Honestly he was a decent blood mage though, wasn’t he? He DID successfully get away from the Templars in the circle, and if you go with his sacrificial ritual idea to save Connor, it goes off without a hitch. He may have been a blithering idiot in respect to many life decisions and not a great regular mage at first, but the dude DID practice his blood magic and was competent in at least that much.
