In the dark, the silence is deafening.

Steve has to try a little too hard to focus on the noises outside his window, instead of the ones inside his head. He closes his eyes and inhales deeply, the open windows letting the morning air circulate through the room making the curtains dance a little and rustle the corner of a few papers he’s got laying around the vanity. 

This was her favorite time of the day, he always thinks. Right before the sun would rise, when the darkness would become thick before it’d break and the dark sky would turn lighter, fill with pink and orange shades, the sunshine making him squint his eyes a moment before they got used to it. 

He always gives himself this moment — just this one moment to feel the weight of it all. 

He gives himself this moment to think of her hands and her hair and the shape of her smile. He thinks of her raspy voice wishing him a good morning, and the taste of coffee in her kisses the few times she’s been up before he is.

He feels how much it hurts. 

It’s been five years already, but it hurts just the same. 

Some mornings Steve doesn’t think he’ll be able to get out of bed at all, other mornings he’s more hopeful — today’s one of those days. 

Like every morning, he abandons himself at that moment and gets on with his day. 

He hopes it’s the last time. 

After five years, they finally have a chance.

True to your words, you decided to ask the experts on weird people appearing out of nowhere and shooting light from their hands about the strange experience you had; an encounter that resulted in you gaining your memories back.

Sam and Dean were ecstatic when you told them about remembering everything – including the time you had spent with them though, one set of memories not replacing the other.

After enough cheering via your Skype call, you sent the footage.

The silence stretched as the brothers watched the recording, their eyes wide with an emotion you couldn’t quite place. They seemed spooked, shocked, perplexed and quite a bit fascinated too, to be honest. Steve’s arm around your waist tightened, both of you holding your breath in anticipation.

Oh God, who was the woman? Was she a friend of Rowena? Worse, was she a friend of the King of Hell they had mentioned? Who-

“Holy shit,” Sam finally exclaimed, making you blink in shock. Since when Sam swore? Admittedly, you hadn’t spent that much time with them, but-?

Oh my God! I love you, you actually wrote this. I mean I just couldn't stop thinking about those damn photos and then you wrote this and I'm so happy. Also when I first saw those photos, the first thing I did was send them to my friend with the caption that he's so beautiful that I could just cry. So, you were right!

“Ah, Cap! Just the guy I wanted to see!”

Tony’s voice reached Steve’s ears just as he entered the kitchen after his morning run and shower, his heart skipping a beat, his whole body instantly on alert; he wanted nothing but to spin on his heels and walk right back to where he came from.

It wasn’t that he dreaded to hear there was a mission; that would be fairly alright even if it meant that the world was once again a terrible place with horrible people who needed to be stopped in it. No, Steve’s fright was caused by something else entirely.

You see, living in the Avengers Tower meant spending extended periods of time in Tony Stark’s company. Spending extended periods of time in Tony’s company meant that one would learn how to recognize certain situations; Steve could easily tell when the genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist had pulled an all-nighter in his lab, when he was in a long-term fight with Pepper, when he was annoyed, when he was delighted.

And this right here, the ‘Just the guy I wanted to see!’, that meant nothing good – certainly not for the guy in question. Tony seemed awfully excited, beaming in a manner that told Steve that his friend was about to revel in the discomfort he was about to cause to him.

God help him.
