working on my coloring, so i took a few panels from JTHM and colored them sense it’s in black and white….two of these are color palettes that i created on my own. while the second one (the red one) was a color palette i liked online..sense i couldn’t think of a good mostly red and pink color palette..

This is my first lyric comic! Just in case, tw for blood, murder, and really unhealthy relationships, I guess?

I’m not sure how well these will load, as this is my first time posting pictures on tumblr, so here’s hoping tumblr doesn’t crunch the quality! If it does, maybe I could try to repost? Idk.

This is a lyric comic using the song “This is love” by Air Traffic Controller. The characters come from the Vargas AU made by @zarla-s, and it is absolutely fantastic! If you want to know more about the AU or the story it is based on, zarla explains it pretty well, so check out their stuff! 

I tend to ramble, so I’m going to put the comic and the rest of my spiel under a read more, for the sake of not making a huge post that’s annoying to scroll past. XD

For the sake of not reposting the chorus multiple times, I put it and the bridge together at the end, but the rest is in order. If anyone is curious about my design choices, feel free to ask. If anyone wants to redraw this better, also feel free! I know it is super messy and amateur-ish, but I was inspired to make this after I saw Zarla’s post mentioning the idea!

This took quite a while to make, and I actually intended to post this yesterday, but I think the day after Christmas is probably close enough. (,^~^)

Small note, I’m sure someone will probably notice similarities between some of my art and ones zarla posted. It’s probably most noticeable with the angel, tbh. But yeah, that was kinda on purpose? I don’t draw much, even though I enjoy it, so I’m not great at things like perspective and proportions. So, I used zarlas art as a reference for poses, trying to get close-ish to the original art without outright tracing. Then once I got more comfortable drawing the characters, I branched out more, like with the dancing scene. (^w^)

Any text in light grey/white is Edgar singing, dark grey is Scri, red is Nny, black is Nny and Scriabin, and for one scene the orange to red gradient is the waste-lock parasite speaking. I hope I did alright and kept it all mostly in character!

(Also, may I suggest “Mr. Fear” by siames as being sung to Edgar by Scriabin? It just feels like it fits.)

Definitely lol with you there. It’s actually bizarre to me when people do walk away with that impression, because the tone of jthm is actually… pretty cynical about the rate of media literacy among people. It DOES actually do a bare minimum amount of explicit pointers and even quite a bit of hand holding specifically for these edgelord types. Johnny literally meets a copycat killer and biggest fan of his and it fills him with nothing but rage and unfathomable disgust.

He constantly condemns all he is and only views his violence as a meaningful solution to society’s problems to the degree that (spoiler?) literal eldritch forces have manipulated him into delusionally believing so, for their own ends. He’s not the most reliable narrator alone, but he is pointed out constantly by his hallucinations AND sane humans for his incoherent hypocrisy in the comics. For all his complete immunity to consequences to his actions, he’s still a miserable, isolated person increasingly warped from the individual he used to be. He pretends he subscribes to a set of justifiable standards and rules to weed out the “worthy victims” from the innocent, and then again, and again, his fits of vitriolic bloodlust are portrayed with all of the senselessness and arbitrary cruelty that they deserve to be viewed through. When challenged on this front, he doesn’t ultimately have any explanation beyond excuses, excuses, constant excuses that he knows are such deep down… when he is lucid enough to actually introspect. He’s a “maniac” by the literal title of the series.

If anything, JTHM could be the ultimate beginner-level literacy test for a reader’s most basic common sense ability to understand the difference between “protagonist” and “role model”.

Between “things that happen/story themes” and “lessons the author is trying to impart on you”.

Between the voice of an unreliable, imperfect main character and the voice of a hero’s objective wisdom.

Between the narrative deconstruction of a flawed character and when an irredeemable monster is being woobified.

My favorite sardonic, back-handed slap in the face on that front was particularly this panel

JTHM/IFS feels like a media literacy and/or personal maturity litmus test. The comic's characters and events are presented with such a combination of absurdity and neutrality...that it opens a lot of room for misinterpretation, depending on where you're at in life. A lot of media actively handholds you towards feeling [X] or [Y] about a character, but Jhonen Vasquez just...doesn't do that [very respectable], and allows the audience to draw their own conclusions. I've seen a fascinating amount of people walk away from JTHM being unquestioningly reverent of Johnny as a character, which like, lol...but in a weird way I kinda like that? Basically, every copy of JTHM is personalized.

To be honest with how much Dib sticks his fat, nosey head into all kinds of business and dark places where it doesn’t belong… if Nny happens to exist on the same plane, I’d be more shocked if he wasn’t once an entire preoccupation of Dib’s in the past, or currently one on the side.

Think about it. A series of unsolved homicides and kidnappings all linked by these two facts:

- Every body found has been completely drained of blood.

- Despite maintaining a very active murder spree and being brazen enough to even massacre several victims in broad daylight, the suspect has never been apprehended or even named. They have what seems only appropriate to call a supernatural advantage at evading the authorities.

Even if dib hasn’t met Johnny C, he definitely knows Johnny is out there. He may be a little misled on what Johnny’s deal is, but he’s got an investigative eye on the case.

As I was drawing the Nightmare Nny cameo from IZ, I had a thought. Does the existence of this Nny in the dimension in Dib's head imply that Dib and Nny have crossed paths? Bc, for the most part, all the horrible creatures in Dib's head had counterparts to his real life, no?

Also, side note, poor Dib. That kid's fucked up

I think it's interesting how Johnny is invincible when he's acting under the Doughboys, yet when he becomes free suddenly he no longer has that protection. Once his actions are solely his own, he must face the consequences of them.

I think it's SO interesting how this works pretty well as a metaphor for accountability. If you're under the influence of something you can argue ur actions aren't your fault- but once you get clean you have to admit they are.

Wacky? I was wacky once. They locked me in a room. A dirty room. A dirty room with doughboys. And doughboys make me wacky.
