J'onn J'onzz / Detriot Police Detective John Jones / Martian Manhunter - MARS THEME

"We can look like them, we blend in, a lot of aliens can't. And people in this world don't have much tolerance for others two look different.

I say that as an alien and add someone who's worn the face of a black man for 15 years."

all I want is for J'onn to go back to Denver and investigate Normal Crimes there because one of the spunky young leaguers broke their leg and needs a Responsible Dad to look after them and no one trusts them to not go feral on the Watchtower. they are on crutches and occasionally hit people over the head with them.

rarely any mentions to their alter egos are given except their friends' civilian personas (who called? Bruce. can we not call him back? we both know that's not an option. it's an option. it's not a good idea)

everyone: woah Detective Jones how'd you open that door!?! Young Leaguer: oh did you not know he can pick locks J'onn, sticking a bobby pin in another locked keyhole: yeah see look Young Leaguer: any time now.... J'onn, flourishing his bobby pin: ta da! *unlocks it from the other size using telekinesis* Young Leaguer, under their breath: cheater

surprisingly I actually had this idea before I broke my foot it's just now I can't contain it because NOW I HAVE MATERIAL

What your favorite man hunter character design

Oh no I'm going to talk a lot, lol. Okay so! I've got a couple of favorites because they're a combination of things I like. This is all completely subjective preferences, so here's my itemized list of things I personally want to see in a Martian Manhunter design:

No ears: I'm so picky about this. When J'onn has ears he looks too much like a human in green paint, and when he has pointy elf ears he looks too fantasy instead of sci fi. I'm a fan of his more alien looking forms where he has a crest and no ears.

Not too buff!!: It's easy for J'onn to be mistaken for the Hulk, so along with no ears, I like him being less beefy. I also don't see J'onn as a brute muscle character.

Sci-fi leaning outfit: What makes J'onn stand out from Clark is that of the two, J'onn is the more "alien" character, so his outfit should reflect that! The more sci-fi-high-end-weird-fashion for him, the better.

Red eyes: or shadowy orange like the DCAU design, I like that too. Bonus: no pupils in martian form.

Main color green, primary colors as accents: I don't like the newer designs that introduce deep purples with overwhelming red pop accents. It reads like villain colors to me and doesn't look as nice!

Needs to be in some way scantily clad: This is so important, he's Not Like Other Men please I don't have to explain this one

Big brows: defining trait.

My top 4 fav Martian Manhunter designs (in no order):

What Your Favorite Man Hunter Character Design
What Your Favorite Man Hunter Character Design

DCAU and Man of Tomorrow These designs have a great balance of blue with red and yellow accents. The DCAU's alien + Frankenstein's monster face has a restrained expressive quality that's easy to get attached to. Meanwhile Tomorrow's design leaned away from the mystic and more into sci-fi (which I prefer). The design finds an elegant solution to J'onn's boots and pants while spreading the red accent, which is clever. My only nitpick for Tomorrow's design is for the red crisscrosses to be simplified (just a little) for drawing efficiency.

What Your Favorite Man Hunter Character Design

Love that both these designs don't have ears, but I especially love how Tomorrow's design has a crest. Very alien <3 good amount of scantily clad.

(design and art by Kris Kelly)

Supergirl tv show

My favorite live action J'onn so far! I make more exceptions to my itemized preferences when things get adapted to live action since it can translate awkwardly to take what works for animation/comics literally. He looks fantastically sci-fi with the armor plating, and I like that they still pay homage to where the red and yellow is placed + blue cape.

What Your Favorite Man Hunter Character Design

this design technically has ears BUT it's so hidden and well shaped into the crest that I count it as a design with no ears. Love that it also resembles David Harewood, while still being distinct. I prefer this design over the Snyder one's distracting face markings (and ears...). I do wish the Supergirl tv show design could at least have him be sleeveless, though.

What Your Favorite Man Hunter Character Design

J'onn's Manhunter outfit in MM Identity (2019) by Riley Rossmo (cover drawn by Joshua Middleton)

By the end of this comic J'onn transforms into essentially his classic DCAU design which is great, but what I really want to geek over is Rossmo's take on the Manhunter uniform on Mars!! Because artistically he understood the assignment. Despite giving him longer sleeves, the design is still iconic-ly scantily clad by giving us booty shorts. We get to see his legs. His thighs. It's been so long. It's been years. The design is sleek, even without a cape it's still so distinctly Martian Manhunter. Great distribution of color. No ears. Big brows and alien eyes. My only nitpick is I wish his face was more appealing in the comic.

tldr; no ears more thighs

this is so well written!

short addition- J'onn as Hank Henshaw in Supergirl says something akin to "I shapeshifted into this form out of circumstance and luck, and to change out of hatred other people have just because of my skin color would be to abandon those who are subject to it every day."

I'd pay so much money for a special issue of Clark and J'onn (who have very similar powersets) juxtaposed in how they're treated. oh man I want to write something on the differences in the public's reactions to their heroics SO BAD now

Rethinking Race
nightlyrants.substack.com
Or: why does this shapeshifting alien look like my uncle????

essay I did focusing mainly on Martian Manhunter that examines how race can become a choice when we're discussing shapeshifting aliens, and what that even means if these alien characters identify with the race they're taking on anyway

Justice League Infinity #3 - Cover Art By Dan Mora

Justice League Infinity #3 - Cover art by Dan Mora

I'M GOING TO LOSE MY SHIT IS THAT CALVIN ELLIS MY FAVORITE ALT SUPERMAN EVER

If you didn't know, he's the leader of the multiverse JL, which is comprised of the most powerful iterations of leaguers throughout the DC multiverse.

He's a your normal kryptonian named Kal El who crash landed on Earth as a baby who styles his fighting based on the boxing training he had as a kid, became the president of the US, and runs his own JL, the multiverse JL, and makes time to be the president-

I just can't with him he's so ridiculously op in time management of all things

fun fact! inspiration for his design came from Barack Obama and Muhammad Ali, the creators from him are Grant Morrison and Doug Mahnk

yoooo found this in my drafts I completely forgot to post it like years ago whoops

J'onn's head shape changes throughout the historical group photos of the jl in the background of several panels during final crisis: requiem- he trusts this team, he loves this planet, and slowly takes on a more martian form. his subconscious comfort around them physically manifests as his body allowing itself to take a martian shape (all IDs in alt text)

SPOILERS FOR FINAL CRISIS: REQUIEM

J'onn's Head Shape Changes Throughout The Historical Group Photos Of The Jl In The Background Of Several

he was like a grandfather or a father to some of them, a mentor to many, and a friend to all. the fact that Nightwing finds him dead is so powerful because, in this continuity, Dick has known J'onn since his time as Robin. Dick is frequently at the beginning of modern heroes (Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman) in DC, so him being the one who finds J'onn feels very full-circle

ID inside of the JLA headquarters, Cynthia Reynolds and Ice are mourning J'onn in front of the group photos wall. Cynthia says "He was like a father to me. Always there to listen... in good times and bad. Told me the truth even when I didn't want to hear it. And he never let me beat him at chess. I always had to earn it. When I did win he'd share his cookies with me." Ice says "Yeah. J'onn's weakness wasn't fire, it was chocos. It's time, Cynthia. The GLs are here to transport us to Mars." END ID

the usage of "Martian Manhunter" vs "J'onn" is of note as well. when the Secret Society is fighting him, they only refer to him as Martian Manhunter, while every single hero calls him J'onn

the day after J'onn died, a telepathic link is activated in the minds of Bruce Wayne, Clark Kent, Hal Jordan, Cynthia Reynolds, and Dinah Lance that causes them to record and recite J'onn's history of Mars. not only did he trust them to accept his martian form, he entrusted them with his account of his almost dead civilization. and they not only keep that promise by combining their part of the account into a book, but they also bury him on Mars so he could be reunited with his home at last

Superman being the orator at the funeral becomes even more fitting when J'onn recounts meeting a young Clark Kent in Smallville. they share not only a history, but a burden: as some of the last members of their civilizations, aliens on Earth, and heroes, J'onn frequently lent an ear to Clark's troubles

ID a comic panel set on a sunny day at a farm in Kansas. J'onn narrates his time there, "One identity I undertook was that of Josh Johnstone, an African-American migrant worker... I worked in the fields alongside Jonathan Kent and his young son, Clark, under the hot Kansas sun one summer." Josh is carrying a bolt of black fabric and smilinh down at a young Clark, who seems to be excitedly talking to Josh. Jonathan follows them from behind and looks on amusedly. END ID

Batman is not known for his displays of affection, but the end of the comic makes clear that Bruce will miss him. with his cowl off, he leaves a single choco (the DC's version of oreos) on J'onn's casket and calls him an old friend before leaving back to Earth

ID alone in the room with J'onn's casket, Batman's black glove places a choco cookie on the glass of J'onn's casket. before he puts his cowl back on, Bruce says "Goodbye, old friend." then walks away END ID

J'onn's steady presence in the league is so important to their ability to come together, not just as an organization, but as a community. it is not the same without him

specifically it's called Martian Manhunter #1000000! if y'all can't find it lmk- I have a copy

also the way they show Future J'onn in that one is vaguely reminiscent of y'all's white martians

I'm not a Raynerd but one of the reasons that Kyle is considered an amazing GL is because he's an artist. John and Hal are ex-military and a pilot, respectively- their ways of solving issues are more limited to their training. meanwhile Kyle's ability to think creatively and make constructs that are more inspired by what could be than what already is

also there's a plot point where he becomes a white lantern? comic book artists made a comic book artist one of the most powerful people which I think is neat :)

do you guys have any opinions on Kyle Rayner? in DC 1 Million, his and J'onn's friendship is a major part in securing a happier future

I really want to know more about Kyle Rayner!! I grew up with John Stewart as my GL and later on loved Hal Jordan in GLTAS, but!! Kyle Rayner is a comic artist!! That me!! I'd love to draw comic-artist-specific jokes with him. I don't know how much the comics take advantage of that part of his identity (I'm sure they do to an extent) but I'd love it if he just talks comics jargon every now and then. Has comic specific stresses and fears. I would have a field day if I just knew more!

I've seen the panels where he talks to J'onn and it's cute hehe. Thanks for the rec, I will check that out!

can't get the idea out of my head of M'gann being given houseplants when she first arrives on Earth and cultivates them in her room by herself. cut to months later after she has a community she realizes almost all of them have outgrown their pots and need to be planted outside and she does so in the community garden. one plant stays in her room and it's a martian seedling that has now blossomed after months of dormancy

Can't Get The Idea Out Of My Head Of M'gann Being Given Houseplants When She First Arrives On Earth And

YEAA that's really close to how I imagine M'gann settles in Denver! After J'onn and Ma'al leave the Erdels (who live in a cottage in the woods) for the town, they stay in a crummy 2 bedroom apartment (eventually adopting Double Stuff). But when M'gann and K'hym move in, J'onn gives M'gann his room with a baby bed installed there for K'hym (J'onn volunteers to sleep on the couch). They get a bunch of plant pots for M'gann to use her White Martian sleeping powers to grow Martian plants that are harvested to feed a growing baby K'hym.

I love the idea of M'gann choosing to expand her plants into a community garden hobby! I imagine J'onn and Ma'al later save up to move into a bigger apartment so K'hym and J'onn can have their own rooms. There M'gann could have a public community garden for Earth plants, and a secret alien community garden where the local stealth aliens come to plant foreign plants safely under M'gann's care.

the movement on these J'onns is sick. if J'onn had to take up John Stewart's ring during JL/JLU for some reason this is exactly what he would've looked like, I'm sure

looks like something @jesncin would like too

Do you think Mon-El's relationship with the other Superfriends and family was overlooked a lot? Because I do.

I mean just think about it. In season 2, the relationships that he built with the others; not just Kara, were very important to him too. J'onn, Alex, Winn, maybe even Maggie. He was happy in mid-season 2, with seemingly no problems adjusting to Earth life, almost like he preferred it.

Which, honestly he probably did. Along with Kara, the others also made Mon-El into the responsible future leader he becomes.

Because he wasn't just close with Kara. He was close with Alex too. And J'onn. And I can bet that he admired Eliza more than he could ever his own mother. They were family to him in the shortest amount of time he spent there. Alex was there in the DEO reprimanding him and Winn almost every day, either with the tests they kept doing against orders or with them messing around on the job, like she was his elder sister too. J'onn, we all know was a father figure to him. The vulnerability he showed to him, he's probably never even shown to Kara. And J'onn was there for him too, always, with guidance. That's saying more than literally anyone on Daxam was to him. I think in all the hate that went against Mon-El simply for the fact that he was with Kara, it was overlooked how Mon-El as an individual character was with the other characters and how he quickly made at home on Earth, despite Kara. (They could've done a lot with that.)

Then Rhea came, and surprise surprise, there wasn't even the slightest look of relief or happiness that they were alive. After being surrounded by so much love, for even the shortest amount of time, he obviously couldn't go back to his lonely, ignorant lifestyle.

Yet that's exactly what happened. In a different way though, so it's all okay. It's not the same thing. He's in the future, with strangers all around him. And he spent years trying to go back. Before he gave up and decided to be what they would've want him to be; what they were hoping he would be alongside them- a leader; a hero. However, without them, you can't tell me that in being so, he lost himself too for the sake of duty.

He wasn't happy in the future. He became a lonely, melancholic man, who probably worked himself to the bone with no time to spare for his own. He even married for work. Though I do believe that once Winn went back with him, it must've added life to him. Give him some heart back, to have someone with him from then. That's how much that time meant to him. Then came Ayla and Mary by extension and he finally had something important to him in that time that he could look forward to; that he could be happy with, no matter how small it was.

His whole family was back there though. For Winn, he would only miss his friends, albeit painfully. But he already had an established life that he had made peace with once his parents died. So it was like moving away for a new job. But to Mon-El, these people broke him down and built him from the ground up. They showed him how life truly should be and not how he was taught on Daxam. They opened his eyes from the manipulation he was put through his parents and helped him be his own man; made him into a leader. That wasn't just Kara. That was all of them- Alex, J'onn, Maggie, Winn, James, Eliza.

Which again brings me to the stupid finale. You're telling me that Alex and Mon-El are strangers and that she insists on Winn coming to the wedding but doesn't say anything to Mon-El? We might not have gotten much screentime between the two, but you don't just go on double dates and seek support from someone you don't like. Mon-El was an important part of their lives too. He impacted their lives too. Alex and J'onn at the very least, I feel.

And I know that Kara asked him but I'm just pointing out the bad writing. It didn't make sense to let him go so easily. But are we surprised? No. They never cared about Mon-El anyway so why bother.

All I'm saying is when I imagine Mon-El in the future, I see him working to the bone and never sparing a second to himself; because if he did, his mind would only go back to the one place he was ever happy; the one place he ever felt safe and loved; to his family- knowing he can't ever go back there, not truly. And that place is not Daxam.

Because if he thinks about it, he'll only be reminded of how alone he is (in more ways than one); of how in he doesn't share even share the same reality as, not only her, but them.

Because he knows better than that. He was taught better than that; shown better than that. He leads by example. By the example of the people he looked up to and he loved. So no matter what the cost he would also do what is only right. (Like someone else we know.)

hello dp x dc fandom i have. a concept for u

so one of those 'Phantom meets the Justice League' fics (maybe with Ghost King!Danny?) and Danny's trying so hard to be as Mature and Adult as possible so they take him seriously and he makes a good impression. he's practiced this with Clockwork he can Be Professional he's totally got this

most of the League is ranging from diplomatic to outright suspicious (cough cough Batman) of this powerful unknown entity who apparently comes from an entire species of extradimensional creatures they had no idea about

J'onn J'onnz, local telepath, is watching this go down knowing full well that Phantom's thoughts are swinging wildly between 'holy shit i'm in SPACE this is so cool i get to meet the JUSTICE LEAGE oh man they're so awesome' and 'ancients PLEASE think i'm a Mature and Capable Adult'.

J'onn J'onzz Arrived On Earth AI As A Bounty Hunter Searching For A Criminal From His Home, A Place We

J'onn J'onzz arrived on Earth AI as a bounty hunter searching for a criminal from his home, a place we call Titan, one of Saturn’s moons.

Methane runs like water on the frigid moon. There are methane oceans, lakes, and rivers. Methane rain and snow. J'onn's people are a technological race as yet undiscovered by mankind. Among other abilities, his people are able to shape-shift to the extent that they can change their own biology to live in what might otherwise be hostile environments.

When J’onn arrived on Earth AI he took a form much like its human inhabitants, but neglected to change the color of his skin. Decades of science fiction stories of little green men led Earth AI humans to take him to be from Mars. J’onn allowed them to keep their misconception, so he adopted the name Martian Manhunter.
