It was quite an active night. Most of the Clan were out handling business. Their world of darkness, one that you had signed your life over for protection--it was more dangerous than you thought and in order to keep the Masquerade, they all had to play along with the song and dance to keep the balance as well as peace. The two elders of the clan and one of the younger ones were out to do such things and left the care of the mansion to the others.
A word of caution, however.
There was one that you had to look out for. He was considered the middle child of them all, one stuck between the elders and the younger vampires. The one that they had to chain up most nights to keep him from hurting himself and others around him. Sometimes you heard his cries when they did that; the wail that would keen throughout the mansion.
There was no such sorrow that night.
You could hear him laughing along with the youngest as they enjoyed their freedom without the elders. The complaints of the second youngest could also be heard because he was trying to play his games but the others kept bothering him. You were only supposed to check in on them and drop off some paperwork but since you entered, they picked up on your scent like dogs sniffing out food.
Jaehwan was by your side in a flash, a blink and his hands rested on your shoulders--keeping you from running away. His grin caught you off guard, showing the youthful and joyful face that always disarmed everyone else. He smiled sweetly at you, eyes crinkling. Almost instantly, you distrusted what he was planning. There was something cold in your hands, prompting you to look down at them. He put whipped cream into your hands, sticky and fresh.
“I order you to throw this into Hongbin’s face.”
“W-what? Excuse you?! I’m busy right now!!”
“You work for me. You are my slave,” he whispered in your ear, making goosebumps appear on the nape of your neck.
You were about to remind him who the actual boss was but there was a blur. A large blur that pushed up your hands, squishing the same whipped cream into Jaehwan’s face. The older vampire blinked, the white substance smeared all over his perfect and angelic face. You could see the struggle on his visage as he decided who was to blame for that - his little trick ruined.
“HAN SANGHYUK, GET BACK HERE!” he finally roared, racing after him.
He left you there with the dripping leftovers still in your hand and a dumbfounded expression still on your face. Suddenly, a towel fell down and landed on your head. The thing startled you and made you jump, the towel covering your eyes. You stood there for a moment before grabbing it and wiping your hands, scowling in the process. This was not what you signed up for. Not in the least.

He looked at her form in the bed, the way that the sheets clung to her body and encased her in a soft shell that he could not at the moment. The way that the bed dipped with her weight and the way that the pillow supported her delicate head. Hair bunched up and wild from last night, finally resting along with her. Hakyeon’s eyes couldn’t leave her form as she slept, half tangled in the sheets himself. There was a peace that settled on them during the night, something that had stolen their souls almost after the emotions got the better of them.
As an angel, he wasn’t sure what it meant--those emotions that stirred in his holy body. Hakyeon knew of the consequences when Lucifer fell, his pride overtaking them all. He knew because he was there but this was something the humans called love. That burning and searing emotion that blossomed in his chest, compelling him to be closer to her. To protect her even more fiercely from those that wanted to turn her away from him. Ever since he came into her life, one that was lonely and sad, he had made sure that she never knew what he really was. It was the perfect opportunity to keep her safe and as her Guardian Angel, it was the perfect alibi.
She never knew.
But he noticed the signs, slowly but surely--his own descent into his lie turned into truth. He wondered, as the sun started to peek inside of the blinds and into the room as his hand reached out for her. He pulled the sheets further up her body, to keep her from getting cold as he finally got off the bed. She stirred a bit before settling back down and deeper into sleep. Hakyeon wondered if this is what Lucifer felt, if that is what he went through as he agonized on what he should do. As any of them would have done during the War, that moment of reflecting on what he had done. He felt the same amount of love for her that he had for his brothers and for the Most Holy. He cared for them all but he wanted to stay by her side. That was the difference that had changed his mind when he realized what it was he wanted.
Was he truly rebelling in that act? Was he truly damned for what he was doing?
Hakyeon started to make food for them after he left the bed. Slow, deliberate movements as he stirred it around. The sounds of sizzling and the comforting closeness of the heat that came with cooking. His brothers peeked in on him from time to time, making sure that he was still alive--as some of them claimed. Even the youngest, who hadn’t been through the War, even came by to see what was going on. His curiosity was what spurred everything on, the longer he was down there--the longer he started to develop the human emotions, Sanghyuk had said.
One such brother came in through the open window, materializing as he entered the residence. He was one of the younger ones and went by Hongbin while in his earthly form. The angel always looked around, like the second oldest before moving in a space. Something that he must have picked up from him, he supposed.
“You never reported in last night.”
Hakyeon smiled and continued to stir the food to prevent it from burning. Memories of last night burst into his mind, reminding him why he failed at such a task. Yet, it was one that he gladly would do again. At his silence, Hongbin moved into the kitchen to see what it was that had caught his attention so. The elder angel turned off the eye and faced his brother, a calm and caring look on his face.
“I realize and there is no excuse. Did you really come all the way here to tell me that?”
Hongbin shifted around, not wanting to admit that he was curious as to why the eldest of them all would do such a thing. The action made him smile at him even more at the other before the younger angel scoffed, looking away.
“I’m not the one that’s going to get into trouble soon.”
Hakyeon knew that he really did care but just didn’t know how to act sometimes. It was the same for the second eldest but the difference was that the second eldest wasn’t as brash as the younger one. And when the second eldest wasn’t around, he would often go to him for advice. Which, he did wonder if he should tell him--if he hadn’t already guessed by then. The smile dropped a bit as he thought about it but Hongbin voiced it for him.
“You worry that your actions will cause harm, don’t you?” Hakyeon nodded at his words, turning back to what he was doing. “Whatever you did, you know you’re being watched so it is going to pass but you have the opportunity to alter its course. As we all do so just…. Be careful.”
The door opening seemed to be like a gunshot, Hongbin vanishing instantly before the door to the bedroom opened all the way. She walked out, hair a mess and trying to stifle a yawn that was trying to break through on her features. She paused at the window, rubbing her eyes as she stared at it. Before she could say anything about it being open, Hakyeon was already walking towards her--his golden skin seemingly glowing with affection when he wrapped his arms around her form again. He buried his face into her neck, nuzzling into the soft flesh and inhaling her scent. He felt her arms wrap around him, fingers tracing light circles into his back as the embrace comforted him more than anything that he had ever realized.
“So you’re saying that you will betray us? You know the punishment for that..”
“I have not betrayed anyone and you know it. I have room in my heart and soul for more than just one, just like the Most Holy.”
Hakyeon stared down the superior angel standing before him, his brothers being held captive behind him. They were all outside of the little residence, overlooking the wide open field. Not many people came through that way and he had seen to it that nobody ever bothered her. He had told her what he really was some time ago, a little after their first night together because he was unable to bear the guilt of lying to her for so long. At first, he was sure that she would reject him and for a while--she did. It was unheard of during that day and time, fear of the unknown that caused others to turn on their own family. However, the peace that they had felt while together was too unbearable to keep away from. Even his own brothers begged her to, at least, talk to him.
The tree that they had met under weeped under the pressure of the sadness, petals falling all around them as they found each other again.
Now, the consequence of his actions had caught up to him and with her gone to the market? Hakyeon was grateful that she wasn’t there to see what was going on, the ugly side of their existence had shown itself.
“No? We are all creatures of God, your servitude lacking and the fact that you insist on being called by another name just proves it. You have fallen too far from the Faith and I am here to--”
“NO! Don’t you dare touch him!”
All of their heads whipped around to see her standing there, robes dancing in the wind and a hand basket full of things. Her eyes were alight with anger and worry for him, Hakyeon could see it from where he was kneeling. The very reason he fell in love with her was her tenacity but he knew that it would also get her killed in the midst of the more powerful angel. He started to tell her to stop, to run but the butt of a sword was smashed into his face and caused him to fall over.
She ran up to him, cradling his head and watched as blood dripped from his face. Hakyeon’s mind spun, his senses going crazy over the danger that she had put herself in. He was still her Guardian Angel, until he was released from service--he would continue to fight for her until his dying breath. He got up from where he was, shielding her body from the other angel with defiance written all over his face. The Angel saw it, frowning at the disobedience that he was showing before speaking.
His voice reverberated through them, powerful and dark in his words. The Angel proclaimed that Hakyeon was no longer her Guardian Angel, a trigger that he felt in his heart. He felt the connection snap, unbound from his service but still strongly tied to her regardless. He gasped and held onto his chest, trying to get used to the newfound feeling of loss but she held onto him like an anchor to keep him from drifting away.
“Will you still defy Heaven? Or will we have to punish you? You are no longer bound to this woman, her death will come swiftly now. Whatever else fate has planned for her will now be carried to the next life. May God have mercy on her soul.”
“I CHOOSE TO STAY WITH HER.” Hakyeon screamed, pulling his sword out of nowhere. She gasped, rearing back from the sudden provocation as did the others. However, the Angel before them narrowed his eyes at him before speaking.
“So you choose betrayal?”
He brought out his own sword and reared back to swing the sword down but there was a rustle from behind him. Hakyeon realized that when he lifted up his sword to attack, just as the other did--there was someone standing in between them.
His own sword impaling her.
She gasped, eyebrows furrowing with confusion as she looked down. Hakyeon took his hand off the handle in shock, the sword disappearing and blood filtering out of the wound he had created. The Angel stood down, his own sword nearly cleaving the woman in half but stopped at the last second. She fell down into his arms, strength leaving her body as Hakyeon cradled her to his body. He panicked, fear and horror filling up his body as he pressed his hand to her wound, trying to heal the damage that was done.
However, no light came out.
“You are no longer an Angel. You have Fallen and I can think of no other way to punish you now. You have done this to yourself and perhaps, once you’ve seen the error of your ways--we might let you back into Heaven. For all of Eternity or until we see fit Chamuel, you are cast from Heaven.”
With the angel gone, Hakyeon’s brothers all came running up to him as they had been released from their bonds. A wail was slowly starting to come out of his chest, holding her close as the life bled right out of her. It was his fault that she would pass, not some evil that would try and sway her. It was all him and he couldn’t follow her this time, no connection that could lead him to her.
“I… didn’t want you t-to fight.” She whispered, hand clutching at his white robes. She couldn’t catch her breath and he had to bend down to hear what she was saying, “P-Please… be safe. Be good and just. I.. love you.”
“I love you so much. I’m so s-sorry I can’t follow you this time…” He sobbed, holding her closer and closer as if the heat from his body would be enough to keep her alive. He rocked his body, almost crushing her to him. The sobs bled through his semblance of calm, racking his body as he cried. His chest heaved, his eyes screwed shut when she finally passed. His brothers sat all around him as he mourned. The hours bled into darkness, the starry sky above them all when the brothers finally had to pry the long dead body from his grasp.
The third oldest held onto him as the rest prepared a service for her. Hakyeon had bursts of emotion, trying to escape his brother’s grasp but eventually sunk down at her grave--trying to follow her. There was no death for him now and no following, sentenced to live with what he had done forever.
“Did you need any help with anything?”
He looked up to see her face standing there in front of him. Chamuel wanted to try something different this time with the new charge, instead of hiding in the shadows and only swooping in when needed--he tried a different approach by taking a human form and a human name.
He opened his mouth, still a bit unsure on how to speak properly while there. Her eyes were like that fur animal with a tail, he had heard that they were called cats. The color of them were a rich brown, watching him very intensely. He could sense her soul all around her, open and free to everyone that passed by. A prime target for the demons that would descend on them shortly.
“Are you new to this area?”
Her voice was soft but supportive at the same time, almost like a farmer that herded sheep around. One that was gentle and strong in their beliefs, showing others the way. A couple of little ones ran past them with her swishing her skirts around to keep them from running into them. He wanted to protect her, magnifying his connection that was set upon him by the higher Angels.
The weeks went on and time showed that they couldn’t be apart often. He had become an apprentice to the local baker and very soon, she was his favorite part of the day. The way that she came in and stared wide-eyed at what was being sold. The baker gave him side-glances when she walked by, smirking to himself and making himself scarce. Until the one day where her life was threatened by those who had been tempted by the demon’s will.
They wanted her. They were looking for her.
Hakyeon, as he was now called, stepped out into the streets when they pulled sharp objects on her. But the thing that surprised him the most was the fact that she didn’t back down. She looked at them with a critical eye as if she was used to that sort of treatment. He didn’t want her to go through anything like that anymore, not wanting her to get anything soiled or hurt.
The men ran and never came back, her eyes going wider than he’d ever seen them since meeting her. The fact that he had handled them effortlessly had everyone tripping over themselves to meet the brave apprentice. But her eyes were only on him as a gentle smile appeared on her lips, relieved that he was fine.
Then like a blink of an eye, she was there in front of him with a horrified look on her face. He had decided to show her his wings and reveal himself to her. It was something unknown, he knew this but decided to take a chance anyways. He couldn’t fully reveal himself because his true angelic form would have scarred her for life and he wouldn’t have that.
He couldn’t hurt her like that. So he showed her a little piece and she left, half panicked that she had laid with a demon.
Every time he went to her, she screamed and ran. Each time it cut him deeper than any metal, any sword that was in existence. It hurt more than when the War broke out and his fellow angels were fighting each other. More than when he had to bring his own brother back from the brink of the other side. He appeared before that brother and collapsed before him as the will to even live left him. It was rare for an angel to die and sometimes, they had heard, an angel would pass on and give themselves to fate to be reborn as something else as a trial or just out of boredom from their long years.
Their brother was about to do the same since she had rejected him. So they took action and made it their mission to show her what a mistake she was making. While they all knew that their eldest brother would most certainly get punished, they also didn’t want their brother to leave their side. As he laid on the bed, face near gaunt and pale--they brought her to him. She had told them, after they had made up, what changed her mind was the fact that he spoke his sorrow to her in his sleep.
Never had she seen someone so anguished, someone who had so much power--brought down by something like her. They all reminded her that she was something more to him, even though it wasn’t supposed to be. He woke to her face, slimmer and distraught herself over the turn of events. There was no denying that she still loved him, just the shock of it all nearly driving her away. Later on, she had cut off a piece of her hair and was able to put it in a glass container for him as she promised that with her life-- she would love him, no matter what.
He held that necklace in his fingers again, a lock of hair in the capsule that his brothers had made for him. Hakyeon stared out of the window, right to where the mound was. It was overgrown with green now instead of the fresh brown dirt that had decorated her body when his brothers buried her. It was time.
Each spot held a memory for him and if he were to live on the earth as an immortal, then he couldn’t do it there. The house went up in flames as he left it, leaving with only the simple necklace holding the last thing of her -- dear to his heart.
