On Commissioning Artists

Aren’t your prices too expensive?

If you can’t afford me, don’t commission me. Maybe lower your prices a bit so that it’s more accessible?

If you can’t afford me, don’t commission me. You think you’re better than all of us? Your art’s not that good anyway jackass.

If you don’t like my art, don’t commission me. Who can afford these prices anyway?

Clients who have money and want to commission me. You draw for your friends for free what can I do to be your friend?

Not expect me to draw for you without commissioning me. You’re such an egotistical, pretentious shithead, people are trying to tell you something and you’re not listening, what the hell’s wrong with you?

A lot of things are wrong with me, I’m a garden-variety depressive neurotic who’s trying to get by doing what I love as best as I can, and what I love happens to be something people have less respect for than a burger at MacDonald’s, because at least a burger is seen as a commodity but art is seen as an entitlement. The process of “I want something and I want to exchange money for that thing” seems to escape people when it comes to a talent labor, and it’s not about if you, personally, can’t afford me, it’s about looking for clients who actually can, because those people exist, as mind-blowing as that is for some out there, and because even artists have to pay rent every month, and to do that they need the strength and belief they can name the price that feels fair to them. Whether that’s fifty dollars or five thousand is not up to you, they’re their own business and their decision making on their services isn’t a democracy, you don’t get a vote in it.

I’m not a personality that’s easy to bully, and I’m fine with the fact you think I’m a shithead because if you do think that you don’t matter to me. You’re literally not a priority in my life. I will delete your comment and go back to drawing for myself or people who have made themselves a priority to me, and that might be scary to you, how utterly insignificant you are as a voice and presence. You might vilify me as having a superiority complex, as dismissive, or, as you say, an egotistical shithead, and you know what? I agree with you. You’re not wrong. Even to a friend, when I said “No offense, but I will not draw your characters unless you pay me,” and her response was, “Aren’t WE a little fucking princess,” it didn’t take a lot of thought for me to say, “No, when it comes to my art, I’m a motherfucking queen.” I wasn’t even angry. I wasn’t offended. It was a fact I was stating. I have the authority to dismiss you and I won’t give that up for anyone.

But that’s me. I know my value. I know what my time’s worth. I know what my art is worth, because every minute I spend drawing for other people is one less minute spent on my vision and my stories, and those minutes should be paid for. And it makes me sad that it’s people like you that make it hard for artists to learn that, how hard it was for me to learn that, and I hope that me typing all this out will make them realize how people like you are about as important as a bad fart smell. You’ll be gone with the wind and they’ll still be there, doing what they do.

So I’m guessing what you’re really asking is “how can you have more value in yourself than what I think you deserve,” in which case you’re an asshole, and don’t commission me.
