he hated having to ask for help, especially when it came to magic, but nothing he did seemed to be working. maybe it was because he didn't know what had harmed the snake, or maybe he'd spent so much time trying to blend in with humans that his connection to his magic had temporarily weakened. he didn't know for certain but if it meant helping the creature he'd swallow his pride and turn to a witch.
"dogs and cats only?" he questioned, his tone already a bit dismissive as he stepped into the other's office; the black-tailed rattlesnake coiled around his right arm, weakly clinging to him but showing no signs of distress; it was clear the animal trusted alton. "the healing spells i tried didn't work, but if you don't think you're capable i will find someone else." that was his way of saying please, for the sake of this snake, help me.
"no, i just arrived and i've never seen you before. why would i know where your book is?" he questioned with furrowed brows as he reached across himself with his left hand to gently rub his index finger over the snakes scales to try and soothe it and keep it calm. this was why he normally kept to himself and didn't involve others. it never worked out well for him in the end.

Stolas was a little disheveled as he had misplaced a very specific spell book with a recipe for dealing with poison but the room was a mess and he was panicking. The witch heard some footsteps approach him and he knew he was probably going to have to turn them away. "look I don't mean to be rude, if your asking for healing magic on humans, I'm afraid I cant help you. I just haven't worked that out yet, thats why I mainly work on dogs and cats okay?" Stolas was clearly a little too anxious for his own good. "Have you seen a dark green book anywhere, by chance?" the witch inquired.

huffing out a breath as he was told to give stolas a second, he stood there like a sullen teenager and watched as the other worked to clear off his station. "so not just dogs and cats." he grumbled with a slight roll of his eyes. if this was how he acted around his friends it was no wonder he didn't have many at the moment.
"i can help you look after." while he would have preferred to make sure the snake was alright and take it back home, helping stolas in return felt like a fair enough trade; and how hard could it be to find a book? moving forward, he gently coaxed the weakened rattler off his arm. it was reluctant at first but, eventually, it released it's hold on alton and slid down to coil around itself on the cushioned table. "i noticed it under my back porch five days ago. well, first i noticed a hawk that seemed to be watching my home and i went outside to try and get a better look at it, and that's when i noticed her." he explained as he leaned against the edge of the work surface and nodded down at the rattlesnake.
"i was planning to just... move her out of harms way but she wouldn't let go of my arm. she didn't bite me, she didn't even try to ward me off with her rattler. so i took her inside..." which wasn't the smartest thing to do, his home was still a bit of a mess, but he had a tendency to put animals-- and nature in general-- first. "i set her up with a lamp in my kitchen for warmth and tried to feed her but she never ate anything. she sat on my counter, for five days, and barely budged. she'd only move when i came over to check on her, stretching up to rest her head in my palm, but she hardly moved more than that. i started trying to give her some herbal remedies i learned back home, and i even tried some of the healing spells i was taught in my youth, but-- i don't know. something still isn't right. i think the hawk tried to make a meal out of her and dropped her. i've been trying to keep her comfortable..." but he hated that he'd distanced himself from his roots for so long that now he couldn't actually be of any help.
"can you just... do something already?" he huffed out as his cheeks dusted over with a pink flush as if he were embarrassed he couldn't do it himself. the please was implied.

He was picking things up and looking underneath them, checking higher shelves then his 5 foot 8 stature could see. Why did Stolas always lose things when he needed them? He wanted to pull out his hair slightly. "No I think i can help just give me a second, its been a while since someone has asked for help with a snake. Stolas cleared off his cushion table in the middle of the room and got his bestiary grimoire as he flipped through the pages. "No sorry, I just maybe its right in front of my face and two sets of eyes are better then one. Stolas looked up and smiled trying to comfort the other male. "So first things first, do you know anything that wrong. How long has the snake not been eating, or acting differently? Stuff like that." he grinned. "Give it to me straight Alton."

it was equal parts fascinating and frustrating to see how easily this man was able to get served. he was used to getting what he wanted too but that was from a previous life; before he left home; before he left his family. "mhmm," the vampire hummed under his breath as the other easily pulled him closer to his side and offered him their-- well, his-- drink. "loudest, right." he had been loud too so it definitely wasn't that. "i'm sure it has nothing to do with how pretty you are." it was meant to be a compliment though there was a bit of an edge to his tone. a bit of a sting.
relaxing, softening, a bit he lifted his glass and let it clink against the others in a cheers before taking a sip for himself. it wasn't a top shelf bourbon but the taste was good enough to tide him over for now; to distract him. "thank you, by the way," he added on as he set his drink down on the bar beside him, his tone smoother and less prickly now. "you do that a lot? use your loudness to help out complete strangers that need a drink or am i just lucky?"

It was just a normal night after work for the dragonblood, trying to enjoy the free time he had before hed be back in the station tomorrow. The Pantheon Bar was a place that he had grown a fair liking to since he arrived in New Haven. He was having a few laughs with the men at the bar as they watched the tv's. What Arwyn did notice was a man trying to get some service and not receiving any, but he wasnt going to accept that. "He raised his voice and his hand as he heard the other say his order, not hesitating to help. "I need a bourbon neat, and make it snappy." He requested and within a literal minute of waiting he pulled the other closer to him and offered him his drink. "I have a way of getting what I want, sometimes you just have to be the loudest one in the room. I'm Arwyn by the way." he smiled as he cheers with the glass in the others hand before taking a sip of his drink.

"that's what i'm thinking, maybe the hawk did more damage than i noticed." he agreed. whatever it was he needed it fixed. he couldn't explain it, not really, but in the short few days he was taking care of the snake on his own the elf already felt incredibly attached to her; connected. "i can't keep losing people," he mumbled in frustration. "i--" he huffed out a sigh before trying to correct himself and move past that accidental slip of vulnerability. "i don't want to lose her if we don't have too."
if he felt like giving out compliments he could have commented on how fascinating it was to watch stolas work; or, rather, to watch him flit around the room and find things he needed almost on impulse. however you wanted to describe it, the elf was amused. impressed. grateful even... until he was handed a flute. "why-- why do you have an instrument in here? what could this possibly--" now wasn't the time to question things. magic had a weird way of working, especially with witches, so while this flute didn't seem like it would do anything maybe stolas was onto something. "fine." he grumbled as he took the flute; sounding like a sullen teenager again.

he was not a practiced musician but for the sake of his new animal companion friend he tried to remember the lullaby christopher used to hum under his breath when he thought no one could hear him. it didn't sound right, he wasn't even sure it sounded good, but the notes were decent enough; and the snake didn't seem to mind either. as he played, he noticed she seemed almost entranced by him; paying no mind to stolas or anything the witch was doing to her, only focusing on alton and the flute as he played.
To be honest it had been quite sometime since the veterinarian had seen a snake at work, so he didnt exactly have a direct plan with how this was gonna go. But, he hoped Alton's information about what was going on with the slithery fella was enough to help him out. He quickly grabbed a book from his bookshelf and then started looking through a filing cabinet for something specific. "So were possibly looking at some type of harm from a hawk, okay okay, hmm.." Stolas waved his hand as the book flipped through the pages searching for something that would help him, in this moment of need. "AH HAH" he said as he speedwalked over to the cabinet taking out little trinkets and do-dads until he found what he was looking for. "Alton please trust me, this is gonna seem a little unorthodox.. but humor me." Stolas picked up a flute out the file cabinet as he whispered words into it, blue smoke emitting from his lips onto the instrument. "falbh a chadal a nis" he incantated. "Blow into this, I dont care if you play an actual song or something like happy birthday.. but this should keep our friend from feeling any pain as I figure out whats wrong and we can simply heal her. He waited for the other to start playing before he tried to find any puncture wounds or any heat signatures coming from the animal that was on the table.

"the edge wasn't meant for you." if anything, the undertone of annoyance in his reply had been aimed more at the bartender that seemed intent on ignoring him; he likely ignored his fussing as well. "apologies. let's just say it's been a long day and, well, day's aren't my favorite thing to begin with." he explained as he pulled his lips back, briefly, to show his fangs to help the frankly pale attempt at a joke to land. "now i'm gorgeous? aren't you a sweet talker." he mused. "i'm aware i'm attractive but there is a difference between you and i in that world. i'm just your standard handsome. you? you're the type that tends to be dangerous. hard to say no to," he teased as he gestured down at the drink the other had to order for him.

"i don't look like a jerk? finally." he mused. he used to be. "that's funny," he chuckled to himself though it was really only funny to himself; at one point back home people would have died over helping him or not. "but i've got time and well, you know how to work the bartender, so consider yourself companied. i'm still curious," he added on as he took another sip of his drink before settling into his seat so he was a bit more comfortable as he stayed to talk. "when you say you rescue people daily does that mean your some sort of fire fighter? cop? nurse? or do you just spend a lot of nights at this bar?" the vampire teased; flirted even. "i'm hoping it's the latter because, if we're being honest, you in a uniform? that would just be unfair."
The dragonblood shook his head as the other seemed a little unimpressed and unappreciative. Maybe Arwyn could cut him some slack as he seemed to be having a rough night. "While I appreciate the compliment, I'm getting a sense of backstab.. I mean i did just help you out, gorgeous. And don't count yourself short, you're attractive top." he said before taking another sip from his glass. Arwyn glances over the other enjoying his view for a second. "Hey its no problem, if you keep me company, there's plenty more where that came from." he sighed as he shrugged not really knowing the answer. "You didnt look like a jerk, and I rescue people on the daily. Figured i'd be nice. Not like anyone else was dying to help you out."

he couldn't believe it was working, he was playing horribly, but stolas was giving him the confidence to trust the process; to trust him. for a moment he felt like he was back with christopher, back when he wasn't alone and things just made sense, but thankfully before they settled in for too long and darkened his mood and mind, those ghosts were chased away by the snake's hiss and the witches voice cutting through the mental fog to let him know everything was going to be okay.
dropping the flute without any care for the instrument, he looked down at the snake and held his breath. if stolas was right, if his magic worked, the elf he was definitely taking home her back home and spoiling her, and making her into his official companion. scoffing in disbelief, smiling softly, he stared at the spat up rat bone for a moment as he reached out to scratch the top of her head. the second the snake signaled that she was feeling better, alton was moving around the table and extinguishing any distance between himself and the witch.
wrapping his arms around the other's neck, pulling him into a hug, alton let out a heavy sigh of relief as he squeezed his grip tight around stolas. "you're incredible," he finally said plainly, without hiding his voice or showing reservation for needing help. he meant it. holding onto him for a tick of a second longer, he finally loosened his grip just so he could step back and, caught up in the moment, steal a quick chaste kiss from the other's lips. he was saying thank you. "i owe you for this stolas, really. we both do."

another second slipped by and the elf was letting him go as if nothing had just happened. turning back to face the table, in a strange turn of events the usually stoic look that liked to settle on his features was replaced with a beaming smile. "she already looks worlds better. i need to get this girl a name, and build her an enclosure so i can keep her inside. actually," he questioned, words flying out of his mouth rapid fire, as he looked back over his shoulder at stolas. "do you have any books on magically caring for-- books-- oh, right. you still need help finding that book, don't you?" he was so distracted he'd almost forgot he promised he'd help look for it.
"Listen handsome, we got this. Just do what I say and I'm sure things will go smoothly. Now play." Stolas was happy that the other seemed to not hesitate as Alton really seemed to care about this animal. He could feel the other's energy as he pressed his lips to the flute and blew. He let Alton play for about 4 whole measures before he started to chant in his incantations as he ran his fingers up and down the snakes body searching for any signs of open wounds that the hawk's claws could of caused.
"That's it keep going Alton you're doing great." He nodded as he used some healing magic on the snakes abdomen and then using his fingers ran them up the snake from the tail to his mouth, expelling any bad chakra that was still ailing this snake. The snake softly hissed and spit out a pool of saliva that had a tiny rat bone admist the puddle. "oh would you look at that he left you a surprise." he chuckled. "I think she should be all better now, you can stop playing. she might not want to eat right away but let me know if something else goes wrong. "

it had almost become a ritual at this point. the first few hours of his day, normally four, were spent at the ranch tending to the horses and the cattle, or just cleaning up. by the time he was done it was midday so he'd head into town and grab himself a coffee at my cup runneth over, and maybe a bite to eat. then he'd make his way to the gym for two, or so, hours before heading home for the day to lounge in the sun and rest so he'd have plenty of energy for when he was most active at night.
today was like any other except as he was in line at the cafe, rather than ordering his usual coffee he just stood there. staring. he was so mesmerized that the poor barista asked him at least five times if he was ready to order before he even realized someone was speaking to him.

"sorry, no, i'll--" without bothering to finish his half-hearted excuse and apology for wasting everyone's time, the werecougar slipped out of his place in line and made his way over to what had him so distracted; to who had him so distracted. "just when i was starting to think i'd seen everything new haven had to offer," he had been here for six, or so, months now, "i stumble upon another breathtaking view." his smile was warm, and there was a glint in his eyes, as he moved to lean against a counter; not once taking his eyes off the other.
"here," stepping away from the other and breaking back into the line, leaving a few locals rolling their eyes at him and grumbling under their breath, rowan reaches out for the other, his lips holding onto a small smile, as he nods for the other to join him. "let me get you whatever you want as a welcome to town. i'll tell them you're with me and they'll give you anything," he boasted. "i'll take care of you."

"i'm fine," alton argued with a soft, subtle blush and a dismissive roll of his eyes. honestly he was lost. he had been ever since he lost christopher and even though he found a home here in new haven, even though he was making a life for himself and settling in, he still felt like something was missing. stolas was a good distraction for that. he wouldn't admit it outright, because that would require him being honest about his emotions rather than keeping everyone at an arms length away from him, but the elf did like spending time with him; maybe he was finally starting to come out of his shell. "i just got caught up in the moment. i was concerned, that's all." that was a weak excuse for the way he'd just reacted.

settling against a counter, his shoulder's relaxing with a heavy exhale, the elf looked up at stolas; his eyes settling on the other's lips for a fleeting second before flicking up to meet his gaze. "that's starting to be a trend for you, not having the books on you," he teased, lazily, as he watched the other walk around to stand in front of him. there was a bit of confusion in the elf's eyes as the witch crowded his space, and complained about how short the kiss had been, but it was easily silenced as stolas leaned in and kissed him again; this time the embrace more purposeful and filled with longing.
he only hesitated against the other's lips for a moment before he gave in; his hands reaching up to grip at stolas's face, keeping him close, as he pushed away from the counter and chased after the other's lips with a renewed sense of hunger and his own longing.
If anything he knew this had to do something, all these years of carrying on the Carrow name and he had to help Alton out no matter what he had to do. He couldnt believe of all things that a bone seemed to be stuck in the snakes body of all things. Stolas was just happy that the snake and elf were happy. He knew what it was like being without someone you cared about. He blinked softly as the other wrapped his arms around him in a hug. "It was nothing truly, you helped me out.. man." He blushed as the other was genuinely thanking him and some people acted privileged and went on their way. "Are you sure you're feeling okay? You're just giving out hugs. Maybe I do have to check on you." He teased before whimpering on the fleeting kiss. It had been a while since someone had shown him affection like that.

He was a little shook by the events that had happened over the course of the last few minutes. "I can definitely look into that for you, I do have a whole library I just dont have everything here with me.." He blushed as he walked up the other and caressed his face. "Im not worried about that book anymore but, you kissed me.. but it was too short. Let me really taste it." he softly said as he leaned in without hesitation and kissed the elf longingly.

the witch only had two weaknesses in life. hot alpha's that had a tendency to be jerks and good coffee; well, there was also the exhaustion from his nightmares, people that tried to eat microphones while talking into them, and a whole host of other things worth mentioning but those were a different kind of weakness. "technically i'm not allowed to choose what we hang up," he answered with a sigh as he gave in and turned to fully face the alpha. the two weren't incredibly close, they certainly didn't have matching friendship bracelets or drunken tattoos, but the witch had crossed paths with him a few times before. hence the sour taste in his mouth.
"but for you? why not? who cares if i get in trouble, you've always been super nice to me even though i'm still a little new around here so, sure." he sarcastically answered, his eyes flat, as he took the flyer from jaxon. "i'll make sure to hang it up on the studio window. at the radio station. where i work. where no one can see me."

If there was anything that Jaxon hated it was asking for help. Running his own own business before finding a mate or even really having a support system wasn't the easiest thing to do. He was known to be a party goer and kind of jerk so asking for favors around town didnt seem like the best idea but he needed this more then anything. "Look I know I dont deserve it, but if you could just hang up this flyer at your job or around your house you'd be doing me a solid man." he sighed. "The tattoo parlor brings me a lot of joy and I had to fight hard for it, but having it in the mall isnt the ideal place for customers. So can I just say I owe you one.. or something?" Jaxon inquired.

"i've been in new haven for about five months now, but i've been in this world for closer to seven; or maybe it's eight." he answered with a soft smile. "you're doing incredible for someone that's only been here for a few weeks so, please, don't apologize." the alpha considered himself adaptable. he had help, mind you, but it didn't take him long to learn how to speak english, though he picked up a bit of a drawl from the witch that taught him, and he adjusted fairly quickly to how things worked in this world and this timeline which is why he liked to help the newer arrivals when he could. even though it was a bit easier for him, he understood how confusing everything could be; how terrifying it could be; how lonely it could be.
"you owe me nothing." rowan corrected with a kind smile and a dismissive shake of his head. "--but if you really feel like you need to make it up to me, you could start by giving me your name unless you want me to just call you beautiful. mine's rowan."

once they moved through the line and made their way to the counter to order, rowan smiled and greeted the person working and made small talk with them about some project they were working on; making it clear he came here often and was familiar with the people that worked here. they were kind and patient with rowan, and his guest, and gave them everything they ordered with a smile before sending them off and on their way.
placing his free hand on the small of the other's back, rowan looked down at him with a smile; lingering there for a moment, clearly a bit distracted, before guiding him through the crowd of people to find a table for the two of them to sit. "i know it can be overwhelming, being in a new place like this-- and even a new time. you said you've only been here a few weeks? how are you holding up?"
Things were unlike anything Parker expected they would be, coming from the past. People talked different then he did and he had to learn how to live in this new place. The younger male had looked to Dunkan when he had arrived at New Haven as he was the Merfolk Counselor of the town. He had already learned so much and was even going to set up his own jewelry still soon. However there was one thing that Parker Bermuda had becomed obsessed with more than water, and that was coffee. He was still trying to make ends meet and find himself as the world he new was behind him. His brown eyes met with a crystal blue pair across the way, and wow.. was this man handsome. He cleared his throat trying to prepare himself for social interaction. Lord knows it was going to be a rough trip.

The other was charming and alluring and Parker sat up as he approached looking around to make sure he was the one being addressed. "I could say the same about you. Have you been here long? Its only been a couple weeks with me, so sorry i am if im bad at speaking.. im learning." He blushed as he got up and went into line, a little scared of what the others might think. "This is a big help, thank you sir. I truly owe you one. Please say you'll sit down with me after order?" he asked with a bit of a puppy dog look.
-🐻- Jeremy almost always had something in his mouth. Either a piece of dehydrated meat, or fruit, that he'd made himself, a salty snack, or a toothpick for when he couldn't eat but still needed to sate his oral fixation. Unfortunately today he went without so at the first chance he got, he made his way to the mall's food court to see if there was anything in the deep fried, greased hell that would tide him over until he could get home to make himself something more... sustaining. His smile, which he was completely unaware of himself, faltered as someone started speaking to him. "You sure?" Jeremy turned to look at the other man, thumbs hooked in the belt loops on his jeans. "I don't have anythin' to give you in return. Wouldn't be much of a fair trade."

Arwyn was out and about in the mall's food court eating some food before he perused around. There werent many people nearby but he was worried that his dragon eyes were too big for his dragon stomach. He had already had 2 cheeseburgers and was still struggling to scarf down twenty chicken nuggets. Thats when he saw a man standing there with a pretty decent smile trying to decide what to do. "Hey there dude, yeah you." he chuckled. "I have some extra chicken nuggets if you could finish them for me, id really appreciate it. I'd owe you one.. I just dont want them to go to waste."
