Katelyn was nervous. It was the first day of her second semester at Palmetto State, and her first day taking Anatomy and Physiology II. For her first semester she'd been lucky to have a few friends to share the class with, but their schedules couldn't line up this semester, so she was taking it alone. She was hoping she'd be able to make some new friends.

But she was also running a little late. She had to get across the whole campus in about fifteen minutes, and she was cutting it much closer than she'd like to. When she walked into the huge lecture hall, she saw the place was nearly filled already, and the only empty seats left were towards the front of the room.

Slowly, Katelyn walked down the steps, looking for a row that wasn't crowded. She eventually found one that only had one person, and when she looked closer, she was pretty sure it was one of the Foxes. She'd seen them because she was a cheerleader, but had been warned by the upperclassmen to keep her distance, so she had. But this was the only familiar face she could see, so hopefully it wouldn't be a bad choice to sit down next to him.

She could tell it was one of the blond twins - the Minyards, she was pretty sure, but she couldn't tell which one at first. Katelyn knew it had to be weird that she had stopped in the middle of the row to get a look at someone too busy organizing his notes to notice her, but she had to be sure she knew which one this was. One of them was a goalie, wore the black armbands and had the manic smile, and the other a backliner, always broody and in the background. She couldn't see if this one wore armbands due to the thick hoodie he had on, but she couldn't see that smile, so...

She took a chance, taking a step towards the open seat next to him. "Is this taken?" she asked.

The blond looked up, eyebrows shooting up in surprise. Katelyn had never noticed before, but she'd never gotten a good look at the face of either twin, which was really a shame because he had a really pretty face. The first thing Katelyn noticed where his eyes: they were hazel, but there was a shade of gold in them that brought them out more, capturing her attention. She was sure she'd never seen eyes like those before.

"Uh, no," he said, clearing his throat and averting his eyes.

Katelyn slowly sat down, managing to take her eyes away from the guy's face and slightly mourning the loss of his eyes on her. She placed her backpack at her feet and reached for her notebook, shoving away any nerves she had. "I'm Katelyn," she said, holding out one hand when she finished. "You're on the exy team, right? I'm one of the cheerleaders, I've seen you play."

"Yeah," he said slowly. "Aaron. Minyard."

"Nice to meet you," Katelyn said. Aaron reached out and took her hand to shake it. She knew he was short, because she'd seen him on the court, but that didn't mean he was small. Aaron's hands were large, as well as his arms: the muscles in his biceps were clearly defined, even through the thick hoodie. His shoulders were broad, as well as his chest, and...

Katelyn decided oogling her possible class partner wasn't the best first impression. Even though he was hot.

"I try to find someone to study with in new classes," she slowly explained. "Do you have someone to study with?"

"No," Aaron said.

"Want to study with me?"

He seemed to have a permanently shocked look on his face, hazel eyes wide while he stared at Katelyn. She did her best to not be consumed by them. "Sure," he ended up saying.

They traded phone numbers and remained silent through the first lecture, only talking when the professor prompted a quick discussion. When class was finally over, Katelyn packed up her stuff and walked next to Aaron towards the doors, deciding to ask what he was studying. Aaron launched into talking about his dream to be a doctor, and while Katelyn paid close attention, her eyes wandered to admire the rest of his body. She wondered if he had defined abs hidden under his hoodie, and how he managed to wear skinny jeans when his legs looked like...well, like that. Aaron had strong thighs and calves, built due to him being an athlete, and it was so weird to be admiring legs, but here she was. He was just a few inches shorter than her, allowing Katelyn to look all she wanted without him noticing. It also helped that he kept staring ahead instead of making eye contact.

In conclusion, Aaron was very attractive.

"Call me when you want to study," Katelyn said, waving when they finally had to part. "I'll see you at your next game!"

The moment she got back to her dorm room, Katelyn decided to text her friends.

2. Favorite canon thing about this character? My fav canon moment with Katelyn is when the monsters get back from Columbia and she’s just there waiting for Aaron. Also just how clear her love and care for Aaron is actually warms my heart and makes me wanna sob and I adore that she started bringing the Foxes and Vixens together (I love kevaaron but I actually am obsessed with Katelyn personality I was just unfortunately sucked down the kevaaron rabbit hole and I cannot get out)

3. Least favorite canon thing about this character? The fact that he’s canonically a little homophobic. but it also opens up a whole can of worms in my brain about his childhood and his own internal struggles that I could actually talk about for eternity

And Kevin goes to one of her competitions and he is actually drooling over her athleticism and skill and as soon as he sees her he profusely apologizes and now argues against anyone who says it isn’t a sport

okay wait fuck that i'm not done yet.

katelyn mackenzie put up with so fucking much. i mean she started college, met a guy she liked in her classes, and spent probably an inordinate amount of time building up to the point where he'd willing say full sentences to her, but he's still detached and distant when they're anywhere more public, outside of the library or classes. usually a red flag, but something made her decide that he was worth it anyway. she watches him on the court, smiles even when he looks away from her after they hold each other's gazes for a fraction of a second, and just hangs onto what he sounds like when they study together, what his smile looks like. hangs on to the parts of him she knows are real, even if nobody else gets to see them. then when she finally starts dating aaron, he explains. in no uncertain terms, she will get hurt if people know about them. he says it openly and he tells her she can leave. maybe she should. maybe she should just leave all of this, get out when she's got a chance, but what then? ignore him on the court? look away when she passes him on the way out of a lecture? is she supposed to pretend they never happened, that they were never real, even if it might be for the best?

she says yes, anyway. and then for two years– two years– she loves him quietly, nothing but study sessions and rare empty dorm rooms, half-smiles and almost-waves, and she holds onto the fragments of himself that he shares, slowly building him up, piece by piece, until the half of aaron minyard that she can hold in her hands in the dark, is almost completely different from the half the rest of the world knows. aaron takes her to the banquet, and she wonders if he's starting to come out of his shell, starting to solidify her as part of his life. he texts her when he and his family head to columbia for thanksgiving. she says miss you <3. then she's his phone call from the holding cell when his voice shakes and she asks if he's okay and he says 'andrew's hurt.' then there's nothing she can do but wait. aaron comes back, and he collapses into her arms. she holds him all night. he tells her she doesn't deserve this. she holds him tighter.

they spend that winter closer than they've ever been, aaron sleeping beside her more often than not, falling asleep with her hands in his hair, his arms around her waist. they get dinner together. the foxes are polite during what little time she spends with them, and she often wonders if she's out of place, but aaron's hand squeezes hers under the table and it's worth it. she goes home for christmas, calls him every other day, texts him on new year's, and misses him like a lung. it isn't until she gets back that she realises it can't stay like this– andrew's home again, and it's back to secrets and shared nights cut short and aaron's lying about his nightmares getting better and she's tired of hiding and pretending that they're nothing, so she tentatively takes the first chance she gets and when she needs to, she stands her ground.

she stops being collateral damage. she wants aaron, more than anything, but she won't act like this doesn't hurt. cutting him off aches like the worst kind of pain, and for a terrifying week she wonders if she meant enough to aaron for him to stand up to his brother the way she's asking him to. she folds her arms and grits her teeth and refuses to back away. she forces herself not to meet aaron's eyes when he looks for her at games, and it isn't until he knocks at her door and says he loves her that she realises that this was always going to hurt one way or another, but that didn't make it any less worth it.

and on top of THAT?? she's a fucking medical student! this woman has a will of steel

y'all read all three aftg books and still said Kateaaron wouldn't make it past college. THAT is fucking crazy

I multi ship and im not against Kevaaron in the slightest but there's just something about Kateaaron that makes me tear up a little bit inside because its just the purest love like,,, here's a deeply damaged and hurting boy who's never experienced true, proper love...then along comes this girl and he just falls. Immediately. and...and she loves him too? she wants to be with him? she smiles at him softly and sees him for all that he is and everything he hides and she loves him? and wants to be around him? and he wants to be around her because she makes him...happy? can he be happy? is he allowed?...she calms him. he's angry and jagged and hurt and she calms him. she's the return of the suns warmth when it peaks out from around a cloud, she's everything good that he never thought he'd have and she loves him and she'll wait for him and he just falls. flat on his face because there's nothing else he can do. he's wanted and he wants to be wanted and there she is. how is he supposed to say no? she shows him warmth and love and care and he latches on. and they love each other. so much. man.
