Of course grimdark has point =)  Your life is shit. Nothing you do helps, you are as awesome as you can imagine, you have done everything and more - and things still go wrong. You manage to hang on barely, nothing offers happiness or even comfort.  Why, you ask. How, you ask. Is life not meant to be happy? Why cant I be happy?! NO, says grimdark. No, come on! Life is meaningless, shit happens all the time with all the people. There is no right way to live. Shit happens with everyone. Don´t get your hopes up, amazing as you are - it will not help. Shit will happen anyway. And THAT is comforting. Not the feeling that you are meant to have young love and if it never comes, you are treated especially bad. Not the feelig that you are meant to be happy and if you cannot, you have failed.  No, life IS shit, it says. It`s normal not to be loved, it`s normal not to find, what you seek for. The life you live is normal. You are normal. It`s ok.

Btw, I see no point in horror movies. Like no point at all. 

I think a surprising amount of writers don’t realize that tragedies are supposed to be cathartic. They’re intended to result in a purging of emotion, a luxurious cry; the sorrow caused by a great tragedy is akin to fear caused by a good horror movie – it’s a “safe” sorrow, one that is actually satisfying to the audience. It can still be beautiful! It’s isn’t supposed to just be salting the earth so nothing can grow.

But that’s how you get grimdark: writers who don’t realize that they’re supposed to be doing something with the audience instead of to the audience.
