Garden Update #5

I think at this point the updates will be coming further apart, purely for the fact that, plants take time to grow.

I hope you understand and I hope you’ll stick around to see more.

About a 2 weeks ago I drilled some coffee cans to use as planters for my strawberry roots. I made a mess while doing it, but I drilled on the bottom and sides of the cans.

Garden Update #5

My family and I are coffee fiends 😛 it’s a daily ritual we all partake in, so we were able to save the empty cans fast. It’s a good way to recycle too. I have a to admit tho, even now, I’m still a bit worried that I didn’t put enough holes in the cans so it won’t be draining properly, but strawberries like lots of water so we’ll see. The first time I watered the roots they did have actual streams of water coming out of them so, that’s a good sign of drainage.

I’m trying something I’ve never tried before and that’s grow bags. They’re specially craft bags out of breathable, steady material that are evidently becoming a more popular way of gardening produce and flowers. I’ve only ever gardened in the ground before, but the soil where I live had a very high clay content and isn’t good for growing plants, which is why I’m trying grow bags.

I bought them back in March when they happened to be on a sale. I’d been scoping them out and the size I wanted just so happened to be on sale one random day when I checked, so I ordered them on the spot. They are 25 gallons (that’s a lot of fuckin dirt 😵) and they came in a pack of 5. From the little bit I’ve used them so far, they are very well made and drain very well which is exciting.

I filled them with a store-bought dirt mix, then a homemade-compost-wormy-garden mix, and then again with more store-bought dirt. Like I said it was a lot, A LOT of dirt. It took me three days to get them filled, because it was so much dirt to move and it had been really hot outside (I unfortunately have heat intolerance and overheat too easily) but I finally got all my stuff planted about a week ago.

In total, I have Bok Choy, bell peppers, a tomato plant, carrots, radishes, red-yellow-and-white onions, strawberries, basil, and cilantro. Quite the spread, if I do say so myself. Some things I’ve never grown before and some things I have experience with. I had a pepper plant and 2 tomato plants donated to me by a family friend, so that was really nice of them.

It rained last night and this is what my garden looked like this morning.

Garden Update #5

The radishes and onions are already sprouting up nicely. The tomato and pepper plants are also doing well. Also if you rub your fingers on the basil and the cilantro, you can smell it abs it spells so good.

I still don’t have strawberry or carrot sprouts and the Bok Choy is struggling a bit? I can’t tell. Some of them didn’t survive the transplant so I may try to plant some more when the dirt dries out a bit.

This morning I also saved this toad that somehow fazed the wall into my house 🤨 and this is my dog. He doesn’t fancy the rain, but he likes to play in water so he’s a bona-fide weirdo. All creatures were present before and during tending to the garden, so they had to be included in the update 😊

There were also some baby rabbits growing in a burrow very near the garden and the other day they were big enough to leave. They were so cute.

That’s all for now. It’s really just a huge waiting game but I’m really curious to see how the grow bags work out. Some plants I’m worried about, others are doing very well so it is what it is. I’m excited overall tho and happy I have something to put my time into.

Thank you for reading 💜 I’ll be back later
