That was the most intensely painful perfectly beautiful yearning of an conclusion I could have possible hoped for. What an excellent way to resolve the build up of tension and sudden smashing realisation for Sheng Wang what he is feeling. And OMG the HEARTBREAK of Tian was so good and so realistic in that he just didn’t know what to do!!!!!! Really enjoy is the foreshadowing in ep 11 of the teacher talking about how his first love almost ruined his grades. And the build up of the storm and the end of summer and the rain and the mint in the glass and just AHHHH!!!!!!
Season 2 is going to sizzle so good and even if it doesn’t happen it will sizzle in mind and I will never forget them <3
Sun x Moon in The On1y One
I wrote briefly earlier about the “looking at the moon” scene in episode eleven of The On1y One, but regardless of how this cookie crumbles in the last episode, I think this conversation was excellent.

The boys are the sun and the moon, which I wrote about at the midway point of the series.

Wang is sun-coded. He is yellow and orange. He is openly friendly to his peers and warm toward them.

And the show has stated that he is the sun like when Wang was teasing Tian about the love poems he marked in the book, all the love poems were about the sun!
A girl's shyness is like a tender cherry under the sunlight; 16- and 17-year-olds are like fruits in the morning sun, sparkling
Therefore, the love poems were about Wang.

Tian is moon-coded. He is blue (and black). He isolates himself from his peers and is cold toward them. And now the show is stating that.,

But just like the book of love poems that revealed how Tian feels about Wang, we get an indirect glimpse of how Wang feels about Tian through this conversation.

It doesn't matter how good or bad the subtitles are because the focus is that Tian views the moon as something bad.
Life has it's ups and downs just like the moon waxes and wanes. It feels like everything connected to the moon is sad and full of regret. The moon shines on Earth every day, but only lights up half of it. Is that half kind of an eternity?

Tian thinks of himself and his life as sad. Everything that is connected to him, he thinks is full of regret. And he only allows people to see his outside by never letting others in. Yet Wang started this conversation off by stating his mom loved the moon and the Teresa Tang song, which we all of know since it was also featured in Moonlight Chicken!
"The Moon Represents My Heart" is an extremely popular Chinese song:
You ask how deeply I love you And just how great my love is My affection does not waver And my love doesn’t change The moon represents my heart
So not only has Wang established that he was raised to love the moon, but he also mentions this song which declares that he feels very deeply for his love and the fullness of the moon represents that love, which is probably why in the fourth episode, he was on the moon when his rocket ship came to get him.

In response to Tian's comments about the moon, Wang offers his take on the moon:
I don't agree with that. I think the moon often symbolizes light and hope, so even if it's only half, or just a moment, a second, as long as it's imprinted in your mind, it's eternal.

The conversation began because Wang's mom would ask his dad to pick between the moon and the sixpence, and in this, we see the great debate of love versus money, the future versus the present, and the abstract versus the practical. The moon is far and can't be held yet the sixpence is close and can be held. The moon would take time to get to, but the sixpence is within reach. The moon is a thought since it holds no value that can be seen, but the sixpence is money that can be used! And that's why the moon is love. And that's why Tian is the moon.

The Eclipse, Big Dragon, and Moonlight Chicken are just some BLs that gave us this sun and moon,

And the thing that they all get right is that the moon isn't the negative while the sun is positive.

The sun can burn. The sun can blind. The sun can harm. So it isn't always the positive entity that people tend to make it out to be. But the moon offers light in darkness. The moon guides the water in and out of the shores. The moon gives hope and guidance to those struggling.

So Wang's mom wanted him to pick the moon because she wanted him to pick love. She wanted him to see the possibilities rather than settle for what he had, which wasn't much. She wanted him to look to the future instead of worrying the present. She wanted him to not fear the distance, but instead know that the moon would guide him toward it. She wanted him to have hope.

And Tian gave him all of that.

So the conversation is lasagna. It has layers. It's about all these different things, but all these different things are the same thing. It's about Wang's mom. It's about the moon. It's about Tian. It's about love.

And it's about hope because regardless of what happens and no matter the distance, the moon always shines in the darkest of times, and guides those who are lost.

So even if everything looks bleak and all hope is lost, the moon will guide you home.

Jiang Tian: ready to cry
Sheng Wang: ready to sob
Me: already sobbing choking throwing up

"You can't even button properly."
THE ON1Y ONE (2024). EPISODE TWELVE.
I've been struggling to put to words what exactly makes me so at peace with the finale, and I don't mean the 'oh I don't want anything else from here' but more so 'even if I dare to dream for something more what I have now is good'. You've said it all sooo beautifully and compellingly.
The On1y One dared to hope for a second season. How else can you explain it's deliberate slow and steady pacing throughout its run? The show made a bold choice not to rush. You certainly won't hear me criticizing that choice. The show was consistently mesmerizing. It gave the environments, the characters, the performances, and the poetry time to breathe, because it's about deep, intelligent thinkers and asks us to reside in their world for a while. Isn't that what drew us in? Watching it often felt like watching wisps of cirrus clouds move across the sky, not for a purpose but just to observe.

As it stands, The On1y One is not a BL but an elegiac queer coming-of-age tale with BL trappings. Many will feel disappointed and cheated by that. The last episode, which would have made for an impressive penultimate episode if the show was aiming for a classic BL structure, gives the audience only a sliver of hope about these boys' queerness and their relationships to one another. It will depend on your taste whether that is satisfying (and, it's okay if it's not to your taste; The On1y One readily admits picky eaters exist).

I definitely hope the show receives a second season. There's a lot to develop, and a strong response from audiences and the directors' public statements suggest we might get one. I know the downsides for audience's experiences when shows are structured with the hope but not the promise of a second season. For me, though, with its thorough investment in the themes of ephemeral pain and beauty, The On1y One is a rare instance where the intangible hope for a future story we can't see lies at the very foundation of the series itself. It chooses to look at the moon instead of the coin.

This is honestly so accurate to my experience also. 👀🌚🤧
the way this episode got me crying, it was so beautiful yet so bittersweet
also, the whole time I was waiting for someone to snap and then tian kind of did but not in the way I expected and it was actually even more heartbreaking
i really loved how dramatic the boys were about the 'separation' cause being teenager really is just like that, but really the class move is only a symptom of sheng wang's general overcorrecting for his feelings and hurting them both in the process. jiang tian had been sensing the shift in their relationship for days, and when it came to head and became painfully clear what sheng wang was doing, no wonder he broke down
How did Sheng Wang dare to even disappoint Jiang Tian. The audacity of Wang's to just go ahead and screw with his answers, to actively change classrooms was enough to really show us how much he was sinking into how insurmountable his feelings felt like. If I was in his place I would've never dared to cross Jiang Tian.

THE ON1Y ONE - EP. 11 | EP. 12
What if the bracelets are their own mirrors? Like the mirror in the story of the 'Princess and her Husband' that Jiang Tian told in the literary class?

Promise bracelets
Their bracelets are a symbol of a commitment between them. They are a physical memento of promises made and their loved relationship. They could also be the representation of the red string of fate between them.
It's funny to note that Yue Lao is supposed to be the "Old Man Under the Moon" (The Moon is a symbol Tian and Wang talked a lot in the previous episode). He is also the god of love and marriage. What fate puts together none can tear asunder. Let's hope it's the case for Tian and Wang.

Subtlety is not Sheng Wang's strong suit lmao
