Death Note 'Dan and Phil'! AU where L and Light are a beloved youtube duo whose fans are convinced the two are dating. And they might actually be, at least for the camera, but they are still rivals trying to get the other behind bars/six feet under. In fact, if you watch their newest baking video closely, you can see L's hidden security cameras by the cutlery drawer as well as Light putting arsenic in L's tea.

I’ve just gotten back into Death Note and my brain has been rotting on these two ships a lot lately, and it’s good to see other people are here too. It helps that your post OP helped sort of put into words what I’ve been thinking lately.
I’ve felt that another key difference that sort of underpins this (aka the reason I think the mistrust/trust dynamic you describe exists) is that the thing that ultimately drives Hannigram and Lawlight together are different. Both ships deal with loneliness and stagnation, but I think Hannigram is primarily concerned with loneliness and Lawlight is primarily concerned with stagnation.
Will and Hannibal are lonely first and foremost and, while they are stagnant, they are sort of content with that. Hannibal will always find a temporary amusement, that is a huge reason he pulls some of the shit he does. For Will that stagnation is emotionally safe (change means loss of control of stimuli) but they want understanding and acceptance (the instinctual craving as described by OP). It is a happy circumstance that means the person that understands and accepts them also challenges them intellectually and breaks the monotony.
On the other hand, L and Light are stagnant and it’s draining them. L has case after case and eventually they start looking the same so the temporary fix is starting to not cut it (I do also believe that he seeks justice too, multiple states can be true if Will had taught us anything). Light states at the beginning that he is bored and that is one of his primary motivations for becoming Kira. They challenge each other, stimulate each other intellectually in a dangerous competition that thrills them. After L dies, Light’s motivation dies with him. The fact that they also understand each other better than anyone, while important, is secondary because they both revel in their loneliness before they realize how wonderful acceptance is.
Sorry to keep comparing Hannigram and LawLight but it's hard to be super into two fandoms that are so different yet so similar and whose similarities and differences help me to understand the individual works better but anyway--
I think a prime difference in the two is that it is integral to LawLight that neither of them believe each other when they say anything. It's about the annoyance of knowing that bitch is *trying* to fuck with you as if he can (despite the fact he's also aware he can't and so therefore is just trying to annoy you and taunt you) but not being able to say anything about it. Whereas with Hannigram, they do believe each other, occasionally. Even when there has to be an overarching presence if of mistrust in order to save themselves, they can't *help* it. They trust each other emotionally even if they don't logically, because they are the only two people bonded in the specific way they are.
They trust each other in the small pockets of time and space where they can because they crave it, because it's instinctual.
