You Dont Need To Be Visibly Queer To Be Queer - Tumblr Posts
Just a quick reminder:
Queer characters don’t always have to be played by queer actors. It’s nice for the representation, but there’s no way to judge how “queer” people “should” be in order for them to play the character. Like, again, they’re actors. It’s their job to act as other people. Of course, not to say that’s an excuse, but sometimes certain actors just make the cut. Do you guys even know about Kit Connor? He only came out as bi because people were pressuring him for playing a queer character as a presumably straight actor. That’s not ok. Claiming queer characters need to be played by queer actors only enforces the stereotype that they must be “visibly” queer enough to play that character. Not every queer person is visibly queer. For example: I’m genderfluid. But I don’t try and “match” or dress differently to what gender I’m feeling. I have no desire to get a binder, or pack, or dress whatever may stereotypically show that my gender is different. And not every trans person feels gender dysphoria. It’s pushes an unfair stereotype that if you’re trans, and you don’t feel gender dysphoria, you’re not actually trans. Just because I don’t feel gender dysphoria, doesn’t mean I’m not genderfluid. I know for a fact I’m genderfluid, because it literally makes me so fucking happy to identify that way( gender euphoria), and I know others who feel the same. But you’re not gonna see me having all of these feelings, because you would literally have to look in my brain.
TLDR; stop gate keeping queer characters and trying to enforce the stereotype that you must act and look a certain way to be queer. It doesn’t help anyone, and just isolates trans people who don’t experience gender dysphoria.
