How to Understand an Artwork: A Brief Guide

I've recently read a book by a French author that promised to teach the reader how to understand a painting.

Art is my special interest. I keep up with contemporary art, attend art fairs etc. I've been to major and minor museums, galleries and churches in Europe and the US. But I feel that there's always room for improvement when it comes to understanding art.

How To Understand An Artwork: A Brief Guide

The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living (1991) by Damien Hirst

I went through this heavy tome full of the author's own convoluted interpretations of artworks. The book taught me nothing about how to interpret and understand a painting on my own. But it did inspire me to create my own guidelines for reading works of art.

How To Understand An Artwork: A Brief Guide

🦋 Why Bother Understanding Art?

Artworks are rich in meaning, symbolism, and emotion. Learning how to read them can enhance your appreciation and understanding of art and, consequently, life. This includes your own life.

The Embarkation for Cythera (1717) by Jean-Antoine Watteau

I find art an incredible place to seek answers to life's questions. I'll show you how you can do this too.

Additionally, this guide contains some of my favorite artworks, old and contemporary.

🦋 1. Observe the Artwork Closely

First Impression: Start by taking in the artwork as a whole. What is your immediate emotional response? What catches your eye first?

Details: Examine the piece in detail. Notice the colors, lines, shapes, textures, and composition. Pay attention to the focal point - where your eye is naturally drawn.

🦋 2. Identify the Subject Matter

Figurative vs. Abstract: Determine if the artwork is representational (depicting recognizable objects or scenes) or abstract (focusing on shapes, colors, and forms without representing something specific).

Iconography: Look for symbols, figures, or objects that might carry specific meanings. For example, a skull might symbolize mortality, while a dove often represents peace.

Lake George (1922–1922) by Georgia O'Keeffe

🦋 3. Consider the Composition

Balance and Symmetry: Notice if the composition is balanced or symmetrical. How do these elements affect the mood or message of the artwork?

Perspective and Space: Observe the use of space. Is there a clear foreground, middle ground, and background? Does the perspective create a sense of depth or flatness?

🦋 4. Analyze the Use of Color

Color Palette: Identify the dominant colors. Are they warm or cool, bright or muted?

Color Symbolism: Consider the emotional or symbolic meanings of colors. For instance, red can signify passion or danger, while blue might evoke calmness or melancholy.

How To Understand An Artwork: A Brief Guide

🦋 5. Explore the Technique and Medium

Brushstrokes and Texture: Look at how the artist applied the paint or medium. Are the brushstrokes smooth or rough? What effect does the texture have on the artwork’s feel?

Medium: Consider the medium used: oil, watercolor, pencil, sculpture, etc. How does the medium influence the artwork’s appearance and impact?

🦋 6. Contextualize the Artwork

Artist's Background: Research the artist’s life, style, and the historical period in which the artwork was created. Understanding the artist’s intent and the era can provide valuable insights.

Cultural and Historical Context: Consider the cultural, social, or political context of the time. How might these factors have influenced the artwork?

How To Understand An Artwork: A Brief Guide

The Parakeet and the Mermaid (1952) by Henri Matisse

🦋 7. Interpret the Meaning

Narrative: If the artwork tells a story, try to piece it together. What is happening in the scene? What might have happened before or after the moment depicted?

Themes and Messages: Reflect on the themes or messages the artwork conveys. Is it making a statement about society, human nature, or a personal experience?

🦋 8. Engage with Your Personal Response

Emotional Reaction: Pay attention to your emotional response. Art can evoke a range of feelings, from joy to discomfort. Your reaction is a key part of the interpretation.

Subjective Interpretation: Remember that interpretation can be personal. Your background, experiences, and emotions can influence how you read an artwork. There’s no single “correct” interpretation.

How To Understand An Artwork: A Brief Guide

I Want My Time With You (2018) by Tracey Emin

🦋 9. Ask Questions

What does this artwork remind you of?

Why did the artist choose this subject or style?

How does this artwork make you feel, and why?

🦋 10. Discuss with Others

The most useful tip I have for you: Share your thoughts and interpretations with others. Discussing different perspectives can deepen your understanding and appreciation of the artwork.

How To Understand An Artwork: A Brief Guide

Reading an artwork is both an intellectual and emotional exercise. It’s about connecting with the piece and the artist, finding meaning, and appreciating the craft.

The more you practice, the more fluent you’ll become in the language of art.

What are some sentences people can say to sabotage me in career, productivity, personal goals, creativity, beauty etc?

Here are some sentences that people might say to undermine your efforts in various areas of your life:

What Are Some Sentences People Can Say To Sabotage Me In Career, Productivity, Personal Goals, Creativity,

💀Career

"Are you sure you're qualified for this job?"

"I heard they're not hiring/promoting right now."

"It's so competitive; you'll never get noticed."

"Maybe you should lower your expectations." (I HATE THIS ONE with a fiery passion)

⚰️Productivity

"You don't need to work so hard; it's not worth it."

"Why are you wasting your time on that?"

"I don’t see how that’s going to benefit you."

"You can always do it later."

💀Personal Goals

"You’ve tried this before and it didn’t work."

"It sounds too ambitious for you."

"What’s the point of this goal anyway?"

"Are you really committed to this?"

⚰️Creativity

"That's a strange idea; no one will understand it."

"I don't think you're creative enough for this."

"Isn't that too risky?"

"It’s been done before; why bother?"

💀Beauty

"Why are you even trying? It doesn’t suit you."

"You're never going to look like that."

"It’s too expensive to keep up with that."

"Beauty isn’t everything; maybe focus on something else."

What Are Some Sentences People Can Say To Sabotage Me In Career, Productivity, Personal Goals, Creativity,

These kinds of statements can be particularly damaging because they often target your self-doubt and fear. This can hinder your progress in various aspects of life.

If you realize someone is sabotaging and manipulating you, the best course of action is distancing yourself from them to protect your peace. The second best is using these same statements against them.

How to counteract sabotage and manipulation attempts?

Educate yourself on everything that's important to you, so that you can make informed choices and decisions.

Learn how to make decisions without dwelling, overthinking etc.

Trust your decisions and don't seek input from others once you've decided.

Being on a femininity/ level up/ hypergamy journey can get lonely. Most of the time, we don't start out with like-minded friends.

A few of us got inspired by 2pretty/ Kelsey and her old dreamgirl sorority to make our own server (as that one is no longer active).

starting a video diary⋆.ೃ࿔*:・☁️

Starting A Video Diary.*:

the concept of a video diary is the same as a normal diary, except your filming instead of writing. think of vlogging, its basically the same thing. video diaries are SO much fun to have, video diaries ;

help u to romanticize ur life

give you something to do (simply a fun project that u can try)

make memories that u can go back to and reminisce on

ESTABLISHING THEME ;

whats the theme of ur video diary gonna be? mine is pink ofc! but ur theme doesn't have to be a color. it can also be an aesthetic, whatever u want basically. its YOUR video diary, its your art.

Starting A Video Diary.*:

WHAT TO FILM ;

film important dates in ur life such as graduation, first date or simply just days that ur doing something fun with ur friends. my video diary is mostly from school and what my high school years are like.

WHAT I LIKE TO DO ;

as a super talkative person, a lot of my video diary entries are just me yapping about whatever flies into my mind. sometimes i'll jot down a couple things i wanna talk about (like my own personal podcast 🎀) but most of the time i just do it freely and its lots of fun to see how my mind wanders sometimes

get ready with me's are so FUN to do omg. i see them ALL over my tiktok and i've grown to love watching them. if u like watching them then you'll probably like making them too. u dont have to post ur video diary or anything btw, a video diary is something personal, its a DIARY after all.

talk about what songs you're listening to these days, what shows ur watching etc

FOOD FOR THOUGHT -> formulate and talk about ur own opinions on difficult topics and whats going on in the world

and what i do the most...

i talk SO much about my crushes 💀 and i admit, that some of the stuff i say is a bit "unhinged" but im just a girl at the end of the day, its fun to look back on how i used to talk or who i used to like

basically all the fun about a video diary is to DO AND SAY WHATEVER U WANT its supposed to be FUN. i hope u enjoy ur video diary ✨

How to study like Rory Gilmore 💗

Rory Gilmore is known for being an academic it girl, these are some habits Rory uses to achieve good grades

How To Study Like Rory Gilmore

💗start your homework/assignments as soon as you get them - in an episode Rory said how she completes her assignments on Friday so she can spend time on Saturday doing extra credit, this shows how Rory does not procrastinate over her assignments, instead she tackles them first so she wont fall behind

💗make use of flashcards - Rory is seen throughout different episodes using flashcards, this is a form of active recall recall which helps her memorise information

💗pay attention in class - Rory does not daydream or get distracted during lessons, instead she is always seen paying attention to the teachers and taking notes

💗ask questions in class - do not feel embarrassed to raise your hand up in lessons even if you feel like you should already know the answer to your question, do not risk your grade by being anxious to raise your hands in class, Rory never felt embarrassed asking questions, so you shouldnt as well !

💗do not let a bad grade hold you back - Rory once got a D in one of her exams, she did feel sad about it however she didnt give up, instead she used this bad grade as an opportunity to find her weakness and improve

thank you for reading, I hope this helps <3

Weekend reset ✩°。⋆⸜ 🎧

Weekend Reset

• Full skincare routine. Face lift massager, pumpkin seed oil, aloe vera mist, retinol eye masks, rose face mask. <333 🌸🪷

• Energy cleansing music. I always enjoy singing bowls and cleansing music to rid me of the week’s stress. (Singing bowls are great, but Sade and Jhené Aiko basically do the same thing too)

• Swimming. Personally, I find water very cleansing and rejuvenating. You can also take a long bath/shower, and fully visualize yourself being cleansed. 🏊‍♀️

• Lots of greens and nutrients + protein. Eating good food makes me feel good, simple as that. I am able to really enjoy and appreciate my food on weekends, which I love. I get to make all of my favourite little treats and nice big meals, love it. 🙏🙏🙏

• Clean room = full declutter session. I can’t stand having a messy room (yet I do, and I usually don’t do anything about it for the whole week). So anywayyyy the weekend is great because I can make sure everything is organized and clean + I feel so good when I declutter.

• Deep meditation and mindfulness exercises. Put on a guided meditation or some simple meditation music and clear your mind. Breathe. It may seem small, but this is a huge act of self love! Taking time out of your busy day to sit and breathe with yourself, amazing. 🧘‍♀️

• Read/write. Writing is an excellent creative outlet. You can let go of all your worries and stresses on paper (love my journal). Or you can write about all the amazing things in your life that make you happy! (All I write about honestly, I can’t help that I love my life so much!)

• Deep stretch and good workout. Your body will thank you for stretching out all your knots and tight muscles. Long workout sessions where you can focus on yourself are the besttttt 💪🤞🏋️‍♀️
