ouch.
That was the first thing that went through Kaeya's mind when his eyes grudgingly opened.
He had a headache. A mountain-splitting, thunder-shaking headache.
He never got headaches from drinking. Well, unless he drank fifteen bottles or such. He must've really drank a lot last night.
Does he have to go to work today? Kaeya really doesn't want to, with this aching hammer pounding on the walls of his brain. Hangover and work do not go together. Actually, nothing goes with hangover except throwing up and headaches.
Ah, forget it. He has a reputation to uphold, after all. Just because he loves to drink every night doesn't mean he's a slacker.
He limply throws back the covers and stumbles out of bed.
And immediately faceplants into the rug.
Shoot, that hurt. Now his nose and his ego are bruised.
Screw work. He can't go fighting monsters in this state. Every Knight of Favonius would laugh at him. He can't even get out of bed without falling, let alone leap around a mitachurl.
How did he get home last night?
First things first, he needs to take a shower. Then go see Barbara. He'll have to work extra to help out Jean. Kaeya feels kinda bad that he has to leave Jean on her own today. Maybe he'll ask Diluc to bring in word that he's taking his sick leave.
Oh, and he forgot about Y/N. He'll go visit her later. But for now, it's Kaeya time, which means showers, good food, and feeling sick.
After a long shower and a fresh change of clothes, Kaeya steps out of the house bathroom and spots an envelope on the table. Hues of light red and yellow adorn the envelope, and the seal of the Ragnvindr clan and Dawn Winery is neatly pressed on the opening of the envelope. Of course, Diluc insists on being proper and formal.
Kaeya's fingers drift around the ridges of the seal, then cleanly tears the seal open.
Diluc actually wrote a full letter detailing his traumatic experience of hauling Kaeya back home. Elegant script explains how Diluc already stopped by Favonius headquarters to excuse Kaeya from work, how Y/N covered the expenses of last night's drinks, and how Diluc will not be available for Kaeya's leisure for the rest of the week, as he will be personally seeing to a business trip in Liyue.
And... how Kaeya should check out a book from the library.
Now that's interesting.
Kaeya knows, that once in a while, when Diluc finds something suspicious and his Darknight Hero alibi goes to his head, Diluc will find a way to let Kaeya in on the secret.
Knowing Diluc and his liking to conceal allusions in plain daylight,he should probably check it out.
Kaeya sighs, adjusts his eyepatch, and heads out the door. Goodbye free time.
-------------------->
ah, this is the one.
Kaeya pulls out a book from the third shelf. Light blue, with silver threads on the edges of the book.
Triune Trails. What kind of name is that for a book?
Kaeya turns the book over in his hands. There's nothing unusual about this book. Did he interpret Diluc's letter wrong?
"Kaeya, sweetie!" Lisa greets him as he approaches her to check the book out. "I didn't know you were into books. If I had known, I would've made an extra cup of tea!"
"Oh, no, it's nothing like that," he chuckles. "I simply received a book recommendation, so I intend to try it out." Kaeya holds up Triune Trails. "Could you perhaps, enlighten me on the contents of this book?"
Lisa peers at the book. "Triune Trails... hmm, I read that one quite a while ago." She studies the book again. "It's about three girls, who are the best of friends."
Three girls? Is Diluc comparing him to a girl?
"One of the girls discovers something, and then leaves on a journey to find the truth. When she returns, her friends welcome her back. But she returns for an ulterior motive, which-actually, I've forgotten." Lisa frowns.
"Anyway, it's a fascinating read. I should pick it up again some time too. Are you planning to check it out?"
Kaeya nods, and Lisa makes a note on a piece of parchment with an extravagant quill.
"Okay, sweetie, you're all set. Remember, you have two weeks, then you need to come back to return it or renew it for another week. Don't go past the due date, please." Lisa flashes a smile at Kaeya, then takes a delicate sip from a teacup on her desk.
Kaeya chuckles again and heads out of the library.
What could Diluc be trying to tell him? About three girls? Or-
It hits him. Diluc is trying to warn him about Y/N.
Y/N. Her name echoes in his head.
So she was back with an ulterior motive, huh? What could she be back for?
People really couldn't be trusted.
Kaeya sits on a bench outside the Favonius headquarters and fingers the wrinkled pages. There's a couple pages with folded corners, and and a loose silver thread hanging out from parts of the book. Clearly, this book has been around for a while.
He flips the book open to the first creased page and scans it.
There's nothing special about the story. However, he spots a little note.
pg. 157?
Pg. 157 holds a small sheet of paper, with furious scribbles all over the note.
wolvendom. andrius -> south entrance
cape oath. domain/ruins -> east entrance
stormterror's lair. rift -> west entrance
city. library -> north entrance
▪︎Kaeya drinks every night
▪︎Diluc gone this week
▪︎Bennett/ Fischl around Cape Oath
▪︎Stormterror's Lair-?
Kaeya stares at the note for a moment. Was this Y/N's handwriting? How did Y/N know all this stuff? And what was with these locations?
The Mondstadt library. What exactly was in that library?
He slips the note into the pocket of his jacket and stands up, running through the beginnings of a dumb plan.
------------------>
The Mondstadt library was a lot more crowded in the afternoon. But, that was a good thing. Something Kaeya could use to his advantage.
But seriously, for what reason were there so many people? Of course, there were the usuals, Noelle, the Sumeru scholar, and that strange child who claimed to be a hilichurl researcher. Today must've been the rare day that Albedo sends Sucrose down the mountain, because Sucrose was sitting at a desk, flipping through several books and muttering to herself.
Kaeya looks to his right and left. There are so many locals in here. What is going on?
Never mind, this isn't a good thing. He brushes through the locals chatting, avoiding the people balancing precariously on the ladders. Maybe a new book from a popular series came out.
And then there's Y/N.
Shoot. What in Teyvat was she doing here?
She's chatting to Lisa at her desk, gesturing animatedly about something. Anxiety plants a root in Kaeya's mind.
Well, maybe he can still look around a bit. Kaeya studies the bookcases, the doors, the desks. Nothing seems out of the ordinary.
Perhaps this situation calls for a more... patient approach. Kaeya approaches a bookcase, pulling out a random novel, and proceeds to sit down and skim through it.
Time passes, and most of the locals leave. The valley outside is now tinged with sunset orange. Kaeya has just finished the novel he was reading, Corroboration on Teyvat. It actually turned out to be quite fascinating, detailing the various history of the Archons and lesser deities, as well as past and present ruins.
But there's no time to dwell on that. It's time for the next stupid part of the plan. Kaeya waves to Lisa and steps out of the library.
This is his chance to see if Y/N would do anything without him there.
Maybe a minute passes.
Or two. Two is good.
He hears a scraping noise, and then the tiniest of a dull thud. Then, a whistle.
It's that type of piercing, sharp whistle. The kind that echoes through silence. The one that cuts through your thoughts like a sword through air.
But it's the humming that Kaeya doesn't expect.
Not really humming. It's more of a low murmur, a slight buzz, vibrating and echoing throughout the atmosphere.
For a moment, the ground trembles.
Kaeya flings the door to the library open, expecting... something.
But there's nothing.
Not one person.
Not even Lisa.
Kaeya immediately goes into mission mode; velvet steps, hand on sword, eyes scanning for threats.
The library is completely quiet. There is not a soul flitting around the bookshelves, standing quietly, looking out the window at the blue sky.
Only the quiet rustle of a breeze faintly disturbs the solemn gloom of the library.
Kaeya cautiously, so cautiously, takes a step towards Lisa's deck.
Then another step. Then another step.
There's actually no one here.
Kaeya scans the room again for anything, a sign for anything amiss.
Ah, wait.
Lisa had made a special order for a new bookcase in the library. Custom-made in Fontaine and everything. There it was, standing proudly against the wall by her desk.
How did Kaeya know this? Well, he had been the one to help the poor delivery person cross Mondstadt.
The bookcase did seem a bit out of the ordinary. Kaeya peers at the bookcase carefully, then raps on either side of it. A hollow knock echoes out of it.
It's hollow, then. That means it's hiding something.
He takes a step back, observing the books on the shelf. Kaeya had heard about secret passages concealed by bookshelves. Or more accurately, Diluc and Y/N had read about them.
A History of Wolvendom. The Boar Princess. The Vanessa. Visions and Their Myths. A Manuscript on Oceanids. Stairs and The Process of Installing One.
Kaeya chuckles at the title and pulls the book out of the shelf. It slides out halfway and becomes immovable. He adjusts his grip on it and pulls hard.
The bookshelf creaks, and then suddenly swings open to reveal a huge, rectangular safe embedded in the wall. Kaeya uses his Vision to freeze the handle, then lops it off with his sword. Wiggling his blade into the hole made, he shifts the sword around until he hears a click, and the safe pops open.
A hollow and dark passageway is in front of him. Kaeya, without hesitation, strolls into the hole with his sword out.
---------->
This passageway is no ordinary passageway. It seems, to Kaeya, almost like some ruins. The stone walls are shockingly cold, and Kaeya can almost feel the dust pervading the place. The only source of light is his Vision glowing, and maybe the lambent, but distant atmosphere of the library at his back.
The farther Kaeya goes, the more sinister the ruins feel. Kaeya keeps hearing some sort of whisper, and a dull buzzing beneath his feet. Whatever this place is, it's not good.
Kaeya hears a rustle, and instantly his sword is in his hand and pointed in front of him. His legs tense, ready to spring at a moment's notice.
Up ahead, a dark figure with its back turned to him waits. Kaeya can barely see in this darkness, but it almost looks like the figure is a statue. Maybe it is.
Then the figure suddenly turns around, throwing back some kind of cloak and stretching an arm out toward him. Kaeya's arm suddenly twitches, his legs bend, and in an instant he is on his knees, convulsing, sword discarded.
And then the pain comes. At first it's a small sting, then another sting, and then suddenly it feels like a million needles are dancing around him, stabbing and shredding his body into a thousand tendrils of flesh. He gasps for breath as the needles continue digging into his skin. Kaeya clutches his head in his hands.
There's so much pain everywhere. Kaeya can barely think at this point, let alone ask his body to move an inch. The figure is still standing there, with one hand pointing at him, almost like a bored prosecutor. Kaeya's eyes sting with moisture, and suddenly the ruins and the figure around him disappear.
He's back, outside the winery. Diluc is in front of him, with that undescribable hatred brimming in his eyes, a shaking claymore in his hands. His red eyes are screaming fury and malice. Kaeya can almost hear the question that Diluc longs to ask him.
Why?
Kaeya can still feel the shame and guilt and hatred that tore them apart.
Diluc's crimson eyes are wide, tears on the brink of spilling over, his fiery hair soaked by the unforgiving torrent of rain. Kaeya's own locks are wet and limp against his skin. His sword is loosely gripped in his slippery hands.
Diluc opens his mouth and screams.
"I hate you!"
And then, a clang of metal against metal.
---->
Kaeya's on the ground, shaking and trembling, curled up pathetically like a baby. His sword is next to him, unmoving.
The physical pain is gone. But the raw, unfiltered grief and guilt that Kaeya had locked up for so long, had been unleashed. The damage had been done.
Someone stands over him. The outline of a polearm is visible in their hands.

Y/N?
Kaeya stares blankly at the girl in front of him. Was he supposed to know-
oh.
He remembers now. Y/N, his and Diluc's childhood friend.
He had been seven when she ran into him, quite literally. He and Diluc had been playing hide and seek in the city when this girl had popped out from nowhere and crashed into him.
Her name was Y/N, and she had been running from angry cats.
Kaeya and Diluc, being the dashing heroes they were at seven, calmed down the snarling monsters, and saved the damsel in distress. And that was how they became friends.
Ironically, this "damsel" was no damsel at all. As Kaeya and Diluc grew up, Y/N grew up with them. They would race each other, challenge each other to climb up the hill the fastest, and trick other people. Kaeya remembers how Diluc used to be so much more energetic, how he himself used to be quieter, and how Y/N was a perfect balance in between.
They would fashion wooden swords and smack each other until they were all sore. Kaeya recalls Diluc's first attempt to brew his own drink, and how he and Y/N got sick from it.
When he was a kid.
For a moment, a genuine smile breaks out on his face.
"So you do remember me, Kaeya," a voice drawls.
Kaeya snaps out of his reverie and studies Y/N again. Purple leather jacket, Electro vision, exotic polearm strapped to her back. He wouldn't have ever thought Y/N would own any of these things eight years ago.
Eight years ago. It's really been a while.
No, Kaeya. On your guard, always.
"Maybe," he smirks. "It's difficult to remember, really. You have to admit, you're an easily forgettable person."
Y/N gasps in mock offense.
Kaeya looks down at the bouquet of Calla Lilies clutched in his left hand. "Why don't I find this a home, and then we go out for drinks? I'm sure we have a lot to catch up on, and you've never lived if you haven't drank at Angel's Share."
Y/N laughs, a clear ringing sound that stirs up butterflies in Kaeya's stomach. "Sure, I'll meet you in fifteen minutes."
Kaeya walks away casually, trying his hardest not to sprint all the way to his house.
Y/N is already sitting at a table by the time he walks in. Kaeya nods toward her and makes his usual order of wine. Tonight, Diluc is working the bar, giving Charles some time off. Kaeya can't help but feel the timing is a bit convenient.
Diluc mutters something under his breath as he passes Kaeya's first glass of wine across the counter. Then he places another glass, more gently, beside Kaeya's wine.
"This is Y/N's. Don't get too drunk in front of her, if you can manage that."
Kaeya chuckles and flashes a coy grin at the red-haired man behind the counter. "And when have I ever disappointed you?"
"Every single time I see you," Diluc grumbles quietly.
Kaeya chooses to ignore Diluc's words and takes both glasses in his hands, making his way towards the table that Y/N sits at.
"Hello, beautiful," Kaeya winks.
Unlike the typical girl, Y/N does not blush and flutter her eyelashes. She slaps Kaeya on the arm instead.
"Ouch." Kaeya cringes away from her hands. Who knew Y/N could slap so hard as to hurt him?
"I bet you're faking it, " Y/N scoffs. "The great Calvary Captain Kaeya would never fall to a measly slap."
Well, maybe. It did sting a bit though.
He downs his glass in one, throwing his head back and tilting the glass. Y/N looks on in amusement, elegantly sipping her own drink.
"So, Y/N, what brings you back to Mondstadt?" Kaeya asks. She really did have a glow-up, he thinks.
"Well, I graduated from the Akademiya as a Ley Line researcher sorta," Y/N muses. "It's more of field work, really, traveling to different nations and observing and clearing out Ley Lines to extract data. The Akademiya knows I'm from Mondstadt, do they stationed me here to observe the Ley Lines in Mondstadt."
"Sounds fascinating," Kaeya says easily. "How long?"
"Until they recall me," Y/N answers.
Kaeya taps the side of the wine glass slowly. "So you're going to be here a while."
"In theory, yes."
Kaeya doesn't know if that's a good thing or bad thing. Anyone would say it's a good thing, reuniting with an old friend. But he would say that too many things have changed for them to remain the same as they were before.
"Your turn, Kaeya," Y/N says, emptying the wine into her mouth. "What happened between you and Diluc when I was gone?"
Shoot. Kaeya forgot how good at reading people Y/N is. Even more so now, probably, having been trained at the legendary Akademiya.
"It's a long story," Kaeya says. He flashes his trademark smirk in hopes of throwing her off. "How's the wine?"
Y/N glares at him but answers the question. "Refreshingly sweet, although a bit too sweet for my taste. Do you want another?"
"How dare you insult the finest wine in all of Teyvat," Kaeya drawls. "I'll take another Death After Noon, please."
Y/N throws him another glare and gets up to order more drinks. Kaeya grins, watching her go over to the bar counter and greet Diluc, who surprisingly gives her a small smile. He murmurs something to her, and she chuckles, and that sort of nonsense goes on.
Kaeya really isn't sure how to feel about Y/N coming back. Sure, he's happy to have a friend back, but he's changed. They've all changed. He has secrets of his own, and so does Diluc. Those secrets are pretty keen to stay locked up.
It'd be nice to have a friend though.
A genuine friend.
No, he has plenty of friends. And still, Y/N could be a threat to Mondstadt. Kaeya can tell that she's changed too, although for the better or worse, he can't say.
Shoot, maybe she's noticed him staring. See, this is why Kaeya is against spacing out.
Y/N sits down at their table and passes another glass of Death After Noon to him. "So, when did you like drinking so much? I just wanna make sure that you're not a drunkard."
"Eh, well, " Kaeya chuckles ruefully, "I do like to drink quite a bit, but I have exceptionally high tolerance. " He smiles at Y/N expectedly.
"You probably drink every night, don't you?" Y/N groans.
"Not at all, not at all," Kaeya lies.
"You liar," Y/N grumbles.
The conversation continues like this. Kaeya finds that he quite enjoys bickering back and forth like this, with someone who sees him as Kaeya. Not the Calvary Captain, not a potential grandson-in-law, just Kaeya.
And quite frankly, he enjoys Y/N's company. She's a bit like Diluc, with that sarcastic tongue and grudging exterior, but a bit like himself, reading how people react and adjusting to make them feel comfortable. Kaeya really does like someone complicated that challenges him, someone who isn't afraid to hit back, but doesn't push too hard.
----->
After a third cup, fourth, fifth, maybe ninth, Kaeya feels a bit lightheaded. Did Diluc make the wine stronger today? Usually he makes it to the thirteenth cup. It's good that the tavern is emptying out. Wait, where was Y/N?
"Y/NNNN," he slurs. "Did you know that Diluc has flower boxers? He got it as a gift from Don-"
"Snap out of it, Kaeya," someone says.
"He's really drunk this time," another voice growls. "When he wakes up tomorrow I will beat him so bad he'll forget about his hangover."
"Calm down, Diluc," that other voice says. "I'll lug him home- wait, I don't know where he lives."
"I've got it," the other person replies. "You don't need to see how messy his home life is. Besides, I'd appreciate it if you helped me out with that bard over there. Goes by the name Venti. Usually doesn't mind sleeping at the tables outside."
"Are you... talking about me?!" someone else exclaims. "Oh, how I lwuveee wine..."
A nod, then shuffling and protests of being dragged outside. Then a shut of a door, and silence.
"You really have a backbone, getting drunk in front of Y/N. Way to make a first impression."
"I don't want her to have an impression," Kaeya mumbles. " I wanna sleep-"
"Alright, alright, I get it! You're lucky she paid for you. Otherwise I would've..." Diluc mutters on about how he would've subjected Kaeya to labor in the winery.
Everything's a bit foggy. Kaeya can't remember how much he drank, but that wine sure was good. He giggles at the thought.
Diluc puts an arm around Kaeya and forces him to stand straight, then grips his arm and leads him out the door.
The air is fresher at night, when there's no one but the twinkling stars of Teyvat. Archons, did he really just think up such a poetic thought? He must be really drunk.
He remembers Y/N's warm eyes. They were sorta like stars.
He stumbles as Diluc turns a corner to Kaeya's house. Kaeya really did enjoy talking with Y/N. Maybe it's not such a bad thing that she's here.
Thirty minutes of grumbling and shoving ensue. By the end of it, Kaeya is dressed in fresh clothes and swaddled up in blankets.
"I'm a lamb," he giggles. "A blue lamb in white blankets."
Diluc groans and slams a door shut.
Kaeya's alone in his house.

Kaeya doesn't think there would be any other place in Teyvat that he would be than Mondstadt.
Mondstadt is predictable. The same people are selling the same things every day, and there are always familiar faces. Children are laughing and playing, adults have work to do, and everything is orderly.
Yet again, there are some welcome surprises, like visitors waiting to take in the bustling city of Mondstadt. Some surprises are not so welcome, like the attack of Stormterror, the Fatui, and suspicious strangers.
You fall into the last subcategory of unwelcome surprises. It's not Kaeya's official job, but it might as well be, for he is the one always tailing unusual travelers that come into Mondstadt, surveying them for any potential threat they could pose. Usually the people he tails turn out either friendly or harmful.
You, on the other hand, remain a mystery. With your exotic polearm and Electro vision hanging from your belt, it's clear you're no ordinary person. Maybe it's also the way you carry yourself, calm and unruffled, laidback and easygoing.
Kaeya can't help but be drawn to you. You remind him so much of, well, him.
Which is why he has to keep an eye on you at all times. He knows people like him often have an ulterior motive, and you're probably no exception.
The only issue? You're hard to follow. Weaving in and out of the crowd, stopping for what seems like a break and then disappearing, there's no doubt you know someone's watching you.
But Kaeya likes a challenge, so he'll keep this up to see how long you can last. If he says so himself, his endurance is quite extraordinary.
You stop by Wagner's, carefully studying every object that the man has for purchase. When you finally pay for the lucky item you've chosen, you murmur something to Wagner. Something that makes the man crack a rare smile.
Huh. That's his thing. Kaeya has always been the one to chat and joke with the locals, making them smile until their faces hurt. How else would he become known as "Top Candidate for Grandson-in-Law?"
Wagner waves you off as you continue on your sightseeing tour of Mondstadt. Your next stop? The Cathedral in Mondstadt, where all the people who dislike Kaeya most are. What a piece of luck.
Still, his duty is to Mondstadt. So with a disgruntled heart, he makes his way past the big doors of the cathedral into the building.
He's certain you haven't seen him yet. Judging from your alert character, he'd take a guess that you know someone's following you, but don't know who. Maybe he should just wait around outside.
It's too late now, though, as Barbara spots him. This is one of the rare days that Barbara isn't out helping the people of Mondstadt, and instead assists the other Sisters in the cathedral. Kaeya internally groans at the way things have turned out today.
"Kaeya! It's so lovely to see you here. Are you looking to pray to Barbatos?" Barbara's hopeful eyes search his face for any sign of goodwill towards the Archon, and Kaeya can't help but give in. He flashes her his trademark smirk.
"Of course, I simply couldn't miss out on the opportunity to interact with both Lord Barbatos and our precious Barbara!" He chuckles.
He takes a quick glance at you, to see if you've noticed him. Luckily, it seems you're deep in conversation with one of the sisters, so he turns back to Barbara.
"Barbara, by any chance, have you talked to Mr. Goth lately? I haven't had a chance to check up on him," Kaeya says smoothly, redirecting the focus away from prayers.
Barbara immediately responds guiltily.
"Oh no, I hadn't even thought to check up on Mr. Goth! Ah, I should've thought to talk to him, but I've been so busy helping Lisa with her books and Ellin with her bruises from training! Oh, and I haven't even made the drink for Marjorie that I said I would make her! Oh, I'm so behind..."
Kaeya couldn't help but feel bad for Barbara. Such a young girl with so many needless worries, he thought.
Just then, he saw your purple figure leave the cathedral in the corner of his eye.
that's my cue to leave.
"Barbara, as much as I would love to catch up with you, I'm afraid I have some business to attend to," Kaeya says. " Do take care of yourself." He lazily waves at her as he struts out of the cathedral.
The sun is already setting. The locals are packing up their things, some ready to go home, some ready to hit the tavern. As much as a glass sounds good, Kaeya has other things to do. It's such a shame he has to pass up on wine.
You're heading to Floral Whisper, the flower shop run by Flora. Kaeya subtly waits around With Wind Comes Glory, keeping an eye on where you might go next. You head toward Angel's Share after you've finished purchasing your flowers. Perfect.
Kaeya is a master at getting confessions out of drunkards. If he can get you to drink enough, he should have all the answers in his hands.
Kaeya strolls nonchalantly towards his favorite place in Mondstadt, hands in pockets. To anyone else, it would look like he was just walking to the tavern. But maybe you would know better.
Only there's no sign of you in the alley. Kaeya looks left and right. Surely he couldn't have lost you! You were walking into the alley as clear as day.
"Looking for someone, handsome?"
Kaeya spins around to find you. Now that you're up close, he can fully absorb all the details of his target that he's been tracking for so long.
You're wearing a purple leather jacket, with that unusual polearm strapped to your back. Your Electro vision dangles from the utility belt you wear over your leggings, and your fingers encircle a bouquet. Wait, what?
You hold out the wrapped flowers to him, smirking lightly. "Calla Lilies are your favorite flower, no?"
Kaeya takes the bouquet, a bit dumbfounded. Then he recovers his trademark grin. "And who might I have the pleasure of speaking to?"
"Kaeya, don't tell me you don't remember me. Your childhood friend, and you forgot after just a couple of years?"
Your lips curl upwards.
"I guess I'll refresh your memory then. My name's Y/N. Ring a bell yet?"

Y/N likes flowers.
She really does. Or that's what she told herself as Claire dragged her around the shop.
Claire is the type of girl who loves to daydream, is a hopeless romantic, keeps seven diaries, gets flustered easily around boys, and likes pink. There's nothing wrong with any of that. It's just that sometimes, Y/N doesn't know how she ever put up with Claire's giggly, daydreamy antics long enough for Claire to declare them friends.
It was definitely not on her to-do list to go shopping for bouquets of flowers so that Claire could gift her latest boyfriend something for Valentine's. With the artificial minty smell in the shop, the crowded aisles bursting with succulents and pots, Y/N couldn't help but feel just a bit claustrophobic.
"Ah, Y/N!!! Do you think Jay will like these?"
Y/N barely turned around before a bouquet of daisies were shoved into her face. Claire beamed eagerly, anticipating her reaction. "Soooo, how is it? Do you think he'll like these? Well, actually, now I'm not so sure... because Jay's actually like the bad boy type, but I feel like he's a softie... oh, honestly, he's so dreamy..." She gazed wistfully at the daisies.
don't kill the flowers. you pay for what you break.
just keep breathing and definitely don't snatch the flowers and stomp on them because your wallet will definitely be ruined if you do-
Y/N snapped a bright smile on her face as she waved the flowers away from her face. "Honestly, Claire, it's just flowers. Don't overthink too much.
And shouldn't Jay be the one getting you flowers? I mean-"
"No!! He can't do that! That'd be too sweet of him! I mean, I would LOVE it if he did, but I'm not expecting it, and I really honestly truly just want him to like me more and so I'll give him these and-"
Y/N tuned out the rest of Claire's rambling. She really couldn't care less about Jay, Claire's latest fling, who wore a beanie over his caramel hair every time she saw him and flirted with every pretty girl. Y/N didn't like him much, but Claire was smitten at first sight. While she fantasized about professing her love to Jay, Y/N schemed for ways to avoid third-wheeling on their dates.
It wasn't that she didn't love her friend. Claire, who she met back in high school, who had her back through thick and thin. Y/N just really, really, really hated having to think about romantic relationships. She couldn't afford to be selfish and indulge in romantics while she had to solve so many other things first.
Like how she kept-
no, she'd worry about that later. For now, worry about Claire, who was definitely going to get her heart broken again.
there.
Claire scrutinized a bouquet of poppies. "How 'bout these?" She turned to Y/N and pointed out the flowers.
if fate is real, this is not funny.
Claire squealed in delight. "Those are perfect! Wait... no, Jay's a bad boy. Bad boys don't like pink.
But.... I'll buy them for you!" Claire picked up the bouquet with a flourish and presented it to Y/N. "Think of it as a sign of my friendship to you."
aww.
that's actually... really nice.
Y/N couldn't stop the small smile from blooming.
"You're smiling! Oh my gosh, this is a fullblown smile and not just those smirks!!!" Y/N was met with the huge, classic, contagious Claire smile.
"Whatever, whatever. Just pick out some flowers for Jay and let's go."
After ten minutes of walking up and down the aisles, Claire finally settled on some fancy black roses. She paid for both bouquets with a big, satisfied smile and proceeded to excitedly drag Y/N out of the shop.
"Ok, soooooo me and Jay planned to meet at that one coffee shop with the big teddy bear sign! Oh, do you remember what it was called?"
Y/N sighed. "First of all, how do you not know the name of your date location? The cafe is called The Sugar Cube. And why is there even a teddy bear at the entrance?"
"Because teddy bears are a sign of love, " Claire responded patiently.
"No they aren't."
"Yeah they are."
"No they aren't- you know what, forget it."
Y/N bit her lip anxiously as they walked toward the cafe. It just so happened that there were lots of couples in there. Lots of couples.
Did she mention she didn't like lots of couples?
"Claire, I don't feel so good," Y/N lied. "Maybe I should go home."
please please please don't let me go in there where all those happy couples are-
"You're such a liar," Claire sighed. "Honestly, I don't get it. What is it about Jay that you don't like?"
it's not Jay, really.
"Have a nice time at your date, and thanks for the flowers!" Y/N snatched the flowers from Calire's hand and walked off, flashing an apologetic smile.
Y/N really just doesn't want to throw up and ruin a bunch of dates.
"Hey! You know, I'm sick of your crabby attitude lately! You should be happy for me and Jay!" Claire shouted at Y/N's retreating figure.
i'm happy for you though. i just don't want to make you unhappy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Y/N groaned as she collapsed onto her couch. Her comfy, comfy couch.
Why couldn't everything be this way? Comforting and understanding and accepting.
Y/N laughed at the irony of the thought. She was not comforting, not understanding, and most definitely judgemental. That was probably why she didn't have many friends. She probably ruined her friendship with Claire.
no, said the nagging voice in her head. no, you had lots of friends until he came along. until he came along and ruined everything.
He didn't ruin anything, Y/N internally argued. it was all me.
it was all me that caused me to be like this. it's my fault that i'm so lonely.
because if I had never crossed the line of friendship, maybe he would still be here.
Y/N looked for a vase to put her flowers in. She didn't own any vases, why would she? Maybe a mason jar would be enough. She grabbed the poppies and removed the bouquet wrappings.
"Poppies symbolize remembrance and sacrifice," She read aloud from the tag dangling from her hand.
so sickly ironic.
Y/N chucked the tag into the trash bin and sat back down onto the couch with a sigh. Who knew the flowers that Claire bought for her out of friendship were the same flowers that she coughed out every night.
how did this happen? Y/N chuckled bitterly. It felt like only yesterday he hugged her for the first time. Only yesterday had they watched scary movies and laughed on rollercoasters and made pancakes together. She still remembered the scent of vanilla and sea salt whenever he was around. He'd always blink those doe eyes of his and flash his bunny toothed smile whenever he wanted to get something from her.
They'd been good friends. Childhood friends. He'd always come over to her house after school to study, and wind up playing video games instead. She remembered when he got sick and couldn't come to school, so she brought all his schoolwork over to his house and talked to him while he napped. She remembered the times when he made her laugh so much she'd cried, when he'd scared off the bullies that harassed her, when he bought her flowers after she broke up with her first boyfriend. The thought made her throat tight and itchy.
How long had it been since they wrote silly songs together and drove the popular girls crazy when they hugged? How long had it been since he'd given her his sweater when she was shivering? How long had it been since she crossed that forbidden line and kissed him?
it's all my fault. It's all my fault. It's all my fault.
She should've known he didn't feel that way. She should've known to ask for his permission. But she was just so pent up with emotion and caught in the moment.
No, she couldn't make excuses.
It was her fault that he distanced himself afterwards. It was her fault that their friendship broke apart.
She should've been happy when he found another girl and became happy again.
Instead, here she was, reminiscing over poppies and battling her urge to cough.
Sometimes childhood friends are just meant to be friends.
No, that feeling in her throat was worse now. The coughing was coming back. Even worse, the petals. She could feel them in her throat.
No no no no no.
Y/N barely made it to the toilet in time before she threw up. She heaved petals and petals and petals of pink poppies out of her mouth, each petal more soaked with blood than the last.
All she could hear was her ragged breathing and her beating heart. Well, and the remaining blood dripping from her lips into the toilet.
She wished she had someone holding back her hair. She wished he was holding her hair back like he did when she drank too much and had a hangover the next morning.
Just the thought of his fingers brushing her skin had her choking out more petals. Those pretty pink leaves stained with crimson blood, showering out and floating down into the toilet. How poetic.
She could only blame herself for falling in love with the person she couldn't afford to lose.
What would he say to that? But you'll always have me, he'd beam when she used to lament about another boy she ruined her chances with.
Honestly, screw you.
I love you, Jeon Jungkook.
A grim smirk formed on her face as she threw up yet again into the toilet.
"Jagiya, the pancakes are going to burn!" And all my work will be ruined! "Jin says, trying to twist around in your embrace.
You shakes her head cutely. "They're not going to burn, jagi. When has the World Wide Handsome chef ever let a measly pancake burn?"
Jin huffs in affectionate exasperation. "How are you so tiny but so strong? Seriously, do you want pancakes for breakfast or not?"
"I want to eat pancakes, but I want to eat you too," you deadpan.
Jin freezes for a second, then glares down at you. "You're not funny, jagiya." He hits you lightly with the spatula he holds.
"But that's why you like me," you pout.
Jin sighs in mock annoyance and pecks you on the forehead.
Jeon Jungkook thinks he's in serious trouble.
He can't stop looking into her eyes. He's fascinated by the depth of her eyes. A perfect fusion of caramel and chocolate. And her beautiful, lush, healthy hair, cascading like a waterfall down her shoulders and back.
He doesn't think he can bring himself to initiate a conversation either. He's too busy admiring how put together she is, how impeccable her fashion taste is. He swears she looks cuter than she was yesterday. Does she know how good she looks, he wonders, in that white turtleneck sweater and black leggings that emphasize her slim legs? Everything, down to her nails, is perfect.
He hopes he looks somewhat perfect.
Everything needs to be perfect on this date for her.
But it's not.
Jungkook drums his fingers on his leg nervously. Since the start of their date, Hyeji was on her phone, barely sparing a glance at him. He thought he'd make it up to her, for being busy with work lately, and take her out. In his mind, he thought she'd be the same affectionate, warmhearted, giggly person he fell in love with. They had a lot to catch up on, and he missed her.
He remembered the days where they had done everything together. Cooking, karaoke, arcades, movies. They'd done it all. There was nothing he wouldn't do to make her smile. He missed her laugh, the sincere, head-thrown-back giggle she'd make whenever he picked her up and spun her around, not caring who was around.
Gosh, he missed kissing her.
"Babe?" he tried. "Do you not like the food? Do you want me to order something else?" He picks up the cafe menu.
Hyeji looked up from her phone and smiled.
"Jungkook, it's okay," she reassured. "It's just my boss. You know how he is." She looked down at her phone again as it lit up, tapping out a message.
Jungkook frowned. "Is he giving you a hard time? Is everything at work okay?"
Hyeji sighed in defeat. "Honestly, Jungkook, everything's fine. You don't need to worry. I just-" she paused as her phone began ringing. "I need to take this call," she said. "I'm sorry, just wait and I'll be right back."
compassion, jungkook. remember to be compassionate and understanding and patient, he mentally chides to himself as his temper rises slightly.
Jungkook stares longingly after her as she hastily gets up and walks outside the cafe. What did he do wrong? Suddenly the strawberry cheesecake that he ordered for them to share doesn't seem so appetizing. He clenches his fist under the table.
Five minutes pass.
Fifteen minutes.
Has it been half an hour already?
Jungkook makes up his mind to go outside and look for her. He's so done with this silent treatment.
After paying for the meal they barely ate, Jungkook gets up and walks out, running his hands through his hair in frustration. Hyeji isn't outside the cafe. He looks left and right.
No sign of her.
maybe she left, he thought.
she wouldn't leave without telling me. would she?
The street outside is bustling, full of chattering and laughing people. There are happy couples everywhere, giggling and kissing and holding hands. Jungkook feels sick.
He wants to sit down. There's a bench under a tree, right there, but there's only one bench, and there's someone sitting there already.
screw it, he thinks. he needs to sit and think.
As he approaches the bench, you look up.
You're wearing a t-shirt and jeans. He can't help but notice your worn-down blue and white sneakers, the small white clip in your hair, the way your eyebrows press together questioningly as he walks toward you. And your eyes. Your eyes remind him of Hyeji. Caramel and chocolate. Comfort and warmth. Like she used to be.
His eyes sting painfully.
"I... uh, is it okay if I sit here?" he manages. There's something different about you. It's throwing him off.
You nod in confirmation and scoot over to one side of the bench to make room.
"Thanks," Jungkook exhales.
"No problem," you reply.
Jungkook sits down on the other side of the bench and sighs slowly. It's a long, weary sigh, the kind that someone makes when it's been a long day and they don't know what to do.
He fishes for his phone in his pocket and texts Hyeji.
[4:02 PM, July 22]
Jungkook:
Babe, are you okay? (Sent)
Where are you? (Sent)
no answer, he thought.
He shoves his phone in his pocket in disappointment.
You glance at him. "Usually I don't talk to strangers," you chuckle," but are you okay?"
woah.
Jungkook is surprised by your question. He didn't expect you to look at him with that pretty face, let alone ask him something. He searches your eyes hesitantly. He has to give you credit for being kind.
"Um, are you listening?"
"Huh?" he says. "Oh, I'm sorry... just... zoning out for a bit."
"I can tell," you say, with a hint of humor in your voice. "I said, are you okay?"
Jungkook starts to nod, and then pauses. "To be honest, I'm not really sure," he confesses.
He looks at you for any sign of judgement. But you, your eyes tell him that you're open to listening.
"Well..." he runs his hand through his hair, unsure where to start. "My girlfriend, I haven't seen her in a while due to work, so I took her out on a date today. But she was just... she was just on her phone the entire time. She didn't really talk to me, heck, she barely looked at me." A bitter laugh springs out from his throat. "I asked her about it, and she said her boss was just giving her a hard time."
You gaze at him with understanding. "I get that," you murmur.
Jungkook inhales slowly. "She stepped outside to call her boss, and she... never really came back in. God, that sounds stupid, doesn't it?" Another bitter laugh works its way up his throat. "I feel like a jerk, ranting to a stranger."
The corner of your lips go up. "I'm Y/N," you say, and reach your hand out for a handshake. You fully smile when Jungkook shakes your hand. "There, we're not strangers anymore."
Jungkook chuckles. "I'm Jungkook."
"Jungkook," you say thoughtfully. "That sounds familiar."
Alarm bells go off in his head. What was he thinking, giving his name to a stranger? Well, to an acquaintance.
"It's okay," you reassure. "If you're someone famous or something, I won't tell anyone. I can't even remember who you are anyway."
Jungkook laughs slightly at that.
"So, why are you here? I don't think people sit on a bench for an hour," he says lightly.
Your eyes narrow slightly. "And how would you know I was here for an hour?" you challenge.
Jungkook scratches his chin. "I think I saw you sitting here when me and my girlfriend started our date, which was... an hour ago." He furrows his brow as he looks at you more closely.
You do seem calm and unruffled, he'll admit that. He didn't notice the slight red tinge of your eyes when he first sat down. "I think it's my turn to ask if you're okay," he continues.
You smile slightly. "You're observant, I'll give you that."
Jungkook cocks a eyebrow, waiting.
You take a deep breath. "Well, my boyfriend and me were planning to go on a date here. If I assume correctly, it was gonna be at the same cafe that you went to. But, uh," you laugh lightly. "I think he stood me up. Probably for work or something," you say ruefully. "I should've known he didn't really plan to come. We've been drifting apart for a couple months."
It's Jungkook's turn to look at you with understanding.
You take another deep breath. "To be honest," you begin. "I think he's cheating on me."
Well, Jungkook wasn't really expecting that.
"I saw him texting someone, I think another girl," you say as you look down at your hands. "He told me Hyeji was just his employee, but he always has weird marks on his neck coming back from work, and-"
Jungkook tries his best not to gasp. He really did. He still couldn't stop the small intake of breath as he heard Hyeji's name.
hyeji.
hyeji.
hyeji.
she cheated on me?
she cheated on me??
my girlfriend, who i would do anything to make her laugh, cheated on me?
He looks at you with panic in his eyes. And it hits you a moment later.
"Jungkook? Hyeji... she's your girlfriend?"
He barely nods.
it all makes sense.
somehow, i've been cheated on, and so has Y/N.
Forcefully, he wrenches his brain back on to the right track, with "i've been cheated on" thundering in his mind.
You clench your hands. "So I've really been cheated on," you voice aloud. "Jungkook, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have..." you trail off as Jungkook brushes her hand.
"Y/N, don't be sorry. I guess... some things happen for a reason," he says bitterly.
He hides his face in his hands. "Y/N," he whispers. "I gave her so much. I still love her so much. Is this... is her cheating on me my fault? I went away for work and I wasn't there for her and-" his voice cracks.
You gently pries his hands away from his face and squeezes them. "It's not your fault, Jungkook. Look at me," you command. "Jungkook, listen. It's not your fault, it's my boyfriend's fault. Well, now my ex's fault," you chuckle, bitterness in your tone.
"Jungkook? Listen, Jungkook, it's not- oh, don't cry," you say with a note of worry. Jungkook can't help the lonely tears that trickle down his face. He doesn't want to cry.
"Please don't cry." You brush a tear away with your thumb.
His phone buzzes to life in his pocket, his ringtone warbling out into the world.
Jungkook hastily wipes at his eyes and fumbles for his phone. "Stay quiet and don't say anything," he orders.
"YAH, JUNGKOOK WHERE ARE YOU?! IT'S 5:30 AND YOUR DATE ISN'T OVER YET?? THIS IS NOT HOW I RAISED-"
Jungkook hits the speaker button off and grimaces in apology to you.
"Please, hyung, I'm on my way back. Please don't yell, I'm okay, I'm-" Jungkook's voice breaks just the tiniest bit. "Do you guys still have any leftovers for dinner? The date didn't... really go as planned."
Jungkook mutters a bit more into the phone and then hangs up. "I'm really sorry, I have to go," he murmurs. "I'm sorry for the trouble, I-"
"Wait," you say. You swipe his phone from his hand and quickly add your number, then hand it back to him.
"You can delete my number if you want, but if... if you ever need someone to talk to, I'm here, okay?" you say. Jungkook swears he has never heard more understanding or compassion in someone's voice.
"If we ever talk again, maybe I'll remember who you are next time." You give a little laugh.
Jungkook gazes at you with gratefulness. "Thank you, Y/N," he rasps. "Honestly."
He takes off suddenly, jogging down the street.
Jeon Jungkook knows he's in some serious trouble.
"In Teyvat, the stars will always have a place for you" or something like that
Is there like a chair floating in the cosmos, just waiting for me to somehow float up there and relax??
[Just some random weird side thoughts on Genshin Impact]
If the Knights of Favonius are at my service, does that mean they can do my homework?????? Jeannnnnnnn explain the meaning of math pleaseeeeeee
Okay so hear me out if Katheryne is a robot, who built the robot? I know I've heard stuff like the fatui is actually in charge of the adventurers guild but then do they control katheryne? Is it like raiden shogun and ei sorta
if Celestia is a floating island/Jade chamber thingies, does it have a conscience of its own?? Or is there a being that controls it?? Because it would be really weird to hear like a booming deep voice with the echoey effects coming from a floating island
And what kind of island has powers to obliterate a nation? Personally I wouldn't be too confident in the world's safety if a floating island was overseeing the entire universe. Can it think for itself or is it like programmed like the raiden shogun? What if one day Timmy was walking and he gets shot down like I shoot his pigeons??
And why Timmy have a ruin guard as an imaginary friend??? Anything but a ruin guard!! How does he even know what a ruin guard looks like
And on a serious note hoyomix needs to stop sexualizing the female characters so much and giving them such tiny skirts!! I know a lot of females are pretty much adults but I don't like looking at ei from the front even though she's my favorite character
Also I don't simp cause I like to believe I'm above that but kaeyaisfineeeeepleasewhycanttherebeakaeyaonthisworld
why is my other post not showing up when I click on the left side bar???
The troubles of being new to Tumblr 😭😭
anyway my tangent of a rant that hopefully no one will ever find....
And why are all the usernames that I want taken already?? Seriously there's a lot of people on Tumblr
Wait I got off topic
Genshin impact train of thoughts here I come!!!!
Why are some of the best tracks of genshin not a spincrystal
Also mondstadt you are my favorite nation (by 0.00000000001 pts) but why don't you have any five star polearms????? You only have like one polearm, and Rosaria isn't that good!!!!
A lot of people really like zhongli's theme but I don't get why
Like it's okay but personally not my style
Eula's is better in my opinion
And why does everyone like diluc so much?? He's good but Kaeya is the underrated brother
I truly don't understand what is so appealing about diluc, unless people really have a thing for serious and strict yanderes minus the yandere creepy attitude
also kaeya and diluc deserve a theme song!!! I'm so mad hoyomix didn't give them one. At least make symphony of boreal wind and charge fearless warriors their song bc they fit together perfectly
If you haven't heard the combination of those two songs you don't know genshin music at all
Kaeyasimp has saved many lives with their video
I wish hoyomix would give more theme songs to mondstadt characters
Mondstadt characters are some of the most beloved characters so it doesn't make sense ad to why they would exclude them
Im so excited for natlan!!!!
Also why is wanderer so loved too?? I mean his plot arc is amazing and so very angsty and tragic but his character is a bit less than super nice
Do people really like tragic and gruff characters??
But I do respect those opinions though like whatever you like you like 🤷♀️
Also can we get some canon ships that would make my heart warm a bit
Okie time to play genshin enough nonsensical ranting
But I want to wish you happiness. Not for views or followers or any other selfish reason, but because you may need it. I wish for these words to find you and comfort you on the day that you may need it most.
I wish for you to be loved by everyone around you. I wish for you to have a loving family and friends that cherish you for who you are. I hope that you can be yourself around your loved ones, and treasure every moment with them, because time goes by so fast.
I hope you live comfortably and don't have to worry about money every day. It's okay if you're not rich, but I hope you have enough to get by and treat yourself once in a while. I don't know you, but I bet your amazing self deserves some relaxation once in a while. It's okay to indulge a bit. Just don't squander all your hard-earned money xD
I hope you can love yourself one day. It doesn't have to be tomorrow, or next month, or even next year. As long as you can be satisfied with yourself one day, that's enough. I hope you realize how beautiful you are. Stop being hard on yourself and degrading yourself for not looking pretty enough, for not being enough for others, for constantly failing at everything you do. You are not worthless. You may look at yourself in the mirror every day and mentally scream at yourself why you can't be more good-looking, why you can't do this, why you can't be that. Stop it. Everything in this world has a purpose, and you were born for a reason. You are beautiful inside and out, you are loved, you are special and unique. If you want something, you can do it. I've been insecure, and I can tell you that it gets better. There will come a time where you will be proud of yourself for not giving up.
I wish for you to get to know yourself. Take some time off and explore! I hope you can do the things you love to do, regardless of pressure or money. Everyone has their passion, and I think that your passion is great, whether others look down on it or not.
Don't hide anymore. I wish I could look you in the eyes and tell you that you are amazing the way you are. I write this to you because I wish somebody told me this. I wish somebody made me feel loved no matter what I did and do and will do. So I'm sitting here typing this very very long "letter" out in the hopes that someone, somewhere, who needs to hear these words very much, finds them.
It gets better. I promise. You're worth it. One day you'll look back and be proud of yourself for not giving up.
" Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
[Joshua 1:9]
