Tw: 'Shut Up Mom' Prank, the Chancla.
Masterlist
It was a Friday, you and Gaby were in the living room watching TV, you both had nothing to do since the chores had been already done and there was nothing to really do. You had been sitting on the couch while Gaby was laying on your lap, focused on what was playing on the TV. You were scrolling through your phone, then you came across a video on your phone, it was of a son telling his mom to 'Shut up' to see there dad's reaction. This kind of gave you an idea.
"Gaby?" you called out to your daughter who only hummed. "You wanna play a prank on your daddy?" you asked, then she quickly got up and looked at you with curiosity. "What kind of prank?" she asked, then you showed her the video. She watched it closely, and giggled by the reactions of everyone. "We should!" she said now excitedly. After you had planned how you'll play out the plan, you had the idea to do laundry, you normally did it on the weekend but this time it was for this little prank.
You and Gaby had been waiting for Miguel to get home, you both couldn't help but just imagine how his reaction. Finally your husband had arrived, once you and Gaby had greeted him, was when the plan would be set on action.
Miguel was siting at the dinning room table, helping Gaby with her homework like usual. You had come back from the basement to get the laundry from the dryer. You sat the basket on the coffee table in the livingroom and began to fold the clothes, you and Gaby locked eyes, giving her a wink, to let her know the little sign. Then you got a hold of her Soccer jersey and her shorts, folding them neatly. Here goes nothing.
"Gaby can you go put your soccer clothes away? You got practice tomorrow" you said, trying so hard not to laugh. Gaby looked over at you from her work and went back to writing on her paper. "No Shut up mama" she said as serious as possible. This made Miguel stop at what he was doing and look at her wide eyes. Did she just told you to shut up? He looked over at you, who also had a shocked expression on your face, then back at Gaby.
"What did you say to your mama?" he asked slowly, then Gaby looked at him and repeated what she said to you. "To shut up?" she said, then Miguel reached down to were his foot was and got a hold of his chancla, without hesitation Gaby got up fast and began to run upstairs. Miguel got up from his chair and proceeded to run after her with the chancla in hand. "Gabriella!" he yelled after her.
Gaby squealed as you also followed behind them as fast as you could. " AY MIGUEL!! MIGUEL! IT'S A PRANK!!" You screamed, following them into Gaby's room. Your daughter was on the other side of her bed, laughing as Miguel had his hand with his chancla up, looking purely confused, as his daughter laughed, then he turned back to you who was laughing loudly. "It's a prank Miggy!" you said dying of laugher, then Miguel also began to laugh. "Omg, are you both serious" he said while laughing hard. "We got you!" Gaby said as she continued to laugh. Miguel was going to get you both back for this.

*feral screams, rips eye out*
“mmph” miguel groans as he crawls into bed, slumping on top of your chest after a long week of work. “what’s wrong mig?” you coo, stroking his hair as he holds onto your waist. “work, it was so fucking exhausting today you have no idea.” he mutters. “m’ sorry baby” you say softly, "i know its been tough for you recently". you stay silent for a second, not really knowing the right words to say. “yeah" he says, almost in a defeated tone.
it hurts you to see your hardworking man all stressed and restless. you hated how much he overworked himself, and how he refused to let go of some responsibilities for the sake of his health. you stopped putting up a fight though, as the topic being brought up always ends up nowhere but him saying it's his duty to take care of all of it.
he sighs. "i’m just..” he murmurs against on your chest, “... happy you’re here with me now”. you smile, “me too”
he opens his mouth to say something, but hesitates. “do you think you can…” he says, before stopping himself. “hm?” you ask curiously, raising a brow. “can you hold me?” he asks with a slight rasp in his voice, embarrassed at how needy he sounds. “please?”
you smile and nod, “of course” you say softly, “come here”. he obeys and shifts up beside you against your neck, that burning desire to be closer to you.
you stroke his soft brown hair through your fingertips as his eyes begin to shut, feeling his breath against your neck.
you plant soft kisses on his cheekbones, jaw, and forehead, bathing him in all the love and affection you have to offer because you simply know he needs it right now. he lays peacefully against you, feeling your soft lips against his tender skin.
“my beautiful boy” you coo, stroking his cheek. “mmm, like it when you call me that’” he mumbles. you chuckle softly at his response, his sleepy voice was so cute. “yeah?” you smirk. “mhm”
you caress his back, his muscles loosening up and relaxing. “i’m so proud of you y’know? you work so hard i just, want you to know that” you reassure. “i truly admire you” you say sincerely, watching him smile from your words. “thank you baby” he whispers, gently stroking your arm.
he nuzzles his face against you more, placing hot kisses on your neck. “y’ur so warm” he murmurs, resting his hand on your chest. it’s endearing how vulnerable he gets just by being in your arms. you grin, as your legs tangle up with his under the sheets.
“i love you” he whispers sleepily against you, holding you close. “i love you more, my sweet” you whisper back, kissing his cheek as he drifts off to sleep.

"Can I open my eyes now?"
"No. Ten un poquito de paciencia que ya mero acabo," Miguel tuts from a distance, the sound of wrapping paper scuffling together following. Despite the fact that you'd told him he didn't need to get anything for your birthday, that just spending time with him would be enough, he still insisted on doing so. Even after taking you out to a restaurant of your choosing, not even batting an eye when the waiter brought the check over. (have a little patience that i'm almost done)
"I know you said you didn't want anything but I stopped by that antique store in Queens and found the thing you've been wanting," he told you, stepping close to remove your hands from your eyes. You blinked a couple times to get used to the light in the room, looking down at the gift bag in his hands. Well, at least it wasn't anything too extravagant by the size of it. Or at least you hoped that it wasn't.
"Thank you, but you didn't have to do this. Your comp-"
"Before you say that my company would've been enough, you see me almost every day. Allow me to indulge in you a bit," he cut you off before you had the chance to finish speaking, giving you an innocent enough smile. "Just open it."
You took the gift bag from him, placing it down on your dinner table before starting to take out the sheets of wrapping paper. Even with that, you were trying to be meticulous enough not to rip it. At the bottom of the bag, you could see a white box peeking through. You took the box out with care, your eyes widening when you caught a glimpse of the words printed by the side. It was a vintage black Polaroid camera and a sleek leather photo album.
"Do you like it?" All you could do was nod, going over and wrapping your arms around him. You'd mentioned wanting this camera in passing a couple times, but you weren't expecting to actually get it. It should've been a nearly impossible task given that polaroids had ceased to have any usage with attachable phone printers, the quality of those unmatched. And yet you found yourself wanting this one after watching a movie, imagining all the different scenarios you wanted to use the camera for.
You basically opened the camera in record time, holding into in your hands for a couple seconds just to make sure you weren't dreaming. After the initial excitement passed, you examined the camera to see the different functions that it had and where you could put the film cartridge. You messed around with a couple of the buttons before the back of the camera eventually opened up, an illustration of how to set the cartridge etched inside.
As much as you didn't want to admit it, you'd been so focused on even just trying to acquire the camera that you didn't bother to research exactly just how it is that it worked. You reached over for the box, the manual falling down on the table. You'd barely managed to open it before Miguel grabbed it from your hands, putting it to the side. "We can figure this out by ourselves. It can't possibly be that difficult," he stated, sitting down at the table next to you.
He'd almost wished he hadn't said those words so soon.
The two of you sat there for a couple minutes, trying to figure out how exactly it was that the camera functions worked. You were grateful enough that you had boxes of cartridges to go through, considering that you'd almost went through one in testing this whole thing out. "Go see if that one worked," Miguel pointed over to the one processing on the table, his focus on the camera almost admirable. "This would go by a whole lot easier if you weren't so reluctant to use the manual."
"I refuse. I promise it'll work this time."
"It's almost like manuals were included in the box for situations like this," you muttered under your breath, noticing the subtle scoff he let out.
If the two of you were in any other situation, you might've found this a bit humorous. The two of you struggling with a simple enough camera while he dealt with complicated tech at a super fancy genetics facility and you dealt with cameras that had much more to them. "It did not work," you grumbled, only seeing your reflection peering back at you through the black photograph. If you squinted enough, at least you could see the silhouette of both of your figures. That counted as progress, right?
"Maybe it might be time to reconsider using the manual?" You suggested, your voice raising up a couple octaves as you tried to coax him into the idea.
"We don't need a manual. I'm a genius and you're an expert in cameras. We should be able to figure this out."
He twisted the lens of the camera onto the symbol with the home on it, deciding to test it out since it was the only one left. Miguel pointed at the fruit bowl that the two of you had been using as a practice model, clicking on the button. The whirr of the camera followed, the photograph coming out almost immediately. You slipped it out when it was halfway through, setting it down on the table to wait for it to process. "How's it going at the photography studio? Is your boss still being stingy?"
"It's gotten absurd. I had a client come in this last Monday and he immediately swept in to tell him that I don't have any experience," you couldn't help but feel annoyance when thinking back to the scenario, knowing pretty well that your portfolio was just as good as any of the other interns'. If not, even better.
"How are you supposed to get any experience if he's not giving it to you?"
You gave a small shrug in response, that being the same question that you asked yourself repeatedly. Every opportunity to advance at the studio had been ripped away from you, yet you couldn't bring yourself to quit. Maybe it was fear. Maybe it was just that you'd gotten complacent staying in the same position for a couple years now. "Obviously you didn't ask for my opinion, but I think you should quit if he continues like this," Miguel offered quietly, his hand coming up to your shoulder.
"I'll think about it," you told him after a couple seconds of silence, contemplating his words. You knew he was right, deep down you did know. But what if other companies saw you as the mediocre photographer that this company did? The thought was just too much to handle. You looked over at the photograph once it was finished processing, noticing that the fruit bowl had been perfectly captured. "It worked!" You sounded a little too excited, handing over the photograph for him to examine his work.
"Now, let's take one together," is what you said about two minutes ago.
He ended up sitting down on a chair, one of your arms wrapped around him as the two of you looked into the camera. "How much longer? My cheeks are starting to hurt," you asked him through the smile you were trying so hard to maintain. "Hold on, I'm just trying to find the button," he muttered, the subtle scratch of his nail hitting the camera as he searched for the button. You'd barely heard the click from the button, immediately blinded by the flash shooting directly at the both of you.
Was this how your clients felt? Maybe you'd stop getting on their ass for capturing a majority of their photos with their eyes closed. Realistically you knew you wouldn't though. Seriously, how hard was it for them to keep their eyes open for four seconds? Miguel blinked slowly, putting the camera down on the table. "Pretty sure I just burned my retinas with that one," he muttered, taking the photo out and setting it on a placemat for it to develop. "Ditto."
"Hey, can I keep the photo? I'm thinking of putting it in my wallet," he asked once you were done adorning the blank space with stars and little hearts. You handed the photo over to him when he was done pulling out his wallet, noticing how gentle he was at handling the photo so it wouldn't bend. An array of photos were inside of his wallet, most of them Gabriella. One from when she was a baby to one where she was holding up a diploma for her kinder graduation.
"Te ves tan hermosa. I swear, that camera doesn't do you enough justice," he mused, looking down at the photograph that adorned the back of his wallet. Though he wouldn't be able to deny that the way you smiled in the picture was an image that would stay engrained in his brain for as long as he lived. "Thank you for getting it for me regardless. I know it wasn't much of an easy task," you responded, watching as he went over to fridge. (you look so beautiful)
"Gabriella and I baked you a cake. Well, more like she put the ingredients and mixed it and I just did the heavy work," he told you, bringing the plate with the cake over. You looked over, seeing the cake sprinkled with an ungodly amount of sprinkles and the writing on the frosting a bit crooked. Yet the fact that they'd both taken the time made you heart swell. "It's the prettiest cake I've ever seen. Tell her I said thank you," you gave him a smile, stepping up so he could lean over and light the candles up on the cake.
"Don't smush my head into the cake," you warned him, hovering slightly above the cake. His laughter echoed throughout the apartment, standing across from you with the camera pointed towards you. "Not sure how I would manage that but noted," he responded, putting the camera up to his eye and angling it. "You'd find a way," you muttered, blowing out the candles. You wafted the smoke fumes coming up, starting to take out the candles. "Que lo parta, que lo parta," Miguel chanted in the background when you went to cut the cake.
"Thank you. You've just left me with dessert for the rest of the week," you called out from the kitchen, setting the remaining cake in the fridge. You grabbed your plate from the table, going over to the couch where he'd sat down. "What movie did you end up picking out?" You asked, already expecting it to be some kind of sci-fi movie. Maybe thriller if you were lucky. "Some old romance movie, supposed to be good. La La Land," he answered, taking a bite from his cake. You wiped some of the frosting with your thumb, licking it off afterwards.
"No new movies out in theaters?"
"Well, it's not that. They're just hard to enjoy with all the AI writing and all the CGI. It just doesn't feel like I'm actually watching a movie with real actors, y'know?" If you had to guess, you'd probably say that he was right. Majority of the behind the scenes shots that you've seen for recent movies have just shown robots on set, only around two people actually present. It all just felt so.. emotionless. A repeat of the same movie over and over again just with different characters.
His thumb drew lazy circles on your thigh while Sebastian and Mia were seated at the movie theatre. "I wanted to run something by you, see what you thought about it," he started off, already looking at you when you turned to face him. You really hoped this wasn't the start of a break up speech. "Gabriella's really important to me, as I'm sure you're aware. And now that we're starting to get serious, I'd like for you to meet her," were not the words you were expecting from that sentence, but you weren't upset at them.
The thought of meeting his little girl was something that intrigued you and scared you shitless at the same time. What if she thought you were making some futile attempt to replace her mom? What if she ran you out of the house throwing eggs at you? You took a deep breath, trying to think of the positives. Miguel had done nothing but describe her as well-behaved, there would be no reason for her to act up. You'd just have to reassure her that you wanted to love her, not replace her mother in any form. "I'd love to meet her."
"This defeats the purpose of the movie, y'know?" He pointed out when you sat on his lap, your legs on either sides of his. You wrapped your arms around his neck, your nails gently raking against the curls on the nape of his neck. "Is that a complaint that I'm hearing, Mr. O'Hara?" You whispered against his lips, his chest rumbling as he laughed. "Not at all," he sounded breathless as he spoke, his hands coming down to rest on your hips. He let out a small groan when you leaned in, the taste of frosting lingering on his lips.
You'd barely registered the sound of his phone buzzing in the background, only breaking away from the kiss when he did. He pulled it out of his pocket, letting out a small groan. "It's my ex wife. Just give me a second," he whispered, placing the phone up to his ear. You could make out a couple words from her frantic yelling, nothing that would give you a clue to what was going on though. "I'm not processing the information any better with you yelling in my ear," Miguel sounded much different with his ex wife, a tone he'd never used with you.
After receiving a couple more pieces of context based on what Miguel was telling Dana to do, you were able to decipher that Gabriella was currently running a fever along with a cold. "I'll come by to pick her up along with some medicine, okay?" He'd simply stated after Dana spent around two minutes talking to him. "Yes and groceries too," he added, albeit a bit reluctantly before hanging up the phone. He rubbed a hand over his face, letting out a small resigned sigh. He'd even called off work tomorrow to spend a lazy morning with you.
"I have to go," he pressed a quick kiss to your lips, tapping on the side of your thigh. You got off him, standing up to walk him out the door. "Stay safe. Call me when you get home," you told him before he left, standing on your tippy toes to give him a kiss on the cheek. "I will, I promise. I'll text you the details for next week, okay?" He called out, starting to head down the sidewalk. You waited until he wasn't visible anymore to go back inside, starting to clean up a couple smudges of frosting on the table.
You ended up watching the rest of the movie in the comfort of your couch, lying to yourself about the tears in your eyes. He'd mentioned the movie being somewhat of a romance but he'd forgotten to disclose the important detail- that it was a tragic romance. Just the fact that they had everything that they could've wanted except for each other just made it all the more painful to watch. In order to distract yourself, you pulled your phone out to see if Miguel had texted you. After all, it'd been about thirty minutes since he left.
Maybe he'd forgotten. You tried to assure yourself that maybe it was the last thing on mind given that Gabriella was sick, that he was capable of taking care of himself. There wasn't any way he'd willingly break the promise that he made to you, right? You even tried turning off your phone and toggling with the data button on it to see if was just that your phone hadn't received the message. But upon turning your phone on, you only saw the same three notifications on your screen from a couple hours back.
You'd call him tomorrow. Check up on Gabriella and him on the process. The thought of him ghosting you came to mind, though it didn't last for very long. He'd been very upfront when it came to telling you the things that displeased him in the relationship. He wouldn't just up and leave without an explanation. Plus, the two of you were doing great and he wouldn't have suggested meeting Gabriella if he wanted to break up. Things were good. You just had to keep repeating that until all the worries in your head disappeared.
Things were good.
So why is it that a week later every single one of your phone calls was getting straight to voicemail?
"Hey Miguel, I know that you're busy with work and whatnot but can you just call me back so I know you're not dead?" You were pacing in the middle of your living room, feeling yourself slowly start to unravel with every automated response that you received. "Okay, well I love you. Please just call me back whenever you have the time," you ended the call, staring at the blank screen before testing your luck again for what seemed to be the 70th time.
"This is Miguel O'Hara speaking. Please state your reason for calling and I'll try to get back to you," you practically spoke with the machine, having memorized it after the nth time of hearing it. It was pointless to leave another message, the deep part of your subconscious was aware of that. And yet, you couldn't help yourself. "Hey, Miguel. I'm sorry about all the calls. Can you just tell me if I did something wrong or something instead of ignoring me? Please," you sounded pathetic to your own ears.
You waited until the designated two days passed by until you called the police department in your precinct, inquiring about any missing reports for Miguel. "Look I don't know how many times you want me to check the damn system but for the fourth time, there's no missing persons report filed for a Miguel O'Hara," the officer sounded agitated on the line, though rightfully so. You'd asked him for the fourth time before he snapped. You hung up, trying other PD's and hospitals. Only to get no results.
Maybe it was a stupid way to cope with the fact that he wanted nothing to do with you anymore. But you couldn't help but call him just to be able to hear his voice on the ringtone, even if he did sound apathetic when speaking. That was until a couple weeks passed by, "Number is disconnected or no longer in service," was the response that you'd received instead of the voicemail that you'd gotten so used to. "No, come on," you muttered to yourself, trying to assure yourself it was a mistake. But upon calling again, you quickly realized that it was not.
Even as the years passed by, you found yourself unable to move on from him. It'd gotten to the point where your friends had to step in, staging an emergency intervention under the pretense of going out for drinks one night. As much as you understood their point and their reasons for believing that you were slightly delusional, you still refused to let him go. His clothes still lingered in the back of your closet, the fresh scent of his cologne still present when you pressed your face against it.
You had no idea what happened to him, and that was partially what kept you from moving on. There was no type of closure, no logical reason for him to leave you or any problems in between the two of you. So you stuck to your selfish, hopeless dream. The dream that one day you'd wake up for work and he'd be knocking on the other side of the door, cup of coffee in hand with a croissant bag in the other. Maybe it was the fact that he'd made you feel loved in a relationship. The person that understood you just by your tics and facial expressions.
"Maybe he just.. doesn't want to make this harder for you," your friend hesitated when you'd picked up a newspaper on your way out the subway. Miguel's face had been on the front of the cover, looking as stoic as ever. Even as he was getting an award for a groundbreaking experiment. As a photographer, you could tell that the lighting wasn't flattering on his skin, the color palette washing him out. But still, you tried to push that thought to the side as the reminder that he was still living out there peacefully without you lingered.
"He'll come back," you muttered, though the words didn't sound believable anymore. You could tell your friend wanted to say something else by the skeptical look on their face, but they simply just offered a hug. "Look, when you're ready to move on, I'll be here to help you," they whispered, rubbing your back. The two of you got a couple sideway glances from the others walking down the street, but you couldn't help but want this hug to last longer. You needed some kind of warmth in your life.
The one good thing that had come out of this situation though was that you finally decided to take his advice and quit your job. You'd spent weeks going from studio to studio, rejection getting thrown in your face a couple times. Each rejection started stinging less and less, simply becoming another name on your list. Though a majority of the studios that rejected you was due to a lack of space, giving you plenty of connections to reach out to though. After a while of submitting job applications, a couple of them managed to land.
Which is how you came to work at the studio you're working at now. While it was slightly painful to do, the copious amounts of ass kissing that you did to your superiors helped you move up the ranks rather quickly. Well that and the diversity in your portfolio, the main point that your employer made sure to highlight. The way that you were able to capture objects and people, capturing them in a way that made the subject interesting no matter what it was. It was nothing mediocre. You knew that now.
Along with the job, the studio offered a couple refresher courses that you took full advantage of. While your skill wasn't bad by any means, you were still determined to get better at it. The courses went over from a range of subjects such as color contrasts, the rule of thirds, and different editing programs that didn't mess with the quality of the photos.
You stared at yourself in the mirror, your gaze immediately going to the necklace adorning your neck. You've been trying to talk yourself into finally taking it off for the last couple months, trying to convince yourself that it was necessary to move on. Your alarm clock blared in the background as a reminder that you were about to late for work, but you stayed still. But taking the necklace off would mean that you'd accepted he wouldn't be coming back. Is that something you'd be willing to do?
You brought your hands to the nape of your neck, reaching for the clasp. Just take it off. It would be simple. Stuffing it in the back of your bathroom drawer, never having to look at it again. Never having to be reminded of the nice memories associated with it. You dropped your hand from the clasp, letting out a small groan. "I'll do it tomorrow," it was the same thing you told yourself in the mirror every day, knowing pretty damn well that you weren't going to actually do it.
Even the meaningless distractions and the amount of clothing that you'd bought for yourself after acquiring an actual paying position at the studio did nothing to fix the empty void. Everything just felt so gray, so static. You'd found yourself missing the most minute things of your routine with Miguel, from brushing your teeth together at the sink after he'd just spent the night to the subtle scratch of his stubble after a couple days of not shaving. You missed having someone to talk to about whatever crossed your mind with little fear of judgement. You missed him.
No number of heels or jewelry that you'd splurge on would heal that.
You checked your watch on your way up the elevator, practically hearing the ticking of it as you were reminded you were late. Probably shouldn't have stopped at that new café that just opened up on the corner of your house. Though the taste of the buttery croissant melting in your mouth almost made any complaints coming your way worth it. You stuffed the last piece in your mouth before approaching your office, wiping away any crumbs that lingered on your shirt.
"I have a meeting scheduled here for... Xina?" You read off the calendar on your tablet, looking up for some kind of confirmation. What you hadn't expected to see was Miguel standing there by her side, his hands stuffed in his pockets. A ticked off expression on his face to top off the cake that this morning was turning out to be.
"You're late," the same tone that he'd used with Dana all those years ago, one of agitation and frustration was now the one that he'd used with you. For the amount of times that you spent criticizing the woman over her decisions, you wouldn't have expected for you to get treated the same way.
You really wanted to be annoyed, demand for an explanation. You'd planned out this moment in your head for years, after all. But upon standing in front of him once more, you felt your mouth dry up. It didn't help that he looked more devastatingly handsome than the last time you saw him. His hair had grown a bit, slight curls forming at the nape of his neck. While he wasn't weak by any means when the two of you were together, his muscles were practically close to ripping the stitching in his black button down top.
The gold Virgencita necklace he had did nothing to help out your case. It was only accentuated by the dark fabric. On his wrist, you could notice a couple beaded bracelets. Each with their own sentence in them, ranging from 'best dad' to 'te quiero mucho.' Well that was if you weren't misreading them while they were upside down. Surely the work of his daughter. Though the thing that had caught your attention the most was the gold band around his ring finger, a sign of his commitment to the woman next to him.
You really needed to stop staring before they got any weird vibes from you. You could do that. You could separate your personal feelings from your work.
"It's just a few minutes, Miguel," the woman next to him spoke, the harshness in his glare losing all intensity when she reached over to hold his hand. He let out a small sigh, almost forcing himself to calm down before nodding slightly. You shook both of their hands, willing yourself not to clasp Miguel's fingers within your own. To feel the slight roughness of his calluses that you'd grown used to. That wasn't something you could do anymore.
"Before we started, would any of you all like something to drink? We have tea, water, and some coffee. Though I wouldn't recommend the coffee," you could play the role of a stranger too, a forced smile making its way onto your face. You felt it falter a couple times but you were quick to school your expression back to normal before anyone could notice.
"No, thank you," Xina responded, placing her hands on the table to scoot her chair in. You caught a glimpse of the diamond ring adorning her finger, if that was even a proper name for it. You had an idea Miguel was rich, but you'd never expect him to be THAT rich. The lights reflected off the diamond, a rainbow hue present on the table.
"I'm alright, thanks," Miguel didn't even bother to look at you while he spoke, his attention solely on the woman next to him. His hand reached out to where hers sat, holding it tenderly. His thumb rubbing small circles on the back of her hand. The same way that he used to do to you.
"Excuse me, miss. Do you happen to have any snacks?" The little girl by his side chimed in, the same little girl you'd seen on those photographs from long ago. Well, now she wasn't exactly too little. She did, however, resemble every bit of Miguel. Even more so now than in the photos you had the pleasure of seeing before.
"Mija, if you eat snacks now you won't be hungry for when we go out to eat later."
"I'll still be hungry, I promise!" Even you knew that it was false, but Miguel found himself being unable to deny the little girl anything. He pulled his wallet out, glimpses of those photos from years ago still visible. Tinted yellow from the time that'd passed by. You couldn't help but peer inside as discreetly as you could, hoping to catch a glimpse of the polaroid in the back. He hastily shut his wallet when he caught you staring at it, shoving it deep into the pocket of his jeans.
Something to confirm that you hadn't just imagined the time that you spent together with him all those years ago. The only photos you saw in his wallet though were those of Gabriella and one of him with his fiancée, surely celebrating their engagement by the pose in the picture. Xina sticking her hand out to the camera, a flashing smile on her face as she looked over at the camera. You couldn't help but feel a pang in your chest when you glanced over at Miguel in that photo, his eyes only locked on her.
A look of adoration that you'd only imagined in fairytales. The way that he looked at her like she was the only woman that mattered in the world. You were snapped out of your trance when you heard his wallet thud shut, looking over at Gabriella when she walked over to Miguel instead. He had a five dollar bill sticking out of his hand, keeping it in his grasp while he finished speaking, "Alright, go get yourself a light snack. And get the nice lady something if she wants."
Nice lady.
That's what you were reduced to now? Just as the lady that treated him with basic manners?
"I will, thank you!" Gabriella yelled out from the hall, practically dashing out the door the second he handed her the money. You pushed any lingering thoughts aside, excusing yourself from the table before going after Gabriella. You found her skipping in the hallway on the way to the vending machine, humming a song to herself on the way.
"I didn't actually have to get anything. I just wanted to talk to you," now that came as a surprise. As far as you knew, Gabriella only knew that Miguel was dating someone in the past.
"Me? Why me?"
She reached for the pocket on the front of her overall, taking out a polaroid. You didn't have to look at it to know what it was. And yet you did, a small smile present on your face at the sight of how happy you and Miguel looked once. The words at the bottom had faded away, leaving grey markings in their wake. "I found it in the trash. I thought I should keep it," she told you, your eyes widening slightly. He wouldn't do that, not after he said he'd value it. But what reason would Gabriella have to lie?
"My dad acted strange for a while. He stopped reading me bedtime stories and putting smiley faces on my food," the little girl sounded melancholy as she spoke, reaching up to put the bill in the machine. Now that sounded more like the Miguel that you were accustomed to, not the man that was currently in your office. "But he used to talk nicely about you. How I'd love to spend time with you and get to know you. I'm sorry that we didn't get to that."
"Hey, there's nothing to be sorry for. Sometimes things just happen, y'know?" Even if you yourself knew nothing of what exactly happened, you decided to test that out to reassure her. She gave a small nod in response, pressing a button on the machine before a bag of chips dropped down.
"Thought you weren't hungry."
"Well, I lied to him and it'd be pretty obvious if I showed up empty handed." Smart kid.
"I don't know if we should stick with this photographer. I caught her staring at my wallet a couple seconds too long," you heard Miguel through the thin walls complain to his wife, that same tone of annoyance lingering in his voice. He really couldn't tolerate you, huh.
"She was probably just looking at the photos you have in there, don't stress out about it too much. She's the best we'll find with this time crunch."
The conversation came to a halt when you and Gabriella stepped into the room, the crinkling of chips a stark comparison to the quietness. You went over to your bookcase, grabbing your planning binder before going back to your seat across from them. You flipped over to a clean page, playing with the end of your pen as you tried to distract yourself from the reality of the situation. The same ex who'd practically disappeared from the face of the earth was now facing you. Requiring your services.
"We were wondering if we could establish something like a photo booth where the guests could go to take photos rather than it just being a quinceañera situation," Miguel spoke up, looking directly at you. You were hoping to catch a glimpse of something, just the slightest bit of something that would tell you that you weren't just a stranger to him. Maybe not longing but some sort of recognition? But you received nothing. Not even a form of silent acknowledgment that you were still wearing the damn necklace.
"Alright, we can do that," you scribbled down the notes, just the request making you recall the countless complaints that you've had to deal with about a couple of your interns. That the guests couldn't even get a spoonful in without having some fear that a camera would instantly flash in their eyes. "And how would you like the arrangement to be for the both of you? Photos straight out of the chapel and throughout the ceremony or just the photo booth?"
"Well for the two of us, we'd like some photos of us outside of the chapel." Alright, all you had to do was arrange the photo booth before you made your way over to the church to take their photographs. That sounded manageable. You annotated the time that the ceremony and reception would start, writing down a couple possibilities for the time required. You were getting paid by the hour, after all.
"I'd prefer if you could make it something low light. My eyes get sensitive with bright lights," Miguel spoke up, waiting for you to write down the notes before leaning back in his chair. You'd never heard him complain about something like that when you used him as the muse for your photos, but a lot of things were different about him now. You didn't know him anymore. A fact that you had to resign to yourself to.
"How'd the two of you meet, if you don't mind me asking?" It was clear that they mind the question. Silence lingered in the room, both of their stares equally judging. Think. Think. Think. What would be a reasonable excuse for letting your nosiness get in the way of remaining professional?
"I was just wondering since we could set up the booth with something reminiscent of that moment. A couple coffee shaped figures if it was a coffee shop. Books if it was a library. Like a cute little easter egg," you almost had to commend yourself for coming up with that lie so fast. You looked over at Gabriella, seeing her give you a thumbs up on the middle of her trying to watch a YouTube video. Okay, maybe the situation had been salvaged.
"We used to be friends, though we hadn't contacted each other in a while. Before she came into my life as my fiancée, my life just felt very empty. She brought me purpose and a reason to come back home every night," you gripped the pen in your hands as he spoke, almost surprised that the glass didn't shatter. Empty? Empty? Were you just a piece of chopped liver? Maybe you'd gone crazy for real this time around and just imagined yourself dating him. Yeah.
Just coincidentally dated someone who looked exactly like him. You'd be lucky if you didn't go mad by the end of this meeting if your thoughts continued to stray in this direction. You could've sworn you heard a slight crack in the pen you were holding, forcibly loosening your grip on it even though it was the only thing anchoring you down. Just take a couple deep breaths. Go to your happy place. Wait no. That wouldn't work if your happy place was in a beach in the Bahamas with Miguel, right?
Nope. Definitely not.
"Well he comes home most of the time, but y'know how it is with geneticists," Xina remarked, her gaze going over to the pen in your hand before going back up to your face.
"You have no idea," you found yourself muttering, unable to stop the words from coming out. You didn't even have to look over at Gabriella this time to know that she was subtly giving you a thumbs down.
"I'm sorry?"
"Forget it, just a stupid comment." Though she seemed skeptical towards the comment, she decided to leave it be for now.
The rest of the meeting flowed very smoothly, a majority of the conversation staying on work related topics. The other portions had been Xina talking about just how lucky she was to get you as a photographer, how thankful she was for Miguel. "He's just been so supportive throughout this whole process, letting me take reigns of the planning," she'd told you, her face gleaming as she spoke of him. An expression similar to contentment washed over Miguel's face as he watched speak, a hint of a smile on his lips.
"Alright, that'll be all. Thank you for coming to meet with me today," you told the both of them once the plans had been set into stone. You rose up from your seat, the three of them following suit.
"Thank you, it was very nice to meet you," Xina extended her hand out towards you, a polite smile on her face. You shook her hand, returning the pleasantries with as much cheerfulness as you could muster. Which wasn't that much, now that you think about it. But she hadn't noticed anything too strange about your expression so that was slightly reassuring. She and Gabriella left the room, leaving you and Miguel together.
"It was nice meeting you, Mr. O'Hara. My apologies for being late," to which he simply gave a curt nod before making his way to the exit. You went to fix your binder and pens, looking up only when you hadn't heard the click of the door.
Before he had the chance to step out, he stopped and stood by the doorstep to turn around and look at you. You were stuck in between wanting to bask in his presence for just a little bit longer and wanting him to leave. Why couldn't he just leave with the new family he was forming and leave you out of it? He looked like he was trying to see if he recognized you, his brows furrowed slightly in concentration. "I'm sorry if this comes off as a weird question, but have we met before? You seem familiar."
You almost wanted to laugh at the situation. How funny it was that the man you'd swore was the one you were probably gonna end up getting married to was the same one who didn't recognize you now? The same one that spent hours on his knees, devoting himself to worshipping and memorizing every feature of your body. That loved every aspect of yourself, even the aspects that you once thought were unlovable.
While seeing him now was the epitome of painful, knowing that he hadn't even bothered to consider you while he'd gone off to start a new life, this was what you needed to move on. The hope that you once had of him coming home, holding you close to his chest with countless apologies slowly dwindled down throughout this meet before extinguishing completely. You had slowly come to accept how stupid it was to wait for him.
It would've been easy to say yes, to tell him that you were his ex-girlfriend. But the image of the small smiles that he shot at Xina throughout the meeting still stuck in your head, making you consider that decision longer than you should've. You looked up from your notes, realizing that he was still waiting for your answer. After some hesitation, you eventually decided on, "No, I don't believe we've met before. You have me confused with someone else."

An imposter.
He was reminded of that fact every day, waking up in bed sheets that didn't belong to him next to a woman who he was sure wouldn't stay with him if she knew the truth. He was reminded of the fact when he got up, looking at his reflection in the mirror. Past all the similarities, even he could tell that he was a subpar replacement. But he'd be damned if he didn't at least make an attempt to try to perfect this persona.
His very atoms would defy the possibility of being in this room if it weren't for the bracelet that adorned his wrist. Warnings from his assistant echoed throughout his mind, the hologram appearing every day to alert him of the danger that continued with every single millisecond that passed. The instability of the universe and all the other things that he usually tuned out by the third minute before he shooed her away.
How long did he need to fake this for this place to finally start to feel like home?
He was a jagged piece in this puzzle, forcibly trying to push himself in to fit. Forcibly forging his way into this universe as if that would make him be a part of it. Forcing himself into a family that wasn't originally meant for him to enjoy. But he wouldn't stop until his puzzle piece eventually got damaged from how hard he was trying or until the puzzle itself would fall apart at the seams.
Late nights spent reviewing a digital case file, going through every minute detail of this man's life. What time he got up to use the bathroom at work, how many times, what kind of toothpaste he used. Anything and everything that he needed to become the perfect image of this Miguel O'Hara. He'd even spent nights working on his inflection when he spoke, every inch of him molded into the perfect image.
Was this all worth it? Putting this amount of work into the image of having a perfect life while simultaneously having that nagging worry in the back of his mind that it could just crumble into pieces? Doing all this with no regard towards what type of potential consequences this could bring?
The logical part of himself knew the answer clear as day—no. The instability of the universe was carefully woven by a thin line, and even just moving a speck of dust an inch where it didn't belong was enough to destroy the equilibrium. His selfishness could cost this universe grave consequences, consequences that could very well signify the end of this timeline. It was all about probability and educated estimates, though.
Then again, he had to remind himself that if he wasn't meant to do this then the opportunity wouldn't have appeared to him in a silver platter. He was reviewing some old case files at his office in HQ, monitoring a Morbius variant that stumbled into the wrong universe. Typical Friday evening activity. He had to will himself not to fall asleep standing up, gulping half of his body weight in coffee. His attention was pried away from the monitors when he heard an alarm go off.
One of his variants had died.
He itched to check the file, his responsibility to the Society at the backend of his mind in that moment. Just for a couple seconds. Morbius was sleeping, anyways. Not like he'd wake up in the couple seconds that he looked at the file. He opened up the summary of that Miguel's universe, the digitalized video on screen showing his variant getting shot. One of the more avoidable deaths, if he had to offer his opinion on it. Truly. All the gunmen were asking for was his wallet and valuables.
Not that he had any time to linger on the thought. He needed to get back to checking up on Morbius as soon as possible. Clicking on the details from the universe, he went every connection that his variant had. Pretty much the same that he did, a crappy relationship with his mother and an even shittier relationship with his 'father.' The only thing that did differ, was that this Miguel had managed to find some sort of family with his daughter. One of the things he'd found himself longing for, but would never be selfish to go after.
Much like any other personal relationship.
Leave the case alone.
It was a case that altered his judgement. He knew better than anyone to get involved in cases that would prove to be too personal. Technically there was nothing to address, considering that his variant wasn't anything special. It wasn't in his timeline to become a Spider-Man, ever. It was like just another simple civilian had died. He should treat it as such. Remove his personal feelings from this. Not interact. He could do that. He'd given so much for the Society already.
He didn't give himself the chance to think twice before entering the coordinates into his gizmo, tapping the teleportation button quickly before he thought better of it.
It had all been so simple. Almost like this was his calling. He'd managed to get to the crime scene before the authorities showed up, pocketing his variant's personal belongings as if they were his own. As far as he was concerned, there was no actual proof of this corpse being Miguel O'Hara. Even if he wanted to go back, he couldn't. What would he even say to explain himself if the police were to show up? That this was all some sort of twisted fever dream? No. He needed to seize this opportunity.
He snuck around the streets of Nueva York, trying not to get caught carrying a body around. While he knew that the police wasn't exactly the brightest, even they wouldn't be able to look past this suspicious behavior. He needed to dispose the body somewhere it wouldn't be easily found. Last thing he needed was having the police come over to his house and find him standing there. But where? All the options in his brain sounded so cliché when he went over them.
Underground? As dumb as the police dogs were, he knew that even they would be able to identify the smell of rotting flesh.
Frame it as a suicide? No. The idiot had gotten himself shot in the chest trying to be a hero.
The Hudson? As far fetched as the idea seemed to be, it seemed to be the only logical answer. Maybe the fish would eat him alive and he wouldn't have to worry about this resurfacing in the future. Wishful thinking, he knew. But at least he was certain that it would take a couple years for this to get to light.
As comfortable as Miguel was in this universe, he made a point to go back to his universe when Gabriella and Xina weren't around. Just to see how it was doing. A part of him had expected it to fall apart at the seams without having Spider-Man arrived, but it seemed just the same. It was almost like he'd never left. Though, he wasn't sure why he'd thought that. Throughout his time as Spider-Man, he was constantly hearing retorts about how he failed to compare to the original Peter Parker that passed away. That he would never be able to carry the mantle.
To be completely honest, the idea of romance wasn't exactly one he was completely interested in when he first arrived. Being Spider-Man back in his universe proved time and time again that love just wasn't something that intertwined nicely with his routine. From the impending danger that they would constantly have to face to the long hours that he would spend on patrol. But there was no role of Spider-Man here for him to fulfill. Peter Parker was still swinging around in the streets, monitoring the streets.
His life was.. unfulfilling when he wasn't with Gabriella. Which happened to be the eight dreadful hours that he was stuck at Alchemax. "Hey, do you want to go on a date?" He'd read enough about Xina in Miguel's file to know that they were close friends, figuring this request wouldn't be too awkward. "What happened to that relationship you were in?" She asked, focusing on screwing in one of the bolts in the machine she was toying with. Relationship?
The only semblance of a relationship that Miguel saw from his variant was that photograph he'd tossed a couple weeks back. Overall, nothing that he seemed too important. While it seemed like a fun fling from the couple scenes he'd seen, it wouldn't go anywhere serious. "We broke up, our relationship became stale," he was surprised by how easy the lie had slipped out. Better than telling her that his variant had left you without a word before he took his place. Xina gave him a warning look, letting out a small sigh.
"Look, Miguel. You're one of the closest friends I have here and I'd rather not jeopardize it over some fleeting thing," Xina told him, setting down the screwdriver she had in hand. "It doesn't have to be a fleeting thing, I swear. Just give me a chance," he told her, handing her the next tool that she needed. He enjoyed spending time with her like this. It was simple. She knew when he needed to be alone and didn't prod for any extra conversation, a sense of silent understanding between the two. "Okay. One date."
"Don't worry, I get it. Just tell me when you plan on staying late at work and we can plan around it," she gave him the patience throughout countless missed date that he'd never received from his previous partners. Not only that, but Xina had managed to fit so perfectly in his little family, He could see the happiness in Gabriella's eyes when the two of them stood at the stands during her soccer matches, cheering louder than the other parents. He could see himself doing this for the long term. That one date led to them getting engaged a couple years later.
The wedding planning had been something he'd left up to Gabriella and Xina. Considering that if it was up to him, he would've preferred to just have an array of grey, black, and white. He accompanied her to a couple of the events, such as getting her dress fitted or picking out the wedding cake and food arrangements. Anything that would make this process less stressful for her. He could've sworn that he saw her falling asleep in the bathroom for five minutes before she went back to searching for flower arrangements.
Miguel knew he should've come up with an excuse when he finally clicked on your LinkedIn profile, recognizing your photo to the one he'd thrown all those years ago. Tell Xina that he didn't think the reviews were that good. That your reputation was complete garbage, even if he couldn't confirm that if she asked for some kind of evidence. But a part of him was curious enough to go through with it. You looked.. very average from your profile. Nothing too interesting on your social media.
Just a couple photos from a couple shoots you'd done and a couple selfies—nothing too captivating. And yet, you had this universe's version of himself wrapped around your finger. Pictures of the two of you took up the majority of the gallery on his old phone, with a picture of Gabriella here and there. He wanted to know why. But after sessions of advanced research, from going through the college you enrolled in to checking the video footage from a couple dates that you'd gone with this Miguel, he couldn't find anything.
He couldn't see himself making the same effort that this Miguel had made. At least not for someone he deemed so plain. Someone who clearly had no concept of time, either. He checked the time on his watch, watching each passing second that you weren't in the room. A full minute had passed until you stepped in the room, seemingly out of breath. If he had to guess by the way that your chest was heaving anyways. He could see that small flicker of recognition in your gaze, not that he could reciprocate it even if he wanted to.
Gross. He could see the bread crumbs you'd hastily tried to wipe off before stepping foot into the room, a couple lingering by the corners of your mouth. Maybe he was looking too hard into this. Xina didn't seem to notice anything and neither did Gabriella. Was he purposely looking for reasons to dislike you? To get some kind of validation that he was right in not even bothering to try to keep the facade going with you? No, that couldn't be the issue. He was treating you the same way that he would treat anyone else. Or at least, that's what he kept telling himself.
You tried to be discreet, he could tell at least that much. But your face completely betrayed the façade that you were trying to paint. The lingering glances combined with the tinge of anger and disbelief were painted across your face every time you looked at him. He could see that you were desperate to get some kind of recognition, that you hadn't just imagined the events prior to the accident. He wouldn't give in to it, though. His duty wasn't to reassure a stranger, it was to keep Gabriella and his fiancée happy.
"You have me confused with someone else." That was not on the list of things he thought you'd say. A part of him had expected you to grovel at his feet, to beg for some kind of explanation. He could see the mask of indifference threatening to slip with every second that he spent in the room, strangely wanting to test out just how long you would keep it up. "I'm sorry, seeing so many faces has made me lose track," he gave you a tight lipped smile, unable to help himself from making a petty remark.
Your lips twitched, almost like that fake smile you'd plastered was seconds away from melting away. You quickly schooled your expression back to normal, though. Impressive. You seemed determined not to let him know that he affected you. He almost had to admire you for that. He left the room without another word, following behind Xina and Gabriella. Surely, she would make the decision to pick out someone else after those weird displays you'd shown throughout the meeting. Or at least, he could only hope so.
"Well, she seemed nice," Xina told him when the three had made their way out of the building, her arm wrapped around his own. He held Gabriella's hand tightly, making sure that she was keeping pace up with them. "You didn't find her weird or anything like that?" Miguel asked her, an accusatory tone to his voice as he spoke. He was ready to explain how he'd come to that conclusion but Xina simply just looked at him, her brows furrowed.
"Do you know her or something? You seem very determined to find a reason to dislike her."
"No, I don't know her. All I'm saying is that she showed up late and when she did show up, she showed up with crumbs all over her shirt. And she made these weird comments," Miguel pointed out every single one of his complaints, opening the door for his two ladies when they arrived at the restaurant.
"Just give her a chance, Miguel. Her portfolio's not all that bad," Xina whispered as a hostess came over to greet them. She sounded exasperated. He couldn't blame her though, not when she'd spent these last few couple weeks going from place to place to sort out the last couple details for the ceremony. He shouldn't have been causing her more stress, he knew that. But yet.. he wanted to reassure her that they didn't have to stick with last resorts.
"You know I'd get another photographer, mamita. The best in the country if that's what you wanted," Miguel pulled her chair back, doing the same for Gabriella before going over to take a seat across from them. He was starting to sound irrational, pulling at any strings he could find. He wanted this less than you did, if that was somehow possible.
The conversation didn't go much further than that considering that Xina had started talking to Gabriella, asking how many of her friends had confirmed to go. Conversation about how the food was. Everything other than the meeting at the photography studio. Miguel didn’t want to risk pissing her off, eating his food and offering his insight on a couple topics that he knew of.
The first thing that you did upon getting back home was finally taking off that necklace, the weight of it suddenly becoming too much to bear. The one thing that differed from your plans was that you hadn't buried in the back of your cabinets, you ended up tossing it in the garbage disposal. The sounds of metal grinding echoed throughout your apartment, a couple pieces falling onto the sink. As if even the necklace was sticking to those last semblances of hope.
You really needed to get over him by now. Finding stupid metaphors in getting rid of a necklace wasn't doing you any favors.
Soon after that came removing the clothes from the back of your closet, throwing them in a box. You didn't spare a second to think about the sentimental value that each of these articles held, because you knew that if you did, you'd end up regretting your decision and you'd just end up hanging them back up again. The clothes themselves only took up about half the box, the other half was full of mementos that he'd gotten for you throughout the relationship. The Polaroid camera that ended up breaking after four uses.
A stuffed shark he'd gotten for you during a trip to the aquarium. Ticket stubs to a movie the two of you spent a majority of making out for. Notes that he'd written to you, describing everything that he couldn't bring himself to say. Anything and everything that served as a bitter reminder of what used to be. They were just material items, you knew that. But as you stood in front of the garbage dumpster, attempting not to gag at the rancid smell, a rush of memories came. You just needed to throw this away. Start getting rid of him from your life bits by bits.
You just had to see him one more time, in a couple months before he left your life once more. You hadn't talked to him since that day, not that he bothered to reach out anyways. You kept your conversations strictly reserved for Xina, going to her for some last minute confirmations and ideas that struck you at the middle of the night. Just one afternoon of having to see him. Not even a full day, just a couple hours. It couldn't be that hard, right?
You'd set up about 15 different alarms for the day of the wedding shoot, having already dozed through the first eight. You really wish you would've told Xina you just couldn't do the shoot, return her deposit. The last thing that you wanted to see was the man you loved getting married to someone else, looking at her the same way that he used to do to you. If not, even more adoringly. With a warmth that he only seemed to reserve for her and her alone. But you figured it wouldn't professional to cancel two hours before you had to show up.
With that thought in mind, you reluctantly got yourself out of bed and into the shower. The cold water offered a nice distraction, your focus on freezing your ass off instead of the ceremony. Why couldn't he have given you the basic decency of some closure? You scrubbed your body wash into your skin, almost hoping that if you scrubbed enough that the memories wouldn't be there anymore. That this would just be a normal wedding you're doing a shoot for. Why did he get to be happy after doing you so wrong?
After condemning you to a lifetime of missing his company. Scrub. For giving you that little slice of domesticity and understanding before ripping it away without giving you a chance to fight for it. Scrub. Scrub. You weren't sure when the warm tears streaking down your face started to mix in with the cold stream of the shower. It hurt. It hurt crying over someone who obviously didn't care. It hurt to still be in love with him. To even think about him. To not be able to hate him no matter how much you wanted to. At least that would be better than this meaningless longing.
You were jogging down the street to catch up to the subway, otherwise you'd have to wait about an hour for the others to come by before you landed on your butt. "What the-" You were cut off, looking over at the tree that mysteriously appeared right in front of you. That wasn't there before, was it? It didn't even look like one of the trees situated in Central Park. You looked around to see if anyone had noticed the sudden abnormality, but you were only met with cold indifference instead.
You were running late. The last thing you needed was for Miguel to think you were unreliable after the first encounter at your office. But.. your curiosity was peaked. You stepped closer to the tree, tentatively reaching out for it. Before your fingertips could even graze the surface of the bark, the tree glitched into a variation of different colors before turning into something else completely. A mailing box. There was no way that no one could've missed that, right?
And yet again, you weren't really sure why you were expecting a different reaction than the one you'd gotten earlier. You resumed jogging down the street, almost tripping over your camera equipment when you made your way down the stairs to the subway. Please. Please. Please. You were silently begging with a train, hoping that it wouldn't leave just yet. Your footsteps pounded against the concrete as you made the final stretch over to the train, a stark comparison to the others leisurely walking while scrolling through their phone.
"Train C is now departing," the automated voice called out, the doors starting to shut. You quickly ran over, knocking on the doors before they had the chance to shut completely. You gave the conductor your best pleading look when they turned to glare at you, seeing their resolve crumble within just a couple seconds. You stepped back, almost expecting for the train to take off but surprisingly, the doors opened. You stepped inside, getting your Metro card out from your pocket.
"Thank you," you whispered over to the conductor, tapping your card against the reader. Well, at least you still had enough money in your card for the ride. "Don't let it happen again," they bit back, their tone almost guaranteeing that you would indeed try not to let shapeshifting trees distract you next time.
You took a seat at one of the available seats in the near back, taking a couple seconds to catch your breath after nearly running for a block. A couple people came in shortly after you, muttering their own apologies to the driver before sitting down on the remaining seats available. The train pulled out of the station, starting to make its designated route down the train tracks.
You tried not to think about one of the conversations you'd had with Miguel—a talk about what a wedding would look like between the two of you.
"You see yourself getting married with me?" You asked him, your fingers gently running through his hair. Piojitos, as he'd called them. Miguel closed his eyes, completely in a state of bliss as he leaned against your stomach. "Well, yeah. I thought it was pretty obvious by now," he told you, his fingers making small circles on your thigh. You felt a small shiver crawl up your spine at the sensation of his nails.
"It's not obvious until I see the ring."
"Touché. But yes, I do see myself getting married with you. Coming home to you, spending my afternoons with you and Gabriella."
"What would be your ideal wedding?"
He let out a small hum, considering the question as his movements on your thigh halted for a moment. "Well, I've already had my version of what I thought was my ideal wedding with Dana. We had this grand venue with a majority of her friends and a couple of my co-workers. And I still wasn't happy by the end of it. I loved her, obviously, but it still felt like a mistake."
"Anyways, this is all just a long way to say that I don't really care about the venue or what type of wedding it is, as long as it's with you," he finished up, his fingers resuming their movements on your bare thigh. "For the record, I also think that my ideal wedding would just to have you involved in it."
You scrolled through your phone as the train started to move, your camera equipment tucked away under your seat. The news from the day popped up on your screen and you weren't sure if it was the boredom that inclined you to click on it or if it was just a gut feeling telling you to do so. Either way, you did. You were met with the reports of the stock market, a couple robberies and kidnappings. The usual stuff. You got to the bottom of the news article, certain that your eyes were deceiving you.
Dead man found in the Hudson River—more on page 3.
The image shown underneath showed a corpse of a rotting man, flies sticking to the holes on his skin. It couldn't be him. But even so, you recognized that grey sweater that he'd worn more often than not during your dates. The grey sweater he lent you when you were cold coming back home from the park. It didn't make sense. Then again, nothing made sense. Trees were starting to appear places that they shouldn't be. Articles about your ex boyfriend being dead were being published. You pinched your arm in an attempt to wake up from this cruel dream.
Instead of getting awakened into some sort of fantasy land of your current reality, you were only left to stare at the nail indents on your arm. You saw him, you know you did. Miguel had the same name and everything. The same appearance, with a couple minor changes. But you couldn't deny who it was in that photograph. You were starting to drive yourself mad with every thought that ran in your head, almost missing the stop you had to get off on. How would you be able to face this Miguel after that article?
Well, it’s not like you had another option now.
Half of your interns had shown up by the time you got there, most of them busy at work with setting up the photo booth. Well, finishing with setting it up. You wouldn't be surprised if they showed up just an hour ahead of time just to maximize the time they had to impress you. You set down the coffees you'd gotten for them on one of the tables, watching as they all scrambled to get a cup. You couldn't exactly judge them if their pay was anything of what you had to endure. They took sips from their cups, all while simultaneously trying to arrange a low-lighting environment per Miguel's request.
You looked from a distance as a white limousine pulled up to the park, Xina's white dress trailing behind her as she walked. A man that you only recognized by pictures, Gabriel, stepped out of the car and walked over to help her with the train. Miguel walked next to Xina, their hands intertwined as they made their way into the venue. Gabriella walked over to you, taking a seat on one of the available chairs with her father's phone in her hand.
"I thought you might've stopped the wedding. Went up there like in the novelas and announced your true love for him," she noted, not even bothering to greet you first. Direct, just like her father. You took a seat next to her, letting out a small chuckle.
"Should you be watching novelas at this age?"
"They're very educational. Though I don't get how why the women get done so dirty and then continue to go back," one of the common issues you'd noted as well. There was one of a woman getting her dog ran over and she still married the bastard.
"Foolish notions of love. And it makes for good television," you gave a small shrug, looking over at the parking lot as more cars started to pull up. "But no, I wasn't planning on stopping your father's wedding. He deserves the chance to be happy."
Even if you were unsure that it was him. You couldn't back up any of the theories you had in mind, only being able to rationalize them with your gut instinct. And though you weren't a researcher like Miguel was, even you knew that wasn't enough to substantiate your claims. "Even if you're not happy?" Gabriella spoke up after a while, her brown eyes boring into your own. You hesitated on answering, your voice wavering as you spoke, "Yeah, even if I'm not happy. He deserves that much."
The image was still burned into the back of your mind, the striking similarity between the man that was just found and the one standing in front of you with a look of impatience. "What seems to the problem? Just take the picture, please," he grunted out after a couple more seconds, your finger hovering above the button. The flash of the camera followed after, a smile taking over the original look of irritation. It wasn't him, it couldn't be. It couldn't be that man from the article. Though the more that you thought about it, the more that the details lined up.
You'd tried to convince yourself that it was the years that had changed his demeanor, his mannerisms—along with everything that had originally attracted you to him. This version seemed to attempt to try to be like him, and while he succeeded for the most part, it just wasn't the same. You were certain Gabriella felt the same way. What other reason would there have been for her coming to you? She was seeking the same kind of reassurance that you were that this wasn't all just a fever dream.
But even so, what exactly could you do in this situation? Confronting him about it would do no good. He'd probably end up denying it and twisting a story to make you sound deranged—which wouldn't be that hard to do, admittedly. You couldn't go to the police either. They'd disregarded your concerns completely when you went through the whole ordeal of trying to file a missing persons report a couple years back and they'd probably end up doing it again.
You clicked on the button, working almost robotically. You'd already garnered enough attention earlier, not only from Miguel but from the interns that you'd brought to help you with managing the photo booth. Just click the button and get out of here. Just get through the rest of this afternoon without making a scene. You needed any good reviews you could get, given that less and less people actually required the need for a photographer. "Alright, all done," you announced after clicking the button for what seemed to be fifty times, getting almost angle known to you.
"Excuse me, I was wondering if I could talk to you for a second," Miguel's voice took you out of your current task, looking up to see him practically looming over you. You looked around to see if this was a conversation that involved Xina. Which it wasn't. "Sure, give me a few just to finish with this," you found yourself purposely taking longer to finish adjusting the settings of the camera before walking over to the secluded spot he'd been standing in.
The tension in the air felt palpable, your mind running at a thousand miles per minute. He couldn't tell what you'd been thinking. You were basically hiding your face behind that camera. And it's not like he knew you well enough to know your mannerisms. You tried to assure yourself of these facts as you followed him to a secluded area in the back of the venue. The two of you stood in silence until he cleared his throat.
"You know," It wasn't an accusation, but rather a statement. The way he'd said it made it sound like he was telling you that the sky was blue. A simple fact, a universally accepted truth. "Your poker face isn't as good as you think it is. Even I could tell that."
He was eerily calm, his arms folded across his chest before he gestured you to speak. Giving you the opportunity to ask any questions that you had in mind. It wasn't that you didn't have any. Thousands of them were currently running through your mind. But you were too overwhelmed by the situation to be able to actually format them into something. The one that you managed to get out was a simple, "Why?"
"Why?" he drawled out, his pointer finger tapping at his chin in thought. His tone wasn't mocking but rather.. like he was contemplating this answer as well.
The truth was, he could get into the whole spiel about how his childhood was just one disaster after the next, from growing up with a mother that turned a blind eye to the way that his father acted to getting his face slammed in a locker for attempting to correct one of his upperclassmen's work. "Because I'm selfish, nothing more to it."
But how could he not be?
He couldn't recall a time where he hadn't been living with a void inside of him, without feeling like he was missing something. He started off young, molding himself into the perfect child to get a semblance of his mother's approval. It was stupid, being jealous of other students in his class. Hearing their parents tell them how proud they were over some mediocre award that he easily got a couple years prior. But even so, the jealousy within him burned deep in his veins. He did everything right, didn't he?
He'd given up every aspect of being a child, spending his time reading through high school calculus books in the third grade instead of going out to ride on his bike the same way that others his age did. But that still wasn't enough to please. He wasn't enough to please his mother. Much less his father. Then came saving the city of New York under a mantle that he hadn't asked for. He couldn't please them either. A majority of the articles that came out focused on the negative aspects of his fights, how Peter Parker wouldn't have made that mistake. As if he didn't know that already.
And then Gabriella just had to look at him like was capable of holding the earth up with his pointer finger, look at him with such admiration. It was a look he'd grown used to seeing from people over the years—from those in panic in the streets of Nueva York and the colleagues that he'd once tried to fit in with. But this, it just felt completely different. He didn't even need to try to impress Gabriella. Just being her father and being there was enough to please her.
It was the one time where he wasn't seeking out for some kind of self fulfillment. It was the one time he felt fulfilled with just being himself. Of knowing that it was enough. Of knowing that he was able to be loved. Even if his brain had imprinted the fact he couldn't be after hearing it from people he looked up to. People he desperately sought acceptance from.
You'd expected something more to it, your brows furrowing in confusion. "You impersonated a version of yourself just because you're selfish?" You asked incredulously, disbelief evident in your voice. While he'd acted nothing like your Miguel, if the one thing that they had in common was that they wouldn't do something this reckless without having some other reason for it.
"I saw an opportunity and I took it. I'm not going to apologize for that," his voice came out cold, detached. Almost like a practiced response. You looked at him in disbelief, any argument dying in your throat. Not that it mattered. You'd doubt he care.
"If it counts for anything-"
"It doesn't," you cut him off before he could finish, his gaze narrowing as he looked over at you. Now he looked at you like you were the one in the wrong. The sheer audacity this man had was enough to make you debate on doing a wedding shoot ever again.
Regardless, he decided to continue anyways, "He loved you. Though I can't really understand why, he did. I'm sorry that you didn't get the closure that you needed so long ago."
"I thought you had nothing to apologize for. With your selfishness and all."
"I'm not apologizing for what I did. I'm apologizing for the fact that you just happened to get caught in the crossfire."
The ground shook with an overwhelming intensity, a loud buzzing noise reverberating throughout the venue. "The sky's falling!" Almost like it was a stolen segment from Chicken Little, many of the guests start to scream that out as they started to run away. Sure enough, the sky itself to be defying every rule of gravity as it started to collapse. Was there any merit to running away? Just for that bit of reassurance of knowing that some kind of last attempt was made before an inevitable end?
From the corner of your eye, you noticed Miguel taking Gabriella in her arms as he ran away with her. Xina almost looked.. disappointed that he hadn't bothered to include her before she fell into step with him, or tried to. She was practically sprinting down the grass to try to catch up with his long strides, her chest heaving from the exhilaration. You figured you might as well run too, if only to fall into sync with what the others were doing. What did running do when the world was essentially falling apart though.
"No, no!" Miguel's voice boomed through the field, making you turn around to face him. He looked helpless as Gabriella faded into dust, his hands reaching out for something that he couldn't just quite grasp. Her wails for help echoed through the air, begging for salvation. "Dad!"
It was the only emotion you'd seen from this Miguel, the agony in his features a sharp contrast to the usual look of indifference. He looked like his body was suddenly too heavy, his legs collapsing underneath him as he fell to his knees. He buried his head in his hands, his body shaking from the silent tears he was trying to desperately hide away from the rest of the guests. His selfishness had gotten him up to this point, you realized. You wondered if he would do it all over again or if he regretted the decision.
Portals opened out of thin area, multiple masked people appearing from them with a Spider-Man costume on. Well, if you had to guess. While some were the Spider-Man costumes that you'd grown up reading about in comics and seeing in memoriam documentaries about, a lot of them just seemed to be a variation of the original. They all talked amongst themselves, analyzing the environment before eventually deciding that it would be a failed attempt to try to save it. At least, that's what you managed to get from their hushed whispers.
The one who had a bathrobe lazily wrapped around his suit walked over to Miguel, placing his hand on his shoulder. Miguel tensed underneath the touch, looking up at the man with an expression that could only be described as pure agony. "I ruined it all, it's all my fault," you heard Miguel cry out, holding onto the other man like a lifeline. He couldn't get himself to stand up, no matter how much the other man attempted to do so. "Come on, Miguel, we need to go. We can't do anything else for this universe," the other man told him, rubbing his shoulder.
Was the cost of his happiness really worth all this? The time that he'd spent pretending just for it to end up shriveling away like a rotten fruit? As much as he wanted to feel guilty for essentially being the end of this universe, he couldn't. The time that he spent with Gabriella were some of the best moments that he'd ever had. Maybe he could try again. Find another variant of her and take her to his universe instead. To avoid these situations. If he pretended once, he could do it again. The thought didn't settle right with him, though.
She wasn't something to be easily replaced, much like he'd done with her father. The child had grown accustomed to having him around but she didn't love him with the same intensity that she'd loved her father. Almost like she subconsciously knew. He got up to his feet, wiping the tears streaming down his face with the back of his hand. Miguel looked over from his peripheral, your expression completely calm. Like you'd accepted the situation rather than fearing it. Maybe putting the effort into pretending to be with you wouldn't have been as bad as he thought. Maybe.
Alongside the bitter feeling of acceptance came the feelings of regret. You didn't regret loving Miguel with the intensity that you'd had. You didn't regret anything that had occurred throughout the relationship. What you did regret, however, was holding on to the foolish hope that he'd come back after these years. That the two of you could live a simple life together. You'd ended up with nothing, disappearing into dust like you were nothing but just another meaningless speck to count off.
With the amount of yelling you'd heard from those affected, you would've imagined that the process would be much more painful than it actually was. It was if one second you could feel your legs and the next, you suddenly lost sensation of the limbs. Before you were suddenly enveloped by darkness, the last thing that you saw was Miguel entering a portal to escape this crumbling universe without so much as a glance back. Leaving the same way he'd done all those years ago.

Harry was your first love. Something so fleeing that if you were to blink or glance at it, it disappeared instantly. It blurred into your life the way acrylic colors blended to create a clash of colors like a summer evening in July. It was all tangy and sweet, with a scalding, sweaty undertone. Beautiful yet uncomfortable to endure.
He was sweet, resembling a sweet syrup in any refresher you would get in a coffee shop. Sweet, yet messy. The sap wasn't noticeable until it became unbearable to have in between your fingers.
Enduring the sappy-like texture on the tip of your fingers, wiping the mess clean from your skin, bonding with Henry became inevitable. You didn't want to let him go, but it was for the better for each other.
But after growing out of each other, things ended with a silver lining—growing and learning within a long distance from each other.
Then, you met Miguel.
Another man from another dimension.
Meeting someone from another world was not on your bucket list, let alone in the span of goals you had for the next few years or so. But Miguel managed to tergiversate his way into your plans (and heart). He fit right into your life like a puzzle piece you didn't know was missing.
And you love it.

“Is your dish okay? Because if it isn't, I can send it back and—” You fade his rambles with a gentle touch on his hand. “Yes, it's perfect Migs. Thank you.” The sound of cutlery clicking on the white ceramic plates complimented the ambiance of the warm-lit dining area.
Small chatter created a cozy environment that made anyone lull to sleep. “And please, don't yell at the chef like last time.” You forcefully giggle and can almost imagine the events playing out like a storyboard.
“They didn't give you the grilled chicken fillet.” He grumbles, looking away from his dish and to the side, keeping his gaze on the maroon carpet. “Hey,” You gently cupped his cheek, disregarding your silverware. “It’s okay. Sometimes, we make mistakes on off days. It's nothing new.”
“I know,” He pouts. “I just want you to have a warm meal.”
“And I'm grateful for your well-being. Just don't yell at the chef and make them cry again. Please.” You plead, gently rubbing his cheekbone with the pad of your thumb. “…okay.” He grumbles in defeat, taking your hand away from his face and gently holding your hand with a reassuring squeeze.
“I won’t.”
/
You worked on your dish, taking in pasta forkfuls and grilled chicken. Miguel keeps a close eye while eating his dish, savoring his fillet mignon. You basked in the silence, probably in your little world while with him. But a single greeting broke the mellow silence. “Hey,”
It wasn't just a simple “Hey” to get someone’s attention. Instead, it was an exasperated one. The exhale is a sign of relief—the relief of seeing someone familiar after a long period of time. A sigh that read, “Oh, it's been a while; I missed seeing you..”
Miguel’s head turned for him without his brain enabling his thought process. “Oh, hey, Harry.” You smile, showing off your little dimples to him. “What brings you here?” Harry makes his way over to the two of you, unaware of the daggers that Miguel was throwing at him. “I’m here with Miguel. My boyfriend.”
Harry turns his attention to your aggravated partner, oblivious to the aura Miguel sent. “Already moved on? That was fast.”
Not an amusing joke, even for Harry. He lets out a forced laugh, hoping to drown out the awkward air around them—it only made it more suffocating to be in that bubble. “It's been a couple of years.” You laughed, trying to ease the unsteady environment. But it was laughable beyond that point.
While exchanging words, Harry’s wavering eyes remained on you, taking in every feature about you. “You work here?” You ask as you look up at Harry. “As a server only.”
Your smile, cute dimples, everything caught Harry’s attention. It felt like he was looking at the playing field and wondering if he was about to get to second base. The conversation dragged like a snail, going slowly for Miguel.
“But it was nice seeing you.” The only best solution was stepping on the awkward waters rising as Harry nodded and sighed. “Yes, it was nice seeing you too. But let me know if you guys need anything.” With a simple nod, he walks off almost in a rushed manner.
/
“Jesus.” Miguel was now away from the warm dining area of the restaurant and now in the men’s room. He stood in the handicap stall momentarily, burying his face into his palms. The last thing he needed to happen was for you to lecture him on his behavior, especially now that Harry had dropped by unannounced.
“You’re exaggerating, you're exaggerating.” He repeats the mantra, sounding like a possessed man. If anyone were to walk in, some eye brows would have been raised. But after repeating the phrase a couple more times, he stops and rubs his eyes, much to his doctor's dismay about the habit.
“It's fine.” He thinks, reaching for the stall door to step out. But the sound of a familiar voice and a different voice enter the washroom. “Who was that woman who you greeted earlier?”
“An ex,” Harry states matter of factly.
“You miss her, don't you?” The other voice inquires as if they anticipated drama. “I've seen the way you look at her.” The other voice adds. “Yeah, but just as friends! It's been a while since we last spoke.”
A little, just a little?
“But she's with someone else.” Harry stumbles his words, attempting to redeem his words.
“And you don't seem okay with that.” A lingering silence suffocates space immediately. A sigh from Harry fills the space, shattering the awkwardness.
“I'm okay with it. I just miss her company.”
The corner of Miguel’s lip subtly twitches, a sign of irritation. He waits, waiting for the two men to finish their discussion. It wasn't until ten minutes later that they finally left. Almost as if he were following behind, Miguel steps out of the stall silently, feeling his senses get overwhelmed with his typical possessive return once again.

“Keep it down for me, bebe. Can you do that for me?” He bites down on your neck and nibbles on your skin. The flat of his tongue lathers against the bite crevices, soothing the dull, aching pain. “Your canines…” Your comment fell silent before his lips kissed the now red mark against your flesh before his hands worked quickly to raise the hem of your skirt. “Shhh, we don't need to get kicked out, do we?” He whispers. The family bathroom immediately got filled with scuffles and moving around of clothes. His ring and pointer finger ghost at your clothed cunt, dragging the tips of his fingers down your entrance, feeling the dampness.
“I just bit you, and you’re all riled up? Pobrecita.” He pouts to you and slowly moves the gusset of your underwear to the side gently with a tug. “Just keep it down for me, okay? Can you do that for me?” His gentle movements drew out soft whines and moans from your mouth like word vomit while his fingers traced your entrance, drawing out your glistening arousal.
"Just be quiet for me," he nuzzles into the crook of your neck, helping himself to another bite of your soft skin. He follows his fingers, delving into your fluttering wall, eagerly taking his fingers in. "Shhh..." The sound of wet, sticky gushes fills the family room bathroom, with your mess dripping down onto the floor and occasionally on the bathroom wall.
Your eyes rolled to the back of your head, occasionally feeling his two fingers curl slightly. You bit down on your bottom lip, humming out your pleasure to the rhythm of his finger moving in and out.
"Don't make a mess, I don't want you to ruin my watch."
The soft thrusting of his fingers moved rapidly, pulling his fingers out completely before shoving his fingers back into your needy pussy. The rapid thrusts became too much, releasing your mess along with your cum all over the floor before you. "Ay, ya te dije." He pulls his fingers out, shaking his hand dry and lifting you up on the sink counter. "I told you to not make a mess." He put a resting finger against your fluttering core, lightly pushing down to soothe the stretch.
"Spread for me a bit, nena." He whispers and grasps onto your thighs, helping you. You could already imagine the mess you left behind the counter, leaving a glistening mess on the marble. You open up for him with a meek "Okay." You feel your legs trembling against the cold marble. You watch on as Miguel hurries to take off his pants, shoving the pants down quickly and dragging you close to his aching member.
A soft moan escaped your lips, feeling his length rub against your core and clit, lightly thrusting his length in between your entrance. "Let me just prepare myself," He whispers, slowly collecting your slick against his length. You let out a whine before you let out a moan, feeling his tip occasionally slip in between your folds. He thrusted his tip in a couple more times before he continued to grind his length against your clit.
“There we go. Let’s get you comfortable.” He whispers into your ear before he slowly pushes himself in, earning a loud moan from you. He immediately covered your mouth, muffling your beautiful sounds.
“Shh, be good and keep it down.” He whispers while gently pushing his tip against your cervix, occasionally earning a soft cry in pain. You felt him slowly pull out and keep a gentle pace. “Is that better, nena?” He croons into your ear. He grinds his length into you, trying to keep your moans and mews at a limit.
“So good, cariño.” He whispers. “Come on, hold on for a while.” His fingers trace the soft red marks on your neck, putting pressure to soothe the pain.
“I want us to be in here for a moment.”
/
The two of y'all rushed out of the bathroom, getting chased out of the restaurant by two servers. “And get out of here! Never come back!” They yell out as soon as the two of you scurry out while adjusting your clothes. You exchanged breathy laughs with each other when you felt the cold air nip at your skin.
“I told you to keep it down.”
I MADE A MIGUEL FIC - IDC IF IT GETS ATTENTION I JUST REALLY NEEDED TO POST IT LOL
(description from ao3 hopefully that link works!)
Peering at the two entries, the younger O’Hara finally selected one at random: Earth-6771. A new window opened from the middle screen and Miguel stepped away, coffee in hand, to get his suit. The footage flickered on, crisp and clean and the audio crackling with Miguel’s breath as he got to his feet atop a sand dune.
Spider-Woman 5051 was one of his first recruits. Together with Peter and Miguel's brother, they painstakingly built the Spider Society to suit their original vision of a communal, multiversal protection squad. Things change once Miguel leaves it behind to chase a life that's not his, damaging a blooming interdimensional love, and the fledgling Spider Society discovers just how quickly fate can change in a year and four months.

There wasn't a big A-Ha! moment when you came to the realization that you loved Miguel O'Hara. The words just slipped out naturally the moment he'd said them to you, like they belonged to him alone. Because in all actuality, they only did belong to him. There was no one else you could see yourself waking up to next in the morning. No one else you wanted to spend time with for the foreseeable future. Maybe it was the memories between the two of you that helped you come to the conclusion that you loved him.
From the time that he carried you back to your shared apartment
Your legs wobbled with every step you took on the concrete, the heels you had on digging into the back of your ankle and the sides of your toes. You didn't have to take the heels off to know that you were mostly likely bleeding. "Wait, Miguel. Just wait up a bit," you were trying to catch up to his long strides, failing miserably with each new sting of pain that shot up your foot. You made a mental note not to wear heels whenever Miguel suggested a 'brisk walk' as a date idea.
He looked back to see you leaning against a pole, taking off your heels for some kind of temporary relief before you continued the rest of the walk. Not that you looked too enthusiastic about that either. Though he couldn't have his pretty girlfriend standing on a dirty sidewalk, could he? With what seemed to be no effort, he took you in his arms and resumed the walk. "How bad's the pain?" He looked down at you once he was sure he wouldn't bump into anyone in a three block radius.
You opened up your mouth to speak, about to tell him that it was bearable enough to the point you could still walk, but he interrupted you by saying, "Don't lie to me because you think you're inconveniencing me. Just tell me the truth." The truth was that you were debating on staying on that sidewalk and calling an Uber at this time of night. Not that he needed to know that, though. "It's not so bad now that you're carrying me," you reluctantly admitted, looking away from him.
If at any point during the night he struggled with the task, he didn't seem to show it. He hadn't even cracked a sweat. Somehow he'd managed to maneuver the front door open, setting you down on the couch with the utmost care necessary. "I'm gonna go get you the first aid kit. Is there something else you need?" You shook your head, laying back onto the couch cushion while you waited for him to come back.
He came back, raising your feet before taking a seat down next to you. He put your feet down on his lap, getting an ointment from the box. You wondered just how many things he had in there for these types of occasions. Throughout the couple months of dating, you'd seen him pull out an ointment for ant bites, scratches, and now blisters. "Try to stay still for me, will you?" He murmured, starting to rub the ointment over the exposed skin. His touch was the gentlest you'd ever felt, barely feeling the subtle brush of his fingers.
"Si no sana hoy, sanará mañana," he hummed as he finished applying the bandages, making sure that they were well wrapped before standing up. You made no attempt to stand up from your spot on the couch just yet, letting your feet recover from wearing those heels for five hours straight. "You need some help getting into the bedroom?" He questioned, scooping you into his arms with that same ease as before when you nodded.
"Thank you."
"Anything for you, my lady."
To the time that he begrudgingly agreed to dance with you in the rain
"Come on, just indulge me a bit," you stood in the middle of the empty road, extending your hand out to him while the rain poured down relentlessly. "I'll indulge you inside where we don't have any chance of catching a cold," he grumbled from his spot on the sidewalk, trying to appear menacing. He really did just look like a sopping wet cat, especially with the way that his brows furrowed slightly. "Mami, let's go. I'll let you dance with me inside, please. Any song you want, too."
You kept your arm extended to him, waiting. You knew that he was bound to fall for your whims any second. He let out a small groan, pushing himself off the sidewalk before walking over to where you were standing. "If you get sick, I won't hesitate to tell you that I told you so," he intertwined his hand with yours, the warmth from his body a nice contrast to the chill air surrounding the two of you. "Do you know how rare it is for Nueva York streets to be this empty?"
Usually, there was at least a mad man that would be running around the streets. Even in these conditions. But the two of you were alone, streetlights illuminating your 'dance floor.' His reluctance seemed to fade away as the two of you swayed on the street, with seemingly no rhythm whatsoever. "If you wanted to sway with me, we could've done that inside," he pointed out, letting out a small snort. "Just because I said I wanted to dance didn't mean that I promised to be good at it."
He guided you through a slow rhythm, his coordination slightly better than what you would've given him credit for. His feet moving to a silent melody in his head. "I was a chambelán at this quince, they had us practice the routine until we ended up crying or collapsing from exhaustion," he spoke up before you had the chance to ask, "But at least it's given me some pretty gnarly dance moves."
"Hey, Miguel?"
"¿Qué paso?"
"Never say 'gnarly' again. You sound older than what you are," you burst out into little giggles at the scoff that left his lips. "I'll let you know that all the scientific studies I've participated on have shown that gnarly's making a comeback."
"Hey, Miguel?" You were debating on if this was the right time to admit what had been threatening to escape your lips for a while now. All you could do was hope that he didn't think that this admission was too soon.
"If you're gonna ask me about the resources that I have for those studies, I don't have them on me now. I'll get them later, though," you could only roll your eyes at his persistence, a laugh bubbling from your chest. Even as the laugh echoed through the empty street, you weren't exactly too concerned with how loud you were being. It wasn't like it compared to the way your heart was beating against your rib cage, your hands starting to clam up in his grasp.
"No, it's not about that. Not that gnarly's making a comeback either way."
"Mark my words. Gnarly. Will. Be. Making. A. Comeback," he accentuated his words carefully, giving you a mock glare before he continued to speak, "But if it's not about that, then what's up?"
The moment of truth. Maybe this was a mistake. You could feel your throat close up, your movements starting to get a little sloppy. Just tell him. His reaction can't be that bad, right? You knew he had no reason to react negatively but every single worst-case scenario started to run through your head relentlessly. "I love you."
"I love you too," while it was the response that you were expecting, it still caught you off-guard. He held your gaze, showing no signs of regret or hesitation as he whispered those words to you. "I don't think that I've loved someone the same way that I love you," and even now, he had to top off your admission. You weren't sure how much time had passed by while the two of you danced away, all that you knew was that the cold tomorrow was probably worth it. If only to say that you got the chance at this experience.
He didn't say anything the next morning when you woke up with a cough, your skin on your nose starting to get raw from how many times you'd gotten up to wipe it. Even though you could tell that he was itching to tell you, the words practically on the top of his tongue if you had to guess. "I got you some chicken soup," he spoke up after you woke up from what seemed to be your 50th nap on the day, the faint aroma from the soup wafting up your stuffy nose.
Definitely worth it.
And even the time that he'd gone up to receive his award with your lipstick all over his face
"I need my good luck kiss, c'mon," he gently pinched your side, a small laugh escaping from your lips as you attempted to push his hand away. "You'll get my lipstick all over you," you pointed out, remembering that the Chanel lipstick you had on was in fact, not transfer-proof. Miguel didn't seem to care too much though, a grin on his face as he leaned in to kiss you. "At least they'll know that my lady loves me."
You'd imprinted the mark of your lips on his cheeks and the tip of his nose, satisfied by the work you'd done when you looked at it. Perhaps you'd gotten a little carried away. Not that he looked bad covered in your red lipstick, by any means. He was no longer Miguel O'Hara, the world-renowned geneticist with more awards under his belt than he could count. He was simply just a love struck idiot with a grin on his face. A love struck idiot for you.
"What time do the awards start again?" You wiped away the lipstick on the side of your mouth and under your lips, grabbing the tube from your purse to fix it. The last thing that the two of you needed was to hear Aaron's snide remarks about how Miguel was incompetent. You went to hand him a clean makeup wipe, but he rejected the advance. "I believe they started about five minutes ago," he responded, pulling his jacket sleeve to look at the watch adorning his wrist.
"Why are you not freaking out about this more?" You questioned him, panic evident on your voice as you pushed everything inside your purse and moved to get out the car. He put his hand on your thigh, gently rubbing it through the material of the silk dress you'd worn for tonight. "Why are you freaking so much about it?" For someone who valued punctuality, he seemed to be oddly calm in this situation. Well, you supposed there was nothing you could do now that you both were late. You took a couple deep breaths, grabbing the stuff you'd missed when you were in a rush.
While you were busy gathering your bearings, he went around the car and opened the door for you. Extending a hand out to you. He grasped your fingers in between his own, helping you with getting out of the car before he even thought of stepping into the building. "They're about to announce your name, O'Hara. Get in there," Delgato hissed as the two of you walked past him, his head craning up to look up at Miguel. "Maybe if you stopped standing in my way, I might be able to."
You could practically see the sheer anger in Delgato's face as he muttered to himself, moving out of the way nonetheless. "Now I know why you end up so stressed," you muttered, making your way down the stairs to take a seat. The room was a bit packed but the two of you managed to find some good seats in the middle. A couple people turned to look at the two of you but their attention was captured once more by the person speaking up on stage. Something about a drug slowing the speed in which some disease grew.
"And now for our next award of the night, please give a hand to Dr. Miguel O'Hara from Alchemax."
The cameras started clicking immediately as soon as he stepped onto the stage, a couple whispers of how unprofessional he was being being shared around in the audience. A couple thank you's were shared, to his lab colleagues and assistants who all simply just nodded upon being acknowledged, before he delved into what the topic of his research had been about. Well, just enough to keep the audience and you entertained. Even though only a couple of the words coming out his mouth actually managed to stick, you couldn't help but listen intently.
To the way that he described his work, with such passion and dedication. The way that he visibly lightened up whenever he got to speak about something that was fascinating to him. Even with all the talk circulating through the audience, you just couldn't help but be so proud of him. His eyes met yours through the sea of people, a smile on his face as he finished with the summary he'd gone over time and time again in front of the bathroom mirror. "Are there any questions?"
He was starting to get agitated, even you could tell from a distance. Well, it's not like you could exactly blame either parties here. The audience wanted to know why he'd shown up with lipstick adorning almost every corner of his face and he wanted to get asked questions about his research. "Any questions that aren't related to my current appearance?" He decided to ask, and it was almost comical how many hands went down. He answered the questions of those who remained, about five. But all he seemed to care about was having your attention in the audience as he spoke.
And while you'd expected him to win tonight, you hadn't expected this. Having him on one knee while you two were supposed to be celebrating his achievement. "So I didn't really prepare a speech before this or anything. But I was just wondering if you'd give me the second win of the night and agree to marry me," As corny as it was, you found yourself nodding to his proposal. "You mean to tell me that worked?" He asked, hesitatingly reaching over to grab your hand to slide the ring on.
"Yes, you idiot. You're acting like I expected anything more from you," you answered, watching as he slid the band on. It was fairly simple, a small stone perched on the middle of it. Your birth stone. "I promise to make you the happiest woman alive," he murmured against your lips, gently tilting your chin so you'd be looking at him. "You already are," it was your turn to be smooth. He let out a small chuckle, his lips gently pressing against yours.
So how did it get to this point?
To the point of having dozens of your calls and messages ignored, and if there was a response, it'd be a simple one-worded response. Enough for you to want to drop the subject all together. Dates between the two of you were a common occurrence, or at least often enough to the point where you didn't have to spend five minutes wondering when the last one had been. Promises left unfulfilled, accumulating only to be left discarded in the dust.
As much as you tried to resist it at first, you started to grow.. okay with it. It felt almost selfish to ask more of him, knowing how much effort he put into making sure that the three of you had a roof over your head. You were able to get a part-time job, giving you more time to spend with Gabriella. A nagging thought kept bugging you though. You married him for the purpose of having him as a husband, not solely a provider. Maybe you weren't as okay with it as you thought.
Your eye twitched when the last balloon was being filled up. How was it that almost every member of his family was capable of showing up and he wasn't? Even some of them came from Mexico for the week. For all the events that he'd missed, you at least would've thought that he would make some attempt to show up for Gabriella's party. You could see her looking around, with the hope of catching a glimpse of her father. It wouldn't hurt to call his work to see what was so important that he couldn't get off, right?
"Alchemax Industries. What can I help you with today?" The receptionist's bored tone came through the other end of the line after spending a couple minutes on hold, your foot irritably tapping against the hardwood floor. All you could do was hope that they wouldn't send you to another line like the previous five times.
"Hi, I'm calling about one of your employees. Miguel O'Hara. I was wondering until what time he was scheduled to work today," you answered quietly, in attempts that no one would overhear. The last thing you needed were any additional comments from his family about how you couldn't keep him around. You listened as the receptionist on the other side started typing out on their computer, silently thanking them.
"¡Te voy agarrar!" You heard yelling behind you, moving to the side before you ended up getting trampled by a bunch of five year olds. "Okay, sorry about taking a while. So about the employee that you're calling, there's a mistake. Miguel hasn't-" The rest of it fell onto deaf ears, your grip on the phone tightening as you struggled to keep up your composure. "Ma'am?" You heard the receptionist ask after a couple moments of silence. The fact that the call had ended hadn't even registered until a while later.
The words kept sounding through your head as the party continued, despite how much you'd tried to drown them out. With water balloon fights in the backyard with some of the kids, karaoke with Gabriella, and the breaking of the piñata. But you couldn't. Your eyes kept darting over to the door, almost expecting to find Miguel walking in at any given moment now. Though you weren't exactly surprised when it remained shut after the first five times that you'd checked. Everyone was having a good time and all you could do was miss him.
Chatter and laughter filled the atmosphere as you made your way through the penthouse, trying to find Gabriella. She'd disappeared right after the cake was cut with the pretense that she needed to use the bathroom about half an hour ago. And while she did spend up to that in the bathroom, it was only really whenever you gave her your cellphone to play around with. And you knew that none of the kids were playing hide and seek. "Gabi!" You called out, searching for her in the guest room.
The last time you'd seen her, she was busy talking with her tías. Nice women, really. Just too involved in finding out whatever chisme they could get out of Gabriella without any regards towards her feelings or the setting they were currently in. You wouldn't be surprised if they brought up the topic of separation to the poor girl. "Hey, have you seen Gabi around?" You didn't even question why Gabriel was exiting one of the rooms with one of your friends, too concerned about Gabi.
Gabriel wiped some spit from the corner of his mouth, shaking his head. "I'll let you know if we find her," he assured you, trying to hide your friend with his body. Like that'd erase the suspicion. Though you guessed it wasn't the right time to go over the whole 'don't hurt them' spiel. You'd do that when you knew your daughter was safe. "Okay, thank you," you told him, going to look for her in the secret spots you knew she liked to hide. In the laundry room. The library. Out in the balcony.
You stepped inside your shared closet with Miguel, not expecting to find her inside. You only really bothered to check as a last resort. But there she was. Her knees pulled up to her chest with her head buried deep in them, sniffling that was almost enough to bring you down to your knees. You walked over to her, sitting down in front of her before gently pulling her hands away from her face.
Only then could you see the extent of her pain. Her cheeks were tear-streaked and her nose was starting to turn pink at the tip from how much she'd been rubbing at it. "What's wrong, mija?" You wiped away the tears that brimmed at the edge of her waterline with your thumb, drying it on your jeans. All you'd been trying to do was make sure she was having a good time at the party and your efforts had all but flopped.
"Why didn't he show up?" With every little crack of her voice, you could feel a piece of your heart shatter. You knew perfectly well who she was referring to her. Just like you'd been waiting for him to arrive, you caught small glimpses of Gabriella searching hopelessly around for her father. "I don't know. I wish I knew what could've been so important but I don't," you whispered, holding her close to your chest. There wasn't any use lying to her, not when you knew she'd look through it.
"Mami, me duele la cabeza," Gabriella spoke up after a couple seconds, looking up at you. You could only guess. From what you could gather, you figured that she must've been crying at least for the previous half hour. "I can't give you any pills.. but I'll read you a story once you lay down for bed," you told her, helping her stand up from her spot on the floor. Gabriella left the closet to go brush her teeth and get ready for bed, leaving you in the deafening silence of the closet.
"Party's over," you announced on your way downstairs, already imagining the flurry of complaints that would come your way. You knew that if it was up to everyone else, they would find a way to keep the party going until two in the morning. After thanking everyone for coming and sending them home with leftovers that would last them through the weekend, you cleaned up the house a bit. Picking up a couple candy wrappers from the floor and sweeping off the multitude of streamers on the floor.
You'd spent the next hour tidying up the house, cleaning up juice stains from your once pristine white floors. Well, at least Gabriella managed to have a good time. Mostly. You'd almost expected her to fall asleep by the time you went back upstairs, but you saw her peering over at you when you opened up the door. "Alright, what story did you want me to read?" You questioned, stepping over to the library she had in the corner of her room. Naming off the first suggestions that appeared in your field of vision. "Can we do The Little Prince?"
Gabriella scooted over on the bed to let you sit down next to her, listening intently as you begin to read the story. Almost like she hadn't been listening to this story for the previous two weeks. At some point, she'd learned some of the passages from memory and began to recite them from the top of her head. You finished the book, half expecting her to still be awake and wanting another book. But no. Her eyes were shut, her arms tightly wrapped around one of her plushies while her breathing slowed down.
"Que sueñes con los angelitos," you whispered, pushing a couple loose strands of her hair back before kissing her forehead. She stirred in her sleep, her grip on the blankets tightening slightly. You moved when she finally managed to still, putting the book back on the shelf where it belonged. Prepping it for tomorrow. You made your way out the room, making sure to leave her night lamp on before shutting the door behind you. At least her headache hadn't bothered her too badly.
You poured yourself a glass of wine from a trip you'd taken with Miguel to Italy, swirling the burgundy liquid around. Much how your own thoughts were currently swirling around without any clear direction. Not your usual drink of choice, you had to admit. But it was a nice distraction. The subtle glow from the moonlight illuminated the otherwise empty room, the quietness almost too much to bear. There was nothing to distract you from the thoughts running rampant inside your head, each one of them leading to what seemed to be the same conclusion.
A divorce.
Even thinking about it felt wrong, though. You and Miguel made a pact upon getting married—stating that no matter how mad the two of you got at one another, that word would never be mentioned. Not even as a joke. But you supposed that was made during a different time. A time where Miguel wouldn't put his family on the back burner simply because of work affairs. A time where you didn't have to come up with excuses for his behavior.
It wasn't just for yourself that you were considering this solution. But also for Gabriella. His absence was starting to affect her in more ways than you could possibly fathom. Not just today for her birthday, but also throughout the last couple months. You could see the different attempts that Gabriella had made to talk to her dad, most of them ending up unsuccessful. Only leaving her more and more confused. Leaving her wondering what she'd done wrong.
"¡Mami!" Gabriella called out from the other room while you were busy finishing up dinner in the kitchen, setting a separate plate for Miguel to put in the microwave. A nudging feeling that you would find the plate the same way you'd left it running through your head. You walked over to Gabi, spotting her in the kitchen table with a coloring book set in front of her. You were almost impressed by how precise she was at such a young age.
She'd managed to color in the photos without going through the lines once. She was always a bit of a perfectionist though, much like her father. It felt like staring at a reflection of a mini Miguel at times. If only he would try to maintain that relationship you knew Gabriella needed in her life.
"Yeah, what's up?" You wiped your hands on a napkin before taking a seat next to her. Looking over at the design on her book, you decided to commit the sight to memory. It wouldn't hurt to search it up later and use it as a form of gift inspiration for her birthday party coming up. "There's this parent career day tomorrow and I was hoping that you could come."
You wouldn't have expected her to ask you for help first. Given that your job mostly consisted of logistics and paperwork most of the day. The last interesting thing that had happened in the office was an affair between one of the CEO's and an intern. "You sure you don't want your dad to go instead?" Even if it wasn't by much, you figured that genetics would be more interesting than how graph analysis works. Gabriella played with her pens, avoiding looking at you.
"What's the point of asking if he's not gonna show up?" She spoke up after a couple moments, a small sigh escaping from your lips. You couldn't lie to her any better than you could lie to yourself, you knew that much. But you at least had to try. If only to stop that frown from forming on her face. "How about I present what your dad does for work? So it's almost like he's there," Except he wouldn't be. You figured it was a good enough compromise for her though. "But why can't he show up? Do we not matter to him anymore?"
The same question that clouded your thoughts while you laid in bed, arms wrapped around one of his pillows so it wouldn't feel so empty. So you wouldn't be reminded that the stupid California King was too big just for you to lay on it. "We do matter, he's just busy with work. It's how we're able to live the way we do," you answered, trying to keep your answer simple without dumbing it down. She was smart enough to understand. Smarter than you sometimes gave her credit for. "Okay. Your option sounds good."
You'd stayed up well past midnight that night, reading through a couple of Miguel's research papers in some attempt to figure out what you needed to describe. So far, all you had was talking about flasks and the basics of chemistry that you'd learned. Adorning a poster board with glitter also proved to be more work than you would've imagined, the clean-up taking longer than you would've expected. At least it didn't look too bad. Well, just enough to impress a classroom full of ten year olds.
Just the fact that Gabriella wasn't even making the effort anymore was enough to reassure the decision that maybe a divorce was necessary. Even if the thought was still painful to think about. At some level, you still loved Miguel just as much as the first day that you'd uttered those words to him. Just as much as the day you showed up on the aisle to officially intertwine your life with his. But you knew that neither you or Gabriella could be content just expecting the minimum from him.
The front door swung open, a loud groan escaping from Miguel's lips as he stepped into the threshold. His work shoes squeaked against the floors you'd just cleaned as he trudged over to the living room. "Hey, where's Gabi?" His lips barely grazed your cheek when he bent down to greet you, his voice riddled with exhaustion. He took a seat on the couch, his back slouched against the cushions. "She's asleep. Given that it's currently midnight."
You heard shuffling from his side, the bright phone screen illuminating his face. From this angle, you could see the dark circles underneath his eyes. It almost made you regret wanting to even bring this topic up. He squinted, tapping at the screen with his pointer finger to turn down the brightness. "Ah shock, you're right. I missed her birthday," Normally you would've been okay with the fact that he'd even bothered to remember the event he'd missed.
"Where were you?" You questioned, reaching over to turn on the lamp. You felt like one of those detectives in the old movies you'd watched with Miguel, the light dim enough to create an ominous shadow over yourself. "What do you mean? I was at work all day," he responded, rubbing a hand through his face. He was committed to making the lie work, you had to give him that. He even had the Alchemax lab coat and badge on. And under normal circumstances, you might've just let that slide. Like all the other previous instances.
You calmly took a sip from your drink, letting the suspense marinate for just a little while longer. "I called Alchemax. It's funny that you say that, given that their system shows that you quit months ago. So, I'll give you one more chance to tell me the truth," you told him, his eyes widening almost comedically. The silence was enough of a tell for you to realize that you had him cornered now. He managed to meet your gaze after a couple seconds, speaking almost begrudgingly, "You called my job?"
You gave him a dirty look, almost surprised that it was what he was choosing to focus on. "Right, right. Not the point," he muttered, rubbing his temples. The silence was almost deafening, the two of you trying to keep things quiet for the sake of keeping some normalcy in front of Gabriella. "She kept asking about you, you know?" You started off, setting the wine glass with a thump before speaking again, "I kept lying to her. Telling her that something at work was more important than you being able to show up to her party."
"I want a divorce." It was so quiet that you could hear a pin drop. His mouth opened and closed like a fish, and you could almost see the different wheels in his head work. The wedding ring around your finger suddenly felt too heavy, the life that the two of you built together threatening to crash down in a mere matter of seconds just by that single sentence. "The least that you could do now is tell me the truth. Because what I'm imagining right now is that you have some kind of secret family on the down low."
In your defense, what more were you supposed to think? Especially when he's made no effort to tell you anything up to this point? You picked up the wine glass, glancing over at him to see what he'd do now. You'd be lying if you said that you fully expected him to start telling you the truth. But you hoped he did. If only to make you reconsider the idea of getting a divorce. If only to let you sleep better at night.
"Okay. Fine, I'll tell you. Just please.. consider the divorce one more time. Please. And believe me when I say there is no other family," he stood up from his spot, his hands clasped together as he stood in front of you. This was starting to sound dangerously similar to the number of excuses that he'd given you before but you decided on giving him the benefit of the doubt. You stayed silent and he took that as a cue to continue, "I haven't been around because... I'm Spider-Man."
The wine in your mouth poured down your nose, the liquid have gone down the wrong pipe. You coughed, attempting to clear your throat as the words settled in. There was no way that he was being serious. But the way that he was looking at you made it seem like he was. "And I know that it doesn't justify putting the two of you on the back burner but there's a lot of crime in Nueva York and throughout the universes in case you haven't realized." Universes?
Now you were certain he'd either lost it or he was just pulling excuses out of his ass. Probably a combination of both if you had to guess. "You're kidding," you deadpanned, waiting for some kind of indication that this was all just a joke. He flicked his wrist, a string of what seemed to be a web sticking onto the lamp next to you. You reached over, tentatively scooping the substance onto your pointer finger to examine what it was. It was indeed.. a web. You were starting to wonder if you'd drunk too much wine.
Nope. Still half a glass left. You punched the side of your arm, waiting for some kind of indication that you were dreaming. All you received was a sharp shot of pain though. Now all you had left to do was actually acknowledge the situation. Accept the fact that your husband was the self-proclaimed vigilante of Nueva York.
"Why didn't you tell me in the first place?" You managed to ask after the initial shock had died down, clearing your throat. He shifted his feet awkwardly, sitting down next to you once more. "Because I've seen too many instances of this play out. I didn't want any danger to come to you after you found out," he responded, his hands reaching out to hold your own. "But please, trust me. I only have eyes for you. Every single of my absences has been for the better of Nueva York."
It all started to make sense, though. The amount of files scattered on his desk, information on previous villains. A couple comic books from the previous Spider-Man on his bedside table. The awkward disappearances when the two of you were out on the street.
"Please say something," he urged after a couple seconds of your silence, his calloused thumb rubbing small circles on your hand. What could you really say, though? It felt wrong to still be pissed off at him while he went off to save the city, and yet.. you still couldn't find it in yourself to forgive him just yet. "I know that the city of Nueva York needs you. But so does Gabriella. She doesn't deserve to be questioning what she's doing wrong as a child."
He was about to speak up but you quickly interrupted him, "She thinks she's not doing enough. That all those trophies in her room aren't enough for you to be proud of her. I beg of you to find some kind of balance before you end up losing the both of us for good." With that, you downed the rest of your wine before retreating to the kitchen to clean up the glass. You expected him to come back to bed, though you hadn't heard him come in after half an hour of tossing and turning. All you heard was the guest room door being opened.
You were awoken to the sweet scent of buttermilk, all kinds of different alarms going off in your head. The thought of Gabriella burning herself in the kitchen was starting to imprint itself in your brain. It certainly wasn't Miguel. Despite how groggy you were, you quickly rubbed your eyes and made your way over to the kitchen. Niña Bonita welcomed you as soon as you stepped inside, noticing Miguel stirring some batter with Gabriella by his side. At least she wasn't too close to the stove.
"Mi niña bonita, my dulce princesa," he hummed along to the song, gently ruffling Gabriella's hair. You stood at the doorway in silence, a small smile making itself known on your face despite how mad you were at Miguel. Gabriella attempted to push off his hands, but even she couldn't hide how much she was enjoying this time with him. "Mami, you finally got up!" Gabriella called you over once she noticed you.
"When'd you take the time to learn how to make these?" Usually it was you that took care of the cooking. "I'm not completely useless in the kitchen, I'll have you know," Miguel retorted, flipping a pancake with practiced ease. Though you knew better. You could see a couple pancake pieces sticking up to the ceiling. Just how long had he been up to try to perfect this skill for Gabriella? "Take a seat, they'll almost be done. The sous chef's been doing an excellent job helping."
"Papi promised we'd go to the aquarium today, to make up for missing my birthday," Gabriella announced as you were in the middle of pouring syrup onto your pancakes. You had to forcibly stop yourself from reacting, trying to ensure that you wouldn't be having syrup with a side of pancakes. "You sure you can handle it?" You gritted under your teeth when Gabriella went to retrieve her tablet in the living room. "I wouldn't have suggested it if I couldn't. Haven't given you any reason to but have some faith in me."
You raised your brows, waiting for him to realize just how contradictory that statement was. Not that it ever came, though. "Can I stay the night over at my friend's house?" Gabriella piped once she finished her pancakes, all too eager to grab your plate along with Miguel's. You glanced over at Miguel, seeing the resistance on his expression. "Which friend is it?" You questioned, trying to rack your brain if it was something that she mentioned before. "The one from soccer practice, Candice."
After making some calls to Candice's mom to make sure that sleepover was actually something that she was aware of, you gave Gabriella the go-ahead. She practically rushed into her bedroom after the three of you had finished with breakfast, picking out a pair of pajamas and clothes before stuffing them into her backpack. Triple checking it so there would be no reason for room to doubt her preparation. While she was in the shower, you snuck in her stuffed animal. Just as a safety precaution.
The trip to the aquarium was honestly more trouble than it was worth, in your opinion. Parking was nearly impossible, the vein on Miguel's forehead threatening to pop with each turn that he made around the lot. Waiting patiently for whatever spot would open up for half an hour before realizing that no one was leaving. Even Gabriella had started to get fidgety in the back seat, asking Miguel if you all were there yet over and over again. "Just get the valet, I'm sure it won't be that expensive," you suggested, hoping that it wouldn't add on to the frustration Miguel was feeling.
"Wait, hold on," like a beacon of hope, one of the spots opened up just as soon as you said that. Before he had the chance to park the car though, one of the newly arriving guests immediately seized the opportunity and took it before he had the chance. With one slam to the steering wheel, he relented and went over to get in line for the valet parking. "Here, you can watch a documentary on turtles," you pulled it up on your phone before leaving, not that you thought you would have to use it. And just like that, Gabriella immersed herself on what was on the screen.
Seeing the price of valet parking almost made you want to regret ever suggesting at all. Seriously, who charged $50 just for a parking spot? Gabriella let her grip on your phone slip when she was handing it to you, your brows furrowing as you already started to imagine the crack on screen just from the sound it made hitting the concrete. You quickly picked up, pocketing it up before Gabriella started to feel guilty. "Don't worry about it. I was due for a new one anyways," you assured her, holding to her hand while Miguel held her other one.
The three of you were visibly annoyed as soon as you stepped foot into the aquarium, the excitement towards this trip dying down with every single thing that kept going wrong. Not only had it taken half an hour and $50 to even enter, but now, none of the shows were even available? Even the dolphins had gone down with some kind of fish flu. Why it was even so full was beyond you. "Come on, we'll still have a good time," Miguel sounded like he was trying to collectively convince all three of you, offering Gabriella a piggy back ride as compensation.
Gabriella didn't seem to mind it too much, her head raised like she was royalty while perched on Miguel's shoulders. His grip on her legs was tight, assuring she wouldn't fall down. Given that she had a tendency to test herself and lean as forward as she could when one of the fish approached. You'd never seen her this excited about a trip before. You quickly realized the reason for her excitement. Miguel kept giving her subtle facts about each of the different species that you approached, whether from his own brain or the information board put up.
And she held on to every single word that escaped from his mouth, listening to him like he was the most interesting man in the world.
After seeing how full the gift shop was at the end of the tour, you decided to wait outside with a couple other guests. All you could hope was that Miguel would talk to her while the two of them were inside, give her some of that connection that she longed for. She came back bouncing back with a shark plushie— one identical to the one Miguel had gotten you on a prior date. Just the sight make your resolve melt a bit. You glanced over at Miguel, seeing him give you a shrug. "It's what the princess wanted."
Exiting the aquarium was almost as troublesome as entering, a line of cars parked at the exit. Gabriella didn't seem to mind it as much, plotting a story line with her as a mermaid with the shark. It'd been a while since you got the chance to see her be so animated. Throughout the car ride, she couldn't stop talking about how the trip at the aquarium and explaining the exhibits to you in explicit detail. Well, that was until you got to Candice's house. She was quick to leave as soon as she saw her friend waiting outside, her two feet almost too slow to match her energy.
The tension in the air was thick from the moment Gabriella had departed the car but it was much more obvious now that the two of you were stuck in a room together. After making a beeline to go change into a pair of shorts and a shirt—calling it a night, you were surprised to find Miguel still laying on the bed. Idly tapping at his phone with one finger, the faint sound of a Candy Crush!reaching your ears. You figured that he would've left to go monitor the city after spending the day with Gabriella. Maybe he was determined to make it work this time around.
No.
You couldn't start thinking that way just because he bothered to stick around for one evening.
He settled in between your legs, continuing to tap away at the screen. As much as you wanted to protest, you decided not to. From this angle, you could see him struggling with solving level 3976. How much time had he seriously dedicated to this game? Time that he hadn't spent dedicating towards you. Great. Just the thought was enough to piss you off once more. You grabbed your own phone from the bed stand, forcing yourself not to roll your eyes every time one of those stupid family channels showed up. If you had to bet, you'd guess their marriage wasn't that good either.
Miguel looked up at you from his spot in between your legs, with furrowed brows and brown irises practically boring into you. He looked so needy.. so desperate. "Please mamita, I need you. I need to touch you again," he pleaded, his lips leaving a searing sensation as he kissed up your leg. It'd been too long since you'd received any form of intimacy from anything other than your fingers and your vibrator. And while they did get the job done, they didn't exactly offer this kind of foreplay.
He moved the flimsy material of your pajama shorts to the side, kissing the innermost part of your thighs. Your fingers tugged at the strands, trying to pull him to your cunt. With every single teasing breath against the thin material, you could feel yourself clenching around nothing and dripping onto your panties. "Not yet," and the bastard had the nerve to laugh. It was the last sound you heard before you felt a small sting on your thigh, your eyes almost popping out of your skull. When he said he was Spider-Man, you'd been expecting the whole swinging around.
What you hadn't been expecting, however, was a pair of fangs that were almost the same length as your head. Just how far did the extent of these spider powers go? You were thinking of every possibility, unaware that you'd even spaced out. He regained your attention by pulling the waistband of your shorts, the elastic snapping against your skin. "Only thing you have to be focused is on me," he spoke up before you had the chance to say anything, moving to take off your shorts off. You raised your hips, your panties and shorts falling off in one swift motion.
He'd been nothing but desperate earlier, but his touch almost seemed reverent this time around. Kissing up your legs as if you were something to worship, drinking up your gasps as if they were the finest tunes he'd ever listened to. His hands pried your thighs open, leaving you completely exposed to him. Only before he got the chance to lean in was that you got the chance to see just how desperate for this he truly was. His pointer finger ran through your folds, collecting whatever slick had started to accumulate.
"You say you want a divorce but this pretty cunt's telling me a different thing," almost like he was timing it—which he was, he pulled his fingers out of your cunt. A loud squelch echoed through the otherwise silent room, a small groan escaping from your lips. You wouldn't give him the satisfaction of letting him hear your moans. "Let me hear you mamita. Let me hear good I'm making you feel," he prodded, his fingers moving in a scissoring motions. You bit on your bottom lip, a muffled moan escaping your lips.
"Eso, no me nieges. Te lo ruego."
He pulled his fingers out of your cunt, his eyes boring into yours as he licked the glistening slick off them. Practically feining to get every single drop. He leaned in to be face-level with your cunt, licking a stripe up your folds before parting them apart with his tongue. "Oh fuck," the moan slipped out of your lips before you had a chance to think better of it, the small chuckle he let out against your cunt vibrating throughout your body. His head moved from side to side, practically engulfing himself in between your legs with his nose pressing against your clit.
Your legs trembled in his grasp, struggling to keep them open when all you wanted to do was close them around his head. You wanted him to stop. You wanted him to keep going. The constant whiplash was enough to make you into a whining mess underneath him, despite your better judgement. "Please," you didn't even make sense to yourself. You weren't exactly sure what it is that you were even begging for. "Shh, it's okay. I'll give you what you need," and yet, he seemed to understand your pleas perfectly.
His mouth closed around your clit, his eyes boring into yours as he sucked on the neglected nub. Your nails dug into his scalp, a groan escaping from his lips. Like a domino effect, that small groan vibrated against your clit which caused you to only tighten your grip on his hair. You bucked your hips to meet his lips, his grip on your legs tightening. "I got you mamita, just let me take my time pleasing you," he murmured, kissing a trail from your inner thigh to your folds once more. His tongue fell flat, licking a stripe up your glistening folds.
The tip of his tongue prodded at your entrance before the wet muscle pushed inside, your juices leaking down to his mouth almost instantaneously. If anything, he didn't seem to mind it. He almost looked like he was in complete bliss. Miguel made no attempt to continue the ploy he'd started with the eye contact earlier, his eyes shut as he got lost in the taste of your essence. "Oh, Mig, Mig, Mig-" Broken fragments of his name escaped from your lips as his pointer finger rubbed small circles on your clit, the dual stimulation enough to have your toes curling.
You reached down to play with your erect nipples, rolling them in between your fingers. The orgasm you were chasing was so close, so attainable. "Gonna cum, gonna cum," every single word from your vocabulary seemed limited. All you could do was repeat yourself and hope that he would get the picture. "That's it, you got it," he coaxed you into an orgasm, your toes curling and your grip on his hair tightening. If anything, he seemed to revel in how you were gripping him.
Every word at the tip of your tongue failed you as you came with a shudder, your release coating his mouth and chin in the process. Miguel eagerly took every drop that you had to give, even going back into your cunt to get anything that he might've missed. You practically had to push him off before he started to eat you out again. While you knew that he could handle it, you weren't too sure that you could. You let your back hit the mattress, basking in the afterglow from your orgasm.
Before Miguel had the chance to finish with unbuttoning his pants, you took the chance to clear your throat. His hands halted their movements, his eyes shooting up to you like a deer caught in headlights. "With the way you've been acting, do you seriously think you've earned the right to fuck me?" You questioned, seeing his expression visibly deflate as he removed his hands from the buttons. "Please. I'll do anything, mi vida. Es tortura tenerte tan cerca y no poder tocarte," it was a rare sight to see.
Miguel prided himself in being above begging. And yet, here he was.
"Go on and lay on the bed for me," your tone offered no room for protests, his steps quick as he went to lay down on the bed. You trailed your hand from his knee to his crotch, cupping his heavy balls in your palm. "Look at me and tell me you have the right to fuck me, if that's the case," you spoke up, looking over at him as your hand switched from one ball to the other. Giving each the same amount of attention. You watched as he opened his mouth, closed it back up again, and repeated the process until he eventually gave up.
"I can't," he huffed out, almost in a whisper. You reached over in your bedside table, pulling out your trusty vibrator. "And why's that?" You asked him, your touch featherlight when you rubbed the vibrator against the outline of his cock. Just enough to give him a taste of what he could have. "Because I don't deserve to fuck you. I know. But I'm still selfish," he admitted after a while, his words barely above a whisper. Good enough of an answer for now.
A shaky groan escaped from his lips when you turned the vibrator on, the lowest intensity almost too painful to bear. Shudders ran across his body as you rubbed the vibrator on the tip of his cock, sliding it down to his frenulum. "Ngh, don't stop," his voice was practically a whimper by this point, his hips bucking to meet your touch. Not that you allowed for that continue for long though. You pushed your thighs down with one hand, his muscles flexing underneath your grasp.
You moved the vibrator to rest against the tip of his cock, precum leaking onto the tip of it. You tentatively brought it up to your lips, swirling your tongue around it as the familiar salty taste overwhelmed your senses. His eyes were locked on yours, his hips bucking up in some miserable attempt to gain some friction. You set the vibrator back on the tip of his cock, a hiss escaping from his lips. "Turn it up."
"What's the magic word?" You shifted to grab the remote, lowering the intensity despite the groans that escaped from his lips. He looked like he was on the verge of tears, if you had to be honest. Well, the closest he could get to that point anyways. "Pl.." he couldn't finish his sentence, a choked groan escaping from his lips. He looked over at you, like he was expecting you to understand. And while you did, you also wanted him to use his words. Hear how pretty he sounded begging.
"P-Ple-nghh."
“Plea-shockk."
"P-Ay mierda."
It was a cruel game you were playing, you were aware. You kept the vibrator at the same speed, raising a brow as you looked at him. "Sounds like you don't really want it," you taunted, deciding to put the vibrator to the highest level possible. Only for a fraction of a second, though. Just as quickly as relief had come for him, it was gone. He let out a groan, trying to will the word to slip out of his mouth. Just one word.
"Please," it seemed like your little show of motivation had finally paid off. You turned the intensity of the vibrator gradually this time around, allowing him to get used to the sensation. "See what you get when you ask nicely," you decided to taunt him even further despite knowing better. You knew your cunt would be paying the consequences for your relentless teasing later in the night. Not like the thought mattered now, though. Not when you had Miguel begging and at the verge of tears just for your touch.
His balls felt heavy to the touch, almost like he was at the point of cumming. You gave both of them equal attention, rolling them in your hand. Miguel's eyes could only clamp shut, his mouth parted. "Please let me cum, so close," he begged so nicely, a couple drops of precum leaking down to your thigh. You could always be generous and let him cum. Then again, the idea of prolonging his orgasm was just too enticing to resist. Each buck of his hips became more erratic, more needy. Before he got to that point of climax, you pulled the vibrator away from his cock.
"I asked nicely," he pointed out, his voice cracking slightly. He scrambled to sit up, almost searching your expression to see if he'd done something wrong. "I'm aware," you simply responded, wiping your vibrator before placing it on the nightstand to clean it throughly later. "I just didn't feel like letting you," you added, waiting to see if he'd offer more resistance. You could see he wanted to say something, but he was holding himself from saying anything. Smart man.
Miguel set a pillow underneath your stomach, your back set in a mean arch as you laid on it. He stepped behind you, his thumb rubbing against your folds before he dipped it inside. Your wetness immediately engulfed his finger, your walls stretching out as he pushed it deeper inside. "What happened to the attitude you had earlier, hm?" He used the same taunting tone that you had, mocking you. A protest died in your throat as the tip of his cock went inside your folds, your head craning back to look at him.
"Just the t-"
"Yes, yes, just the tip. I promise," he cut you off before you had the chance to finish speaking, rolling his eyes. You were already testing his patience by allowing just the tip. He retracted, the tip of his cock an angry shade of red as precum dripped down his shaft. Your walls clenched and unclenched rhythmically, your own body betraying your resolve. He pushed the tip inside once more, keeping it inside your wet cunt. "Please, let me fuck you properly. You're punishing both of us, not just me."
And here you would've figured that his negotiations were reserved just for the state of Nueva York. You shook your head, determined to see this through. "If it's not enough for you, we can just stop here," And how you wished your voice would've come out with more bite. Now you sounded just as needy as he did. Maybe even more. "No, no, it's fine," he was quick to respond, retracting. It was almost painful how slow he was going, almost making you want to give up on this whole argument. Getting stubborn wasn't getting you anywhere.
"Please let me fuck you properly," he pleaded after a couple thrusts, his hands on your hips. Well. At least you didn't have to give in first. "Fine," you tried to sound annoyed, though you weren't convincing him any better than you were yourself. A strangled gasp left your mouth as he bottomed out, your cunt stretched out to the brim. Your walls clenched against his shaft rhythmically, trying to get used to the intrusion. Your hands reached over for the pillow above you, your grip on it tightening as he pulled out.
His skin slapped against your own with each thrust that he made, his grip on your hips tightening. "Don't stop, Mig! So, so good," he'd turned you into a babbling mess within a matter of seconds. "Wasn't planning on it," he responded quickly, each word punctuated with a harsh thrust. You craned your head to look at him, the sight having a new wave of arousal coat his cock. His head was lolled back, his face contorted into one of pure pleasure. You rocked your hips to match his rhythm to the best of his ability, your ass smacking against his hips with every movement.
"Oh shock, slow down," he was mesmerized by the sight of your ass rippling with each move that you made, one of his hands reaching down to cup the flesh. "Not gonna last long if you keep at it," he added, raising his hand before giving your ass a slap. The mixture of pain and pleasure mixed together, your own release starting to approach. "Fill me up, Mig!" You could only whine that out, a groan escaping from his lips at your words. The hand on your ass moved down to your clit, his thumb rubbing on the nub in circles. Fervent circles to match the pace of his sloppy thrusts.
You clamped tightly around his cock, your arousal coming out of you in waves. Your stomach hit the pillow underneath you, your body giving out on you. As soon as you clamped around him, Miguel knew his own orgasm wasn't too far off. With one final thrust, he shot his cum up your cunt. Filling you up like you'd asked. He pulled his flaccid cock out of you a couple moments later, his chest heaving as he tried to catch his breath. His fingers pushed back the cum threatening to drip down before he went over to get a wet towel to clean you up.
"It shouldn't take me threatening to divorce you for you to get your act together," you spoke up once you managed to catch your breath, wiping the sweat off your forehead. Not exactly the topic that you would've imagined talking about after sex. But you figured it was important for him to know that just a good lay wouldn't be enough to resolve this issue. He swiped his arm over his forehead, wiping away at nonexistent sweat beads. Something to do while he tried to figure out what to say.
"I know. And I'm sorry that it ever got to this point, I promise that I'll spend the rest of my life trying to prove to you how worthy I am to be next to you," he spoke up after a few moments, turning to face you. His hands itched to be wrapped around you, for some semblance of that intimacy that he'd neglected for so long. But he didn't make any effort to touch you. He knew it'd take a while for you to get to that point. The conflicted expression on your face was enough to tell him that you didn't believe him.
And it's not like you were looking forward to starting any issues between the two of you. But with the amount of empty promises and "I'm sorry's", you figured that you'd earned the right to doubt him. You got up, putting up your pajamas in an attempt to divert the conversation. You didn't want to voice that you were worried about him failing to fulfill his promise. "I know you don't believe me, but I promise I'll do my best to prove it to you," he whispered, pulling the blanket over the two of you before exhaustion overtook your body.
Instead of the usual emptiness that you'd grown used to waking up to, you found Miguel laying by your side with his arms tightly wrapped around your body. Like he didn't want to let you go. "I can feel you staring," he mumbled, half asleep as he begun to stir. He kept one arm wrapped around you, bringing the other hand up to his face to rub his eyes. "Just surprised you're not at work yet," you responded, pushing a couple stray hairs away from his forehead. "Well, I'm trying to prioritize my family a bit more."
His promises didn't feel as empty as the ones he'd spoken about before. He seemed determined to bring them into fruition this time around. Or at least you hoped that he would. For you and Gabriella. "I know it doesn't amount to much with how many times I've said it, but I really am sorry for neglecting you for so long. I got so carried away into maintaining the safety of Nueva York that I forgot to maintain my own marriage."
"I know you can't be everywhere at once. Me and Gabriella are aware you have responsibilities but still.. I don't want to have to feel like I'm being selfish for asking for some time with my husband," you spoke up after a couple seconds, looking over at him. Neither of you made any attempt to leave your bed just yet, too engulfed in the temporary state of bliss. "And you won't have to feel that way anymore, I promise."
Maybe things would work out for the better this time around.

WARDROBE MALFUNCTION.
If Miguel had something to be annoyed of, it had to be you.
The ticking of the clock stroke 2:30 PM for their weekly briefing, to which Miguel stood there impatiently waiting for the rest of his crew to show up. Slowly did they trickle in, in groups of twos and threes, but as his eyes scanned the said groups, you were no where in sight… Again.
“Where are they?” He inquired, head slowly turned to Hobie who was situated beside him. Hobie let out a deep exhale, proceeding to stretch his back momentarily before speaking.
“Beats me,” and with that, Miguel let out a scoff.
“Lyla…“ He pressed a hand over his forehead, rubbing at his temples annoyedly. Surely Lyla would be able to hunt you down, the cameras were set up basically everywhere. That was Miguel’s plan of action until loud footsteps became more audible by the second.
You bursted through the doorway, stumbling over your feet as you clambered back up.
“Am I late?” You asked timidly, scratching your nape gently. Hobie tried to stifle a laugh and coughed into his fist, and rotated his reddened face away as he moved along on the wheeled chair.
Peter, who strolled into the room not too long after you appeared, looked at you while letting Mayday play with the tips of his fingers.
“Just in time,” he responded with a smile following after, and a light sarcastic tone to add. With hesitant steps and eyes circled with fatigue, you found yourself plopping at the nearest table on the verge to pass out. Peter took that as a sign to carefully approach you.
A hushed whisper came close to your ear, “everything alright, kiddo?”
You jolted and blinked your eyes rapidly to rid of the blurriness.
“Yeah, yeah… I’m good,” you said tiredly and rested your chin on your elbow, “why do you ask?”
“The ‘I-haven’t-slept-for-days’ look is getting to you. C’mon, don’t pretend we can’t see those ten-pound bags hanging under your eyes! What’s been going on?” Peter asked and looked at you quizzically, head shaking in contemplation whether or not you’ve managed to eat breakfast as well.
“Been trying to figure out a new design for my suit, can you tell it hasn’t been going so grand?” You joked, emphasizing the trial super suit part. Yes, you’ve decided to take on the task of finally putting more importance on the suit that should’ve been well-made and well-kept. If it weren’t for an unfortunate incident where your suit sliced through in a battle, then perhaps you wouldn’t be sitting there about to nod off in fatigue.
Peter placed a comforting hand on your shoulder which Mayday found exciting, and instantly crawled from his back across to your body. The babbling of the small child evoked a small smile from you and you took her into your arms, cooing and toying with her long locks.
“Hey, you could’ve asked me about the suit! You know I have a couple of my own,” he commented, noting the vast array of designs he created. You merely laughed it off, however.
“Peter, you’re like… Bigger than my own stature, don’t you think?” You replied and chuckled in between your words. The man in question was about to let out the most defensive statement, but to your luck — perhaps — Peter was interrupted by a loud cough.
“M-Miguel! So, when’s this meeting going to start?” Peter instantly perked up at the sight of the gigantic man who stood behind him. Small pellets of sweat started to form slightly over his forehead.
Miguel crossed his arms and scowled, grumbling, “the two of you were talking through it, yeah?”
You gave Miguel an apologetic smile before you turned to Mayday, still giggling within your arms. Peter rotated his body to fully face Miguel.
“Sorry about that, see we—“ He stopped and his eyes widened at the sight before him. A soft smile graced Miguel’s face as his attention was fully on you and Mayday, his eyes narrow… But softened. This was a sight that Peter didn’t think he would see, ever. Miguel slightly shook his head and cleared his throat, his expression back to how it was previously.
“We will resume,” he ordered, taking heavy steps back to the front of the room. Peter was left there dumbfounded and to be quite frank — amused. He took Mayday from your arms as she was reaching over towards him and gave you a knowing smile.
“I think I know how to help your little… Suit problem,” he added and placed Mayday back into her carrier. You cocked your head to the side and raised an eyebrow. Peter was always so helping towards you so you of course didn’t complain, however, this time something felt off.
You leaned back into your chair, curiously looking at Miguel pointing towards a hologram board with lousy penmanship and scribbles indicating what you assume are location points.
“And that would be?” You asked, head still turned towards the board in boredom. Peter only chuckled, and shifted his weight on his forearms that was placed on the table.
“I can ask ole’ Mig over there,” he spoke quietly, nodding his head in Miguel’s direction. “He’s quite the hands-on and organized guy, he would know what to help you with.”
A sarcastic scoff left your mouth at his words, stating, “you really think he would help me out?”
“One hundred percent.”
You smiled at his honesty and bold comment. Miguel wasn’t the type to just help out on a whim, hell, he isn’t the type to even have a conversation normally. You let out a huff and rolled your eyes, turning your attention once again to Peter.
“Can’t wait to be rejected, I guess,” you muttered, and continued to listen to the rest of the meeting.
Though it wasn’t immediately, Peter came up to you a couple hours later, stating that Miguel agreed to help you out. Well, it just took a couple hours of agonizing pestering from the man to finally make Miguel cave in.
“C’mon! What is a superhero without their suit, eh?” Peter’s voice boomed throughout the empty lab he was situated in, along with Miguel and Lyra, who was chuckling away at his seventh time of convincing.
Miguel let out a sigh, irritation threaded between his eyebrows and his patience on the verge of breaking. “For the last time, no.”
The latter crossed his arms and scowled at the six-foot-nine man. “Fine, fine… Hobie can help them out, ooh perhaps Miles… Maybe Jen,” Peter trailed off, curiosity in his eyes as he peered over to Miguel. Lyra let out a deep exhale, obviously tired of seeing her partner in crime in denial.
“Just do it,” Lyra groaned, rolling her eyes widely, “You’re really a stubborn guy, I think we both know what is really going on with you.”
Peter nodded his head gleefully and seemed proud that he wasn’t the only one noticing his… Strange behaviour towards you.
“What do ya say, tough guy?” He smirked and exchanged glances with Lyra, who also was puffing her chest out in pride.
Silence filled the room as the two awaited for Miguel’s response, and his answer left them internally rejoicing of accomplishment.
“Fine.”
----
“— And he happily agreed!” Peter finished his sentence off and you— on the other hand— stood there with a hand on your hip and one eyebrow raised in the air. The both of you were standing in the hallway when Peter stopped you suddenly, him resting his hands on his knees to catch his breath.
“Funny story,” you replied sarcastically, still not believing that the Miguel O’Hara happily agreed to assist you.
He slumped his shoulders at your response and scowled. “Hey, I went through that work! Can I get some sort of ‘Hey, thanks Peter! You’re the best!’ or something along those lines.”
You chuckled at his grumbling and clasped your hands behind your back, finally relieved about getting the weight off your back.
“Okay, okay… Thanks Peter! You really are the best!” You beamed, giggling away in delight.
Peter gave you a genuine smile and you notice his smile turned into a smirk as his eyes glanced over your head. He placed a hand on your shoulder and chuckled.
“Well, gotta get going… Mayday needs some grub in her system, adios!” He hinted and turned on his heel, quickly scampering away. You watched as his figure left the area until a low voice startled you.
“Hey.”
You turned around to see Miguel standing closely behind you, piercing eyes looking down at your figure.
“Oh, hi,” you wavered and looked up, the size difference clearly obvious.
He rubbed a hand at his nape and exclaimed, “Peter told me you were in need of help for your suit, what is the issue?”
You nodded. “Well, I’ve been trying to get the mechanics right. Everytime I try to shoot a web out, it ends up being caught in my suit or my lenses end up failing on me.”
Miguel hummed in acknowledgment, shifting his weight to one foot. “I am free in around four hours if you would like… I can assist you fully then,” he added.
A wide smile appeared on your face, and you chirped. “I would love that, thank you.”
He simply nodded his head, eyes flickered between you and the slightly torn suit you had on. It was a nasty gash, one that reached from one side of your back to the other, with tinier ones littered around it.
"Seemed like one hell of a battle," he exclaimed and pointed out the open areas around your body. You reached a hand over to the one on your arm, covering it in embarrassment.
"Duty called," you stated and rubbed your arm. "I didn't think it would be this bad though."
Miguel let out a laugh in response, a low and vibrating chuckle emitted from his chest.
“l also blame Lyla," he said awkwardly and the tips of his ears flushed a light pink. You flashed him another smile and crossed your arms.
"Well, I take that your apology is you helping me with my suit," you teased, finding his tensed-up behaviour quite amusing. Miguel looked at you endearingly.
"I do hope that it'll suffice," he added while gazing down at you. "I think the new suit will fit nicely too."
You stared at Miguel in awe. Not for the fact of him helping you out or him being nice, but because he truly wasn't like what everyone was saying. Sure, he acted in a despicable way, but he had intentions for what he knew was to be right. It was a realistic approach— If he truly wanted to help out, he absolutely would with no hesitation. And here he was, giggling next to you. Miguel seemed to notice you staring and he broke off your little daydream.
"Something on my face... Or?" He inquired.
"Nothing," you said calmly, another smile laced on your face. "Nothing at all."
Kinktober day 7/8: Size difference + breeding: Miguel O’Hara x reader
Warnings/tags: afab reader, no pronouns but usage of “wife” once. Kinda short, mentions of pregnancy, breeding, size differences, fucking his cum back into you
Honestly, are we really surprised? Of course I used Miguel for these prompts, who else would I use?
Miguel couldn’t help but adore the way you looked beneath him. So tiny, so much smaller than him. So vulnerable, so helpless, so pitiful as you were stretched out on his cock.
The way he could fill you up with cum till you looked stuffed and thoroughly bred, until your belly bulged out and you looked half-pregnant already. He couldn’t help but admire the sight infront of him- one that belonged to solely him… only to thrust right back into you, smirking as you cried in overstimulation, greedily fucking his own cum deeper into you.
No matter how much you squirmed and whined, you both knew Miguel wouldn’t be stopping till he was sure his seed had taken inside of you… and there was nothing you could do to escape, not with the absolute raw physical difference between you two.
The way he towered over you like no one else. How a single one of his hands could easily pin both your wrists above your head, leaving his other hand free to touch and explore.
Really, you should just accept your fate as Miguel’s. Forever.
Miguel’s…. what though? His wife? His bitch? His pregnant little toy?
Simple answer: Yes.
A/n: kinda unhappy that this is so short… I have a sinus infection though. I may add to this once I’m feeling better. Also, it’s kinda funny that I wrote this right after making my previous post.

“quiet, baby,” miguel’s deep voice whispers, looking down at you as he towers over, hips thrusting in and out of you like there’s no tomorrow. “don’t wanna get caught now, do we?” he purrs, gently smoothly down your pretty hair with his large hand, it slowly coming down to tip your face up to look at him.
the callouses tickle your chin, strangely adding to the sensuality, and you can’t help but whine, it’s building like a fury in you, the knot tightening and not coming undone. you try to say his name, too much of a struggle though, even to bubble out his nickname, and when you do try, it just comes out as a random spew of incoherent language only decipherable as moans and whimpers.
“yeah, baby? what is it?” he looks so good like this. lazy smirk emphasising his soft dimples, the shine of his fanged canines and the sultriness of his voice. his pretty chestnut hair sticking to his sweat slicked forehead, humidity volumising the locks and heaving them down so that he looked like he just came out the shower, all steamy and smelling so good.
but you know how miguel can get ahead of himself. how you’re ‘too much’ and he just ‘can’t help it’ when he’s balls deep inside you. the way he looks at you when peter babbles stupid babyish words with mayday and times when he randomly says things like ‘solana sounds like a pretty name for a girl, don’t you think?’ so it’s your responsibility, despite the eyes-rolling-into your-skull feeling of his dick inside you, to prevent an…accident.
“miguel. pull out.” you just barely sound out through swallows of saliva from how good he’s bruising your pussy.
he benignly chuckles: “i’m not sure if i want to, baby.” he groans at the tightening of your pussy, cursing in spanish about the feeling.
“you feel way too fucking good, and you’d make such a pretty mama,” he rubs your belly and coos at you with only your helpless hums of the prefix syllable ‘m’: gibberish to anyone— but miguel’s not just anyone. he’s quick-witted and reads you like a book and he knows, in your own fucked-out, drunk-on-sex way, you’re trying to say his name. so he indulges.
“say something, baby,” he kisses you passionately with cognisance— “i know you wanna fucking say something,”
his hips slam into you so harshly, it makes your heart jump up and down in your rib cage: so fierce.
“miguel…”
he bounces you up further into him, hands stretching the plushness of your ass.
you lull your head over his shoulder, it’s too heavy to keep upright, and your lips graze his ear, your sweet moans pumping blood through him faster and thicker than anything ever could.
he softly speaks, eyes darting to his lower left corner, “what is it? what do you need, honey?” unlike his earlier cocky manner, there’s a genuineness weaved in his tone.
your moans only hiccup as a response, the up- down oscillation stirring arousal in your womb, low and deep, clouding your mind.
he comes straight out with it, fervour in his lilt, “you want me to fuck a baby into you? mmm? is that what it is?”
he bucks his hips into you so suddenly and your eyes squint shut and your breaths divide into shorter, more frequent inhale-exhales and so desperately do you voice a meek: “yes.”
so lovingly does he kiss your cheek, the soft pop finalising his thorough ploughs and he comes ropes, gelling up your velvety, plush insides.
he rubs his hand against your belly like before, presses into it and doughs the flesh, prideful with what he’s accomplished.
“you feel that, baby? you can almost see it.” he kisses your neck then your lips, nourishing the tiny little scratches he left nipping your skin earlier.
he thinks a few smooches is enough but once he starts he can’t stop, he can’t fucking stop. your lips against his just remind him of how much he’s in love with you, how he bleeds for you, thinks of you. how it all feels like a dream even while everything around him is tangible. your soft lips, your cinched waist, the slope of your neck, and the absolute heaven of you sucking him in just so good.
“look at what you do to me.” he reminds you through firm kisses.
“i know.” you kiss back, hands toying with his hair.
“i want it again. i wanna come in you again.” he lowly breathes, like confessing a sin: addicted.
you rub your nose against his cheek and your lips find his ear again, whispering in oh-so-sultry ways: “okay.”

Let’s start from the beginning one last time.
My name is Miguel O’Hara, and in an experiment gone wrong, my genetic code was partially rewritten with Spider DNA, giving me superpowers.
My home is Earth 928-C where I was the one and only Spiderman... of my home dimension at least.
I invented and built a dimensional travel device that allowed me to jump between universes with the goal of exploring the limits of the multiverse.
And then I met a woman in this other world who nearly died from a crazy freak accident.
I saved her of course.
Then I saved her again.
And again, and again.
... And again.
We fell in love, and I decided to stay with her in her world.
You know the rest. We got married. We had a life together.
I was happy. Really happy.
For a while.
[Earth 383-D]
"Goddamn idiot bird," Miguel mutters under his breath.
Vulture is on the loose again, wreaking havoc on the city. The maniac is flying high above the city grounds, leaving a trail of mayhem in his wake.
Miguel's been in pursuit for the better half of two hours. In that time, the bird has derailed the High Line, literally hit a traffic light and managed to knock over the spire on the Statue of Liberty as if he was flying under the influence.
Then somehow flew across town through Tribeca, along Lower Manhattan and Greenwich Village and now reached all the way to Midtown Manhattan.
Dumbass ugly stupid bird.
Miguel digs his claws into the exterior of the limestone and granite of the Empire State Building to steady himself, using the momentum to leap forward.
The Vulture crashes into a skyscraper 50 feet ahead of Miguel, and in the mad dash, he can see a man tumble out of the building head first to the ground from the 30th floor.
Swinging forward, Miguel slings out a web from his palm, catching the screaming and sobbing office worker in midair and lands briefly against the windowpane. He ensures the man is secured to the building in a cocoon of webbing until the fire department can get him to safer grounds.
Miguel doesn't even get a second to catch his breath. From afar, he can pick up the sound of another window being crashed into by the unwieldy metal bird.
Crap.
It's impossible for Miguel to both chase the Vulture and keep everyone else in his path of destruction safe. One superhero can't be in two places at once (none that he has encountered).
Gritting his teeth, Miguel leaps off the building swinging freely into the air to make up on the lost ground between him and the metallic cuckoo bird.
He needs backup, and the backup is unfortunately running late.
Where is he? Why is he always late?
Does that man not understand that when someone calls for backup because of an emergency, the emergency part indicates that there's some urgency to it?
Flying through the air 100 feet above the ground, from the corner of his eyes, Miguel catches the familiar garish red flowing cape that billows from the cowl of the grand cloak and suit.
Miguel would know that weird wizard get-up anywhere.
"Strange!" Miguel calls out, and he can feel irritation rattle in his chest. "You're late! Where the shock were you?"
"The word you're looking for is 'fuck.' Where the fuck was I," the man responds with a sarcastic drawl.
Strange levitates through the air, effortlessly without expending any energy at all as he catches up with Miguel. "You gave me no notice. Be happy I showed up at all."
From a distance he sees the dumb bird soar high up into the sky and towards the all too familiar crowned roof of the Chrysler building.
No. nononono.
Why is he there? What is he doing there? Anywhere but there.
His back flashes cold then burning hot as the Vulture makes a straight beeline for the familiar building.
It’s fine. Maybe he’s not going to fly in there. Maybe he’s just going to fly past it.
Miguel watches as the metallic bird soars up and up and up, past the midpoint of the building, past the 40th floor of your office and up to the 50th floor. The tight squeeze in his chest eases.
Then the vulture stops, mid-flight and looks down below, as if he changed his mind, before he descends again.
Shit! Shit! SHIT!
He dives into one of the windows between the 40th and 50th floor. The sound of broken glass and shrill screams can be heard even from where Miguel is.
Blood freezes in his veins and nausea overtakes him. Calm down. Breathe.. Maybe you’re not in. After all, Lyla’s security protocols would’ve been activated by now if you were. He would’ve been alerted.
Soaring through the skies, Miguel reaches over to his wrist to punch in the dial for Lyla to check in and reassure himself you're safe. But his tracker blinks back in an alarming red, and he darts down his head towards the display.
Error.
His heart stops.
The flying silhouette reappears through the shattered windows and the metallic harness strapped onto the vulture gleams bright against the sun.
It’s only then it hits him. Lyla's been deactivated by the madman's stupid Electro-Magnetic Harness.
Why hadn't he foreseen that as a technical flaw?
Against the reflective glass panes, Miguel sees you, caught in the Vulture talons like a mouse captured by a large predatory bird. Every hair on his neck stands on end. His vision bleeds into red, blood roaring at the sight of it.
Kill him.
Miguel's gonna murder that freak for touching you. Crush his windpipe so he can't ever squawk again, then rip his throat out with his claws and feed it to the street pigeons for good measure.
Launching himself through the air, Miguel tears up the side of the building. The tempered glass beneath his claws and feet, shatters into sharp jagged pieces as he closes the distance.
He is almost within reach. Only some 30 feet that still separates you from him. Leaping the final distance he slams hard into the side of the Vulture until metal crunches beneath his feet.
Miguel roars until his throat burns with it. Palms gripping at the man’s jaw and prying it back to get at his bare throat. His fangs are ready to sink into the jugular. He can see the dark pupil of Vulture's eyes dilate with fear.
Good. Miguel's anger will be the last thing this freak sees.
"Miguel calm down," Strange shouts at him from behind. "You're gonna knock her off."
Miguel freezes at the warning, forcing himself to hold still as he looks down to where you are dangling precariously from the Vulture's claws.
"Be ready," Strange shouts, and Miguel looks to him, not understanding what the hell he means.
Strange rests his hand over the shiny blue gem hanging around a chain from his neck.
What does he mean by be ready? What is Strange going to do?
"What'd you mea–"
Miguel doesn't have a chance to finish the rest of his sentence. An unnatural force vibrates through him. A pulsating wave that pervades his senses, punching through his lungs and knocks him back.
In an instance, you're propelled away from Strange and the Vulture, and you are freefalling towards the ground below.
Miguel leaps mid-air, arms outstretched to catch you as you plummet towards the ground below. His fingers clasps around your wrists, your warm skin against his fingertips.
He's got you!
Taking hold of you by the arm, Miguel pulls you into his chest as he wraps one arm securely around your waist.
Immediate relief fills him from the inside out as the adrenaline and the searing anger is already starting to fade now that he knows you're safe.
"You okay, nena?" he asks.
You nod, arms finding purchase around the back of his neck, and squeeze down tight. He swings you both to the safety of a nearby rooftop.
There's barely time for him to touch the surface, he hears the nearby explosion and sees Vulture crash into the concrete wall of the nearest building.
Strange is levitating nearby, hands making wild gestures, presumably to perform some hocus pocus ritual. There’s a magical glow as strobes of light manifest out of thin air surrounding the Vulture from all sides and wrapping around him in a restraining bind.
Miguel sets you down. You're a little bit wobbly on your feet, and seeing you stumble the way you do has that protective streak spark anew in his chest.
Stupid Strange. He can't just do shit like that.
What if Miguel hadn't reacted in time? What if you had fallen?
This is why Miguel hates working with the guy, even if they’re friends. Always on his moral high horse about Miguel being reckless, then he pulls shit like this.
"Everyone alright?" Strange asks as he levitates through the sky to set feet close to you both on the rooftop.
Miguel grits his teeth with annoyance at the man’s casual demeanor when he nearly threw you out of the sky.
"Shock you, Strange," he spits out.
"Miggy..." you sigh in a reprimanding tone next to him.
Stephen shakes his head at him. "I told you. It's fuck"
"Fuck you, Strange."
Sanctum Sanctorum is closer than home and Strange has, comfortable sofas in his ridiculously big mansion. Big enough sofas that Miguel can actually lounge in them comfortably without it feeling cramped. It's why, given the choice, he always prefer to regroup there, over your tiny apartment.
Besides, while the man's control over his magical powers can be suspect at times, he used to be a doctor. Supposedly one of the leading brain surgeons in the world, and Miguel is a lot more comfortable at the prospect of Strange giving you a checkover to make sure you don't need further medical attention than trying your luck at one of the local ERs.
"Follow my finger," Strange says as he shines a little flashlight into your eyes and moves his index from side to side.
Your eyes follow him dutifully, and Strange proceeds with the rest of his medical check, asking you the boring standard questions. "Any symptoms of dizziness, lightheadedness, or a sense of vertigo?"
He fires them out in rapid succession, and a bit too perfunctory for Miguel's liking.
"Noticed any changes in your vision, blurriness or double vision, etcetera etcetera?"
Miguel's jaw tic in irritation at how Strange is putting in minimal effort and just going through the motions.
"Yeah, you're fine." Strange pats your knees, then whisks the flashlight away into nothingness with his cape.
That medical check wasn't anything close to thorough. Miguel crosses his arms over his chest. "Are you sure? Her feet were wobbly before, I wanted to make sure she didn't sprain her ankle."
"A little bit overprotective as always aren't we?" Strange says.
Miguel shoots the man a glare and Stephen sighs, "Her reflexes are fine, I don't think anything's sprained."
"Check again, you seemed sloppy," Miguel accuses.
"You know, I'm doing this as a favor because you’re a friend. Do you have any idea how much a medical examination by one of the leading neurological surgeons in the world would cost you normally?"
"I'll have Lyla transfer the money."
“No, it’s not actually about money just–" Stephen shakes his head, then sighs. "Nevermind.”
He gestures for you to drape your leg across his lap, then he reaches over to gently assess your ankle as requested.
"What is this necklace?" You ask. You lean closer to Strange, inspecting the blue gem where it rests against his chest.
Strange swats at your hand, the way an adult scolds a child with sticky chocolate smeared hands trying to touch the fine china.
"It's a protection amulet. When activated it forms a protective barrier that forcibly repels everything within ten feet of you."
"Huh," you reach back for the amulet undaunted by the earlier reprimand, fascinated and clearly enamored by it. "I'll give you fifty bucks for it."
Strange looks offended. "It's not for sale, and if it was it would certainly be worth a lot more than fifty dollars. It's a genuine magical artifact, not fake costume jewelry from the theater department."
You purse your lips, considering the amulet.
"Forty," you offer.
Miguel has to choke back a snorting laughter in his throat at the way Stephen's eyes goes wide in confused outrage.
"Wait, why is the price going down?"
“We’re in the middle of an economic crisis, Stephen,” you counter.
Strange's head darts over to where Miguel sits, presumably for backup, but he's knocked on the wrong door. The man must be mad if he thinks that there is ever a world where Miguel would side against you.
"Strange, we both know it’s easier if you just give her the amulet." Miguel says.
The man sighs, shaking his head in defeat.
"Be careful with it," he says as he drags the chain over his head to place it in your awaiting palms. "And don't lose it like the invisibility amulet with Mysterio. Had to spend a whole month clearing up your mess when that creep used it to get into the women's locker rooms at every local gym in Greenwich!"
"That wasn’t my mess! Miggy lost that one during an aerial fight. You can't blame that on me."
"You married him, so you're responsible for him. I consider you two jointly to blame."
"Now you're just lashing out," you shoot back.
Miguel watches the two of you in patient boredom, his head propped up by an elbow on the arm of the sofa. He expended way too much energy during the fight, and now he needs to refuel.
If Miguel leaves you two to it, you'll spend an eternity bantering, the way you do. His stomach growls. He wants food. Wants wantons and beef ho fun and a dozen custard salted egg buns for dessert. And the longer you two are at it, the longer it's going to take for him to get it.
"Nena," he calls out, "I'm hungry. Are you two done? I want to go for dinner."
You shoot Miguel a quick smile, pulling out your wallet and take out a wad of green bills then fold it into Strange's hand with a happy grin.
Strange looks down at the crumpled up money in his hand. "Wait, you're only giving me thirty? I thought we said forty."
"You still owe me like ten bucks from mini golf last week."
Strange pockets the money with a grumble. "Unbelievable."
“C’mon,” Miguel says as he stands up and gestures to the both of you with a curt nod of his head towards the door. “Let’s go. I’ll pay for dinner this time,” Miguel says, and that seems to abate Strange’s outrage somewhat as the man grabs your coat from the sofa cushions and offers it to you.
Life on Earth 383-D is strange.
Life here is borderline primitive. The technology is something out of the stone ages.
Social media is a wasteland. Reality TV is a dystopian concept. And he doesn't understand who Kardashian is or why everyone is obsessed with her and her family.
He does like fax machines though. They are basically teleportation machines and it boggles him that the people of your dimension do not seem to understand its potential.
The one thing he will give this version of earth credit for is that the food here is nice. Everyone in his home dimension is too health conscious, and fried food has long been banned by the government for the long term damage it does to the cardiovascular system.
He also likes the life that the two of you have built together here. You have a home in that tiny shoebox apartment. You have friends. Strange friends. Like the Doctor who flies around with the help of a magic cape and now practices the mystic arts after a gap year in Asia. A young girl whose main superpower is the ability to communicate with squirrels. Then there’s that ugly red-masked wise-cracking, katana-wielding maniac who never dies.
Sadly, your friends are not the only thing that is strange about your surroundings.
Miguel perches himself on top of the Chrysler building sitting hunched over on the ledge of the roof. He’s drained and bone-tired, chasing down a helicopter that had gone haywire and was hurtling towards your office building.
Luckily Strange was able to assist and sent it through a magic portal to crash into the Atlantic without putting any lives at stake.
"Just had to do some cleaning up," Strange says as he sets his boots back down on the ground.
Miguel doesn't answer him, staring out at the city view and the setting sun as he takes a well earned breather for a moment or two. New York is a bit of a shit hole, but it does look pretty from a high viewpoint, especially when the sun is setting, Miguel has to give this city that.
It's silent between the two of them. Or at least it is until Strange decides to break it with a harkle of his throat. When Miguel doesn't react the man does it again, coughing discreetly in a clear attempt to get his attention.
Miguel doesn't say anything about the man's sore throat. He ran out of the lemon drops you bought him as snacks hours ago, but he does tilt his head up at the man.
"She's been getting into a lot of these incidents lately. More than usual, more than any normal human for it to be a coincidence" Strange says.
The whole of Miguel's back stiffens.
"Have you noticed the abnormal uptick in strange unexplainable supernatural occurrences lately? Indoor tornadoes. The rain of poisonous frogs outside of whole foods. A sinkhole appearing right next to the cafe your wife frequents."
Miguel doesn't love the insinuations. Even with his lips pressed tightly together, Miguel can feel the small muscle in his jaw flex like a nervous tic at the mention of it. Because yeah, he's noticed, kind of hard to miss when your wife's life is in constant peril at all hours of the day.
Ice storms in July that hit right outside your workplace. An inexplicable solar flare causing a blackout that had every single vehicle within a 5 miles radius go haywire in the dark near your apartment. A swarm of mutated mosquitoes with a venomous bite that chased you down Central Park.
The incidents are occurring more frequently. They are also getting increasingly bizarre and dangerous.
No one can say it’s just bad luck when the daily occurrences around you are defying the very laws of nature itself. Something isn't right with the universe, and he's not sure what else there is to do except pretend that everything is still ok.
"What are you implying?" Miguel asks through gritted teeth.
But for the first time in the years that Miguel has known him, Strange's talkativeness is nowhere to be found. He doesn't answer Miguel. He's smart that way, the clever bastard. Knows that if he says one wrong word, Miguel is going to unhinge his jaws like a feral alligator and snap at him.
Strange has said what he needed for Miguel to know exactly what he's getting at. The man just meets his eyes with an intentional stare, not shying away from Miguel's glare.
It's not like the thought hasn't crossed Miguel's mind. Not like it hasn't been keeping him up at night, every night.
Even though you've always been accident prone and suffered from bad luck, at this point it's a mathematical impossibility that anyone would run into as many near death incidents as you have.
This isn't by chance. It's by design. Miguel's suspected as much for a while now. He just doesn't know whose design and why.
"It's not her fault," Miguel spits out.
"I never said it was."
"Even if what you are saying is true..." Miguel stops, and stares down at his fisted palms with a sinking feeling in his guts. "There's nothing she can do about it to stop it. You can't put that on her."
"Whether she knows about it or not, if it's true, none of this is going to go away.
Strange walks over to where Miguel is, sitting down next to him.
"It’s been escalating in severity," he continues. "There are strange universal energies attached to her. There’s warping of the universal order and space around her. We don't know how bad this can get, if we don’t do anything about this, it could unravel the fabric of reality itself."
Despite the calamity of what Strange is implying, his voice is even and calm as he says it as if he might as well be discussing the weather. That trait has always annoyed the shit out of Miguel.
"What are you planning to do if this continues?" Strange asks.
It's such a silly question. Strange says it as if this is a multiple choice question. But for Miguel there's only one correct answer.
"Protect her. I have to. She's everything to me."
Miguel is staring into the sunset bu all he sees before him is your face even though you aren’t here. The happy smile that he wants to preserve forever. He tries to fight the ache that's building in him at the thought that it would go away.
"Strange, don't tell her. Please. She doesn't need that burden."
He fists his palms into his side.
Miguel never liked asking for help, but even he knows that if what Strange is saying is true. That if the universe for some unfathomable reason wants you dead, then he's going to need all the help he can get.
If Strange has figured it out. Then it's only a matter of time before others do as well.
Soon enough, you won't just have the universe coming after you but every superhero and villain combined in a united front to take out the common threat that you pose to this entire universe.
Even Miguel knows he can't do this alone and as much as that helplessness tastes like failure and bile in his throat, he can swallow his pride if it helps keep you safe.
"Stephen, you have to help me save her."
From behind, Strange rests one hand on the corner of his shoulder. The weight of it feels like a promise being made. For the first time in a long time, Miguel feels like he can breathe just a little bit easier.
"I will do what I can, my friend."
Weeks go by. There are more incidents. Runaway vehicles that go haywire. Electrical storm fires. Rain of poisonous locusts.
Somehow he manages to protect you from it all.
It just means that he has to be more vigilant, that's all. The universe doesn't rest and neither does Miguel now. Lyla has been set on constant alert to wake him up whenever he's napping at any small signs of abnormal occurrences happening near you, with an electric shock to make sure he wakes. Something the A.I. is taking a worryingly amount of glee in (which probably means he needs to retune her programming when he has time).
And today, today Miguel was meant to have a Sunday lie in. Universe be willing, his goal was to sleep all the way into the late afternoon and then you had promised to take him to IHOP and get him all the pancakes he could eat for late breakfast.
But right now he's not asleep. He's trying to. But there are hushed words and whispered murmurs, buzzing in his ear that keeps trying to drag him away from sleep.
It's you and Strange.
Judging from the distance of the noises, you're both standing outside in the hall. The fact that you two are trying to be quiet makes it worse. If you'd spoken in normal volume he could tune it out as white noise, but the conspiratorial quietness of it all makes the hair on the back of his neck tingle with alertness.
Fuck's sake. He swears to god if you two are gossiping and making fun of Hercules’ costume (or the lack of it) again.
It's too early for this crap. Don't you two know that people are trying to sleep? He was up all night chasing crazy Kraven worshippers releasing animals from the Brooklyn zoo. Miguel had to gather wild zebras and crocodiles all the way down East Village til 4am.
With a groan, he drags himself halfway up along the mattress, about to go and growl at you both to be quiet, when the cluttered noises register as words and the fuzziness of sleep clears momentarily.
"He'd destroy this world for you."
Huh? What are you two talking about?
Miguel's too groggy to make sense of the context of what's being said. Even with his super hearing he has to focus to make out the words.
"You can't let him."
Irritated, he gets out of bed and walks to the front door to swing it open. The first thing he sees is you standing with Strange in the hallway. You jump at the suddenness and look up at him with wide eyes.
You have the worst poker face of anyone he's ever seen in his life.
"What are you two jabbering on about this damn early?" he asks.
He'd expected the two of you to act coy, maybe a clever 'wouldn't you like to know' retort back from the Mystic. Instead, Strange's face is entirely inscrutable, tone serious as he responds.
"We were just catching up. Nothing important. I need to head back," Strange says, then he turns to you with a meaningful tilt to his head. "Think about what I said."
"What was that about?" Miguel asks you as he watches Strange step through a portal and disappear.
You don't say anything. There's a worried frown etched between your eyebrows as you bite down on your lip.
Something crawls under Miguel's skin at the whole interaction.
You're oddly quiet the whole afternoon. Deep in thought and walking around as if in a daze, which unsettles him.
It's not difficult for him to guess what's wrong. He might have been half asleep when you and Strange were whispering in the corridors, but Miguel can put one and one together. Having two PHDs and a lifetime's experience of working in theoretical physics gives you that leg up.
In a last ditch effort to get you out of the uncharacteristic blues, he orders a dozen of your favorite cupcakes from that tiny shop in New Jersey. It costs an arm and a leg to have it couriered, but it'll be worth it if it makes you smile.
Then he sits down next to you on the bed and places the pink pastry box down on the mattress. It's your favorite place to eat cakes and it’s why you two always end up with crumbs and frosting all over the sheets.
You happily cram half a cupcake into your mouth in one bite as you eat, and he watches you contently. If there was any fairness in the world, this quiet idyllic moment could last forever. In a good world, Miguel wouldn’t have to burst this perfect bubble.
Sadly, this world is neither fair nor good sometimes.
"Strange said something to you right?" Miguel asks.
You still next to him, clearly torn between whether or not to share what was said to you, probably in secret with the very intention of being kept away from him.
“Nena,” Miguel tries again, and you close your eyes taking a deep breath, caving into his prodding.
"Strange thinks that my incidents might be correlated with the strange natural occurrences lately."
That fucking asshole. He knew it. Irritation pings across his jaw, and Miguel bites it down. He tries to reel it, forcing back the rant that wants to surface. Instead he tries to focus on you instead of his own anger.
"We don't know that. It could just be a series of coincidences," Miguel tells you.
You nod, but Miguel's not an idiot and neither are you. He can see the worry creasing your eyes as you look down to your lap.
Putting down the cupcake, he reaches over and links his right hand with yours.
"Nena, don't worry.” He cups his free hand over your cheek to drag you up to meet his eyes.
“I'll fight the whole universe to keep you safe if I have to. Nothing's ever going to harm you so long as I'm here. I'm not gonna let anything happen to you. You're the most important thing to me."
You smile at him at the words, but there's a wistfulness to it that embeds a dull ache in his chest that he wants to physically rub away to make it stop.
You lean into his touch, until your forehead presses up against his and the physical touch blunts the ache in him for a moment, putting it on pause.
"You’re the most important to me too," you say.
The sky itself cracks open not long after.
It doesn’t take the combined forces and intellect of the entire world too long to hone in on you being the root cause. Soon enough every superhero, mutant, villain and alien starts coming after you. Because hero or villain alike, no one truly wants their world to end, not if it’s not on their terms.
Mysterio tries to kidnap you by the elevator in your apartment building. The Human Torch even tries to burn the whole building down. The Punisher tries to murder you point blank outside your office.
Miguel can’t remember the last time he slept. He’s running on fumes. Day after day, he feels like he’s getting by on borrowed time.
The friends and allies you have thin out fast as the threats to the world increase in severity. Miguel never imagined having Deadpool standing outside his door stating that the life of one single person cannot outweigh the universe itself.
It’s all so stupid. None of them know what they’re talking about. A lynching mob with their torches and pitchforks. Never stopping to think whether harming you could trigger something much worse.
If Strange is right and you are the knot at the center of the fabric of reality that is coming apart, then ripping that out leaves a hole. Miguel gave up on explaining that fairly quickly because he realized that theoretical consequences doesn’t matter to an angry mob scared of facing the reality of extinction.
It all becomes a blur.
Exhaustion eats into his bones, until he can no longer tell the days apart. No matter how many times he saves you, disaster is always waiting just around the corner.
And now he’s chasing down the Green Goblin to the top of the Chrysler building from the 61st floor, where the green freak has cornered you to the edge of the rooftop.
Miguel is already out of breath, running away from the coalition of superheroes and villains that are hot on his heels, trying to stop him from saving you.
Adrenaline beats fast in his veins as he keeps running. Miguel is only able to make out those in pursuit in brief glimpses. The bright blue spandex suit of Reed Richards as his freakishly long elastic limbs stretch towards him. The blocks of metal hurtling towards Miguel, missing by inches and crashes into the side of a building as Magneto’s form hovers nearby.
He ignores them all, not sparing a glance behind him. He just has to keep moving. It doesn't matter that his muscles scream and burn in exhaustion. Doesn't matter that his head dulls with a heavy ache from lack of sleep. He has to keep going for you. Has to save you.
He's so close, he's almost there.
From the corner of his eyes, he makes out the familiar garish red flowing cape fluttering against the blue sky.
Strange.
Miguel marginally relaxes, at the sight of the sole ally he has left in this universe. He leaps across the rooftop, into the temporary safety of the observatory deck.
His feet doesn't even reach the ground. Something restrains him from behind. Bright lights materialize out of thin air. It wraps around Miguel's limb with the strength of unbreakable manacles, hugging him so tight it restricts the flow of blood to his fingers. Then he’s brought down to his knees.
Miguel whips his head back and Strange stands there, hands formed in a holding gesture.
“What are you–”
"I'm sorry," Strange says.
Miguel snarls at his restraints, wrenching and twisting in every direction he is able to even with the limited range of motion, but it's to no avail. The harder he struggles the more forceful the restraints seem to close in on him, mirroring his strength.
"I'm sorry it had to come to this. I really hoped there was another way but every life in the whole of the universe is at stake, Miguel."
Hot burning anger spears through him, and if he could he would raze it all to the ground with it. This place, this world and this fucking traitor standing there can all fucking burn. Miguel is gonna kill him. He's gonna kill this fucking bastard. He can't believe he trusted him.
“Strange, fucking let me… Stephen!”
He hears your pained shout and snaps his head towards the sound.
Miguel is only ten feet away from you. Ten measly feet from where the Green Goblin is holding you by the ledge of the rooftop. He can still reach you, if he can get free he can still save you.
Tearing through the magical binds, there’s a bone-cracking sound in his shoulder. Searing pain spreads through his arm. For all his struggles, he doesn't know if he’s even an inch closer towards you.
He watches you drop from the ledge.
It's a pin drop moment where everything stops. His heart is no longer beating.
No. This can't be how it ends.
He's moving forward, even as the sharp restraints digs into his limbs and flesh and burrows in with an excruciating ache. But the pain doesn't matter. All that matters is you.
It claws into him, and digs and tears, until he is sure that his entire limbs are going to be torn off, but he doesn't stop, keeps pulling against the resisting strength that surrounds him, rips against the hindrance embracing every ounce of the pain until finally, the pressure gives.
There's a cacophony of sound that's left behind him as he leaps through the air. He slingshots downwards, cutting through air as he tries to reach you.
Miguel catches your hand and relief fills his chest.
"I got you. I got you," he murmurs. He's not sure if those words are to calm you or himself.
Pulling you up in defiance of the pull of gravity, he tries to haul you up towards him. Your hand squirms in his, and if you keep going you're going to slip out of his grasp.
"Nena, don't move," he shouts in alarm, but you don't stop, twisting in all directions, making it harder for him to get a better grip.
What're you– You're resisting against his strength, why would you...
It hits him with a sickening realization.
You don' want him to save you.
"Stop!" he shouts. “Stop!”
You shake your head, tears filling the corner of your eyes that flow upwards and everything is upside down to him.
"We’re out of time. You have to let me go,” you say.
His fingers squeeze down even harder at your words, refusing to hear it.
“There's still time. There are still other options. I can still save you!”
Your hand reaches for the amulet pressed against your collarbone. Dread floods every nerve in his body as he sees your fingers squeeze around it.
"No!" He shouts. Screams it so loud it burns in his lungs. But deep down he knows it's not going to make any difference. "Nena, don't!"
The wind whips too loudly against his face. The sound of your heart pounding so painfully hard in his ear that it's deafening and he knows that sound will haunt him forever.
You're scared.
He sees your lips move, but he can't hear what you're saying.
But he's heard these words so many times before from your lips that he knows them by heart.
''I love you.''
An invisible force blasts away at him, it shatters through him through his limbs and torso into the very soft tissue of his stomach and makes his teeth shake. He's propelled upwards, unable to control his movements or defy the gravity that he's learned to navigate after all these years mid-air.
He holds on as hard as he can to your hand, but it doesn't matter. His fingers slip, his grip is lost.
You're falling through the sky.
Miguel doesn't remember much after that.
Somehow he makes it back onto the ground.
Somehow he finds you amongst the cracked dirty concrete.
Somehow, despite falling from over a 100 feet your body is still intact where it lies lifeless on the ground.
Your bones are broken though. Body limp and soft in his arms in a way that has never felt more wrong to him. His only consolation is that you're still warm in his arms, and he thinks that maybe if he just doesn't let go, if he holds you tightly pressed to him the way he is doing now, it'll remain that way forever.
The sky has cleared above. There are no cracks in the azure blue canvas.
This world is saved.
His world has ended.
Dedication & Credits: To @thirstworldproblemss who has been with me on this journey since chapter one without her enthusiasm and her companionship and friendship and listening to my wild ramblings about this story, I would never have set out to write this thing. She gave me so much joy in the process, she also gave me her time and her skills and brainy talent to help me process and brainstorm this into a shape that I was excited to share with you all! You also have her to thank for that devastating last line.

You have me confused with someone else."

you were always distracted with something on your phone or walking through the hallway with a big pair of headphones on your head drowning out every outside sound. always in your own little world.
you’d skip into miguel’s office with a stack of plates in your hand saying he needed to eat something. taking notice of when he liked something in particular and bringing more of that.
sometimes you would bring him things that you made yourself and little encouraging notes on top.
he never told you to stop so you just kept coming.
when he found himself taking a liking to you, he had tried to figure out ways to let you down easily, believing you were too happy and he would bring you down. but every time he watched you come in with something new, sometimes ranting about the latest thing you were interested in.
“did you know that the two loudest animals in the world are the sperm whale and the blue whale?”
one week it was the ocean, another it was ww2. whatever it was, he was listening, it being the only opportunity he had outside of missions to hear your voice.
it got to the point where he hadn’t been able to hide it anymore. everyone knew how much he cared for you. checking on you after missions, letting out a small smile when he saw you doodling during meetings. or the way his tone unintentionally softened when he talked to you.
one day he asked you why you always did the things you did for him. you said. “Do you not like it?” he hated the fact that he may have made you disappointed for even one second.
No!” he cleared his throat, trying to recover from the embarrassment. “No, that wasn’t what I meant. I meant, why do you go through all this just to..help me?”
“I believe everyone deserves for someone to care for them. I care about you.” he could’ve melted right there. he had tried to hide the way his eyes softened and the tenseness in his shoulders went away completely.
you turned around to leave but he grabbed your arm. “stay.” his eyes seemed like he was pleading. “ok.” you said softly, smiling.
