VegasTawan Vs. VegasPete
Ok, back for the first time in a while with KP meta, sparked by @abstractelysium (and I do have to admit that I’ve been missing writing metas so this is a good opportunity).
The contrast between Vegas’s relationship with Tawan and his relationship with Pete is most prominent in the context of control. Vegas craves control over everything, likely due to his father’s abuse and his own feelings of inferiority pushing him to pursue that same reaction in other people, either as a distraction or a way of attaining the dominance he’s never had himself. Manipulation is an outlet for Vegas to deal with his trauma–and he seems to know this. It’s why he’s gotten so good at it; he’s cultivated this skill as a (horrific, ugly, terrible, unjustified) trauma response.
Tawan is one of the many outlets Vegas has for this manipulation. Vegas gains affirmation in putting everyone under his spell. Despite what we were initially led to believe about Tawan, he’s actually quite gullible and malleable. Case in point: Vegas fabricates their entire relationship, convinces Tawan that his feelings are genuine (even when Tawan must know about Vegas’s reputation) and twists it all to his advantage. There’s an argument that Vegas’s intentions when pursuing Tawan were always just to use him for his long-term plans, but I think it goes deeper than that–manipulation is a thrill for Vegas, plus he has the advantage of getting Tawan to take part in his schemes (and screwing with Kinn’s head in the process).
Pete was a similar outlet, at first. Vegas sought to manipulate him, not to make him love him, but to make him submit to him. While his approach is different, the end result is ultimately quite similar for Vegas: the satisfaction of having bent someone to his will. He succeeds, in part, on Pete during the torture episode, but there’s a distinct difference. Vegas is changing too, in a way he never did with Tawan. I don’t think it’s fair to say that it’s solely because Pete resists him for so long–as I’m sure many of Vegas’s victims have held out under torture–but it’s the shred of empathy Pete shows Vegas even when he doesn’t deserve it.
We’ve seen Vegas admit multiple times that he’s a bad guy. He doesn’t attempt to justify his actions beyond their ability to help him reach his own selfish goals. So it seems fair to say that, even if he wasn’t torturing Pete, Vegas doesn’t expect any sort of empathy from anyone. He hasn’t come to expect that because his father never offered it to him. No one has cared for him before, so there’s no reason to think they’ll start now. Especially not now.
Pete resists him, despises him, and feeds right into Vegas’s little game. Until he doesn’t. Until Pete sees the damaged part of Vegas. Then Vegas is fueled even more to break Pete, because Pete’s finally seen the part of him that he wants to keep hidden from everyone else. That, to me, is what indicated that this relationship would be different. Vegas is careful to guard the part of himself that’s abused and hurt and a victim, like all bullies do. Pete sees it, Vegas lashes out at him even harder than before, and what does Pete do? When he has an opportunity to escape, he comes back. Because he sees Vegas’s brokenness, and he doesn’t understand it, but he wants to assuage it in any way that he can.
I’ve done a lot of rambling, but in my mind, the difference is this: Vegas manipulates Tawan and succeeds in this. Vegas tries to manipulate Pete and might have succeeded in it, had Pete not shown him empathy. And Vegas is the victim of empathy, as it’s the one thing he’s been craving from his father but has been without for so many years.
(I hope this answered your question–it’s been a while since I last watched KP, but writing this post was super fun and has gotten me back into it ❤️)

I don't know if you're familiar with Lydia the Bard. She's a YouTube singer who's popular for making songs about princesses as if they were villains or something drove them to villainy.
And she just posted this to announce her next video.

I'm excited to think it might be about Sofia. I mean, the tiara looks similar, doesn't it? Well, that's it. Just wanted to share it.
Everyone always has the idea of dreams being reality. But dreams are a reflection of our reality. So if there was some way to make dreams real, then the reality built from our dreams now affects them. It could all turn into a massive game of telephone as reality itself warps with each itteration
