Etho didn't want to fight the Wither. He only fought it because Bdubs wanted to.

The minute Bdubs died he ran.

The only reason the Wither was defeated was because Etho found back-up, and even then, he was still insistent on running until the Wither targeted him and the group.

Meanwhile, the Red Lives think Etho killed the Wither all on his own.

The Red Lives think Etho is a literal monster to be feared. All the tales and stories they heard of him now coming down, coming to life to get them all in a swirling vengeance as they watch that health bar drop.

The only person that understood Etho other than a pioneer, a mastermind — a legend — is dead. His history casts a shadow that he will never escape. The empty health bar of the Wither fuels the fire of stories and fears.
