I have had a year long artist block, anything you do to un-slump. P.s. i adore your blog and art

Unslumping takes some effort, which is disheartening because every time it happens I just want to lay around and whine about it like the prince of bratty artists. But here are some things that you can do to trick your brain into getting creative again:

1. Get out of the house. Go for a walk, go hang out with friends, do things that make you happy and things that interest you and make you think. Watch a weird movie, read a book and think about how you’d illustrate a particular scene or about what the characters look like. Listen to music and think about the images that pop into your head. Hang out at a museum or gallery and think about what makes you like or dislike certain pieces and how you can replicate that.

2. Sometimes doing master copies helps me out of ruts. If I can just focus on a technique without having to think of an idea first, it works to get me back into the swing of physically drawing. Related: going to figure-drawing sessions if there are any cheap ones in your area.

3. Make a lot of crappy art and never show it to anyone. If an idea pops into your head, draw it, no matter how awful it is. At least you’re having an idea. And draw it on cheap paper so you don’t feel guilty about wasting materials.

4. If all else fails:

Hope that helps. Good luck!

The Eyebrow Post

Below you’ll find a collection of pictures of make-up I’ve used on my brows in the past and a bunch of selfies with different eyebrow colours. But first, some more recent (as of spring 2014) brow things and tutorials!

Here’s what makeup I use nowadays:

image

Grimas eyeshadows. I love them. A lot. Shades 572, 574, 384, 485, 001, 710 (pearl). I’m currently using a cheap H&M brush, one end is angled and the other is round.

image

Here’s an almost-tutorial for magenta to blue gradient brows. Over the 2013-14 semester I’ve been all about gradient brows.

image

Rhinestone brows and googly eye brows! Here!

image

Yet another variation on the gradient. Rejoice!

This Teacher Asked Her Students to Write to an Author. Kurt Vonnegut Wrote Back This

In 2006 Ms. Lockwood, an English teacher at Xavier High School, asked her students to write a letter to a famous author. She wanted them discuss the author’s work and ask for advice. Kurt Vonnegut (1922 – 2007) was the only one to write back and his advice is worth reading.

Dear Xavier High School, and Ms. Lockwood, and Messrs Perin, McFeely, Batten, Maurer and Congiusta: I thank you for your friendly letters. You sure know how to cheer up a really old geezer (84) in his sunset years. I don’t make public appearances any more because I now resemble nothing so much as an iguana. What I had to say to you, moreover, would not take long, to wit: Practice any art, music, singing, dancing, acting, drawing, painting, sculpting, poetry, fiction, essays, reportage, no matter how well or badly, not to get money and fame, but to experience becoming, to find out what’s inside you, to make your soul grow. Seriously! I mean starting right now, do art and do it for the rest of your lives. Draw a funny or nice picture of Ms. Lockwood, and give it to her. Dance home after school, and sing in the shower and on and on. Make a face in your mashed potatoes. Pretend you’re Count Dracula. Here’s an assignment for tonight, and I hope Ms. Lockwood will flunk you if you don’t do it: Write a six line poem, about anything, but rhymed. No fair tennis without a net. Make it as good as you possibly can. But don’t tell anybody what you’re doing. Don’t show it or recite it to anybody, not even your girlfriend or parents or whatever, or Ms. Lockwood. OK? Tear it up into teeny-weeny pieces, and discard them into widely separated trash recepticals. You will find that you have already been gloriously rewarded for your poem. You have experienced becoming, learned a lot more about what’s inside you, and you have made your soul grow. God bless you all! Kurt Vonnegut
