Detectives bond through their ways of supressing their trauma. They are so similar, yet so different.
This conversation is so, so good. Jester and Nott both use escapism to cope with their problems and emotions, Nott through alcohol and Jester through straight avoidance/pushing her bad emotions down. They understand each other on a level, with their desire to keep their families safe and and their separate desire to adventure. They're both learning that there are very severe consequences for their actions (missing traps, the letter to Astrid, etc).
I just very much love them and their relationship.
