Btw i still have no idea about what I'm going to name this AU.
Anyways, AU time! I guess, so in my mind I made it so that the Gem Steven has is an unactivated gem left behind in the kindergarten's injectors. Basically how it works is that since gems need a large energy source that is found on organic planets and that a Gem during the first stage of the production is only a shell with no information to create the body.
I made it so that Steven's gem was one of those shells, basically placed into the artificial womb Rose created for Steven and he basically grew his umbilical cord around it.
However during Pregnancy a quarter of Rose's power came into contact with Steven’s unactivated gem. Giving him a small amount of his Mama's "magical" abilities.
However this also shrank Rose a bit during it, don't know how much smaller she has gotten but it's definitely more than an inch lol. I believe somewhere between Pearl and Garnet's height.
I hope I explained it in a way that at least someone can understand what I'm yapping about.
