im sad and angry now so im just gonna pull out the big guns; if you genuinely ship miles and gwen, you have bad taste in ships and you’re just easily persuaded by music and heteronormativity 😐😐

edit; i rescind the bad taste in ships part, that was rude and unwarranted, but respectfully stand by the second part which i feel like a lot of people arent taking in properly. I mean it more so as a criticism of the ATSV film. I’m sorry if I hurt anyone’s feelings /gen

Spider-Verse hot take

If you ship Gwen and Miles, more power to you, you do you as long as youre not hurting(harassing) anyone

But MAN, it is so disappointing for both the story as a whole and for Gwen’s character that she “falls in love” with the first guy she befriends after swearing off friends ://

If you feel otherwise, more power to you! And with all due respect I don’t wanna hear about it! I came to tumblr to indulge further into my special interest for comfort, not to debate my feelings + opinions on it. I’m here for an echo-chamber that I can vent my feelings about these movies into and meet like-minded people! If you’re not like minded, again, all the power to you! With that disclaimer out of the way, under the keep reading is where I expand upon the previous take.

ITSV sets them up as friends and presents wonderful heartfelt themes about love for friends, family, and especially for father figures. And ATSV continues that! But then also adds in a forced romance? And I mean this so respectfully because I hate arguing with people, but if I see one more person call them a “well written slow burn” (they always call it specifically that) I am going to LOSE MY MIND

Gwen does Miles SO inexplicably dirty in ways that she absolutely did not/had the ability not to! Ignoring her position/pressure in the Spider-Society!

“The creators always say how the romance between them is the heart of the story!!”

Well sorry but I really feel like they did that poorly. Apparently in ITSV they had four hours on the bus to talk and get to know each other? Would have been cool if that was expanded upon even a little! Or shown slightly more than it was cause I truly had no idea!

“Spider-Verse is about fixing the past mistakes of Spider-Man movies!”

Okay, could they have done that without doing the romance so poorly? Again, I wanna really like Gwen as much as other people do and just feel normal but I cannot get over how instantly it feels she goes from “I don’t do friends, but maybe now I do because of Miles!” to “I am deeply in love with Miles and am willing to risk so many things to see him” from what we’re shown. We’re not shown enough! And it makes me so mad! We deserve better!

If Gwen had fallen for a girl, I could forgive all of that because same lol, but nah, they can’t do that 🫠🫠

How do you feel about flowerbyte and ghostflower? (Miles x Margo) and (Miles x Gwen)

Tbh it’s hard for me to be invested in anything to do with Margo because she’s just unfortunately another ATSV character that we see so little of.

Therefore, purely off the fact that I know so little about her, I’m not sure if I can say I actively ship Flowerbyte. In the face of Ghostflower however? I root for Flowerbyte all the way 🫡

We truly do not see enough of Gwen and Miles in my opinion for romance to be established. Friends? Sure! Absolutely! Give me a main character pair of male female friends where no romance happens cause god we don’t have enough media of that! But romance? I wholeheartedly do not buy it, especially on Gwens end. Miles? Sure, he’s a silly teenage boy, I can see him falling easily, but definitely not Gwen.

I swear I was legit just thinking about Ghostflower and why I feel those diehard defenders just get all up in arms about it with anyone breathing the wrong way about it. Now this is me speaking on a whim, but I feel another reason these hardcore fans will do anything to defend the ship is because they don’t consider what Miles went through in the movie as a valid reason for him to not trust Gwen (or Peter really). And so, here they have this ship they THINK can override any concerns and observations about Miles’s arc in the story currently.

Ghostflower becoming canon in the 3rd movie in their head means that Gwen hurting Miles wasn’t such a huge deal and can just be easily glossed over because he ‘would forgive her’. On the flip side, the ship not becoming canon would mean that Miles would at some point express his rightful frustrations about how his so called ‘companions’ treated him and that may cause him to pushback on how he originally viewed Gwen (and Peter).

Some of these shippers don’t understand (or just not care if we’re being honest) the extent of why Miles has a right to be angry about how he was wronged. It’s like they only see those scenes of them swinging through New York and the Clocktower scene and anything after that is just overlooked. And of course this is not to say that Gwen didn’t have her horrible father to deal with prompting her to act on choices influenced due to that, but it’s gets aggravating seeing people trying to discredit the situations Miles got thrown into and act like a simple ‘sorry’ is gonna fix all of that baggage he has to carry on his shoulders or make it seem ‘not that deep’. 😕

Gh0stflower shippers as well as the people generally obsessed with/are diehard Gwen stans truly don’t seem to care about Miles as his own character with agency, and it’s so frustrating to see them decentralize him from HIS OWN MOVIE/STORY! Miles is the main character! Obviously Gwen is a main character too, but this story is mainly about Miles, he’s the main-main character. I’ve had some intereactions where people are really just like “It’s fine because he’s going to forgive her.” Like, do you honestly think of Miles as that weak-willed?

Just this morning I came across some, albeit very well drawn, fan art depicting what Gwen was feeling in the scene where Miguel is lecturing Miles. Like not to hate but I just truly don’t understand that. That scene was about Miles and him learning his father is going to die and that he isn’t allowed to save him. Respectfully, I don’t think Gwens feelings matter at all in this scene? Interesting to think about, absolutely, but idk, it just kinda rubbed me the wrong way :/

I think it’s a little funny when Gwen-stans reference the TV Girl song Daughter of a Cop for Gwen. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good song and definitely apt for Gwen in its title

However, genuinely correct me if I’m wrong, but is that song not describing a girl who uses the position she’s in/the power she has to abandon and betray people? Like…do they not see how it’s kind of a read of their fav…? 😭

Me, very clearly in my bio + my pinned post: I’m anti-Ghostflower and have no intentions of debating anyone over it, I came to tumblr to meet like-minded people and have an echo-chamber and have thought provoking discussions about our grievances with the ship, more power to you if you’re pro-Ghostflower though so long as you don’t harass anyone over it :))

Again, I know there are nice and pleasant Ghostflower shippers out there, I just haven’t interacted with a lot of them! But I have faith they exist!

Tbh I think i just realized my biggest issue with Gwen in spiderverse it’s not just because she’s kinda mean but it’s because SHES THE DEUTERAGONIST! and to me making her the deuteragonist was terrible choice that damaged good majority of the movie when other characters like Peter,Miguel and Ben or even Jessica would’ve been more interesting and had a much better impact on the movie as whole but Gwen to me really doesn’t and it’s why the Gwen scenes felt so unnecessary for me because they feel JUST there instead of a part of the movie

There is small, evil little part of me that wants to see ghostflower become somewhat canon in btsv but they fumble it even harder than they did in atsv, or they just show how ghostflower couldn’t realistically work in the movie, so the rest of us can just sit back knowing we were right the whole time hehe /lh
